It was a very small garden but the hiking trail down into the bottom forest was amazing. The tulips were all in bloom and several trees were flowering. I am sure this place is gorgeous in mid April. We were traveling through the area so we went a bit early for spring flowers. I would love to go back at a later date. We saw a few different birds, lizards and squirrels. There's a super cute children's garden with a finger painting wall, a fairy town with a running toy train. The price was $15 per person and it seemed a bit pricey for such a small garden. Perhaps I would feel differently if there were more flowering gardens. I would love to come back again when there's more flowers and plants in bloom. There's a small gift shop and everything was fairly priced. I bought a book about birds and some magnets. The staff was very friendly and gave some good advice on where to spot birds and reptiles. read more

This seven acre botanical garden in Gainesville is open Tuesday to Sunday 9-3 and 5-10pm for Gainesville Glows: Lanterns and Lights for the holidays. We were there for the holiday light decorations. We entered through the gift shop. We walked around the trail. They had a booth for drinks and an area S'more's making. Price was a bit expensive at $24.95 per adult for the short time it took for us to walk around. Parking was $10. The main location in Atlanta is nicer but it was still fun. read more

I visited the Atlanta botanical garden in Gainesville, Georgia last night for their display of Christmas lights. It was the first year that the people of the Atlanta botanical gardens located in Atlanta, journey up to Gainesville to create a beautiful display of Christmas lights. The only thing that was missing was the Christmas music that they pipe in throughout the garden. It definitely would've felt a little more like Christmas had we heard some Christmas music. The weather definitely was "wintry" with temperatures hovering around 38° or so. The walk around the the path that went through the display of lights was wonderful, and everywhere you looked there was a great deal of beauty. Going with friends, old and new, was a great deal of fun. The entry fee to get into the garden was $25 which I felt was a little pricy for what we walked through. Because it was the first year of this kind of display in this location, I think they should've dropped the price as it was very short, and there was no music. I have yet to visit this botanical garden during flowering season, but I think I might try that out. Evidently the garden is much larger than the small section I saw last night. It was a beautiful day and a Scarecrow surprise at the Atlanta Botanical Garden-Gainesville. The entry to the AB Garden comes at a stiff price for four adults...there is no senior discount. With map in hand and a wheelchair for access, the AB Garden's pathways are wonderfully made of hardtop concrete. The highest elevation point to reach was at the Children's playground where we marveled at the water fountains and miniature tram. Further down the pathway we have a babbling brook with rocky waterfalls giving a peaceful look between the many plants and flowers. We took pictures around every bend as the changing season brought out autumn colors. We had a peaceful overlook of a colorful leafy forest below and found a place where metallic artists can be brought alive to play string instruments. We took pictures of interesting bushes and berries as well as tiny petals and deep red flowers. Can we rest on these giant mushrooms? We found a "lake" with water lily plants and we found ginger green stalks with fragrant white flowers. AB Gardens has whimsical features such as giant frogs and Desmond the Dragon. October Scarecrows artistry was placed strategically on the winding pathways. They are numbered and you can vote for the one you liked best. A wedding took place while we walked from one end to the other and we had a good view of the sloping auditorium. One can spend all day and look for the descriptive little signs with Latin names describing the fauna and flora in front. Unfortunately some were either misplaced or got pulled out. We are sure that the volunteers and arborists and Plant management crew are on top of things as we continued to be amazed. Thanks for the placement of many benches to rest our weary legs. Atlanta Botanical Garden was a welcome place for a peaceful and informative afternoon. read more

After walking through the garden, we had a family member take one last walk. I have a 9-month-old baby and, due to the cold, I decided to wait in the lobby because he was chilly. Some members of our group also stood to the side and said we would wait. Then, rudely, a staff member asked us if "we were just talking or actually waiting for someone." We replied, "waiting." She then rudely said, "I will give you a moment but you need to leave." I was given 2 minutes, and when my family member hadn't shown up, she said, "I have been more than generous you need to leave," forcing my family and 9-month-old into the cold. Considering the cost of these tickets, we felt we were treated quite poorly and thought I would share. Also light compared to the price you pay were not worth it. read more

Atlanta Botanical Garden, WE LOVE! $10 cheaper than the Atlanta location but just as beautiful! We decided to drop in for Sunday funday and I was happy to see it wasn't as busy as the Atlanta location. There was so many parking spots available too, so I was already happy we opted for this location instead. The service- as soon as we walked inside we were greeted by 3 friendly staff members and they were kind enough to give us some tips and tricks on the garden. They also provided maps and sent us on our way! The restrooms were also very clean and that's a plus!! The garden was such a beautiful sight and we spent 1 hour walking the trails and seeing all that there was to offer. There are numerous benches and fanned areas in case you want to take a quick break. This was definitely worth it and if you've been to the ATL location be sure to check this one out too! Simply put, Atlanta Botanical Gardens secondary location in Gainesville, Georgia is spectacular... ESPECIALLY in the blooming seasons. The Garden waste no time dazzling you with its beauty from the moment you turn into the entrance off Cleveland Hwy. They don't play around getting you in the mood, even the parking lot is well landscaped! You first need to acquire your tickets for entry at the architecturally beautiful Visitor Center. It is recommended you buy your tickets online to guarantee entry. All non-member tickets have limited timed entry and include exhibitions like Origami in the Garden and Cocktails in the Garden (May-September). Current prices are $14.95 for adults (13+) and $12.95 for kids (3-12). Just as a comparison, that is $10 cheaper than the least expensive adult or kids tickets to the Atlanta location... and this garden is more than 5 times larger in acreage. The Atlanta location is roughly 30 acres while the Gainesville location is said to be around 168 acres. But more on that later. WHERE SHOULD YOU START??? You will exit at the rear of the Visitor Center into the gardens. There you are immediately faced with a 3 way decision: Do I go straight towards the woodland gardens & overlooks, left to the Amphitheater and Event Lawn or right to visit the Ada Mae Pass Ivester Children's Garden. . . . . . . . . . . [ CHILDREN'S GARDEN ] Let me just say each direction is lovely and offers eye candy for any nature lover, but if you are looking for show stopping floral razzle-dazzle, you simply must begin here. Don't let the name fool you, because this area is as much for kids as it is for the kid-at-heart! It is a 2.5 acre master class on garden design. Features for kids include a fort/treehouse playground, ornamental art, squirting water features, animal shaped topiaries and Desmond the Dragon, a concrete feature incorporated into the walking path. Photo opportunities abound all throughout the Garden, but especially here! The trail to the Children's Garden takes you past the tranquil Forest Pond. From there you will switchback through all its beauty to the highest point in the garden. Shortcuts are built into the landscaping, encouraging little ones to explore what may feel to them like an off-trail adventure, but it's really all part of the plan. [ WOODLAND GARDEN & OVERLOOKS ] The WOODLAND section of the Garden is a more subdued walk through nature and seems more intent on quiet personal reflection and meditation. There are plenty of benches throughout the trail in strategic (often shaded) locations. One section is called Overlook Garden, but it really doesn't offer a view befitting the name. Also available is a roughly 1.2 mile hiking loop into the woods via three trails (Holly Ridge, Sourwood & Dogwood). * GARDEN FACTS * The Gainesville location has only been open since 2015, and the Children's Garden only since the Spring of 2020. But expansion plans are in the works! One of the first orders of business is to increase the parking area to accommodate visitors better. The gardens boast a diverse plant palate with more than 1300 different varieties. But I don't think visitors of the Gainesville location will be disappointed. In my humble opinion the two should not be compared anyway. THE ATLANTA LOCATION started with very humble beginnings in 1976 and it has taken 46 years to become what it is today. Back in the 70's, a trailer served as a visitor center AND gift shop. The suspension bridge through the hardwood forest wasn't built until 2010, 34 years after it opened to the public. So at only 7 years old, the Gainesville location still isn't even a teenager yet! On Sunday I drove 1 hour north of my home and spent a lovely afternoon at the Gainesville Botanical Garden. It's a fairly new garden and it was my first time visiting. It's part of the Atlanta Botanical Garden so I was able to use my annual membership and get in for free and get 10% off in the gift shop. This garden is much smaller than the Atlanta garden, I actually preferred that it had a more intimate energy and there was so many hidden spots to sit on a bench or a swing and just take in the amazing woodland view or listen to water flow in the stream garden. The weather was absolutely perfect for Fall, it was an overcast day that was very breezy. I made frequent stops and gazed at the flowers, and trees. If you love the Autumn, you will love the garden right now.   The Children's Garden has a fairy theme. It was pretty cool and I probably spent most of my time walking around searching for the fairies, admiring the cute fairy villages, the colorful windmills, and giant frog plant sculptures. I also walked up and down the balance beam dragon that was guarding the entrance (no shame here, lol).     There are so many hidden spots and cool art, as you're exiting don't miss the open lawn that is filled with whimsical art, the art is metal and shaped like performers playing instruments, it's very cool!! read more

What an absolutely beautiful relaxingly lush oasis.melts away the rush of the busy outside traffic and commotion. I could walk through all day and sit in the shade of the lovely trees looking at the various plants and flowers. Locals come to take daily walks and are very friendly. I visited here in December so there was less in bloom, but they had the holiday tree walk which was really nice. The botanical garden is not very big and can be seen in an hour or so. They did make sure to have potted evergreens and pansies so there were some blooms. The gift shop has some interesting gifts and a nice variety of local honey. I would love to visit again in spring. Rating from F to A+++ I give it an A- just because it's pretty small and didn't have as many Winter blooming plants as it could have. read more

Excellent specimens of numerous plants, over 150 varieties of magnolias, 300 varieties of hydrangea, multiple hibiscus, so many varieties all in an expertly manicured garden with winding paths traversing over a waterfall. I credit Kaneka R. for whetting my appetite for visiting the Atlanta Botanical Garden's Gainesville location. I had heard about the place but confess that the drive from the city lessened the appeal. COVID-19 swooped in and changed life as I know it. Now going outside to get mail is considered a daily highlight (but gotta make sure to wipe everything done with Clorox wipes once I bring them inside) and driving an hour here, a couple there ain't no thing at all. With my last plane ride in February returning from a week in Miami, where the hell else was I going? (Definitely not brave enough yet to fly, even with masks and all the other germ defense paraphernalia out there.) My dudes and I have ventured a bit away from home, having checked out the Insta darling, Getaway House, as well as taking a Blue Ridge cabin trip. These breaks have been reinvigorating, to be sure, but in a year during which we are trying to save as much as possible to weather the uncertainty, they are not financially sustainable. That's where the Atlanta Botanical Garden at Gainesville swoops in to save the day (and some money to boot). We have been members for years now (folks with kids, this membership pays for itself ad infinitum if the garden is conveniently located to your abode). We went just the weekend after Thanksgiving (which we celebrated in a low-key way and makes me want to continue doing so forever...) and I had lowish expectations what with us going into winter. I was shocked by how beautiful the gardens were, even with leaves having fallen from many of the trees. The evergreens kept the grounds lush, as did the numerous vivid flowers still in bloom. While I am no landscape architect (looking at my youngest sister who names plants on sight by their Latin moniker) nor botanist nor horticulturist, I am fairly certain that many of the plants in Gainesville are different from those in the Atlanta gardens. We also saw various Christmas trees that our son excitedly ran to to check out the themes. We picked up a scavenger hunt checklist when we checked in, which I recommend wholeheartedly to those with little ones. If you haven't gone yet, don't delay. Outdoor spaces have been a lifesaver to our family's sanity during the pandemic and we are overjoyed to add the Gainesville garden to our rotating list of decently safe places to visit. read more

The Atlanta Botanical Garden just built this new garden recently and I wanted to check it out with my son. It's at the very end of Gainesville, while coming here you can see some of the beautiful Georgia Mountains. Though I am not sure exactly why this is called Atlanta Botanical Garden. Gainesville Botanical Garden might be better considering it is in Gainesville, Georgia, unless they did this to let visitors know that it was owned by the same organization. I recently joined as a member, so I have been wanting to check this place out. So far what they have is beautiful, though I did not realize that only about 5 acres is completed so far, but the entire property consists of 168 acres. When you consider all of this land, the amount of property is actually over five times the amount that the garden has in the Atlanta garden, so when it is completed, it will be massive and much better I can only imagine. The visitor's center here is beautiful. I love the architecture, whoever designed it did a fabulous job and those wooden ceilings are something else. Walking through on the pedestrian pathway through the wrap around garden is very peaceful and the pond and stream adds a great touch. In the centre of the pathway are a few honey bee hives, which I thought was wonderful, just do not get too close. [Why the Garden is so important] Just a little how history how the Atlanta Botanical Garden received the 168 acres for this garden. Lessie and Charles Smithgall who are the owners of the Gainesville Daily Times Newspaper donated the land in 2002. Lessie is still around too, she is currently 104 years old and I have attached a picture of her too. Now although I really liked the place, do keep in mind it is extremely small in comparison to the one downtown and there is not much to see, yet... So it is hard to give it a high rating, but based on what I saw I'll give it a solid four stars. I think for like half the price of the original one in Atlanta this one does a good job especially if you're into local plants! There are many trails for those who love to hike so wear good shoes because you will be going up steep slopes at times to see some of these trees. I went in the spring and tulips and flowers were just blooming so it was lovely and crisp to go at this time. The welcome center is nice with a small gift shop. My friend and I went when the wooden whimsy structures were around and it's truly amazing to go inside and look at how the artist had woven all these tree branches together to make these structures. I recommend getting pics from outside and from within. It's great to bring kids to and very therapeutic for geriatric populations as I saw people pushing them in wheel chairs. Everyone is pleasant and people are usually positive and serene here. I love their train set that you can press a big red button to to get it to go. Really neat way to put toys and something wistful in a large garden. It's located in Gainesville so for people out of town, be clear this is NOT the main one in ATlanta so please do not be disappointed if it is smaller and things are more "local" as the more foreign and showy things are in downtown Atlanta. read more

Made a visit here on a trip to Helen (located maybe 45-50 minutes from this Bavarian town). It is a relatively small place and took our group about 30 minutes to tour, but definitely worth the admission price of $8.00! The flowers and trees were beautiful and rhe facility (both inside and out) was impeccably clean. This is a pleasant, serene place. Granted, it's not as large as the one in Midtown Atlanta, but that is reflected in the $8 admission fee -- and hey, free parking! There is one main trail that meanders its way through several planting beds. Not much was blooming when we visited in December, although it was still a lovely, peaceful spot to spend a sunny warm day, and I observed that ample tulips have been planted for the "Spring Blooms!" event that will occur in early spring. The path was well-maintained and clean, and I was impressed with all the seating available along the path -- I can't resist a swinging bench or rocking chair, and the environment fostered wanting to sit and enjoy the ambiance. "Why rush?" said the lungwort. "Stay awhile, breathe the fresh air, and let your worries evaporate..." Well, it's hard to argue with a plant. It takes about an hour or 1.5 hours to walk the place, depending upon whether you take any of the two perimeter hiking trails that are each a half mile long. I would recommend taking these trails; they are pleasant and educational, with signage that indicates the types of trees and plants you encounter along the trails. These were clearly marked and planned as part of the garden experience. There's an outdoor amphitheater here for summer concerts. Rather than individual seats, the "stands" are grass terraces on which you'd lay out a blanket or lawn chairs. This seems like a nice event and I plan to return for one of the summer concerts. There was a Lego exhibition going on when I visited that was accompanied by two Lego building spots for the kids, one with huge blocks and the other with several tables of normal-sized Legos. There seem to be some good activities planned for the kids; I was rather jealous of the kids around me that were checking the various garden spots off their "Bingo" cards. AND they have a toy train display, too! BONUS: If you're a member of the Atlanta Botanical Garden, your yearly pass works here, too! read more

This new location is very worth the drive from Atlanta and the price is less than a matinee'. It's free if you are a member. It is much smaller than the Atlanta garden in midtown but it is still beautiful and I enjoyed the walk through the woods: a shady 1/2 mile loop and a trail around the perimeter of the facility. The cafe' is not complete but there will be a nice area for indoor and outdoor dining. There is a small gift store and some vending available. The bathrooms are plenty & clean. The outdoor amphitheater looks great and they were setting up for a concert that night. There are lots of nice places to sit down on a bench, a swing, or a rocking chair and enjoy the day. I suggest having lunch at Cheddar's in Gainesville after you spend the morning in the garden :) read more

Very disappointing. Visited three years ago and enjoyed the gardens. This visit was so lacking it felt like we were walking a nature trail. Almost all ground covering or plants that hadn't flowered. Long drive and $24 when we could have stayed in Cumming. The grounds were also not very well maintained. Portion of the train derailed and left lying on the ground, sign hanging, non-working water fountain, and weeds all over the beds. Hoping it improves. We won't be returning. read more

This very weekend, my mom and I were just talking about driving down to Atl and visiting ABG. On our way down from Jaemor Farms she actually said "Hey, I think they just opened up around here..let's go check it out" and we did. We drove in through the beautiful, new grounds with my my grandparents and little sisters and were greeted throughout the drive from people who I guess were directing traffic. Parking was easy, as we got there around 11 on Saturday morning.. We walked in and purchased our tickets ($8 per Adult and $5 per child) and were given a map. We made our way around the Botanical Gardens and were relieved to see plenty of places to sit and rest or take pictures. The grounds were nice and clean as one would expect them to be since they are brand new. There was a pretty large concert area too that was neat. There were employees here and there and they seemed to attract kids with stuffed animals or showing them "cookie trees" :) I was not able to walk down the trail because I actually had a foot sprain and really shouldn't have been there walking around in the first place, but I did stay on the swing with my grandfather and waited for everyone else to come back up. When they did, they said it was even prettier down there... I was a little disappointed that hardly any of the flowers were bloomed (which is understandable because again, they are new) so everything was really green and not full of color. I wish the price would have been a little discounted and not full price because of this. But all in all it was a good time, it will be beautiful in a month or two. Definitely worth the admission price, though walking every inch of the gardens + the trails took us maybe an hour in total. I love that they're so close by {we're right around the corner!} and we loved reading about the plants and flowers that were planted. What a great space just outside the heart of Atlanta! We found this gem after we finished a morning over at the Georgia Aquarium. What attracted me to the garden was Chihuly in the Garden was going on. I just love Chihuly and just glass sculptures in general. You start by driving up this long driveway that has trees on both sides of you. You take your ticket and proceed to the parking garage. Once in we purchased our tickets, got a map, and headed out into the gardens. You're in the middle of Atlanta but it feels and sounds so peaceful. You really don't hear a lot of traffic noise or feel like you are in the city. The gardens sprawl out and provide you with plenty of places to sit and enjoy the gardens. The Chihuly exhibit had 20 pieces of his work scattered around and worked into the gardens. His beautiful pieces felt as though they have always been there. They did a nice job incorporating the two elements. Towards the center of the garden is a restaurant as well as a smaller cafe out back. We did stop there for a bite to eat as well as a well needed drink break. Once again I had chicken salad with celery in it. Is that a southern thing? Anyway it was good and hit the spot. They do appear to be adding onto the gardens a little further away over by the greenhouse but I don't recall what they said it was nor when it was expected to open. It was all around a nice way to enjoy some outside activities...stroll through nature and the gardens and enjoy a nice early June day. read more

Great place to enjoy nature. It's a newer facility, these gardens aren't fully mature yet but they've done a great job and for the much lower cost it's worth the visit. The hiking trails are very nice and the bee hive is a cool addition. read more
