I truly thought it was overhype and finally made it to Portillo's to try their Italian beef -- it did not disappoint. If you're looking for a quick meal and especially on a late night out, Portillo's will be the go too when visiting Chicago here on out. Service wasn't bad for how long their lines were & the space at the River North location offers plenty of seating and a nice set up.

It was good, definitely feels more like a touristy place. The ordering process was weird and honestly as a first timer, they weren't very helpful. The hot dog was okay, nothing crazy but worth visiting. The decor is really fun and super unique. A lot of places to sit and fun things to look at.

Stopped by here during our Chicago trip and it did not disappoint! My husband and I got 2 hotdogs and fries - it was delish!! We'd never had Chicago-style hotdogs before, and it's truly game changing! The restaurant is also huge and has so much seating for guests. Would love to come back here someday! Also big fans of the comeback sauce, it was great with the fries!

So that's the World-renowned Chicago Dog at Portillos! I have heard a lot about it from friends and it really is so good! The Char'diniera Chicago-Style Dog that I ordered was a new menu item, adding giardiniera peppers and provolone to the classic, giving it a slightly sweet but tart taste to the beefy dog. Everything just worked well together! So delicious! One caveat is that it's a relatively small hot dog so if you are hungry, get two because the line is long. And you don't want to wait another 20 minutes for seconds. On the other hand, the Italian Beef was kinda boring. I suspect they messed up and gave me a plain one but turns out any garnishes are optional extras. The gravy is alright, and I had it on the side to control how much of it I want to use as a dip. The decor is colorful as the 40s-50s music playing. It reminds me of some of those classic 90s themed-casinos like Buffalo Bill at the Nevada State Line. All in all, get the Chicago Dogs, they're worth it, but go elsewhere for Italian Beef Sandwich.

This Portillo's is elite vibes with super fun decor, constant stream of people, and a large car hanging from the ceiling. Again, can't say they have the best Chicago dog around, but it's a solid dog with plenty of toppings. The biggest problem is that the bun is a bit too soft / soggy. Cake shake is still my favorite item. Super thick, creamy, and bits of soft, rich chocolate cake. Just a super fun calorie bomb treat. Fries are always piping hot and fresh because the amount of traffic at this location. For a late night spot, absolutely top tier.

07/2026 Rating: 4.0 RESTAURANT: This location was huge! Two floors of rustic decor like old school bikes and cars during the more simpler times. The first floor is an open space where you place your order via the counter or the screens. One one side, is the mobile order counted, the other is where they call out your number when your food is ready. The second floor has the restrooms and more dining space. CUSTOMER SERVICE: The young lady that took my order was nice. On the other side, it got a bit loud with the screaming out of numbers and staff arguing about whatever. The mobile order pick up side had line because whoever was there was sending people to the other pick ip counter even though the order was clearly a mobile order and the food waiting on the assembly line. Staff cleaning the tables were nice and helpful to a guess. FOOD We ordered the Famous 5 meals number 2 with two hotdogs, fries and a drink. A char'diniera hot dog Maxwell Street Style which is a vienna sausage with lots of grilled onions on top. Lastly, a chicken sandwich and a piece of chocolate cake. The hot dogs were crisp and delicious even-though buried underneath a bed of toppings and huge log of pickle, enveloped in that soft bun. The sausage was delicious too but a bit messy with the wet onion making the buns soggy. Fries were crispy and delicious. The chicken sandwich was sooo juicy it was such a nice surprise. The chocolate cake was soft, light and spongy but the flavor did not come through for me. Overall this was a wonderful way to experience a Chicago Hotdog. The food was delicious and definitely hits the spot. The menu has many options for any diet type. The place is big and is perfect for a large group.

I loved the atmosphere of this restaurant. It was bustling with people on a Tuesday afternoon. The wait to place the order at the kiosk looked like it would take a while but it was super quick. I ordered a regular hot dog with everything with fries and a drink. The hot dog was delicious. I don't need to addd anything it was perfect as served. Service was really fast considering how crowded it was. Served with a sole and a funny little saying. I enjoyed visiting Portillo's when I'm back in Chicago it will be the first place I wlll visit.

This Portillo's location is ginormous. There's downstairs and upstairs seating. The ordering is on the circle of kiosks in the center of the restaurant. Bathrooms are upstairs in the back corner. The menu is very extensive. On the kiosk, you can add extras like cheese whiz, etc. I think I got a regular sausage hot dog and the beef sandwich with a sausage. They were both pretty tasty. I tried the chocolate cake, which was heavenly. I liked it much better than the strawberry cake, which came in its own little bowl. Good for large groups. Pro tip: when you sign up for their emails, you get a free order of fries right away!

I tried to search 'best hot dogs in downtown Chicago' and the search brought up a lot of places which would have been an expensive ride, several miles out of the city ... placed which had closed down ... or unrelated restaurants. Despite its 'tourist trap' reputation ... I figured, if they sell a lot of them, they must be good, right? Spoiler alert ... they sucked. Let's talk about the whole ordering system ... Chaotic, confusing, terrible instructions. This is all compounded by them hiring a cranky senior citizen who stands next to the kiosks and rudely scolds you when you aren't following the impossible to understand procedure. The restaurant is a pasta restaurant connected to a hot dog restaurant and looks a lot like the food court of a rest area off the highway, combined with a casino, including creepy mannequins on catwalks and lots of red and purple spotlights and neon. I opted for a regular Chicago dog (jumbo) ... and some sort of special spiced/smoked Chicago dog. It took nearly 20 minutes from order time to the time my bag arrived at the counter. The bottom level doesn't have nearly enough seating for everyone ... and of course no signs direct you to the upper levels, where tons of empty tables are. Filthy, empty tables. Just looking at the dirty tables was enough to give someone food poisoning. Both hot dogs were cold. It was clear they were probably sitting out being thrown into bags, assembly line style, because they didn't taste fresh (or hot). The bun wasn't toasted or buttered ... Just a cold white poppy seed bun for the 'special' dog and a plain white cold bun for the other. Beyond being lukewarm, the hot dogs were pretty bland and tasteless. I could barely taste the relish or mustard. All I could taste was the dill pickle spear resting on top or the odd little spicy peppers with their stem caps. I recommend ordering some dipping sauce, or cheese. I was very disappointed ... which was slightly offset by only wasting $5.50 per hot dog, which was about $5.00 too much but at least not approaching 'bad airport food pricing'. After trying these, I am all set with having another Chicago hot dog. Maybe it would have lived up to the reputation at a fresher place. This is clearly a mass-produced, assembly line kind of tourist trap. There were hundreds of people there at 2 p.m. For reference, my top hot dog spots ... Pink's in Los Angeles ... Ben's Chili Bowl in DC ... Olneyville System in Providence ... Coney Island in Worcester (probably more for nostalgia) ... so it's not like this is my first fancy hot dog experience. One last thing ... the milkshake was no different than McDonalds.

I can now see what all the hype is all about. This is a local staple for a reason. When I arrived it was crazy packed! People were everywhere. I ordered my meal from the kiosk. My food took a long time. Probably about 20 minutes or longer. But it was so worth it. I ordered a dog, fries & cheese sauce, and a bottled water. I devoured it all. The taste was unreal. It was the best hot dog I've ever tasted. The quality of the meat was perfection. When I bit in the sausage, it would snap back. The flavors were complimentary, everything paired well together. When I'm back in the Chi, I will be back. I'll just prepare for a long wait.

Tried my first Chicago hot dog here at Portillo's and got the OG and the Maxwell. I heard ketchup should NOT be used so I made sure to adhere to that rule. OG style was really tasty! I enjoyed the contrast between the fluffy soft bun, with the cool tomato slices, salty spicy sour pickles, and the hot snappy beef hot dog. It disappeared quickly. I realized I needed another dog. So I went to the kiosk and ordered the Maxwell polish dog next. I love grilled onions and there was an option to get French bread too! The Maxwell was super delicious! The French bread has a crispy shell but was soft within. The polish was juicy and snappy. The onions were caramelized and sweet. I added sports peppers to mine, which added a spicy zing. If I had the option to, I would have liked to add tomato slices too. I'm glad I tried both. Between the two, I think I like the Maxwell a bit more.

It's good it's not bad. A little pricey but it was good and hot only wish my Italian beef was a little more wet. It was dry towards the end of my sandwich. But I do say it's great and it has heat if you order the spicy. Also recommend the chocolate cake shake. It really is a shake in a cup.service was good and the vibe is chill and loud but it's chill. At night it can get pack and may have to wait a just a bit for your food . Cool place for tourists

Beef sandwich some peppers have a kick. I usually add a little mustard to my sandwich.

I visit this place everytime I come to Chicago from out of state. The food is the perfect, hotdogs are amazing and the beef sandwich hits the spot with hot crunchy French fries. Two meals will be more than enough food and spilt so you can taste hot dog and sandwich. Top it off with one of their shakes, we normally do chocolate. Services is fast and they do a good job of cleaning up tables fast so people don't have to wait for a seat. I recommend coming here. Best part they are open until 1am most days.

I notice there are seeds on hot dog buns. I have a problem where I can't have seeds. Do you offer seedless buns?

Hi! I work at a Portillos in northern Illinois. Unfortunately we dont have a hot dog bun without the seeds, but if you ask the order taker, you can substitute the poppy seed bun for a piece of french bread that we use to serve our Italian beefs!

Years ago, I ate at this location and the counter to the right served a small apple pie baked in a brown paper bag. Do they still sell these?

I haven't seen their apple in years. So I don't think so

    Does chili have beans?

Got chili on hot dog and there were beans in it.

Does anyone know if Portillo's hotdogs are certified Kosher or if they are just "kosher-style" meaning a beef hotdog, but not necessarily Kosher?

Kosher style, not kosher for those who keep kosher.

There is outdoor seating under a pergola lined with semi-private planters, while the inside features a bar, high tops, low tops, and large booths. The music was upbeat, giving the space an elevated lounge vibe that pairs really well with the upholstered booths and vintage industrial design. I ordered the Wolf Burger, which is a whopping three-patty burger. That first bite was juicy and pure bliss--a total explosion of great flavors. It was a little messy (like all burgers with an egg), but the extra liquid was perfect for balancing the density of such a meaty burger. The soft bun soaked in a lot of those juices with each bite, intensifying the flavor as I ate more. The fries were thin and on the greasier side--not my personal favorite, but they worked alright as a vehicle for the sauce. Speaking of which, the chili aioli served with the fries was fantastic. We also got the mac and cheese, which hit a great balance between rich and creamy without feeling excessively wet. The boat it came in was a bit small, making it a little messy to scoop out with the serving spoon, but it was soooo good. Overall, it is absolutely a fantastic neighborhood place for comfort food and drinks with friends in a great space!
