I looked at various moving companies, and settled on Sweet Lou Moves You because they (1) had very good reviews; (2) used vans to move stuff; and (3) offered afternoon times slots in addition to mornings. I am extremely happy that I chose them after my move yesterday (I cleared up a storage that started to cost $500 per month). The reviews that I read previously turned up to be right: they are super in communications (plain, honest, down to earth, and a bit of nice humor), punctual, and careful. I liked that they use vans because I did not need to reserve space on our street for a large truck (saved me paying $200 to municipality). The choice of a time slot helped me organize the move and prep my apartment. And... their quote was 20% cheaper than other moving companies. I think that their business plan is to be plain and simple good, which in turn attracts more customers, which in turn makes up for their cheap price. Never received any callback (it's been 3 weeks). I messaged them on yelp multiple times. I called them twice and it went to voice mail. So they just wasted my time. I had to make other moving plans because these guys just completely ignored me. Edit: nothing better than a disgruntled response blaming me for non-responsiveness. But hey, I finally reached you! I moved from one Upper West Side apartment to a much bigger Upper West Side apartment 14 blocks up with this company in December. Both doorman/elevator buildings. It's taken me a while to write this review, but I'd feel irresponsible if I didn't. The short is: I didn't have a good experience, and don't recommend them at all. I've moved 5 times since I moved to NYC, including one interstate when I left during COVID and came back at the end of it. This is the worst experience I've had so far. I have a wide social network of friends who move often and have told them all the same. I filled out the online form and stressed it was only an estimate, I requested someone call me to discuss the move but they only ever communicated with me via email. I called several times and never got called back. They day came and they arrived on time and sent 3 guys, as promised. Two movers and one manager/driver. The driver I only saw briefly at the start and end and he was by far the most professional. I mostly dealt with Robbie and Grady. I welcomed them with a smile and a "good morning" and got sullen faces in return which sort of set the tone. Robbie was decent. Grady was horrible and has one of the worst attitudes of any service professional I've ever hired. I'm still annoyed I had to give him a decent tip to avoid stiffing the other two (it's split 3 ways evenly no matter what. Not a great system.) Grady was rude from the start. Clearly didn't want to be there. Nagged me about using re-usable bags to pack instead of boxes. Ok, if you only move things packed in boxes, PUT IT ON YOUR WEBSITE and I would have gladly done it. The two of them collectively whined about it enough to where you should specify that if it's such a big issue, no one has ever complained before. I also told Grady when he sarcastically said "you know who said there was less stuff here right" that I tried to call to discuss several times because the form says ESTIMATE and nobody answered the phone and he asked who I called, to which I responded the number on the website. I had some unsorted belongings on a table (that wasn't being moved) and he just threw them on the ground to move it out of the way, even though I told him I'd take care of it and move it aside. I saw him dragging one of the bags carelessly on the ground by one strap, my boyfriend had to go out and ask him to stop as it contained a bubble wrapped 1500 dollar espresso machine. They also refused to move my 600 dollar LitterRobot. I offered to empty it, wipe it down with Lysol, wrap it and put it in a box, and they still refused because "we don't do litter boxes". Obviously, nobody is asking you to take a full, dirty box. Empty, clean, wrapped in bubble wrap in a box...it's just furniture. It's a 600 dollar piece of machinery that I had to haul into the back of an Uber myself, which took an extra 20 minutes, which of course they then complained they had to wait an extra 10 minutes for me to arrive at my new apartment. Well...that's what you left me with. Again, never happened before with other movers. Also, and this is one of the bigger issues: I overheard Robbie and Grady gossiping about us not once but twice. The first time, they commented on the tone I used with my boyfriend (we've been together 5+ years and he knows what I'm like when I've been up for 5 days straight packing and didn't take offense to it...golly). "Let a woman talk to him like that" says Grady. The second time, he questioned his partner about why my boyfriend was wearing a mask. "Is he sick?" No, he's immunocompromised and doesn't want to GET sick. It also happens to be none of your business. Robbie: you seem like a decent guy but maybe save the hot gossip about paying customers for the van. I did appreciate your pleasant demeanor and you helping me break down and dispose of my old bed frame. Would've been a huge pain to do myself. Grady: you're an unprofessional stoner who shouldn't be hired to scrape gum off a city sidewalk. And yes, I'm talking to you like that. The two stars is because they didn't break anything and that's about it. I've been shocked to read reviews about friendly, personable service as that was the polar opposite of my experience. I love these guys! I used them for a move a long time ago (maybe 2015?) and then again in June 2024. They were super accommodating when my move was much larger than I originally anticipated (I ended up taking a lot more furniture than I thought I would to my new apartment) and I was not as prepared as I had intended to be due to a death in the family right before the move. Sweet Lou is the best moving company in all of New York. I've moved 7 times in the last 7 years, so I have an awful lot of experience, and can honestly say that these guys know what they're doing. I've moved with Lou twice now - the first time just some items which they handled lovingly and quick, and the second time my entire apartment. Deciding for a moving company is so hard because everyone is trying to scam you and screw you over and gives you stupid quotes that end up being wrong - not with Lou. You fill in the form with all your info, you get a quote, you know exactly what you're getting. WHICH IS A DELIGHT. Lou and Shelley are INSANELY great at communicating - they answer all your questions in advance and keep you super updated until the actual moving day arises. Lou's crew is utterly delightful as well - I would trust them with my firstborn (I mean, I don't have one, so maybe that would change my mind, and I'm certain Lou's boys have better things to do than babysit.. but I digress). I was zero worried about my stuff, because I KNOW that these guys handle everything with care, are masters in Tetris-ing it into their cute van, work super fast and efficient, all while being ABSOLUTELY COOL (and hot. OMG). It really helps having your movers having such a chill vibe about them, are absolutely hilarious and fun to be around, and just make sure that you don't worry a TINY bit. Moving sucks BUT having the Sweet Lou's crew made the process quick and pain free. For reference this move was for a 1 bedroom apt with some yard & garage items into a storage unit. I looked into 7 different moving companies at the beginning of the month, Sweet Lou's was one of easiest to communicate with. Super responsive, & they lay everything you need to know out for you (through email and on their website FAQs). You give them a list with photos of your inventory and in return they give you a clear and transparent quote. Affordable and no BS. (CONTACT THEM, YOU WON'T REGRET IT) We confirmed the day of our move & got our arrival window 9am-11am. We also got an email the night before confirming any last minute inventory changes and reminding us of what to expect day of. The crew gave us a 30 mins heads up before they arrived. We got three movers; Reggie, Will & Rey. They KILLED it. We were beyond impressed with the care they took in moving our stuff out into the sprinter van but also how quick, and efficient they were. They're also crazy strong, no joke there were heavy items they handled with such ease that had been a struggle for us. Their strength had us wondering what kind of green juice Sweet Lou is giving them. Bonus points for them wrapping up an ottoman I didn't wrap because I was done with packing and wrapping stuff lol. One of the movers took the time to wrap it without me asking before moving it into the van. I really appreciated it. I have to say, Lou knows his sh1t. I don't know how sweet he is, but he funny, thorough, and reliable. I booked with him after speaking with about 6 different moving companies. My move was simple... being a King size bed from someone's downstairs living room to the 2nd floor bedroom in my garden apartment. When Lou heard that he was taking this to a garden apartment, he asked me if I was sure that all of those pieces would fit through the bedroom door, given the odd angles and tight spaces that these little garden apartments are infamous for. He's obviously been around the block, and that the gigantic headboard might not fit never even occurred to me. I kept my fingers x'd, and lo and behold, the damn thing didn't fit. The movers (there were 3 of them) tried pretty hard to get it in, but gave up knowing it wouldn't work. To their credit, they called when they were enroute to the pick-up location, arrived on time, they were careful about carrying the parts along a path that had some ice/snow on it, next to some idiot's BMW, and didn't even respond to that jackass when he said "Be careful!" I think that the only thing that would have made them absolutely the perfect 5 star company is if the movers took the extra 15 or 20 minutes to see if they could help me figure out a way for this piece of furniture to fit in my room. Actually, that's not their job... that would have been above and beyond... but as it turns out, had we removed 3 screws from the back of this piece, or would have easily come apart and fit thru my door. But they're movers, with the "pick out up and put it down" mind of mentality, and were fairly young. I don't fault them for it, but I would encourage Lou (because I can easily tell he gives a damn about customer experience) to train his movers to ask if there is a furniture manual, check it out and see if it mentions anything about how to dismantle so that the piece fits into smaller spaces. It wouldn't be their place to do the dismantling, but it would have been a big help. And if a customer says tells Lou in advance that they're not sure if a piece will fit, he can suggest that they look at the manual as well. I didn't even know furniture companies have a crap about that at all. But all in all, very good experience. read more

I just finished up a move with this company and I can definitely say that I understand why they have good reviews. Service was efficient, quick and payment was easy as the movers had access to a credit card terminal right on the spot. The quote given to me was much more reaaonable than any competitor and Lou moved my move up a couple days, last minute to accommodate the current pandemic and my fears about not being able to move out in a timely manner. However, I am writing this at the height of COVID-19 and had to make some adjustments to my review for that very reason. The movers arrived with no ppe, masks or gloves, nor did they ask to wash their hands upon arriving. As someone strictly following guidelines, I felt that even if just for saving face, this should have been done by the company. Also, I understand that the customer should reach out, but given the situation, I should have been provided a solution to my question about confirming my move, and not "its on for now, but anything can change". I want to thabk the gentleman and Lou who helped me move, quicker than expected and for the accommodation. It's been a few weeks since our move, but now that things have settled down I wanted to make sure I put in a good word! I get major anxiety for moves, even though I ultimately love the process of a move. Organizing and packing is one of the areas where my obsessive and neurotic habits shine. That said, I was super worried if everything would fit in the vans, since they're not your typical moving trucks. Communicating with the team at Lou's was fine, and Lou himself reached out to make some recommendations and reassure me of things. We ended up getting the Gorilla Bins (separate company) & they were fantastic, so I highly recommend those. We also added a 4th to the crew, so Justin, Reggie, Chris, and Cory showed up within the estimated time frame and got going. By completely lucky chance, we also got an extra van due to a separate cancellation! Justin let us know about some nearby construction that might slow things down, especially if they needed to move the vans & I appreciated the heads up. He also walked through everything and told us that things should be alright to fit in the 2 vans in one trip. They don't usually give you 2 vans so keep that in mind as we would definitely have needed another trip otherwise. We had quite a lot of boxes and furniture though, since we were leaving a spacious 1-bedroom with two people (one of whom is a bit of a nostalgic and "just in case" hoarder - tee hee!). I believe we had 40 Gorilla bins and probably as many other boxes, two dressers, a couch, and king sized mattress. There was traffic so it took some time once things were packed, but once arrived at the new location, the crew got everything up a flight of stairs and into the rooms very quickly! Justin was excellent at directing the crew and making sure things went to the right places. They were also really fun to chat with. Through no one's fault, our king size bed frame was not going to fit the doorway and up the stairs despite us partially disassembling it prior... Reggie took the time to disassemble the rest of the frame and didn't lose a single screw or piece! The frame was a bit complicated so some parts were a bit bent, but nothing that affected the structure or integrity of the frame in holding up the mattress and the ppl sleeping in it lol. Next time we'll be sure to take it apart completely to save everyone the hassle! The end costs ended up still being cheaper than some other up-front estimates I'd gotten, so we're happy that this came in within budget despite taking longer than expected. I'm used to showing the movers the items, and they load the truck. The Sweet Lou crew was grumpy and frustrated with the job. They broke my things. I watched one of my shelves fall out of the sprinter and crack on the street. It also is unclear if they broke a dresser drawer They left the truck unattended while loading it. I lived above a busy pizza shop and it made me very uneasy so I asked my boyfriend to watch the truck They forgot to unload everything off the sprinter and had to come back later that evening. Luckily, I was still at my apartment to receive the additional items. When I tipped 20% they asked for more money because it was awkward to divide that number among three people. I know accidents happen and people forget things, but I've never run into all these issues in one move. I cannot recommend this service and will not be using Sweet Lou again. read more

I used them to move 2 month ago, and I was so happy with their service that I hired them again when I had to move again a few days ago. I'm giving 3 stars as an average. The first move was from a 1bedroom on a 3rd floor walkup in Brooklyn to a studio in an elevator building in Manhattan. It went overtime and took about 4.5 hours, but it made sense because I had a lot of loose items I didn't pack in boxes. The guys were very friendly and courteous, and I felt I couldn't have asked for better movers. The second move was a studio to a studio within the same block. It started 30 minutes late because I was not ready, and not counting that 30 minutes, it took 4.5 hours. Both buildings had elevators, but they had to use stairs for part of the first building because the freight elevator was broken. It still doesn't make sense to me that it took the same amount of time as the first time, moving from Brooklyn to Manhattan, where just the transportation itself took an hour. Also, as I started unpacking this time, there were quite a few damaged and missing items. Nothing super expensive, but things that I'm attached to and that I need. Such as the pot for my lemon tree that I discovered to be shattered when I opened the box, and a dustpan that I could not find when I tried to sweep the soil. I asked them about the dustpan 2 days ago, and they said they would deliver them to me yesterday. They didn't, and they have not responded to my follow-up email either. I didn't even pack the tree in a box the first time, but this time I did. I think I packed better in general this time. And the transportation was literally just around the block for the parking, so I imagine they weren't damaged during the drive, but because of how rough they were in handling them. How could you take 4.5 hours to move from a studio to another studio within the same block where both of them had elevators most of the time and manage to break multiple things? I had a really great move with Sweet Lou early July this year! Their email communication is stellar, they provided a COI for the building I was moving into, and their prices are transparent! I wish I hadn't had to move (don't we all) because it is just truly a special kind of torture to move in the Brooklyn summer. I had a terrible time with my old management of my previous apartment and had to move again just a year after we moved in. Obviously, this led to a particularly anxiety-driven move where tension was high and things were everywhere. Mitchell and his crew (Travis, Tyler, and Paul) did a great job of efficiently moving our stuff in about 4 hours. We moved from a 1.5 bedroom railroad with an inordinate amount of stuff (we also rented 60 Gorilla Bins as per their recommendation on the website--SO worth the money, don't scrounge around for cardboard that could potentially break, I would 100% rent the bins again if I had to). Things included a king mattress and bed, a huge floor lamp, the aforementioned bins, a TV console, a pantry closet, and a whole lot more. Our move took two trips, which I expected, but they were clearly very experienced and took no time at all packing and driving the van. Fragile items were wrapped in blankets and nothing was broken! They followed through with e-mail messages. My buildings also required a COI which they got to me within 2-3 business days after my request. Make sure before you request, you look at their FAQ because they're very descriptive of costs/flight costs/deposits/time slots. They also request that you send pictures of bulkier items ahead of time as well. On move on day, they were very punctual - in fact 10 minutes early! They came in, and got down to business right away. I also appreciated them asking if we still wanted them to wear their masks despite being vaccinated. They were also super flexible with some of the bigger items I forgot to list and was able to fit in their sprinter van. Within an hour, they packed their van with all my belongings then proceeded to drive safely to the destination. And within another hour, they finished unpacking. They were attentive in asking if there were particular spots the boxes needed to be. I really enjoyed their old-school movers trick with leaving a quarter to prop the door open, lol. I used to think that paying for movers was for suckers, lazy people, and people with too much crap and not friends to help them. But then I had to move in the middle of a pandemic. In July. Out of a 6th floor walkup. Between two boroughs. With all of my crap (of which there is probably too much). These guys showed up right on time and had all of my stuff out the door and into the van faster than I thought possible. From the time they showed up to the time I signed my paperwork and they said goodbye was less than three hours. I did not think that was possible. I had a great experience with Sweet Lou. Lou lives up to the name -- great guy, honest, and keeps it real. Extremely responsive on email, good communication. He also took care to provide a very reasonable and fair quote considering the logistics of my move. Also, I moved when there were piles of snow on the ground, and the guys were pros and handled it like champs. Overall, these guys are genuine and good and I'm grateful I found this company! Lou's moving service was excellent. Lou himself is extremely flexible to work with. I was stressed because my closing date kept changing but he worked with me and reassured me that it was fine. On the morning of the move, four men came bright and early and boy did they work. They really earned their money. There was no damage to any of my belongings but a few bumps to the newly painted walls in the new house, which were only superficial. I would highly recommend this company to anyone planning to move. I myself do not want to ever move again! They moved us from a 3 bedroom into another 3 bedroom, so we had a lot of stuff. Four men and a big truck, and it took two trips. But they were great.
