Brought our car in because the maintenance light was on. We dropped our car off the night before after hours and they graciously opened the door for us because we didn't know where to drop our keys. I'm new to the area, and in the almost five years I've had my car, I've only had two mechanics: my dad and a family friend. I was really worried about dropping my Chevy Cruze off at a mechanic with one issue and get a call the next day saying they'd also done some additional, more expensive work I didn't want done; my boyfriend was burned by some Midas in the western suburbs. I'm so glad I called ATB! Kris at ATB was great about answering my questions, even if she had to go hunt them down and call me back she always did. The place is not too hard to find. I dropped my car off on a Wednesday night, and even though I wasn't great about answering her phone calls, I got it back on Saturday before the long weekend. It's always been a problem for me to find an honest, reliable mechanic who can do work for a fair price while not trying to get extra money out of me. ATB, as the 5-star rating indicates, is as good as it gets. Years ago, I had problems with headlights and taillights on the drivers side. Took it to a few places. These other places replaced bulbs and fixtures, and after a few weeks, the problem would resurface. I finally took the car into ATB. After some investigation, they found faulty wiring on the driver's side. They repaired the wiring harness, and the problem has been resolved ever since. The repair was also less than $50. Most importantly, these guys did the necessary investigation to find out what was really causing the problem and made the fix trying to sell me unnecessary stuff. I don't want to remember the days before Yelp and online reviews... I don't want to think about how much money I wasted away on crappy mechanics and overpriced dealer services. Tom and Kris of ATB Automotive are the real deal. They are honest, fair, fast, and most importantly, reasonable. I've now had 2 complicated repairs done by them on my SUV, and I really can't think of anywhere else I'd like to take my car for the tough stuff. Case in point is my Mercury Mariner. It just hit that delightful 100,000 mile mark, and I have decided I want to keep it rather than having a car payment. At 100K it needed the spark plugs changed and some radiator work done. Tom told me in advance (before I dropped the car off) how much the services would be, and then called me after he "officially" diagnosed the issue, and the prices were the same. Too often you get someone who claims in addition to A and B that you need X, Y, and Z, too... and that'll be an extra $300..... not here. I'm not saying he won't ever find more damage after inspection, but I appreciate the level honesty. The quality of the work is excellent. I'm really happy to give this small, family owned business five stars for their work. read more

There's not much to say beyond the other five star reviews ATB has earned. This VERY friendly husband-and-wife team will put your mind at ease while they work on your car. Thankfully, I haven't had much need for car repairs in the past few years, but I'm glad I followed my fellow Yelpers to find ATB. The scenario: my car was making a great amount of noise from the belt area. Turns out I was right - the alternator was all rusted through and having a hard time turning (it'll happen to you around 80k miles - had the same thing happen to my `96 Oldsmobile Ciera). Not once did I feel rushed. Not once did I feel as though the wool was being pulled over my eyes. Not once did I feel swindled. Not once did I second-guess bringing my car here - or leaving it here - for a repair. If you've experienced any of the above with a different auto repair shop, then stop going there! Tom's been in the business for 30 years and is as knowledgeable as Click n Clack on NPR (wait...maybe that's not a compliment). We'll be bringing our cars here from now on. All I can say is .... Tom is an HONEST Mechanic. I brought my vehicle in for an overheating issue and $75 later it's back to it's normal working condition. No doubt they have fixed my car a few times and do great work. Have had no problems with my car afterwards. Very nice people and shop is easily accessible. My only issues are that they don't have later hours during the week so I have to take off of work to get there on time, and it seems both times I took my car there they didn't have the parts required to fix it. With that being said, it took an extra day or I had to take the time to bring it back another day. I don't know if I have just lucked out at other mechanics, but I have never had to wait for a part to come in. I usually get my car in and out in the same day. Also, when my car was in their shop for repair, I was the one who had to call them for an update. If I brought my car in the night before, I would hope by early afternoon I would have gotten a phone call. Overall I was happy with my repairs, but not sure about my future car needs there. read more

This place is excellent. Every time I go in they never overcharge me or charge me for work I don't need. As just one example, I thought I needed new shocks, while they told me I might in a while, they are still fine for now and did not need replacing. When I thanked Kris (mechanic's wife) profusely for not doing work I did not need, she responded that they always treat people how they would want to be treated. It is clear this is how they approach every customer. I would recommend this place to anyone who knows very little to nothing about cars. They take the time to explain to you what is going on no matter how many questions you might have. Like a previous poster commented, this shop is truly a breath of fresh air in an industry where people are constantly overcharging or trying to deceive their customers. Went in because I heard a squeak from my brakes and thought they needed replacing. The inspected it and found the brakes only 50% worn so they said there's no need to. I appreciated the honesty. Found out later the brakes we're squeaking from condensation on the rotors, which is normal when your car is wet. I asked if I can get my tires rotated, to my surprise, they did it for free. Update: I went back because I needed a new tire and my brakes were squeaking so I figured I needed them replaced as well. I got a call back from them giving me options on which tire I would like. They also informed me that my brakes were fine, just squeaky and did not need to be replaced. Again I am so impressed with then. They could have easily told me my brakes needed to be replaced since that is what I was expecting. Their honesty means so much to me and that is why I will never go anywhere else. read more

I rarely ever give 5 stars. But this shop deserves it. They have saved us time and money. Very friendly and professional. For example, I wanted new beak pads. Tom (the mechanic) told me that I still had 15k left on them. I told him to go ahead and change them anyways. Tom insisted that I wait because I still had time and waiting will save me money in the long run. He also worked on my husbands car. We had an issue with a piston coil that needed some observation before work could be done. We also wanted a tune up. Tom suggested we wait till we figure out the piston problem and do the tune up at the same time to save on labor. I am so happy to have found a trust worthy mechanic that is not a chain and where my money goes to small businesses and not the pockets of filthy rich chain executives. read more

At the risk of making ATB more popular I feel that people should know that these people are a hard working family. I have only gone one time but I already trust them totally. Yes I had the work checked. Yes I did exercise some patience BUT it was well worth it. We plan on going back before the cold snap. There is such a terrible shortage of patience these days but I could see there are some smart patient people going to ATB. As far as the comment from Rachel, I can't really figure out what she is saying except that she wanted their total attention which is unreasonable as these people are in business to make a profit while still charging a reasonable price. Also their goal during the day is to finish each car that comes in in the morning by the end on the business day. And they don't work nights but fortunately they do work a SHORT Saturday probably for emergencies. read more

Tom and his wife are great! I have a 07 Subaru Outback with oil leak problem. I brought the car initially to another place and they quoted me $170 buck to change an oil pressure sensor. I can not trust that shop since they already changed my oil pan gasket and I believe it was not the problem. After I brought the car to Tom, he inspected twice without any charge and then fixed the problem with much lower price I paid. Very satisfied with his work and definitely will use his again.
