This was about five years ago but I just found the receipt I kept from these guys and had flashbacks from what was one of the most horrific moving experiences I could have ever imagined. Very long story short: they showed up several hours late, said they were too tired to move (we had to move that day), demanded all the money upfront plus more, refused to unload the truck at the new destination and watched me do it then took off. Moving is a very stressful experience. Add 5 tests on top of that and I was growing white hairs at an alarming rate. I knew that I wanted to hire professionals to handle my move and my friend recommended Athletic Movers. Initially the communication between myself and Rudy was a little difficult due to language barriers but he was pleasant and efficient. He faxed over the Certificate of Insurance on time and quoted me $90/hr for 3 men and a truck. They have a minimum of 3 hours. On the day of the move I was greeted warmly by Alan and his two men. Alan was very easy going and joked a lot. He always had a smile on his face which is pretty rare in NYC. The three of them managed to move our 2 bedroom apartment into their truck in under 45 minutes. I stood there in shock at how fast they moved. They wrapped up my mahogany dresser, 2 mattresses, and even a glass table in that short amount of time! My roommate and I probably had 25 cardboard boxes too. They even arrived at our new place before we did. The painful job of moving was done in the 3 hour time frame and we were happily settled in. Thank you so much for doing such a great job! Pros were: - Perfectly on time, waiting at my truck, ready to go before I walked out. - Let you sign the time on the forms to make sure you can track it yourself. - They told me to stop trying to move stuff because they wanted to do it themselves. - I think they took previous customers suggestions because they smelled like roses while moving stuff around, it was awesome. - Very kind demeanor and professional. Cons were: - They bumped into a few walls more than a couple of times. This is the fifth time I've used these guys, both for business and for personal moves. Rudy is no nonsense and very fair with pricing. Russell is a pro at keeping the team moving. Two times they were able to move/walk a grand piano without incident on six flights of stairs so obviously they know what they're doing. They were always on time and careful with my possessions. Make mention of something with greater importance and they will treat it as such. I don't know what else to say except I'm keeping their card on file and recommend them to friends without hesitation. This is the worst experience I have ever had!!! I chose them based on the good reviews and also last minute moving. Bad service and the manager Rudy refused to communicate afterwards. 1. Very inefficient moving. For a 1br apt moving with both move in and move out elevators and only less than 2 miles distance, it took 3 men 8 hours to finished. During the move, I barely see two of them. They were constantly texting and talking on the phone and I got no surprise one guy then asked us to charge his phone. 2. Overcharged for half an hour. Towards the end of the moving, the movers wanted to charge us both ways as travel time (aka, changed from 0.5hr to 1hr) where the original quote gave us half an hour discount. We even called the manager but his guy called his own manager bullshit (his original words) and added the additional 0.5hr as moving time and refused to reassemble our furnitures before changing this. 3. Threatened for more than 25% tips after which he finally reluctantly reassembled our furnitures. 4. One broken vase, one broken lamp and several scratches on my office table. After negotiating for two weeks, Rudy claimed that insurance company will only refund for $9. Is that a joke??!! 5. Closed to moving out of our original building almost had a quarrel with movers hired by another unit. Due to the inefficiency, the move were gone out of my scheduled time for service elevator (9am-1pm). There's another moving company who booked after 1PM. My building manager helped us not getting into any trouble. 6. We spent 2wks trying to negotiate with Rudy but only received delayed response and ridiculous refund estimate and later on little or no communication at all. DO NOT use them!!! read more

I had used Athletic Movers 5 or 6 times previously and recommended them to close friends and family and we were all extremely satisfied with their professionalism, pricing and results. However that was not true of my most recent experience. My daughter was relocating from NYC to Chicago and I called Rudy for a long distance moving recommendation. He informed me that Athletic Movers does long distance moves and he promptly sent me an estimate which true to form was very fair. As the date got closer Rudy and I arranged a specific date for delivery even though the estimate, not the contract, does not guarantee the delivery date on long distance moves. I called Rudy 3 days before the 11/26 move out of the NYC apt. , (we had arranged to use the free storage offered on long distance moves and deliver 10 days later) to confirm the date and after checking with the driver he told me it would not happen as planned... We obviously were upset and at great expense had to cancel and change plane tickets and find new hotel rooms. Rudy assured us that the driver was very reliable and that the move would be completed in the next 4 days. We re-booked everything and flew out on a saturday taking Rudy at his word that the move would be completed that sunday thru tuesday at the latest. What followed was a daily dialogue starting each afternoon with a cancellation for the following day and and an assurance that it would be the next day. The excuses were first blamed on the weather, (there was some snow) and then a broken truck. It actually took 10 days from friday 12/6 the original delivery date to sunday 12/15 to receive our belongings. I spoke with Rudy each day and after a few days pleaded with him to get another truck or driver but it never happened. He then revealed to me that Athletic Movers does not handle the long distance component of the move but contracts it out-however my only contract was with Athletic movers. In addition we had to pay the balance in full in cash before they would unload the truck! I feel we were mislead and mistreated and that Rudy and Athletic movers should have intervened and found someone to deliver sooner or compensated us for our 10 days of hotel bills and anguish. My wife called and scheduled a move with Rudy. On the day of our move, which was originally scheduled at 9am, no one showed up. Around 10am, 11am or noon, my wife called. Rudy advised that her that because she never "confirmed" that we were not set for that date anymore. To this day, we have never saw where it told us to confirm. I had even received an e-mail telling me the date and time of our originally scheduled move. Following this, Rudy scheduled the guys to come at 1pm, after they finished another job. At about 2pm or 3pm, my wife called several times. Each time, Rudy told her to wait because "the guys are doing another move somewhere in NJ and they are stuck in traffic." After a couple of calls, Rudy hung up on her. So I called. I calmly explained the situation. And before I know it, Rudy hangs up on me too. Finally, the men arrive. They pack everything fairly efficiently. When they arrive at our new apartment, one of the men asks to be paid a significant sum that was three times the price originally quoted. I refuse, and the man threatens to steal all of our belongings and "lock them up until we pay". Finally, we gave in, not wanting the day to become even more stressful than it already was. The men, having already moved for one job, were sluggish, which cost us even more money for the additional time taken. I ended up moving a vast portion of the boxes from their truck myself. Please find someone else. It's not worth it. Pay the extra amount and go with someone with a flat rate. These guys will cost the same anyway. read more

I've dealt with moving companies multiple times the past few years and this was by far the worst experience I've had. The move took twice as long as what I was quoted...might have had something to do with the fact that the movers carried furniture in and out of the house while they were on their cell phones. When the move was complete (at twice the cost), I gave the 3 person crew an extra $100. The supervisor looked at it, chuckled, and said "That's it, you can't do anything more?". The icing on the cake happened a week later. My fiancee and I had unpacked most of the house and finally got to a 42 inch flat screen that they had packed with a box we purchased from them. When we took the TV out of the box, the entire screen was shattered. When we contacted the moving company, their first response was "you moved a week ago, you let us know too late". After some back and forth, we had to 'settle' for $.30 a pound damage, leaving us a crappy $15 for a $500 TV. read more

We used them in June after a friend recommended them, and the process was great- like night and day compared to our prior move. They charge by the hour instead of based on the amount of stuff, which worried me at first, but all 3 guys worked hard and efficiently the whole time and the price ended up being what we expected. We did buy the insurance for two expensive items, but they were careful with everything, and there were no damages at all except for a couple dents in our metal trash can. They are pros at disassembling and reassembling furniture too (did a 4 poster bed and a crib in no time). Would definitely use them again. This is my second big move in NYC, so I had some expectations. I knew this shouldn't take more than 2 hours, and it didn't, which I was pleased about. I wasn't sure if I could trust this moving company because I couldn't find a lot of user reviews, so let me give you a thorough and honest breakdown so you can make an informed decision on your big move: Cost: $99/ hour with 3 guys, with a 3 hour minimum. I didn't go over 3 hours, but if you do they said it was still $99 for each additional hour. (Some places it gets more expensive for additional hours). Anyway this is the best deal you're going to get, seriously. I got price estimates from about ten places and no one could touch this estimate. What I liked: - The guys were punctual. They showed up on time and the time didn't "start" until I signed the form and wrote down the start time myself. - The guys were pretty professional/ likable. Two of their names were: Jamik and Nikita - They were Russian I think, very polite, not creepy in any way, which is good for a young woman moving. - They moved everything carefully and nothing was broken or scratched!! Always a great thing! - They never pressured me about the tip at the end, which I appreciated! During my last move, the guy was really intense about it and pressured me to tip a lot, it was kind of stressful. But these guys didn't say anything and I tipped nicely anyway. - At the end he offered to let me look in the truck to ensure everything had been unloaded, which I REALLY liked that he said it was "standard procedure." Because how lame does it sound to say "hey, do you mind if I look in the truck..." (basically to see if you have stolen any of my stuff lol) But no, he offered, there was no awkward moment there. What I didn't like: - The main guy sort of joked at the beginning that my neighborhood looked dangerous... and I was like really? You're starting this off by insulting my BK hood? But it was light hearted, I guess, and he was very pleasant the rest of the time. But not a great first impression! - One of the guys was shirtless, and let's be honest, he got sweat marks on some of the boxes = gross. He was also not wearing deodorant, and the scent lingered for a good 10 minutes after they left. I really could have done without that... but I guess that's why the price is lower than other places lol... But seriously, stock up on the deodorant and reapply before each job! What to watch out for as a consumer: - When you get your estimate, make sure you specifically ask ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL COSTS FOR TRANSPORTATION? This is a scam, I've realized, that I am SO ashamed to admit I fell for during my first move. This is basically when the guy at the office gives you one estimate, then the moving guy says "didn't they tell you about the transportation cost?" What they're referring to is the cost to move from one state to another, not from boroughs. But if you're not careful, you could add another $80 unknowingly! In this case, I said "No, I spoke with Rudy and he specifically said there were no transportation costs, and it was $300 flat for the 3 hours." And the guy said "oh ok, then $300 flat." So yeah, it's a bit scammy in that respect. But hey, if you're armed with the information, then you can still get the low cost and protect yourself from any of those "additional costs" that magically crop up. But that's what you'll get with any of these low cost/ family moving places. But if you're armed with the info and you're not afraid to speak up, you'll be just fine. SO overall, my moving EXPERIENCE was a 5/5 stars! But they lose a star for the slightly scammy quality and the body odor issues. But like I said, if you're smart and don't get intimidated, it's the best deal in town, they're reliable, they work hard, and they get it done quickly and carefully. read more

A friend of mine used these guys to move from her brownstone in Brooklyn Heights to her new loft in DUMBO (Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass), Brooklyn. I was helping out with the move and from what we experienced, these guys offer really great service with really courteous employees for some of the cheapest prices you could imagine in the area. Before making the decision to use Athletic Movers I looked at other movers and their Yelp reviews and decided on Athletic Movers despite one not so good review (I'm convinced this guy would be impossible to please no matter what!) and decided we'd use them. What an incredibly wonderful surprise! They were warm and friendly, professional, worked very fast and were amazingly thorough. Almost everything was either shrink wrapped or covered with mats - not a scratch to be discovered for the entire move. By the time we got to lunch time, I realized that Luis and his guys (Omar and Emerson) had even taken one break to that point. After about a fifteen minute lunch these guys were back at it again and continued to work at a quick pace all the way to the finish at 8:00 that night!! I'm not often stunned by a good work product, but this one was great (and nice guys on top of it!) experience provided by true pros. Sheesh, if you're not using these guys you're crazy! I have used Athletic Movers 3 times and the experience has been marginally terrible each time but this time I was really blown away. After corresponding with "Alan Persi" who responded to my online inquiry at their website, I set a moving date and time. On the moving date, the movers advised that they were backed up from the night before and would not be arriving until 1p. Why they were bumping my 9a appointment instead of the 11a appointment I have no idea. Then when I tried to call and complain to athletic movers, they had no idea who i was. "Alan" is a sales guy and had farmed out my job to Columbia movers and Athletic Movers had no idea who I was. Athletic Movers took no responsibility for the fact that Alan is completely unreliable and were completely unapologetic like he had nothing to do with them even though HE RESPONDED TO MY INQUIRY FROM THEIR WEBSITE. (after massive delays, Alan stopped responding to my emails and became completely unreachable.) the movers finally showed up at 5PM and threatened not to move us unless we paid 3x's more than what we had originally contracted for. Rudy and his guys moved me and my friends and my office man times. They never broke anything, they wrap furniture better than any company I've ever seen. They work hard and steadily, unlike other companies I've tried. Recently they broke tradition and moved me all the way out to Iowa, did it in record time, took apart and put together furniture like pros. They are sometimes early, sometimes on time and sometimes a little late, but never frustratingly late. Sometimes it takes them longer than they estimate, but not because they aren't working steadily--rather because an elevator is small or a piece of furniture is a problem. this was terrible experience it took them 3 hours to assemble a dining table .They do not even have electric screw driver this like 19 century.The wholemoving took 11 hours (wall unit and 3 pieces of kids furniture).Yesterday I have chinese people assembling big wardrobe for me it took them 20 minutes.
