We had such a fun date night at Stella's downtown. I made us a reservation for a Saturday night at the bar, which we really enjoyed. We were surprised when we walked in and the bar was actually low, with low, spinny bar seats. But it actually was pretty unique and fun! Our server was excellent and gave us great recommendations. We started with the Stella's Kalamari that had sun-dried tomatoes, capers, and artichoke hearts. It was very flavorful and delicious. Something to keep in mind here is that the portions are pretty large. Perfect for splitting dishes and a lot of food for your buck. The stand out dish for me was the spanakopita. It's a flaky, crispy pastry with spinach and feta inside that you dip in tzatziki. What's not to love about all of that?? We splurged a bit on our entree and split the braised lamb shank. The lamb itself was pretty good, but what I enjoyed most was the pasta it comes with. I would maybe suggest trying a different entree. It wasn't my favorite, but it was good. For drinks I got the Cretan, which had cucumber infused gin, lime, rosemary and thyme. It was so refreshing and just what I wanted. My husband made my birthday dreams come true by reserving a table at Stella's. We are from Richmond, VA and are avid fans of the original location. Having one here is amazing. We started off with cocktails and ordered the octopus and mushroom saganaki to start. Both dishes were flavorful and tasty. I ordered the pikilia platter for my entree. Everything was good but the souvlaki was too heavy on the salt. My husband was going to get a steak. Our server, Katrina, told him that there was no steak special that evening but the chef had a pork chop taking its place as a nightly feature. He thought the description sounded good so he ordered it. He was very happy with his meal. When the bill came, he said "good thing I liked that pork chop. It was $50!" In the restaurants defense, he should have asked for the price before he ordered. We just never in our wildest dreams imagined a pork chop entree would come out to $50. Overall, we enjoyed our meal. It isn't really fair to compare this to the Richmond location. In all honesty, if this was my first Stella's meal and I had nothing to compare it to it would be an easy 5 stars. Only thing I wish could have been different are the seats. They're fixed to the floor & the spacing is far - good for strangers, but not when it's date night. STELLA! This was our first time at Stella's and to be honest I was a bit skeptical when our friends made the reservation. Greek food can be hit and miss outside of Greece but Stella does it wonders. I love Mediterranean food and having spent time in Greece I have high expectations. The inside is super cute and decorated for the holidays which is always a plus. The seats could use an upgrade but honestly that is a small flaw. The service was excellent, Carly our server was on top of food allergy orders, refilling drinks and clearing out plates. The food and drinks were outstanding, I had the branzino crispy skin and cooked to perfection, the favorite drink of the night was the Mykonos, YUM! I grew up in Richmond and lived around the corner from where the original Stella's is located so coming here tasted like home. The space is warm and they have a quaint outdoor area as well. I loved the community table vibes too. Our server was lovely as well. We got the flaming cheese, shrimp with fava bean purée and spanakopita to start. All amazing. The fava bean purée was denser than what I'm used to in Richmond but otherwise everything was equally as delicious. Hubby and I along with his brother and our sister-in-law dined at Stella's on a Saturday evening while visiting Charleston. We walked over from our hotel and were told the wait would be 1.5 hours without reservations. That didn't make any sense since no other groups were waiting on tables. We decided to hang out and see if a table opened up sooner and one did. We only waited about 20 minutes. Once seated, our server came right over and took our drink and appetizer order. She was very nice, attentive, and quite friendly. Hubby and I shared the spanakopita with tzatziki. I really liked the filling and the tzatziki but the phyllo was dry and overcooked. The flavors were there, however, the execution wasn't great. I was also left wanting more tzatziki which would have helped with the dry phyllo. For our entree, we shared the pastichio. Again, I thought the flavors were there but it was dry and overcooked. The ground beef was seasoned well and there was a nice cheesy flavor. I felt there should have been more béchamel or sauciness from the meat sauce. Overall, trendy and alluring spot, unique menu, flavorful food, and great service. I was visiting Charleston with my mom and sister for a short weekend trip. My mom and I have been dying to come back to Stella's ever since our phenomenal dinner here a couple years ago. We got a reservation for 3 for a Saturday night. I would highly recommend getting a reservation here, especially for dinner. The restaurant itself isn't huge, but I absolutely love the quant, rustic vibe of it! The interior has a chic, Mediterranean feel about it. We sat at the bar seats, which was perfect. The service here is excellent, we even had the same waitress from out first visit! They staff does a great job keeping the restaurant running efficiently and making sure guests our satisfied. Our server did a great job guiding us through the menu and suggesting drinks to pair with our entrees. They do offer bread service with freshly poured Greek olive oil, this was lovely. For our food, we started with their famous flaming Saganaki cheese. It is kefalograviera cheese that is quite literally served on fire with lemon and grilled pita. This was certainly a presentation and we dug in as soon as the flame went out! The cheese itself has a really unique, deep flavor. The lemon enhances the sharpness of the cheese and pita pairs perfectly with it. While this was good, I was slightly disappointed with the consistency of the cheese. It wasn't "melty" at all and rather more solid than I had hoped. While it was good, I think we would have rather ordered their spanakopita (it is to die for). For our entrees, my sister and I ordered the Pastichio, while my mom ordered the moussaka. The Pastichio reminded me of a lasagna dish. The noodles were nice and thick and the aromatic meat was so good! The béchamel made the dish so unique and paired magically with the flavorful meat. This dish is not a light one for sure, but it was really great! My mom enjoyed her Moussaka, but noted it wasn't as memorable as the first time she had it. She still really enjoyed though! All our food was very good, I would definitely recommend the Moussaka over any entree. It is a must and it is just so good! Overall, we had a great meal here. Starting with the bread service and the high quality olive oil is a must. We had to try the flaming cheese, was good, but I think I would have rather gotten their spanakopita again! Our entrees were huge portions, with so much flavor. The Pastichio 21 was a nice dish, the noodles were tasty and the meat was quite yummy. But, I think I like the Moussaka more here. The ambiance is laid back with a huge bar/counter inside and a lovely covered porch next to an extended outside patio. Our server was friendly, timely and nice. We ordered Moussaka, Yia Yia Fried Potatoes, Kotopoulo, Spanakopita and for dessert we ordered Ekmek. The meal was delicious as I decided to order out of my confort zone, since I usually order lamb. The staff recommended me a traditional Greek meal; Moussaka and I did. I was happy I did and I really loved it!! Moussaka is a classic Greek dish, a layered casserole typically featuring eggplant, potatoes, a savory meat sauce (often ground beef or lamb), and a creamy béchamel sauce topping. We didn't have a reservation, but they still managed to seat us within about fifteen minutes, which was such a pleasant surprise. The food was unbelievably good. I ordered the roasted chicken and it did not disappoint. It was juicy, flavorful, and truly memorable. The service was equally impressive, attentive without ever feeling rushed. I've been visiting Charleston for years and somehow never knew about this place, and now I understand why the locals like to keep it a secret. It is definitely a staple. Was supposed to go to the reggae festival but with the weather not supporting it we opted for Stella's. The Intial impression, staff was amazing it's a nice intimate place we did make a reservation but unfortunately our table isn't ready 20 minutes post reservation we showed up about 10 minutes prior to our reservation so it took a while to get seated. For an Advertiser we ordered the zucchini fritters it was a unique appetizer nice texture little too soft and middle for me but my wife loved it the tzatziki sauce gave a good flavor I would give it a three out of five the complimentary bread and oil and reasonable flavor the bread was a little thick but it was reasonable the three out of five the number five pasta was a very large dish is what I ordered it came with the spoon little difficult to mix it in The Taste wasn't over the moon I did take the pasta to go but I think the amount of feta that came with it didn't agree with my stomach overall if this is the type of food that you like you should get the restaurant and try to see if they have what you're looking for unfortunately at the time to which we left some of the staff members were having Choice conversations behind the bar area which included a lot of less than Pleasant jokes about some religious cultures and a lot of profanity so that definitely turned the night rather awkward. Wow. This is the restaurant to remember. The ambiance is warm and inviting there with a classy touch. The service was so attentive even if they got so busy by 7 - 8 pm. Even if it was a mondag night. The food was absolutely outstanding. It's one of the best Greek restaurants I have ever visited, and I have been at many of them in different states. The flavors were just so tasteful. Octopus is such a challenging dish, so I'm always cautious and curious when I see it on a menu. Stella's is one of those places that has mastered it. You get bread and olive oil for your table (which, who doesn't love). Even the plain olive oil was so rich! We ordered a couple apps for the table - a sheep/goat cheese dish that came on fire (very cool) and zucchini fritters (yumm!). It came with 4 pretty big fritters and tzatziki. It was really good. From the moment you walk in you know you're in for a treat when you get to Stella's. Whether you sit at the bar or one of the spacious, comfy 2- or 4-tops, the seating and inviting ambiance make you want to spend more time there than merely what is required to eat a meal. Annie was our server and was very attentive without being pushy or in our face. She recommended a few items and we chose to get several plates to share off the appetizer menu. While it was all delicious, the one that stood out the most was the grilled octopus. Light, fresh, NOT rubbery, a perfect addition to the night. We ended with Greek espresso. After the walk back to our hotel, my wife and I have both said repeatedly out loud how good the meal was and how good we feel after eating there, which is rare these days when so much food is garbage, too large a portion, or just isn't prepared correctly. I came in alone and got seated at this bar like area but it wasn't a bar with alcohol it was a bar for parties of 1-2 people. The original is in our hometown of Richmond, VA - so I was a little hesitant to try it in Charleston because ours is so AMAZING. But so is this ONE! We took our adult children who live in Charleston and they both said it's one of the best restaurants in town! We started with: Dolmads - honestly Stella's does it the best - both Richmond and Charleston - if you are a fan - get these, close your eyes and you're in Greece! Grilled Octopus - perfectly done and not at all chewy as some restaurants mess it up. It was one of my favorites here. Lamb Frites - heavier and not in a bad way - but we got so many appetizers, we couldn't finish these - but amazing lamb flavor. Tria - the homemade Pita dipped in all of these amazing dips is something I could eat every, single, day. The olive oil is grassy and fruity and if they have it in stock - buy it (they didn't when I was there - but I buy it in Richmond). Entrees - My son had the braised lamb shank - it was tender, lamby and had an amazing depth of flavor. My daughter had the shrimp ouzo and raved about it. I had the scallops that were on special and they were buttery and perfect over a succatash. LOVED IT. I can't remember what my husband had (we ate SO MUCH FOOD). The service was impeccable and the location and atmosphere is great - I love that part of Charleston.
