I was so pleased to see that Athens was still open! My husband & I would drive 30-40 minutes just to eat at this restaurant. The last time we tried eating there we took the drive to find out they had closed but they hadn't! They moved! Not as fancy as the old location but the food was still amazing!! I was SOOO excited for Athens to re-open after their move, as I live close by and Greek is one of my favorite cuisines. The ambiance is nothing special, and staff seems kind of tired every time I have been to dine in or take out. The gyros are good, decently priced, and size is fair. It wasn't the best gyro I've ever had but did the job. Also had the salad, which was incredibly underwhelming. I expected a lot of tomatoes and feta, and this was lacking. On a delivery that I waited and 20 minutes in they canceled at 6:43 saying that could not do the meal that was actually Italian and said that they would not be able to do it without even offering a substitute. They're taking all the COVID19 precautions, face masks etc. They're also using all disposable plastic ware - plates, serving dishes etc. which I can only assume is also because of COVID19. The food took about 45 minutes to come out and the servers (all women) were some surly, mean spirited gals-clearly overwhelmed-but not even remotely trying to be friendly to customers. Our server took our drink order by yelling across the order instead of coming to our table and taking it. We needed one to go order as well but I asked her to put that on a separate check so our companions wouldn't have to pay for it. Her response was "we'll cross that bridge when we have to". I went to Athens for lunch with a group of friends (4 ladies total). I'm a big fan of Greek food and they seemed to have a pretty good menu, so I was excited to try it. After it was suggested, I checked it out on Yelp but I still went with an open mind. FIrst, if you want a quick lunch, this is not the place. Our lunch took quite a long time- well over an hour. It seemed like it took awhile to get our orders, bread, salads, entrees, and checks. Our server didn't really come back to check on us either. The restaurant was steady but not crowded. Maybe they were short staffed in the kitchen, or maybe it just takes this long, but none of us had a special order. It took awhile for us to get our checks, which was frustrating since I had to go back to work. Along with the service, I also found the food disappointing. I had the vegetarian lasagna which came with a side salad and we had a basket of bread for the table. The bread was okay, but the olive oil for dipping was good. The salad only had one olive, one tomato, one cucumber, but it had enough feta cheese. For a side salad, I did not expect a meal, but I really could have used a few more olives and tomatoes. The lettuce was romaine, at least, and not iceburg. My entree, the vegetarian lasagna, was quite deceiving. It came out and looked like a good meal, but the actual portion of lasagna (cheese/pasta/vegetables) was smaller than a Stouffer's entree. The bowl was mostly marinara sauce and melted cheese. The lasagna was fine, but I could have used a bit more. It was only a few bites. After eating it, I was left with a lot of marinara sauce. My friends' portions were not that big either. One friend had the salmon salad and the piece of salmon was quite small, and the salad lacked a lot of toppings. Another friend had the gyro platter which looked a bit bland. I can think of better places to get Greek food in Charleston and better places for Italian foods like lasagna. It's frustrating to pay $11.95 for an entree for lunch and leave wanting more food. read more

The Calamari was delicious.... but the gyro platter..... ehhhhh. I wish I would've gotten more calamari instead. Maybe I just have high expectations, but I'm used to having more flavor in a gyro, thinly sliced and a little bit more in portions. The potatoes could've used some more flavor too. I love that you had delivery, but I'm not sure about ordering a gyro from here again. I think I'm going to try a few other locations to see how they compare. read more

We love Greek food. The pork Soulvaki was good but the platter only included sour potatoes. We had to pay separate for tzatziki sauce, greek salad(did not have feta but a mild white shreds) and no pita bread. Our grand daughter would not eat the spaghetti because it had cinnamon in the recipe. The 3 adults and one child dinner cost $131.00. Our waitress was friendly but the food was mediocre. We miss our favorite greek restaurant Olympic Deli (off of Savannah Hwy) We have been going to for over 30 years. The owner Ali sold to a Sweet Muslim Man but he does not serve Pork Souvlaki. I have been going to this restaurant for a long time. On Jan 5, 2024 I placed an order for delivery. I ordered there lemon chicken soup 2 of them and never got them. My favorite eggplant was slop it was not layered. And the Greek potatoes were burned uneatable. Very pissed and disappointed. I called the restaurant and one of the owners didn't want to talk so he took my phone number and never called me back. I guess they don't care what his workers are sending out of his restaurant or he doesn't care about his customers. Wish I could posted a picture of what I received. Never got the 2 lemon Chicken soups . I sent a picture of the eggplant to Uber and I can't find it to show you. I expect better service since eating out is a luxury these days. Athens dishes look like a bunch of frozen and pre-made stuff thrown on the plate. The potatoes have no flavor and little texture. There's no reason that gyro meat should have the same consistency as dog treats and food. A friend wanted to eat there today so I decided to give them another try. My family and I used to drive by this place, year after year, so we decided to give it a try for once! The interior is very pretty. One strange thing that we noticed when we walked in was the odd silence--there was no music playing in the background so it gave the dining area a weird hollow feeling. Our waiter was very friendly and professional. He was able to answer all of our questions about the traditional Greek dishes. Although the restaurant was packed, he was attentive at all times. The food was certainly the best part. I ordered the Chicken Kabob, and it was perfection. The portion, flavor, and presentation were all spot on. I love that they serve the meal with bread and olive oil, a favorite snack of mine. The Baklava we split for dessert was also marvelous! Parking was pretty easy, though I could see the parking lot getting full during a weekend rush time. When we first walked into Athens we were greeted immediately and quoted a ten minute wait. Just a minute later we were told a table was ready and walked into the dining room where there were several empty tables. Dorothy quickly greeted us and took our drink order, when she came back we placed our food order. The salads with the house dressing were perfect, though we were left hoping for more of the bread and oil, it is just plain olive oil with no seasonings to dip the bread into. This is one of the most legit Greek restaurants I've eaten at. It's not a fancy pants restaurant in decor though it's nice but it's made up for in the food. I just had the Calamari for the first time and it's as good as I've had anywhere including San Francisco. Tender and lightly breaded. I've had the all meat Greek pizza and it's really good, and I worked at a pizza joint as a kid, actually three of them. Gyros are what you expect. Most meals come with a big side salad and some delicious home baked bread yum. The Greek chicken on salad is really two meals for most folks. The Greek chicken is the only thing maybe worth ordering but it comes with a pile of very salty steak fries. The eggplant dish consists of a few pieces of eggplant on a pile of spaghetti. The spanakopita is practically devoid of spinach or cheese... just a stack of fried filo dough. The chicken souvlaki is made from the cheapest, toughest cut of meat. STeak kabob was chewy and tough and impossible to cut with a plastic very small knife. The veal.parm was delicious. The Greek chicken was good but potatoes were over done and lacked seasoning.
