    Rigatoni with Marinara

Tolli's Trattoria is an Italian restaurant that opened in Johns Island, South Carolina in September 2020. It was founded by husband and wife Anthony and Giuseppina Peluso. The roots of the restaurant go back to New Haven, Connecticut in the 1930s. In 1934, Antonio "Tony" Tolli opened his first New Haven-style pizzeria. He would go on to open multiple pizzerias in the area in the coming decades. In 1954, he opened Tolli's Apizza [pronounced ah-BEETS] in neighboring East Haven. Tolli's nephew Carmine Peluso began working there a few years later and in 1963 he took over the business. Carmine sadly passed away in 1979 when he was shot and killed by a masked robber. His son Anthony later took over the pizzeria. Years later, Anthony remodeled it and added a restaurant wing dubbed 'La Pergula'. In 2020, Anthony and his wife grew tired of Connecticut weather and decided to relocate to the Charleston area. Tolli's Apizza was sold to longtime employee Klever Macao. Anthony and Giuseppina opened a new restaurant where they could bring their pizza and authentic Italian fare to a new clientele. My family and I visited Tolli's Trattoria this past summer while we were visiting family in town. Being native 'New Havenites', we were so happy to find authentic New Haven-style pizza in the Lowcountry. The menu consists of Italian entrees, pasta dishes, subs, salads, and various appetizers. However, we were just interested in getting pizza. We ordered and shared the "Mario" (caramelized red onion, goat cheese, pear slices, pistachio & honey, truffle oil drizzle) and the "Argentine" (white base, mozzarella, gulf shrimp, fresh garlic, fresh arugula, chopped tomatoes, shaved grana, lemon parmesan & EVOO). We also ordered a side of pasta with marinara for our younger son. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The pizzas were absolutely delicious![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]They were 10" personal pizzas and a little smaller than what we are normally used to.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We gobbled them up so quickly that we ordered a third: the "Calabrese" (fresh tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, Italian soppressata, honey, chili flakes, pecorino & hot cherry peppers). To drink, I ordered the "Black Manhattan" (Knob Creek Rye, Averna Amaro, walnut bitters, orange zest). It was real smooth and washed down well. [[HIGHLIGHT]]For dessert, we all shared some "Lemon Sorbet" and some "Vanilla Gelato".[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We all had a memorable lunch at Tolli's Trattoria and will definitely stop again on our next visit to Charleston!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The food is incredible at Tolli's![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We ordered Arancini balls, cheesy garlic bread, and the cauliflower hush puppies for an appetizer- and all three items did not disappoint!![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was great as well. We were sat quickly and Josh took great care of us. 10/10 would recommend

I have eaten at Tolli's four times now with mixed experiences. From these visits, I've learned to stay away from pasta and stick to the pizzas. While the pasta dishes are tasty, they are tiny and priced pretty high. The butternut squash pasta was $28 and had 5-6 pieces of thin ravioli with a few pieces of squash. They could have added more veggies for filler, I was still hungry after eating this. I had the same experience with the gnocchi as well. The pizzas are also a bit small, my 3 year old finished an entire pizza by himself and he rarely finishes a meal. The crust is really thin, and toppings are light, so it truly isn't filling. I've added the arancini to pizza orders so we can feel a bit more full. All in all, the food tastes great, but you need to order a lot of it to leave not hungry.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Being from New England, my GF and I have had New Haven style pizza numerous times. Hate to be a downer, but Tolli's was not even close.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Good pizza that does not stand out above others we have tried in the area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Sadly, we won't be back.

Drinks were ok! Wish the service and prices were a bit better. Love to support CT transplants like myself. Would try the pizza again. This place is tiny, so you feel a bit cramped.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Solid 3.5/10 for $25 definitely not worth it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Absolutely no cheese or flavor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] If you're reading this go to "The Natural" for pizza....

We called on a Saturday evening hoping to accommodate a party of 30 later that night, and they welcomed us with less than 45 minutes' notice. We were beyond grateful for their hospitality. The entire staff was exceptional. Multiple servers worked together seamlessly, and even one of the owners jumped in to help serve drinks, appetizers, and entrées. Despite the size of our group, everything came out promptly, and every dish was absolutely delicious. My husband ordered the Pork Osso Buco and loved every bite. We shared the calamari (not pictured), which was fantastic - especially dipped in their homemade marinara. I ordered the Spaghetti Pomodoro with added sausage, and it was a generous portion that was full of flavor. From the outstanding service and delicious food to the great music and cozy, low-lit atmosphere, this is a wonderful spot for a date night or a special dinner with friends and family. We truly couldn't have asked for a better experience, and we'll absolutely be back!

I have debated posting a review, and Yelp has requested a review a few times so here we go...will I ever eat at Ciao Bella again? NOPE. When I asked our waitress to suggest a dish that had marinara sauce and if the Fruit Del Mara could be served with marinara, she said "the dish is served with marinara cause they put those little tomatoes in the pasta." Did she think I asked about a different item on the menu?? The food was pretty good, but not one ounce of marinara sauce was included. The bread and oil/herbs/spices they served was one of the best I have ever had. So why 2 stars? #1 Waitress obviously didn't know anything about the food the restaurant she works(ed?) for served and/or just BS'ed me. #2 The seating arrangement sucks unless you enjoy having people you don't know sitting less than one foot from you on one side, and the other side the table is turned so it faces your table, so that the couple sitting there are facing you (our experience-apparently the female had a fear of abandonment as she sat next to her date instead of across from him - maybe this is the normal thing for some...) it was uncomfortable having the couple on our right side sitting less than five foot away, both facing us, just weird, but that's still not the reason for 2 stars. #3 Asked our *lovely* waitress for boxes and if we could take the bread and oil/herb dip we had left over too, which would require a to-go small bowel etc. "Of course! I will be right back!" Next thing I know, some dude was snatching up our plates, came back and slung the to-go boxes on the table. Not our appetizer, "Crispy Calamari", though, or the bread and oil, so I asked him can we please have a box for our appetizer and bread/oil? What an attitude this joker had! Didn't say a word and again grabbed the plate with the calamari with an attitude, came back and again slung the to-go box on the table. No bread/oil, even though we had some left over, maybe he didn't hear me? Oh he heard me but was apparently having a crappy day- and where was the waitress that was all sweet and said she would bring us boxes etc, - she was behind the bar, laughing and having a grand time with the customers. The food was good, not great; however, the bread/oil was so good we would have returned to try other items on their menu - but with the seating arrangements, confused or BS'ing waitress, and angry box-slinging miserable guy working there, we will have to pass...
