Lots of exhibits and a very well done 4 minute movie with an introduction out front by a talking Snapping Turtle. They do have a Cancelation Stamp for your NP Book if you ask - It is a National Heritage Area. Very clean restrooms & picnic areas make this the perfect spot to recharge, and give the kids & adult children a chance to learn about the area. read more

This is a wonderful rest area. It's almost hidden away. Driving across the Basin Bridge it is easy to get focused on the road and drive right on by. Very clean and quiet. Lots of parking. The bathrooms were decent. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. What I liked the most was the free coffee! And what's more, they are serving up Mellow Joy coffee (a local Cajun brand) instead of the usual Community Coffee you get most everywhere. Two thumbs up! read more

The Atchafalaya Welcome Center is one of the finest welcome centers I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. It is hands down the friendliest welcome center I have EVER visited, as the employees here are absolutely wonderful. Located off I-10 between Baton Rouge and Lafayette, this welcome center would be easy to miss if you are not paying attention to the signs; so pay attention, as you'll be very happy that you stopped here. It is located off the I-10 Butte LaRose exit at exit 121 and is an official statewide provider of tourism information. Pay attention when entering, as there is separate facility for automobiles and another one for trucks and RV's. The parking lot is huge and in my semi-frequent stops here, I have never seen it filled even close to capacity. Just before you walk up to the actual welcome center, there is a separate building housing the restrooms and vending machines. Although the facilities are a little dated, they are impeccably clean. The actual welcome center looks like an Acadian styled home with a big wrap-around porch. Upon entering, you are courteously and enthusiastically greeted by the helpful staff, many of who speak fluent French. Working the desk were Gary and another lady whose name escapes me at the moment. They asked if they could be of any assistance, welcomed me to their site and pointed me to enjoy a free cup of coffee.. It's fitting that they offer Mello Joy coffee (the original Cajun coffee), as they are located just west off I-10 in Lafayette, LA. I was immediately taken back at how this place looked more like an Acadian museum rather than a welcome center. Manager Brandy works wonders with her budget and is responsible for much of the décor, a lot of which she crafts herself. She is as friendly as the day is long and works side by side with her staff no matter what the chore involves. Out back, there is a walking trail , picnic areas and metal statues of local wildlife. It's a perfect place to let the kids unwind and stretch their legs while you enjoy your complimentary coffee. Back inside, there is a wonderful exhibit which "portrays the history and lifestyle of the Atchafalaya Basin" and there's also a 5 minute film that I highly recommend. Out front, there's also a monument celebrating the 82nd Airborne Division and the many French speaking Cajuns from Louisiana and their role in the D-Day invasion of Normandy in World War II. I stop here every single time I am passing along I-10, as it's almost like stopping by a friend's place. I recommend you stop here on your travels and you'll likely feel the same way. Some facts I picked up about the Atchafalaya Basin: *An American-Indian word, "Atchafalaya" meaning long river. *It is among the most culturally rich and ecologically varied regions in the United States, home to the widely recognized Cajun culture as well as a diverse population of European, African, Caribbean and Native-American descent. * It is larger than the Florida Everglades * It's five times more productive than any other river basin in North America * About 65 species of reptiles and amphibians inhabit the Basin * Over 250 known species of birds fly in the Basin * Other species of animals found in the area include black bear, nutria, fox, muskrat, beaver, otter and raccoon * The Basin is home to the largest nesting concentration of bald eagles in the south central United States * There are more than 100 different species of fish and aquatic life in the Basin * The Basin has an estimated average annual commercial harvest of nearly 22 million pounds of crawfish * The Basin contains the largest contiguous bottomland hardwood forest in North America and is the largest overflow alluvial hardwood swamp in the United States Even if you can see a piece of the Atchafalaya, you will come to respect it. This is a great little welcome and rest area along I-10. They have bathrooms outside the welcome center, with some snacks in the middle of the bathroom entrances. The machines take credit too! The welcome center has fresh coffee and lots of local history through displays and books of the basin. There is also a little theatre with a 5 minute show. No gift shop, but there's a nice play area in the back for the kids with several statues of local wildlife. There are lots of pamphlets of the local southern Louisiana area as well. Some rocking chairs in the lobby invite you to sit a bit and just relax a little from the road fatigue that I-10 gives you. Make it point to stop here if you have the time and take a look back in time to a beautiful part of Louisiana. read more

I never seem to have enough time to explore when I stop here, and there is just so much to explore. Easy access to get on and off the I-10. Very clean facilities. Plenty of room to walk around, so many things to look at. The restrooms are so very clean! Impressive! Large parking lots to move about. One section for large vehicles, one for cars. Employees are easily spotted during business hours, a spot for security, I am assuming 24 hour security. Lots of picnic tables, green space to walk your animals and smoll children. Great spot to stop between Lafayette and Baton Rouge, the same facilities serve both east and west bound I-10. read more

I've always found this to be an interesting stop, the folks are friendly and the free coffee is fresh. There are lots of cultural exhibits that provides some insight into everything that makes Louisiana special, there's really no other place in the world like it so it's definitely worth a stop if time allows. The restrooms are always very clean and there's plenty of parking and also lots of green space is you want to relax and explore some of the areas off property just be aware of your surroundings, you wouldn't want to disturb the local residents so be sure to keep your kids close and your pets on a short lease... read more

Just love this place. Stopped briefly to stretch my legs and ended up watching an animatronic animal exhibit, stepped inside to a small private movie theater to take in a brief 4 minute film about the area and it's history, took a quick walk out back amongst the the wildlife statues and butterflies, chatted with the friendly desk employees, and enjoyed a free coffee for the road. Super clean and cute. This is separate from the very nice truck rest area next door. So glad I stopped by. read more

Our family will be stopping here every time it crosses our path on road trips in the future! Our two and three year old ADORED the swamp movie theatre and talking animals! The short film taught us about the Atchafalaya swamps and had black lighting which made our outfits glow in the dark. The manager welcomed us with free coloring books and stickers for our girls and offered us free coffee. The grounds and bathrooms were impeccable and made diaper changing a breeze. Little gazebos and animals decorate the lawn which makes this center a great spot to lay out a few blankets and have a family picnic. There's ample seating inside, dim lighting and a fireplace to make you feel at home away from home. Wish we could've stayed longer. Please don't pass without visiting! read more

You can enter this Welcome Center off I-10 from either the east or west bound sides. It is east of Lafayette. The Welcome Center is closed for only 4 holidays: New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, & Christmas Day. They are open from 8:30 AM-5:00 PM. I love learning about the Louisiana swamp! This facility is much more than a mere welcome center, it is also a mini-museum!! It offers a view into swamp life with displays and a short 4 minute movie. There's a sign that says "You are smack dab in the middle of North America's largest river swamp". On their back porch are a few displays and a huge turtle sculpture. And out on the grass next to the building, there are a few metal animals. You can see gators, birds, and a turtle. The Welcome Center looks like a house with a nice wrap around porch! There is a ramp on the side for people who prefer not to or can't use stairs. As with other Louisiana Welcome Centers, they do offer complimentary Community coffee. There are plenty of maps, brochures and magazines with info on "touristy" type of things in the area & state. + There are restrooms for humans and a pet rest area for the furry ones. + You can park your car and sleep in there if you have need to do so. Don't drive drowsy, it is very dangerous! + There is one covered picnic area, maybe more + Vending Machines Be sure to come during the Welcome Center's operating hours, so you can take advantage of more than the restrooms, parking space, and the lawn animals!. read more

One of the best welcome center/rest stops that I have ever seen. Uniquely located in the Atchalafaya Swamp between Baton Rouge and Lafayette, it is a small oasis for you to stop and take a break while driving and also be provided some entertainment. The welcome center sits below I 10 because I 10 is on a long bridge as it proceeds across the swamp. So to get to it you have to descend into the swamp. The property is actually divided by the highway with truckers being on one side and cars/RV's on the other. Both sides have nice restrooms and vending areas with the car side also having the welcome center facility. To get from one side to the other you simply walk under the interstate bridge which is a short 50 yard walk. The trucker side would use it if they wanted to come over to the welcome center. The car/RV people wouldn't have many reasons to go to the other side. When you walk into the welcome center they serve free Louisiana based Community Coffee. The building is attractive and regionally decorated of course to reflect South Louisiana and the Swamp. Brochures, pamphlets, maps and friendly workers will help you with any tourist advice you need. They also have an excellent display about the Atchalafaya Swamp there. This includes an animated show with animal puppets (raccoon, alligator and large snapping turtle) that speak to you while turning their heads and moving their mouths. This lasts about 3 minutes. Then doors open into a small theater where you watch a 4 minute movie about the swamp. This exhibit is both entertaining and educational and FREE. You will enjoy it and your kids will love it. Outside of the building are numerous animal replicas for photo ops and art purposes. Also there is a military memorial to reflect on. If you are traveling on I 10 and pass by during their open hours you should really stop and take a few minutes to enjoy this excellent facility. read more

Worth the stop for sure! I found this rest stop on a "fun pit stops" website - it mentioned the animatronics show, which was a cute perk. The restrooms were clean and cool. The staff here were some of the nicest I've yet to meet. There was free coffee, cafe seating and lots of information about the local ecosystem, destinations and plentiful maps. It was a little bit off the road, but still worth it - nicer than a gas station for sure. read more

I really like this impossible to spell welcome center. I stop here whenever I am driving though Louisiana as it is easily accessed from I-10. The bathrooms are clean, and I certainly have no complaints there. There are a lot of picnic areas, so if you decide to pack a lunch for your drive this is a good place to stop and eat it. There is a lot of wide open space so my dog likes to stretch its legs here after being cramped in the car for a few hours. I believe they have free coffee inside the welcome center, but I have never tried to get any of it. There are clean bathrooms, lots of open space, and lots of picnic areas. This place was a good place to rest and even sleep. They ask you don't sleep on the car side of the rest area, but no one bothers you if you do. The truck side is usually a bit noisy to sleep with the truck engines going. As of 6/28/14 this place is undergoing renovation. There is very little room to park on the car side. And the truck side has their bathrooms closed. read more

Being in a sedan the Security guard gave me the thumbs up anyway and I made my car liveable for the night. Slept like a baby. This has been renovated and is truly the BEST rest area ever. Access is easy from either direction. The car area is separated from truck parking. There claims to be 24 hr security, although I didnt see any. Truck parking spots with a perfect angle to swing your tractor into, wide areas in front and behind, restrooms, well lit, clean, a low hum of traffic on the overpass to lull you to sleep...this place is awesome. read more
