I think we both thought we'd be disappointed with most of the Greek let downs in Orlando. We visited on a Sunday afternoon while biking around. You order at the counter and you can eat inside or take it to go. Their menu is pretty large, so there's something for everyone. For our first visit we went with the tanini gyro, $7.49 and added two sides for $3.70. The roasted potatoes were so good, it almost tasted like there was cinnamon on it or something. I've been to Athena a couple of times, but I always got the quarter chicken. Today I decided to try the chicken gyro and I wish I hadn't. The chicken itself and the sides are always delicious, but the texture of the chicken gyro caught me off guard. It was kind of like eating a gyro with coleslaw, which wasn't what I was expecting. I tried this place on an afternoon waiting for an appointment I had nearby. I ordered a regular gyro. When it came out looked great and fresh. When I bit it, the meat barely had flavor and the gyro slices were very thin and it had way more bread and lettuce than actual meat. I'm used to the opposite with gyros. I wanted to love this as it looked so good and you can tell the veggies, pita, bread and meat were all very fresh, even the white sauce. But they skimped too much on the meat and missing flavor. The chicken looked really good. I may try that in the future but as for the gyro I have had way better in the Orlando area. read more

I'm normally not a fan of lamb gyro because it's typically super greasy, but this one was the opposite. I ordered at the counter and my food was out in less than 10 minutes. First time going here. Went due to the menu online. The menu online is different than the one they serve? Arrived to find the rotisserie chickens under heat lamps and they looked like they had been there a while as they were starting to wrinkle up and look dried out. The sides were also under heat lamps. This was kind of like cafeteria style, all food already cooked and sitting under heat lamps, for what looked like due to the appearance of the food quite some time. The location shows its age. Would love to see them do a remodel but also understand how hard that is for small businesses. Service was quick and the young lady that tough my order was nice. There are so many great Mediterranean restaurants here in Orlando, however we were so lucky to come here! I was in the mood for some roasted chicken, so this place popped out just by the name itself. First of all, prices are insanely reasonable. For $10-12 you can get a huge meal to fill you up! Do note that prices are temporarily up by 10%, and this is a separate charge you see on your receipt. Now the quality is just as insane. I got a half roasted chicken with potatoes and pasta salad. The pasta salad was perfect, it had the right amount of that 1000 island dressing. It was subtle enough to not overpower the dish, and paired with perfectly cooked pasta, it was fantastic. The roasted potatoes were also really good. I thoroughly enjoyed the light, mildly seasoned chunks of potatoes, allowing for the chicken to shine. Now the chicken. Oh my goodness. This was beautifully roasted. The chicken had a nice, slightly crispy and majorly flavorful skin that covered the juiciest chicken I've ever had. There was so much flavor infused throughout the meat, and it literally would fall apart on its own as I was eating it. Athena's is one of my favorite mom and pop chicken restaurants. They offer all your typical Greek fare including rotisserie chicken, gyros, lentil soups, hummus, tabuleh, and much more. Their food is delicious and it is like grandma's cooking. Their cooking is very olive oil forward and delicious. Chicken is moist, the roasted potatoes are to die for, and even something as simple as green beans has delicious flavor. I've been going here for many years and they are a staple in Maitland. There isn't table service but the cashier's have always been extra helpful and prompt with explaining their unique Greek dishes. When I'm feeling more adventurous than Publix rotisserie, I always choose Athena's. You can eat good without having the guilt of eating a bunch of empty calories. Can't wait to go back! read more

I had high hopes based on hearing from others but it wasn't underwhelming or overwhelming, I'm just whelmed. Went in on a Tuesday night and they were doing a pretty good takeout rush. Counter service was quick and friendly. I tried the chicken rice soup which I assumed was the lemon orzo soup (avegolemono) but turned out to just be a creamy rice soup with no lemon. However, the toasty pieces of chicken gave it a delicious flavor so I can't be too critical, just missed that brightness of the lemon. I got a half chicken with green beans and sautéed zucchini. The chicken was .... Ok? It wasn't anything amazing. It was fairly moist and the skin wasn't soggy but wasn't super crisp either. Not a lot of flavor sadly. The green beans were pretty terrible, no seasoning and like they were straight out of a can. The zucchini were good, sautéed with tomatoes and still had a little texture to them. Could have used more garlic though. All in all, I would roll by for that soup, especially on a rainy day, but not so much for the other food. read more

They are huge fans of the chicken pitas. But this place will work if your veg like me. There are a few options. The Greek salad is simple but always fresh. They are pre-made in the case which was initially off putting for me but fear not. One bite and you get that nice crunch from the veggies. I can tell they turn the items quickly and they aren't days old. It's a very filling option and is offered in two sizes. The best part is the generous block of feta they top it with. When a salad won't cut it, I go with the always hot and crispy spinach pie! It's one of my favorite comfort meals and can be upgraded to a meal w a side. And the sides are a hit as well. As simple as it's sounds, the grilled pita w hummus is a staple! Their hummus blend has great flavor and can be a wonderful addition to most anything on the menu. I was in a dessert mood tonight and grabbed a rice pudding. I was so excited to dig in but was met with mediocrity. Major let down there considering how tasty the food typically is. Tasted like watery rice with a pinch of cinnamon. Pass on that one! I might give the baklava a try next time though. Hoping it's a tastier choice. If you get one side dish, get the roasted potatoes. They are SO GOOD! I had the zesty feta chicken wrap and added tomato, lettuce, and onion to it. Loved it! I love Athena's! I've been eating here for years and will do so even more now that I work close by again AND they have an extensive GF menu. Everything is marked on their website. Chicken and almost all sides are GF along with their soups and salads. All wraps can be made GF by foregoing the pita and having it over a bed of Lettuce. *It lists all sides as GF but the menu is mistaken as the pasta salad is definitely not a safe option. Best. Oh yes. What a hidden gem. They have the BEST rotisserie chicken. Pre-Covid days I used to go here on my lunch break at least once a week. Even now that I'm working from home I still make the trek whenever I'm in the mood for fantastic Mediterranean food and excellent service. My go-to is the half white chicken plate with roasted potatoes and red beans with rice. It also comes with a side of pita. The chicken is perfect. The skin is excellently seasoned and the meat is juicy and flavorful. The potatoes are tender and soft and I could probably eat a pot of them if no one stopped me. The rice and beans are my wife's favorite and she usually gets a double portion of them! Servings are huge and the entire meal is more than enough for leftovers. We usually split a small Greek salad which is affordable and hearty. I LOVE that the salad has some homemade potato salad at the bottom. It's unusual but really brings the salad to life. I've also tried most of their desserts. My favorite is the homemade chocolate cake!! Athena's is at the top of my favorite lunch (and sometimes dinner) spots in the area. It has an authentic Greek feel and a family vibe. The owner is always working in the kitchen when we go and you can tell he really cares about his food and customers. There's currently a 10% surcharge on all chicken dishes due to inflation. But it's absolutely worth it knowing that it's helping this amazing small business continue to do what they do best.
