This Portillo's location is ginormous. There's downstairs and upstairs seating. The ordering is on the circle of kiosks in the center of the restaurant. Bathrooms are upstairs in the back corner. The menu is very extensive. On the kiosk, you can add extras like cheese whiz, etc. I think I got a regular sausage hot dog and the beef sandwich with a sausage. They were both pretty tasty. I tried the chocolate cake, which was heavenly. I liked it much better than the strawberry cake, which came in its own little bowl. Good for large groups. Pro tip: when you sign up for their emails, you get a free order of fries right away!

Beef sandwich some peppers have a kick. I usually add a little mustard to my sandwich.

I visit this place everytime I come to Chicago from out of state. The food is the perfect, hotdogs are amazing and the beef sandwich hits the spot with hot crunchy French fries. Two meals will be more than enough food and spilt so you can taste hot dog and sandwich. Top it off with one of their shakes, we normally do chocolate. Services is fast and they do a good job of cleaning up tables fast so people don't have to wait for a seat. I recommend coming here. Best part they are open until 1am most days.

I was told I had to try this spot for a Chicago dog, and it definitely did not disappoint! I ordered a Chicago dog with everything, a side of fries, and a sauce flight. Ordering was easy, with the option to use either a kiosk or the counter. I chose the counter, and the employee who took my order was friendly. While waiting for my food, I enjoyed listening to a different employee call out order numbers. He was clearly having fun, and his positive energy was amazing! Once my order was ready, I headed upstairs to find a seat. It was much quieter up there, away from the hustle and bustle of the ordering area. The Chicago dog was delicious and lived up to the hype. The fries were warm, though not quite hot. As for the sauce flight, it was meh. The comeback sauce was my favorite by far. I wasn't a fan of the BBQ or giardiniera sauces, and the ranch and honey mustard were just okay. I'm glad I tried them, but I probably wouldn't order the sauce flight again. Overall, the hot dog was excellent, the fries were decent, and I'd skip the sauces next time. If you're looking for a great Chicago dog, this place is definitely worth a visit!

Visited on a very busy weekend and had a good time. Line went to the exterior door to order on the kiosk, took 5-10 minutes to get there. Ordering is straight forward with lots of customizations. Picking up your food is a bit hectic as there is a main pick up counter and a separate area for pick up if they are swamped. It'll be announced on the speakers. Took close to an hour for our order to be called, customers crowd the pick up counter even though they just ordered so be prepared to squeeze past people to get your food. Tables are also taken up by customers waiting for their group to grab their food. Seating is on both levels and outside so it's somewhat plentiful but expect some issues if you go at a peak time. As for the food we got the Italian beef, Chicago hotdog, fries, chocolate cake, and the cake shake. The Italian beef is amazing! Would recommend getting that along with extra peppers! The peppers really bring it all together. The Chicago dog was alright, it is good, fresh, and different from your normal hotdog. Fries were fries, they accommodated the meal well but wasn't anything outstanding. Our uber driver recommended the chocolate cake and the shake. I would say the cake is just average, it was a little under 'moist' status and the fudge icing is a little too sweet but maybe that's just how you would picture chocolate cake. The cake shake is the better version of it, mixed with their chocolate shake it felt nicer to suck it up through a straw. If you sign up for their rewards you'll get the cake for $1 Overall not a bad experience, they are opening a new location by the river in downtown so that might help with wait times. Highly recommend that Italian beef!!

I was super stoked to try this portillos in Chicago but the lack of attention to detail really ruined my take out experience. I asked for no onions and no tomatoes. To my surprise my dogs had BOTH onions and tomatoes. Take a second, double check the order, then serve it. Simple mistakes like this shouldn't happen because they are so easy to avoid.

What's going on within the restaurant industry?! Service, food quality and cleanliness have been declining as prices continue to soar. I'm old enough to remember when this particular Portillo's was the fast casual standard for everything that made this kind of restaurant great. The irony of my visit today was to redeem a complimentary fry due to a previous issue. After today's visit I think I'm done with Portillo's for a while. Rude staff, dirty floor and tables, cold food, burger wasn't charred, etc. Tbh, my last few visits have been poor as nostalgia kept me coming back like a toxic relationship. This time I'm walking away.

This Portillos was huge it had two levels. It was easy to order by using one of the kiosks or the app from your phone. My friend and I were waiting for them to call our order number but it was taking a while so I went to the counter and the order had been ready sitting there they just weren't calling out the orders. I'm glad I went up otherwise my food would have gotten cold! I'm not sure if their sound systems were down to call out the order numbers for pick up or if they just don't do that. I came here with my friend as I had never tried the beef sandwich and she highly recommended the cheese fries. I also heard great things about the chocolate cake slice. I added peppers to the beef sandwich to give it some spice but besides that it was bland! I was disappointed but I thought the Chicago dog would make up for it but the bun was soggy. The best part of my order were the cheese fries and I got a free slice of chocolate cake since it was my birthday month! The chocolate cake was the best chocolate cake I've ever had that wasn't homemade. Very moist and lots of frosting! I would come back for the fries and the cake, but I wouldn't order the beef sandwich or Chicago dog again.

My friends and I came to Chicago for a book event and one of the places we wanted to check out was Portillos. I am a glizzy girly and so we definitely had to try the signature hotdogs/ sausages and Italian beef sandwich. The restaurant itself is really spacious, you can either order from a person or a mobile kiosk from the center. We ended up ordering from the kiosk, I ordered the char grilled Maxwell street Polish sausage and an Italian beef. They have an app you can download and get free fries but I was too lazy. Our orders came out quickly, my sausage had a nice bite and tasted so good, I'm not normally a mustard girly but this was really delicious. The beef sandwich was so juicy too, they really pack it with meat, I ended up getting another to keep in the hotel to take home to my husband the next day and it kept really well and he loved it. I also got a chocolate shake car freshener just for my souvenir and it's so cute. Great food, great service, I cannot wait to come back to Chicago!

Visiting Chicago on a business trip. I was looking to check off a few Chicago staples off the proverbial food bucket list. Deep dish pizza. Check. Now, a Chicago dog and an Italian Beef sandwich. I have no idea where the best places are but after asking a few locals and ChatGPT, they directed me to Portillo's. This is an order at a kiosk or register and they call your number and you find a table. I have to say the place is pretty big and it was bustlin' on a Thursday night at 11pm. The decor really can't be described. It's a mix of Chicago memorabilia, celeb photos, and a lot more. It's what I'd imagine if a hoarder did a collab with someone with ADHD. They had what I think was jazzy music in the background. The clientele looked like a mix of finance bros, police, blue collar workers, tourists, and people either going out to a club or starting their "night job." Onto the food. I had an expense account so I went a little hog wild with the ordering. Here's what I ordered and what I thought of it: 1) Chicago dog prepped the standard way "dragged through the garden" so they say. It was okay. I don't know if the dog was sitting in the wrapper while they were preparing everything else or, that's just what it is. The bun was mushy. The dog didn't have a nice snap. It tasted okay. Nothing mind blowing. 2) Italian beef ordered the standard way with hot giardenera. - the beef was dry. Mediocre. 3) fries- crinkle cut. Perfectly salted and crispy. I enjoyed them. They reminded me of Carl's Jr old fries. 4) chocolate cake shake - it was sweet but tasted fine. It's like what I'd imagine if I got a chocolate cake à la mode with chocolate ice cream and you're at the very end when it all mixes together. I liked it overall. Bottom line, would I come back? I wouldn't go out of my way. If I was with a group, I wouldn't put up a fit. I'd probably order something else though.

Came to Chicago for a concert and was recommended to try Portillo's for some Chicago style hot dogs - great experience! Quick service and very spacious seating, and everything came out piping hot! Hot dogs were very filling, and the cheese fries were fantastic. Great tourist experience!

Visiting Chicago, I had to try a legitimate Chicago style hot dog, and Portillo's did not disappoint. The hot dogs were so good I ended up having two. The crinkle-cut fries were tasty, and the beers were huge for only $7. One tip: bring your ID when ordering beers. They carded my wife, and she's 62! Worth a stop if you're visiting Chicago and want to check a Chicago style hot dog off your list

I'm not quite sure how it took me so long to finally have an authentic Chicago dog IN Chicago. And if I'm going to do it right, obviously I'm going to go with the OG. Portillo's knows what they are doing. The bun, the peppers, the relish, everything. It definitely hits when it all comes together. My mom actually went with the beef and cheddar on a croissant and that thing was incredible. Definitely not what we were expecting. If you're looking for what the hype is about Chicago and it's dogs, make sure to start here.

This place was hoppin!! Definitely had to try Portillo's when in Chicago since it's iconic and a staple to the people. It was bustling! Seating upstairs and downstairs. Kiosks help you order faster. And surprising readily priced. At the time of this review May 2026 a dog is about $7.49. While you're waiting in line sign up for the free app to get a free large fry! They call out your numbers at the window so make sure you're paying attention! They are serving sooo many people so be careful cause your order might be wrong. Definitely a Legit dog though! Ambiance was somewhat loud but you can still talk and hear just fine.

What is the powdery stuff on the top of hamburger buns?

Pretty certain a type of flour like on Dave's Killer Breads and Buns.

    Dressing on side?

    You can request that.

Do they have any gluten free bread for the hot dogs?

I believe they have seven types of bread, but all have gluten unfortunately.

2 for 1 hot dogs this week do I need a coupon?

I dont know, stopped going there after new owners raised prices and cut size of sandwichs

Chocolate cake or chocolate cake shake 🤔?

    Chocolate cake!!!

    Beef or pork hot dogs?

    Vienna Beef

I notice there are seeds on hot dog buns. I have a problem where I can't have seeds. Do you offer seedless buns?

Hi! I work at a Portillos in northern Illinois. Unfortunately we dont have a hot dog bun without the seeds, but if you ask the order taker, you can substitute the poppy seed bun for a piece of french bread that we use to serve our Italian beefs!

Years ago, I ate at this location and the counter to the right served a small apple pie baked in a brown paper bag. Do they still sell these?

I haven't seen their apple in years. So I don't think so

    Does chili have beans?

Got chili on hot dog and there were beans in it.

Does anyone know if Portillo's hotdogs are certified Kosher or if they are just "kosher-style" meaning a beef hotdog, but not necessarily Kosher?

Kosher style, not kosher for those who keep kosher.

We had visited Florence last year, and one of the numerous wonderful moments of our trip to Italy was seeing "Il Porcellino" - the lucky bronze boar fountain that draws tourists from around the world. A copy of the boar stands proudly near the entrance of the restaurant, and though it is not as old as the original 1634 sculpture, it was a charming reminder of our amazing Italian holiday. Did I mention that the weekday Happy Hour (4-6PM) specials are quite good? The specials are served only at the bar area, so you might have to wait a few minutes for available seating. We started with some drinks, including two kinds of Negroni. The wild mushroom arancini (5 little balls for $6) were the smallest I've tried, but they were creamy and melt-in-your mouth delicious. The whipped ricotta and jam beautifully served on a strip of toasty focaccia was a unique taste sensation. Prime beef meatballs and short rib sliders on toasted ciabatta bread also hit the spot. Even though we were merely dining at the bar, we enjoyed the overall vibe of the restaurant. There are lots of photos on the walls, interesting lighting from the ceiling, nice serving dishes, and servers who seem to know who their regular diners are. It's just such a whimsical noodle to eat lol Fried Artichoke: Artichoke hearts, caesar aioli.

Alla Vita was great! Glad we went with 4 people because we got to try more dishes. They also have…read morean extensive wine selection. We started with three apps. The octopus surprised me because octopus can be hit or miss for me, but they did it really well! The table bread was also pretty good and cheesy. The Caesar was just fine. Nothing special but not bad (which is good coming from me since I'm not usually big on kale). Of course all of the pastas were yummy. The fusilloni was definitely my favorite from the noodle shape to the sausage and cheese. The ricotta dumplings were suuuuuper cheesy which I really liked (though I could see why others wouldn't) and had a melt in your mouth softness. The rigatoni was tasty, but kinda just tasted like a normal red sauce so would probably try something more interesting next time. We really enjoyed the chicken parm, too. Not as good as the pastas, but definitely tasty and the basil was a good touch. We finished with the guava cheesecake sundae. I really liked the little bits of cake, but the ice cream itself was a little lacking for me. Still a nice sweet treat to finish the meal!! We had the perfect amount of food overall for 4 people!

I left this place dreaming of the rigatoni. This alone should be 5 stars. Any place that has a dish…read morethis good deserves top accolades. And get this... I don't really love pasta. True story. The pizza was absolutely super and the branzino off the charts. That puts the pasta in perspective - all the dishes were just mind blowing. I feel this is a great place for groups - it's loud - but not intolerable. You can still laugh and talk, hear everyone without feeling you are disturbing anyone.
