We're big fans of Atotonilco, but started coming to this location after my dad heard this was the best one. This location and the food quality is a step above the rest for sure. The inside is not the most aesthetic, but it's clean and does what it needs to. Staff is super nice and quick with the orders. You can easily get in and get out here if you're in a rush or pressed for time. You can get tacos, tortas any day or birria only on the weekends. They have most types of meat options and some vegetarian options as well. Tacos are fresh, meat is fresh. You'll definitely come out full. read more

I have been to this location a few times, just haven't gotten around to reviewing it. Just at any of their other locations, Atotonilco makes the best Al Pastor, not only in the city but in the world. You basically just find a table and seat yourself. Most locals that come here kind of already know what they want so as soon a you take a seat be prepared to have your order ready because they'll ask you what you want to order seconds after you take a seat. Obviously if you're not ready, they won't mind if you ask for a few minutes. As for the al pastor, I visit Atotonilco exclusively for their their al pastor. I'm pretty sure their other meats are great, but nothing compares to their al pastor. They slice the meat right off the spit and quickly sear it on their flat top mixed in with their sauce. What you get is a very juicy crispy and tender al pastor taco. Put some of their green salsa on and it's game over. read more

My favorite is el chocomilk with cinnamon yum delicious. I know the streets or roads are horrible and need major repair but it is worth the trip to see Beto the cashier. I wish i could give a honest review of the food. but I wasn't given the opportunity to dine at this facility. My Husband and I are traveling to Chicago with my Service Dog from California to Chicago. On 26 August 27, 2021 on or around 10pm, we went to dinner with our friends that live here in Chicago to Atotonilco Restaurant. We arrived to the establishment and sat down at a table, and I immediately place my service dog under the table (because that is what he is train to do when I and him are at a dining facility). As, the server was approaching is to take our order, he was called back to the register by the cashier. Which at that point the cashier informed us we could not have the Dog? We informed him he was a service dog. I walked to the cashier to provide/ show him my service dog, ID, and he did not want to see it. Cahier was adamant to refuse serves if we had to dog. My friend and I tried to explain what I service dog meant and what exactly my service dog was train to do. Cashier was not interested in hearing or understanding out information. Cashier said he called the owner and owner still said no service if we have the dog. My dog was wearing his harness, leash, and service ID at the time him and I was refused service at this establishment that serves the general public. The restaurant had a total of 3 customers, one cashier, one server, and 3 cooks. I fell that this establishment has violated the "White Cane Law and Service Animal Access Act" My Dog at no time was disruptive, and stood by my side on a leashed at all times. After we left my friend call the Police Department to male a complain, and ask then if they can go and explain what a service animal is. I am a US Veteran and due to my PTSD and other disabilities is why I have a service dog with me. My dog was allowed on a airplane on my flight to Chicago, but not allowed at this establishment. It is unfortunately that this establishment lacks the knowledge or the will to understand what a service Dog is and what they provide to their handler. read more

This place has the best milkshakes in Chicago. There's always long lines here no matter what time of the day. They don't take orders over the phone and they always turn off their online ordering system when they're busy. I also like hamburgers, fries, and hot dogs from here but milkshake is the only thing I usually get from here. read more

The food used to be worth the expensive prices, but today was the worst service I've had in a long time. The usual waiter with a slick bun had an attitude as soon as he came to take our order. Not only did he get one of our orders wrong, but when we asked for a remake of ONE item, he told us that they would simply take the toppings off. We insisted because of a food allergy concern and he threw the plates onto our table and walked away. I followed him with the plate to the cook and asked for the remake and the waiter snatched the plate out of my hands, gave it to the cook and told him "just take off the top stuff". The cook then proceeded to pick at the food with bare hands and try to give it back to me. I was obviously upset and the cook ended up throwing away the half picked at taco away. My family continued to eat and left a tip but we were ultimately disappointed how little they cared about customer service to be demanding such prices. read more

But 3.50 a taco, and after the meals, lettuce, 2 large slices of tomato and onion, I would expect for there to not be enough room to close the tortilla completely. Coworkers and I ordered takeout during lunch at work. The three of us got two tacos each, all the carne asada with lettuce, tomato, and avocado. I was a little surprised that there weren't any onions and cilantro, but these tacos were the two best carne asada tacos I have ever eaten! The skirt steak is chopped finely, super juicy and tender, and had that nice char grilled burnt ends flavor to some pieces. They were cheap too, 6 big tacos for $13 or so. I come here for the tortas de lengua and the agua de pina. The lengua or beef tongue is soo incredibly tender that it makes you forget what part of the cow it comes from. I like to order the torta (or sandwich) with avocado. The "aquas" are great too. It's a great alternative to a milk shake. Aguas just has the fruit and sweetened water, but they also offer milkshakes. They go down nicely with the great tacos and tortas. The service is usually very prompt. The place isn't very fancy at all but the food is so good and cheap. It's always worth traveling all the way from the Northside. They have several locations but this one is a block over from tortilleria of the same name, where the tortillas are made that go out to their restaurants and grocery stores all over the city. Their tortillas are my favorite. They have the freshest flavor and are minimally processed. If you read the ingredients on the wax paper wrapper, you see that they have only a few all natural ingredients. Also if you feel adventurous enough to make your own tamales, you can find ground fresh masa. read more

I got home and there was only a torta in the bag, and while it was a nice size, it was flavorless. I checked my receipt to make sure I was charged correctly, and I was only charged for the torta luckily. I called and asked about rice and beans and apparently they don't have any? Huh? Aren't you a Mexican restaurant? Okay....I guess. I would've thought they would have told me that when I requested it and proceeded to pay. What made me write a review and make a comment here is when I completed my meal and asked for the bill, I was not expecting to pay $4.50 for each taco. The prices posted on the wall say $3.00 for a taco (Carne Asada + Al Pastor) and I didn't realize this until I was driving away. I don't remember paying this much last time I ate here. Short of having the guy behind the counter holding up a gun... I do feel ripped off. I agree with the other comments, if I am going to pay that much for lunch, I rather go some place that has a cleaner and appealing eating area. Tortas are good. Love em. Milkshakes are the best (strawberry) No doubt. Maybe cause they put in a whole mess of sugar but if you order a large drink to go they'll give it in a big ass cup. It's about 4 bucks for a large. a torta is about 4 something, tacos are about 2 bucks or a lil more. Its open all the time. Good overall, but did not meet my admittedly high expectations going in. First of all -- $3 for a taco? That's South Loop prices! Second, most of the different beef variety tacos tasted very similar. The "Beef Tongue" taco though did stand out, and it was absolutely delicious. I also liked the quesadillas (nice and meaty!), though I also thought they were a little expensive for what you got. I've officially found my new taco shop on the Southside. I got a taco al pastor and a taco barbacoa (which was spicy!) at a reasonable price. They were quick, food was still hot when I got back to the office, and the portions were healthy. I'll have to try the fresh fruit bar next. I've been to Atotonilco in the past, a different location however. The food was standard, there wasn't anything special about it. My main gripe, and the reason for the low rating, is because of how dirty the place was. The bathroom was disgusting, there was no soap or paper towels. There were dirty dishes piled up in view of the dining area. Our server was extremely nice and attentive & I saw that the entire staff was the same way - the cooks, cashier, even the random man in the back that was sweeping away. I grew up eating here and still go back when I'm in the old neighborhood. Nothing has changed. The prices are so cheap and the quality is amazing. It's a classic "hole in the wall." Great juices and tortas. They make the tortillas right down the street, so stop buy and stock up. The food here is amazing and I was so happy that they're expanding all around Chicagoland. My girlfriend loves this place since she's been coming here since she was young. I like it, but don't love it. The place is kept very clean and I've never sat at a dirty table while eating. The menu compromises of just tacos and tortas. They due offer a good selection of different variants though. Their al pastor and carne asada are very good. The tacos themselves are decently sized and are a bit expensive. They cost about $2.25 for each individual taco, but it's worth it in my opinion. This place is a lot better than most taquerias I've been too and the service is attentive, since they want a decent tip. I'd recommend this place to anyone who loves tacos. read more

Went to the 47th st location thinking they were affiliated with the other Atotonilco's boy was I wrong. I got 3 tacos for myself, steak,lamb, and al pastor and a steak Torta for my wife. The good was absolutely horrible, I can't understand how they stay in business with food this tasteless. The al pastor was the only thing that had a little flavor but it was dry. Everything else was horrible, we actually threw the food away. I brought the torta home to my wife who was very hungry and she took one bite and spit it out. I am lucky she is not divorcing me the food was that bad. Well the last sentence was a joke but you get the picture. They had the nerve to be stingy with their nasty sauce. read more

I have been going to this place since I was a child and this is the only taco place that never disappoints! The tacos are always stuffed with perfectly seasoned meat and the tortillas slighty have a delicious crisp. I always get a chocomilk liquado! Mmmmm for the people talking about no rice and beans its a taco joint not a restaurant, the menus are on the wall!! A lot of taco places don't serve rice and beans. Although i think their sister one on 26th does. No atm, no problem, the meal is like 5 bucks, and they have an atm. The atm is in spanish ? i have been eating at 'tonocs for over 20 years. this is not somewhere to go if you're looking for a fine dining experience. this is the place to go for fresh hot food, priced reasonably. i am a fan of their carne asada tacos - fat and gristle free!! love it. i can't count the number of places i've gone to in the city where i've gotten less than stellar carne. i am hardly a meat whore, so when i do order it i expect it to be delicious and gristle free! i always get mine loaded w/ onions and lettuce, w/ crema on the side. their crema is the best. i have never had a bad experience w/ it. and don't forget the carrots - fresh, crunchy, yum! i don't know if the jicama is a new thing for them, or it was just that long since i've gone, but they do this right. back in the late 80's this was the place to go after clubbing. i imagine it's still the place to be. oh, and don't forget the horchata! it's FRESH. fresh made. not a mix! love it! read more
