We have been customers of RCN and Astound since 2011, both in Washington, DC, and now in Boston. But we have canceled our account for internet and cable TV service because of the exorbitant price increases in recent year. After an internet search, we discovered that Xfinity provided a comparable cable package to what we had from RCN and an internet speed that was twice the speed of RCN's, at roughly half the price. We saw no reason to remain with RCN, especially since there were high prices for a technician's visit. Very disappointing. read more

I was expecting RCN to be great since my friend recommended it, but I was very disappointed with the entire experience. The technician showed up to the door on time, but the first thing he did was reminding me that he accepted tips. Then he went ahead and tried to install the internet. Not only did he fail to complete the installation, but he also was rude throughout, throwing wires here and there. In the end, he told me to ask my building to figure the wire out and he had to leave because it was a waste of his time and he was not getting paid by the hour. I ended up still tipping him 20 bucks just for his time being here, but this particular RCN employee was not only incompetent but also unprofessional. I hope this does not reflect on the company culture. Will not use again nor recommend to anyone who is considering RCN. read more

Coming from Comcrap, err, Comcast, I find myself totally shocked at how easy things have been with RCN. Everyone I have talked to on the phone has been friendly and competent. When they say they will take care of something and call you back... they actually do! All I am interested in is a internet connection so I can't comment on their cable TV or phone services, but 50 Mbps at $30 I have been completely happy. No outages or slow downs that I have noticed. read more

I am a WOW! Customer for over 5 years but when astound took over the 1st problem we had was that a garbage truck cut our power line. I called astound the 7th of July, the same day the power line was cut asking for a technician to come to look at it. They asked for the details and then said that the technician would contact us on the same day. Nobody contacted me. On July 8th, I called again and I spoke with a supervisor and said that they would definitely call me today. Nobody contacted me. On July 9th, I called again to cancel this service because astound was clearly not bothered to contact me. On July 10th, Customer service called me to see if I'm available for a technician to come and fix the problem. It's like the company didn't know I canceled the service with them. I told them that I canceled it yesterday and then she said that the technician would come to pick up the modem that we rented from them. And again, no one came to pick up the modem. I called them and asked why didn't the technician come to pick up the modem. They said that WOW! would send you a box for you to mail the modem back to them. Today, I have a bill with $157 just because I have a modem. I called them, again, they said "no mam, you have to mail it yourself." So now, do I have to pay the price because a bunch of employees don't know their job? The process? The procedure they follow? Number 1: do I have to wait for the box as one of the customer service told me? Number 2: do I have to ship it myself like the other customer service employee told me? Number 3: Or do I have to pay the bill just because I have the modem and follow their instructions waiting for the box. I never recommend astound to ANYONE even if it for FREE. This is the worst internet company I've ever been with. They are clueless about their jobs and there is a big miscommunication within their company. I was a happy WOW customer that was acquired by Astound Broadband earlier this year. After several days of an outage due to the cutover, I then had flaky service on and off for several months before even reboots of the equipment no longer helped. After several attempts with tech support they kept coming back to the fact that I needed new Astound equipment (new "codes"), and that would change my rate plan. My rate would increase by over 50%! Public service announcement: Avoid RCN at all costs. Poor quality product, poor service. I've been an RCN customer for 20 years and 10 minutes into a tech support call, the rep can't find my account. That, on top of the poor service they provide that warrants me making the call in the first place. Anyone...a talking chipmunk, is better than RCN. So I wait 10 or 15 or 20 minutes to finally get to talk to someone who can find my account, only to be told they can't help us because it isn't their problem. read more

The one positive thing about RCN is that they offer higher speeds than the other leading providers. However, their unreliable modems and connection issues overshadow the one positive aspect of their service. The speeds may be "tested" to show a high download rate, but with limit in bandwidth, these speeds never reach their potential. On top of that, internet frequently cuts off whether it be from your daily random outages or a slight gust of wind blowing on the wires outside. Their cable television selection is quite limited when compared to that of other provider's similarly tiered deals. I would give them two stars but they lied to me about the cause of my internet outages, saying my coaxial cable was not tightened enough when in fact it was so tight the maintenance worker could not tighten it any more. Then they said my own router was somehow interfering with the whole buildings internet but hijacking the connections from other routers.. sounded like a bunch of hocus pocus to me. Anyways, there is not really a provider out there that is a real contender to be the best so good luck to everyone out there. Moving to Korea may be your safest bet for a satisfactory experience when it comes to internet and cable. I would like to add that I signed up for RCN since their deals were more affordable (offered at around $50), but after taxes and fees this shot up ovee $60, which was still reasonable. However, I've noticed in my most recent statement that my price had steadily gone up to more than $70, soon closing in on $80. Yikes. Will not be using their services once I move into my new apartment. read more

Cancelled HBO as it was being provided with my phone service. They were great when I called and offered to give me a Showtime promotion which would be free for 12 months. In total, my bill should have reduced by $28 - $30. My Bill went from $302+ to $295+. Called RCN and they told me that other surcharges changed...blah, blah, blah. So I saved $7.00. What a joke! All my friends, relatives, doctors, keep communications open with me via this number!! Its been 3 weeks and a dozen call listening to their incessant apologies!!!!! RCN is THE worst all-around internet service provider. Since they figure they can't hope to be the best it's as if they're working really hard to earn the title of the worst. Here are just a few reasons why: 1) Their cable internet service cuts in and out constantly. Forget about watching anything streaming. I used to think that my wireless router was to blame until I started to connect directly to RCN's modem. It was their fault the whole time! Looked around at reviews online and found out that I'm not the only one. 2) Speeds are nowhere near the ones they advertise. You can test this yourself for free on the net. 3) Customer service is awful. With the exception of today, every RCN rep I've ever talked to is rude and incompetent. They've never helped me resolve a single problem. I've wasted as much as an hour and a half on the phone attempting to figure out why my service randomly cuts out. That time was spent waiting on hold for the rep to research a possible solution and her coming back on the line to tell me to just restart my modem one more time. Aside from rebooting my modem, the only other help she could offer was to have me make an appointment for a technician to come over. At least she warned me that I would be charged a $40 fee if the problem resolves itself by the time the technician arrives; RCN is rarely upfront about fees. Given that mine was an intermittent problem I figured that in 5 days, sure my internet might cut back in again. I didn't want to take the chance with a technician. 4) All of this had gotten me thinking that maybe this service isn't even worth the $27 a month. Sure that price can't be beat and you get what you pay for... Except that now they have the gall to raise their service fees from $27 to $40 a month. I found out when I got my bill this morning and saw that I was charged a whole lot more this month than before. The worst part is that when I called to ask them what gives, the rep told me that I had been informed of the change in last month's bill on page 4. Since I've enrolled in paperless billing, I did not receive that bill. I had to go into my account and download my last bill and search for the teeny paragraph tucked in between other paragraphs about terms of service stuff that most people, even those who get a paper bill in the mail, would overlook without fail. So shiesty. 5) Are you having trouble logging into your RCN account? Try hitting the caps lock key. That's right! Even if you had caps off when you created your password and answered your security questions, you won't be able to log in unless you enter your password in all caps... wtf? 6) Cancelled my service over the phone today. Got a very pushy rep offering to help me fix all the issues I was having if I would just give RCN another chance... Um it's too late for that. She even told me that there was nothing on my account that even said I was having a problem. No records of the hours I've wasted on the phone!?!? Seriously?!? Did I just have the wrong number??? because that would explain a lot. When I asked for a confirmation # for my cancellation, the rep told me there is no confirmation # to give. Well, great! Given how fantastic RCN's record keeping has been up to now, I have months of accidental billing for a "closed" account to look forward to. 7) And what people are saying is true about installation. They never show up within the window specified. To summarize, STAY AWAY! Update: Returned equipment on 3/2. Asked for a receipt or confirmation # from the lady who I gave my equipment to. No surprise, you don't get one, you just have to trust RCN. Got my bill today. At least they managed to pro-rate part of the service month, but they were trying to be sneaky by saying that my service ended on 3/10. I don't think so. Called and -- surprise, surprise -- no record of me turning my equipment in. The rep I talked to on the phone was very polite and helpful, RCN will mail me a check for the $15 they owe me in 8-11 weeks... I'll be checking my mailbox to make sure they do. read more

My roomate and I called RCN roughly a week in advance to set up an appointment for a new cable account - the 150 mbps speed for a new apartment in Somerville, MA. Fast forward to move in day - the technician, who we'd been told would arrive during a 10AM-12PM timeslot, had not arrived by 12:30. My roommate called up the company, and was forwarded uselessly between billing and "customer service" for about 20 minutes before being told the issue. Apparently, RCN does not service our area and no appointment had been scheduled! Such a surprise, considering we'd double checked that very thing during our initial appointment setup. Essentially, that service representative not only wasted hours of our time and inconvenienced us till we get Fios, she misrepresented RCN's service capacity and lied about setting up our visit. Any way you look at it, that's unacceptable behavior from an employee. Before you order service from this company, please keep in mind the people they pay to assist you may be lying to your face. I had crapass Comcast, and I thought RCN was some bootleg ghettoass version of Comcast. Turns out, RCN was MUCH cheaper for what I wanted.... and the customer service, though sometimes there was a wait time, were actually handled........... wait for it.............. by people in the United States who also...... wait for it.......... had a brain and weren't reading off of a script. RCN is the way to go if you want the following: - Internet that doesn't work most of the time - A router & modem you have to reset DAILY in order for any of your things to connect to wifi - A router that just decides to change the router name & passwords on its own so you can no longer log in - Customer service that will tell you if your having a problem you need to call linksys to assist because they aren't authorized (umm so why did you give me a linksys router that you can't help me with??) - Customer service that tells you they can't help you because you stupidly don't have a lap top that has a ethernet cable spot (how dare I?!) - Customer service that never calls you back after you leave a voicemail because you waited almost an hour and all of the lines were still busy If you are a young professional like me who NEEDS the internet for your job, RUN AWAY. RCN was great for the first year. After that, they started lying to me about my rates. I was being mailed promotional postcards approximately 3 times per week informing me that there was a $29.99 rate available, and asked RCN to either charge me that rate indefinitely or stop sending the postcards. RCN told me they could not stop sending the postcards, so they would continue to charge me that rate. I was happy with this. Fast forward another year, and RCN tried to raise my rate by $15/month, while not stopping sending the postcards. I repeated this conversation, and they put the rate down to about $32, and confirmed it would be that rate forever, which the extra $2 wasn't worth arguing over. After another 6 months, they raised the rate another $2. Again, this wasn't worth getting annoyed over, but I contacted them and yet again they said it wouldn't change, this was just a new service charge. A few days ago, they raised by rate by another $25. I contacted them and insisted that they charge me the $34.99 rate (now the lowest rate on the postcards I receive). The agent informed me that the $60 rate I was just charged is the lowest rate they have. I'm not interested in dealing with a company that lies to its long-term customers and won't stand by promises it makes about its prices. I'm still receiving postcards multiple times per week, and RCN has refused to stop sending them. I plan to submit a BBB and/or USPS complaint about the junk mail being sent to me which I have contacted the company and asked it be cancelled. I am cancelling my RCN service shortly, and do not plan to resume service with them. read more

Decided to make the switch to RCN from Comcast Xfinity in our new apartment. WORST IDEA EVER. OMG. You would think it would be like going to Target to avoid shopping at Walmart but instead you ended up at K-MART or even god forbid Family Dollar. Things got off to a rocky start when we purchased their $50 "signature" plan with the sports package ($10 extra /month). We were ready to rock and roll, but it turns out the "sports package" doesn't include ESPN, NESN, or CSN, meaning we don't get ANY Red Sox, Celtics, or Bruins games. How they can throw together a bundle of crap and call it a "sports package" is beyond me. There needs to be some sort of constitutional clause or amendment that prevents companies from legally doing shady shit like this. The absolute WORST part about RCN is the outdated user experience and interface. TiVo is badly in need of a major redesign. Pulling up the guide is slow, exiting out of the guide is slow, integral menu items take an unreasonable amount of clicks to get to, the "favorites" channel list is quite inaccessible and basically useless, and in the 35-40 seconds it takes to open and load the Netflix from Live TV, you will surely reminisce of the good days, the glory days, when you still had Comcast Xfinity. CONS CONTINUED: No Xfinity login so you can't use Xfinity networks across the country, No ESPN mobile (Xfinity only), no HBO Go included with the package that has the Sox/Bruins/Celtics channels, so if you want to watch sports AND HBO, it will cost you the $80 premium package PLUS the $15 HBO/Showtime add-on. TWO STARS only because the internet service has been great (probably faster than Xfinity, tested consistently @ 50-70 Mb/s; we have not had any outages yet and the rep who came to install the modem was a nice guy. We signed up for RCN when we moved to Boston on their $39.99 deal. Well what they fail to mention is that their 3 year price guarantee includes a $10/month price increase every year. So now after being a loyal customer for 3 years they pay me back by charging me $59.99 a month for basic internet. To add insult to injury, they keep sending me promotional materials advertising their $39.99/month deal and then refuse to give me that pricing when I call. Looks like it might be time to switch...too bad the options are limited. read more

If you can avoid RCN, do so. It's not worth your time to save a few dollars. We've had a lot of issues with their customer service, slow internet speed, and getting dropped service. Here is a good example: Over the weekend we got a new internet bill and without an explanation our service went up by $15. Gave them a call on Monday morning to figure out why. (Do note that I probably called at a busy time: monday and at the beginning of the month.) Nethertheless I waited about 30 mins to talk to a customer representative. After a 45 min conversation in which I explained to her that we've been paying the same rate for 3 years and that I did not understand why she was telling me that we were on a special rate for only one year-she tells me to call back on Wednesday morning so that we can officially get the old rate back. Umm..what call back on Wednesday? She also told me that our bills should have indicated that we were on a promotional rate for a year. Luckily I saved most of my bills from the last 3 years on their service. Checked the bills-nowhere does it say promotional rate! Futhermore she didn't understand and attributed it to oversight. Before I agreed to call back on Wednesday, she stated that she would make notes of our conversation so that I could bypass all the explaining and be able to get onto the new rate right away. I thought I'd be good to go on Wednesday. Just Kidding! -is what RCN is saying. Call back on Wednesday, new woman tells me I need to pay my bill to end that service before I can switch on to new plan. **Probably my mistake to go online to pay the bill instead of just paying the additonal fee of $5 to pay it over the phone with her.** But I hang up, pay my bill, and call back. A man takes this call and is UTTERLY confused at the thought that I can get my old rate again. WHAT?!? Leaves me on hold to speak to his manager. Comes back to tell me "NO, YOU CAN'T GET THAT RATE BECAUSE YOU ALREADY HAD IT." Here is the best part: I tell him ok fine I'm done with dealing with a company that doesn't understand the meaning of honesty-I want to cancel my service. Puts me on hold..I have no idea where he has gone now. Turns out he transferred me to the Local Care department. Eric takes my call. In 10 minutes, he has me back at my old rate, though unfortunately I am on another 1 year contract. (In all honesty I will be glad to pay $75 to do early cancelation if it comes to it cause I really don't want to deal with them again.) Eric also informs me that there had been no notation of my conversation with Ms. Dewey on Monday (the lady who told me to call back on Wed.) nor is there record of me speaking to the man who told me I couldn't get back on my old rate. Thanks for being sketchy RCN! On another note our house has seperate cable and internet service plans both from RCN. The guys who came to service us tried to get us to bundle our internet and cable plans cause they said it would be cheaper. Should make sense right? I just switched from Verizon FiOS (which I did like overall) to RCN about 3 weeks ago and so far I'm very happy with the results. I'm paying about $40 less per month and get faster internet speeds (110 for RCN vs 75 for Verizon) and more premium movie channels. What I especially love is that RCN DVRs uses TiVo for the OS/UI of their DVRs and it's much better than Verizon's in-house equivalent. It's great to have a TiVo that ALSO can do their on-demand programming with no need for a separate cable card. I had a couple minor issues around e-mail set-up and a couple other questions and my initial experiences with RCNs support were good. Finally, I'm also very happy with picture quality: I was worried it would be a step down from Verizons but it's as good if not a bit better, especially on some of the minor channels like AMC's or Bravo's HD channels. read more

The internet constantly going in and out - phones and- had an appointment after third time happening in 3 weeks - came home from cape cod to meet technician who recorded the wrong day and time . So once again no service for another 3 days . Offered Me two time slots 9-1 or 1-5 . When I requested a smaller time frame so I could make a 12:30 appointment because otherwise if they came at 12 o'clock I would miss my 1230 appointment if they came at 1 o'clock I might not have returned in time for a 1 o'clock appointment which ruin the whole day and they would not No apology of the time. I see lots reviews at so many star ratings and issues, so I don't know what to say to that. I can just share my experiences. I started with RCN in 1998 or so when they came to town. They were the cheapest and fastest back then for modem. I have been a fairly loyal customer expect for 2 years with Verizon FIOS which was okay when it worked. In my 2 years with Verizon I had numerous techs come by and many, maybe 8 router/modems change-outs. Then back to RCN. I also use RCN at my business. For about a week the internet was not doing well, finally I called them yesterday. Within a minute the tech on the phone said we gotta send someone out there, when will you be in? In an hour or less 2 RCN trucks pulled up and two huge guys emerged. Traced the signal from modem to router to back of store connections to the pole to outside splitters etc. They were fast and efficient and more importantly, they were there helping me within moments of the call. In less than an hour we were up and running 100% speed. A wire of about 50' had to be changed out over the roof. Amazing service. They tested my up and down speeds on 2 different programs and we're where we should be. I only use 25/15 here at work. It's all I need. And I pay $40/month for that. I mean, no one comes close. I called to asked the customer service rep to outline my bill with me- when he was u able to do so, I asked to speak to customer service supervisor who he said would call me back within two hours, yet I never heard back. Their customer "service" people are bitchy and snippy and pushy and are very quick to blame the customer for any error or miscommunication (usually on the company's part). As someone that has worked a customer service line, the consistently bad service has tarnished this entire company for me. I am the customer - I am paying YOUR paycheck. You are supposed to be provided a service to assist the customer. Someone might want to have these morons re-read they're job descriptions and the look up the definition of what good customer service is. I see the poor reviews and I once would have agreed ( at another apartment, in 2007, I used RCN and their tech support was horrendous; condescending, unhelpful and basically made you feel like you needed to be a techie geek to talk to them). However, I have begun using them again in my current apartment (due to my anti-comcast agenda). I have to say, they have undergone a dramatic change in their tech support department. I don't remember who I spoke with last time I needed help, but this time I spoke to Ty (?). And both times, they were polite, helpful and knowledgable, like above and beyond. They didn't just help me figure out how to fix what was wrong, but they explained it to me, patiently,calmly and kindly. I have absolutely nothing but positive things to say about them. First of all, I have had RCN for over 10 years. The phone tech support is EXCELLENT. I have never had any internet problems that were serious. On the other hand, the office in Arlington is another story. Shelia is long gone and the black lady that replaced her at the front desk is "nothin nice". They made a big deal out of no pets-like what are you in there for, 5 minutes to pay your bill? The last draw was the hugely offensive plexiglass barrier between Miss Thang and the customers. When I am on the Internet and click on a site it takes a long time to load so I checked the speed and I see that I pay for 250 but I'm only getting under 5 at the time. I've called many times and get a different answer each time. I've had four different people come over and nobody has fixed the problem. Being new to Boston, my roomate and I chose the first company that came up. The price seemed decent for internet and cable, so we decied to take the deal. It lasted 1 year...before they hiked up the prices. Ouch, that hurt pretty badly In January, my roomate and I decided to cancel our cable. RCN told me that this shouldn't be a problem, so long as I sent them back the tivo box. They told me I would be able to ship it to them to avoice the $50(!!) fee they would charge me if they sent someone to pick up the box. I was told I would be mailed the return slip so I could send it back. No Return Slip came. I called a week later in order to see if the slip was on it's way. This particular person told me that no, it had not been sent, and they would email me the slip. NO SLIP CAME. It took me FIVE calls to finally get the company to send someone out to grab the dammed box without charging me. It took them 3 minutes to walk up the stairs adn grab the box. Instead of putting the money back onto my card, they CREDITED my account. I have not been put through the runaround and told it will take about a month if I want my money back. Seriously, this company is horrible. I was also charged $15 for them to send me a new remote, since the one they had send us was already broken. Worst. Company. EVER. I cannot wait to drop them. read more

I don't have much to say other than to look at the ratings. People review things that they like and things that they hate. Which way are the ratings trending? Simply put get RCN if you want a 2 star provider. Ps. I've been a loyal subscriber for 3 years. The customer service team will do "anything they can to help" until the next problem pops up a week or two later. Again this is a 3 year sample size... I truthfully have placed over 15 phone calls and at least 5 service visits. Avoid if you expect to come home to a working tv and wireless Internet. read more

I tried RCN again after a break: * They have fast Internet - but only when it works. * The connection has been intermittent since I upgraded the line. * RCN sent a technician to take a look, tweaked a few things, but ultimately didn't solve the problem. * Each time they send a technician, they threaten to charge you if he cannot find an RCN problem. I'd suggest using a different provider, although I honestly don't know which others are better. read more

RCN is awesome. After years of frustration with Comcast, we switched over to RCN last year for our internet. What we got was the anti-Comcast. Internet at higher speeds, for far less money than Comcast, with no BS equipment leasing fees. For the past 9 months, we've had no issues with our internet use, and that includes heavy amounts of streaming. Service far exceeded Comcast's. Now, we're moving to Coolidge Corner, which apparently is still a Comcast exclusive zone, and we're not happy at all about it. RCN provides great service, at an affordable price, with nice, human customer service reps, and no hidden fees to jack up your bill. They run how a cable company should run. If RCN becomes available in our new neighborhood, we're switching immediately. read more
