Athena Beans coffee house didn't leave as much of an imprint on me as I was anticipating. The vibes were off... It felt like having coffee in a public library. The layout is a bit of a maze and it's not super obvious where to go to order when you first walk in. And the staff wasn't super attentive. The coffee was okay. I ordered the Athena latte and my boyfriend ordered an iced americano. Neither one of us disliked our drinks but we weren't in any rush to go back for more. Athena Bean is a good coffee shop, but not necessarily one I would recommend as a local favorite. read more

This is one of our favorite, go-to coffee shops. The ambience is hard to beat, with lots of comfortable seating, paintings by local artists on display for sale, and cozy lighting. Plenty of space to be away from a large group enjoying their coffee time Ordered vanilla latte and it was delicious. I walk in and I am ignored when I asked a question Raegan and the other employee started making fun of the brace I have to wear on my arm. The food came out cold and burnt, something I didn't think was possible. The croissant sandwich was difficult to chew and the burnt flavor overpowered everything. Service made the experience worse. The employee assisting me, Raegan, was dismissive and unfriendly from the moment I walked in. When I asked for a refund or replacement, she walked away without responding and laughed with another employee in the back. If she has a learning disabilty I can understand the inappropriate attitude as a cashier. I do want to recognize Audrey, the manager on shift, who handled the situation professionally. I stopped by Athena's Sunday morning, and it was lively and busy! I tried their Athena Coffee and Avocado Toast. The toast was seasoned well and held up while eating. Anytime I have avocado toast, it usually gets soggy, but this one stayed intact and was delicious! The iced coffee was okay. I liked the flavor, but it was more like lukewarm coffee. I sat at a small bar, but they have plenty of seating for groups, small to large. The upstairs is reserved for events, but overall, the space is still quite spacious. read more

Came here on Sunday afternoon for some late breakfast. I really like how spacious this place is. Modern restaurants have everyone in one room, almost sitting on top of each other, but this place is spread out and there's lots of seating. On area even has chess and other board games. I saw a couple bring in their Sequence set and started playing. Really nice place to relax without ten thousand people around you. Friendly customer service too. I got the vanilla yogurt parfait. This was super good! Fresh berries and crunchy granola. I appreciated how the berries and granola were at the top, middle and bottom so you're not stuck eating the bottom half of just yogurt. Also got the peanut butter, banana, honey and cinnamon toast. The toast was a rosemary focaccia bread. It wasn't super hard but toasted just right. The place seemed pretty clean. At Athena Beans you get a McDonald's frappe for $10 and have to deal with immature staff and cashiers who do not care what a high standard even means I have never felt more disrespected and scared that my food was tampered with as I did today. Food was burnt and cold unfortunately within minutes of trying a bite I was sick to my stomach. The health department has been notified and I hope the worker Regan no longer has employment. No regard for food safety or how to be professional. I can help dear, first start by brushing your teeth and hair, try to smile and communicate like the big girl you are. Everything is not a joke or maybe she is disabled and slow. If that is the case Athena should be sure she is not the face of your establishment nor who handles the food until she has had proper training. I get that your young and being cool is so important to you but guaranteed no one gives a shit about being cool but do care about how uncool and gross the inside of you is. There are two kinds of coffee shops. Ones that know the coffee making process which is chemistry. And the ones that just make a cup of coffee with no regard to the taste, temperature, flavor and artistic process. The ones with lack of training to their staff. Big mistake one: Unfortunately they brought out a child steamer that was so so hot for a 9 year old that it burned the kid's tongue enough to give them a sore tongue for 3 days. I don't understand why you would set a child up for such a thing. They don't want their drink hot. Steaming the milk too long burns the milk and then burns mouths. This is Barista rule number one. The drink never cooled down enough for the kid to enjoy it. The drink was so hot it burned your hand holding the drink sleeve. As for the coffee - flat white oat milk - again over steamed! Burned the oat milk. Ruined the coffee flavors. No regard to what the flat white is. Disappointed for sure. A little direction and training can prevent these major coffee barista naïve mistakes. To me these kinds of things make or break a coffee shop. Handing a kid a scolding hot drink is reckless and careless. Think about it. If she would have spilled it on her lap, we would have gone straight to an urgent care. Uncool! The food was good. Liked the sit down and play games style. Came for their beans, they're excellent. Asked the barista a simple question about them and she was very unhelpful, just said I don't know, didn't even try to help. My husband got a smoothie, they apologized because a large order of smoothies had come in just before so it was a few minutes. When she went to make it, she looked very confused and distracted. Took her a good six or seven minutes as she just kept adding more and more orange juice because it wasn't blending. The end result was a TEN DOLLAR smoothie that tasted like orange juice and banana. This is my second visit to this little gem of a place. I had to come back for the lavender scones, they're so good I have to buy 2. I rarely buy avocado toast anymore because I've eaten way too many and they've become boring, however I tried theirs the last time I was here and haven't stopped thinking about how savory it was. The atmosphere was so cozy and perfect. They also had chess and other games you could sit and play with friends. The food wasn't anything to really write home about. We tried the breakfast croissant, avocado toast, parfait, blueberry muffin and an assortment of drinks. The drink menu was very unique with coffees and lattes. I tried the hot chocolate which was very basic. The best thing was definitely the avocado toast. The service was subpar. You can tell the people are there to do their job and then go home. So you might come here for coffee, but you may also see art exhibits, arts and crafts vendors or even a dance night. I love how dynamic the place is and that they've done more than just serve coffee. My wife and I visited and ordered a drip coffee for me-I'm not a fancy drink kind of person, plain and simple is good for me-and something with ice cream and chocolate in it for her. She didn't love her drink, but that may just be a personal preference. You order at a counter, then find a table and your drinks are brought to you. I appreciate that because it can get a bit congested up front and it's a little unclear where the line to the register is. This place continues to be amazing. Though they have changed the food menu and we lost a few items, what they condensed it to is very good and allows them to focus more on what's really important - THE COFFEE!!! I've enjoyed all the drinks I've tried - especially their Holiday specials! All the staff has been super pleasant to work with, they're friendly when we ask, "Can you make it with (this) or (that?)" Being so close to I-15 with a large parking lot, this place ends up being a good starting point for many of our motorcycle rides. HELL YES!!! Now this is what I'm talking about. This is my idea of a REAL coffee shop. One that has a delightful quirk around every corner and caters to people sitting together and having one of those coffee shop convos over a killer brew. This cafe has a vibe from the 90s (in all the best ways; if you know, you know!) and I am in love. Athena has it all, great coffee, delicious food, and a cool atmosphere. It feels little and quaint, but it really is a large space with lots of seating options and areas, some dimly lit and moody, others glowing with natural light next to big windows. It boasts beautiful hand painted murals, a hammock chair, a chess board, plants, coffee beans and thermoses, and psilocybin merch! I ordered a large white mocha, it was amazing, rich, toasty, a little nutty, flavorful, bold, just sweet enough. I was pleasantly surprised by the Mediterranean avocado toast. It got an audible "mmmmm!" from me. The focaccia was seasoned nicely, and was just crunchy enough without being too hard, there were fresh microgreens and arugula under a perfectly cooked egg over easy. The portion size was just enough. The service was great. They are real people, there are no uniforms or rehearsed and over branded pleasantries, just baristas making fantastic coffee - and then they leave you alone to do what you came there for, relax and enjoy your company, or your peace and quiet. Kicking myself that I've passed Athena by without visiting sooner. Ass over applecart in love with this place. I can't wait to go back! 10/10 recommend. read more

It's probably my favorite coffee shop. If you're looking for the perfect place to work or bring a date, this is it. There is ALWAYS seating. Not because it isn't popular or good, but because this may in fact be the first coffee shop ever built with enough space and room. Multiple seating areas, with cute nooks, chess sets, or options for a spacious booth. It's fun. It's quirky. They've got some fun specialty drinks. This last time I branched out from my usual and got the Apollo. Delicious. I'm going to have to try more of their fun flavors. The girl helping me at the window was adorable, but to my dismay (because I've heard good things about this haunt), the coffee was horrid. I'm a big coffee connoisseur and know what's what around town. I ordered a cappuccino and it came out tongue-biting hot and without any finesse. It was even watery. My guess is that the baristas haven't been trained on craft coffee and how to micro foam and/or their oat milk doesn't meet the craft coffee standard. Maybe this isn't a craft coffee spot, but for charging over $6 a cappuccino, it should be. I pay less downtown and receive far superior! read more

This place was completely fine. It's a place that could be good to great with a little effort. We sat on the patio and it was completely average. There were a few flowers and four tables. With a little green cover around the railway it could feel chill and more secluded and fun. But they didn't do that. It's just a basic patio next to a parking lot. But still it's a patio so yeah great there is some outdoor seating. The service was all together confusing. It's a coffe shop with some food attached, I think? There are a number of tables inside and out that aren't covered by any table service. The barista brought us our food but that was the extent of it. So that was wierd. For any additional requests you had to go back up to the front and order and pay. It was just an awkwardly set up situation. Maybe they are pulling back on food and focusing on the coffee or something. It was hard to tell. What I could see is there wasn't adequate help for the tables provided. The food was really confusing as well and frustrating because they did a lot really well but just stopped before it could have been great. My girlfriend got the avo eggs and toast and the toast and the avo were on point. Like so much avo it was almost too much. Which is an amazing problem to have. But the egg was so basic and there was only one and she wasn't even asked how she wanted it cooked. So what we got was a ton of nice avo and nice toast with a basic tiny egg that was in between over easy and mostly over hard. In the cooks defense no one asked my gf how it was supposed to be cooked so she didn't say. So it was both on us for not telling the barista and on the barista for not asking. This again comes back to this place maybe focusing less on food now or something. Who knows. But it is super unfortunate because they did the expensive part, avo, so right and just bumbled the cheap egg portion. Super unfortunate. I got a croissant sandwich which again was a mixed bag. Eggs were awesome but the croissant left so much to be desired. If they'd found a local bakery to get nice stuff my sandwich would have been lovely. The coffee was lovely. So, again, maybe I'm missing the aim of this place and coffee is the main product. So take my review under that consideration. Overall I just feel like we left with regrets of what could have been at this place. But it was completely OK. read more

Found them on Instagram, I have been following them for a few months and had to stop by. Great place! Honestly probably my new favorite coffee place. Coffee and breakfast here is delicious. My main reason to loving the place is the vibe and the space. Plenty of space to find an intimate place to hang out and work in piece. Its quiet here, I can get so much done. Or just to hang out with my family. Its always nice to change your office/home environment and hang out somewhere else and this place just has it all. I came in on a Sunday to have some alone time and to read a book. I'm getting decaf these days, for fetal reasons. Right when I ordered, their decaf machine went into cleaning mode, so I had to wait a while for my drink. I set up outside, where I had my apple streusel muffin as I waited for my latte. The muffin came straight out of a fridge, so I wasn't a huge fan of that. A muffin should be warm if not just room temp. But other than that, it was good. There were actual apple pieces in it, which was different. My drink was decent; it's hard to get a latte wrong. My service was good. My only other suggestion for this place to improve is to clean off the outside tables. It's probably less relevant now with the weather cooling off, but it was still nice out when I went, and the table and chairs were really dirty and dusty. I didn't love putting my food or my book on the table. It seems to be a good place to put your head down and get some work done, if you like a coffee shop for that. I also know my brother in law has had business meetings here. I would suggest giving it a go, and maybe just staying inside for your experience. read more

I should start by saying I'm not the biggest coffee fan, and by that I mean coffee is usually too strong and bitter for me. I'm more of a sweet tooth kinda gal... *frappes and chai lattes are my to go to*. I came on a Friday morning, ordered a chai latte and a iced cappuccino and walked around, checking out the ambiance while my drinks were being made. They have beautiful paintings and a nice study area, there is also an upstairs where they do open mic nights! I checked out the whole place, sat down and waited 20+ minutes for my drinks. Please keep in mind there was only one other person that had ordered. Drink: 2/5 The chai flavor was barely detected, it was more of a sugary milk kinda drink. I was disappointed that for a 20+ minute wait my drink barely resembled a chai latte. The iced cappuccino was decent. Overall, the interior of the shop is inviting and beautiful. But with the wait time & disappointing drink I doubt I will be visiting again any time soon. read more

This is a coffee shop I keep returning to because the chia tea latte is superb without being too sweet. I couldn't try many things on their breakfast menu because they come pre-made and I'm no diary, but I can say the avocado toast is perfection. They used to have this macrame swing that was my favorite seat, I'm not sure if it got moved but it's not there anymore. But they don't lose a star for that because everything else is so perfect. Shout out to Lala P. for letting me know that Athena Coffee opened up! I'm a sucker for coffee shops so you bet your ass that I drove all the way from Rose Park to Sandy for Athena. Once I walked in, the first thing I noticed was the cozy fireplace. I loved it considering how cold it has been lately. To the left, was a stairway to a lounge area that should be finished soon? They had plenty of tables and even had a cute swing/hammock. My friends were already ordering by the time I got done scoping out the area. Even though I already had a big breakfast, I couldn't help myself so I ordered the migos poblanos, goddess plate, and smashed avocado toast with a dirty almond chai. I could have done without the avocado toast though. The flavors were quite bland even with the chili flakes on top. However, the dirty chai, migos poblanos, and goddess plate were all really good. The owner also graciously let my friends and I stay and work even though they haven't opened the inside yet (drive-thru is open). After working for two or three hours, we ordered some juices, croissant, and cookies. I can't remember the names of the juices but both were refreshing. The vegan oatmeal cookie was amazing while the non-vegan oatmeal cookie tasted more like a cake. Overall, my friends and I will be back. We got coffee at Athena and it was good! The coffee was great. I was really disappointed in their food menu, though. So many items were unavailable and it was not inclusive for those with allergies. They did not have a single gluten free option, which was super disappointing for me. I would come back for coffee and work as the atmosphere was the perfect place for a homework or work vibe. But as someone who has a lot of allergies, i couldn't eat there. I hope they will work on getting some allergy friendly menu items as gluten and dairy allergies are very prevalent. read more
