I fear that I may lose all my money going forward at Attic Records... I visited for the first time last weekend, and I'm blown away at their sheer volume of records and other physical musical media. The selection is incredible, and it's so well-stocked and organized! After recently entering the world of vinyl (finally have a record player and sound system after years of wanting to jump in), I knew I wanted to get some records to start my own collection. Attic is such a great place for both newbies and seasoned record-heads alike! Their prices are fair and rationally set, and they had a great mix of old and new. I was able to snag both a hugely popular 2024 record as well as a classic 70s record in one visit. Everyone working here is so friendly and helpful, and despite it being a very busy and crowded Saturday afternoon, things did not feel rushed or hurried in the store. Feeling lucky that this place exists, especially given their flood history (roughly 20 years ago!) Great selection which can be a bit overwhelming to dig through. Unless you have a lot of time on your hands, you should arrive with a good idea of what you're looking for. That said, their staff is incredibly knowledgeable and will look up anything you're searching for. The downside is that it is very crammed with every square inch filled to the brim. It absolutely gives it character but can be difficult to navigate the aisles or enjoy the time spent digging. Their prices are reasonable from what I've seen. read more

I have only been here a couple times as I just moved to this side of the city and this is quickly becoming my new favorite record store! HUGE selection of all things. Old, current, just a lot of everything. I am terrible at navigating record stores. Especially ones with a out of the norm, placement for things. I rely heavily on the staff and their knowledge of things. Sometimes the staff makes it or breaks it for me. The staff at Attic Records kicks ass. Can I say ass on here? Let's see. Lol. They are just super friendly and knowledgeable. Both times recently when I asked for things I didn't think they would know off the top of their head, they knew instantly what I was talking about and where. Let me describe both experiences because I loved them. Experience one (The quick and easy) I asked a employee that had his handsfull "Would you be able to tell me if you had a specific artist" He replies "Yes, who?" I am a little skeptical because it a Spanish artist and I always sound weird when I say her name "Kali Uchis" I say. He turns around to lead the way, again his hands are full "Yea right over here" moves everything to one hand, flips through the records and lands on her name. "There ya go" he says leaving me in awe. Hands full, didn't ask me to repeat the artist and just knew instantly. Experience two (Multi-tasking guy in the shadows) I went up to the register and asked the clerk if he knew if they had The Marias on vinyl. He starts to answer, looks over my shoulder at another employee (who is on the other side of the store, on the phone, activly answering a customers questions) this employee overheard me and was waving me over from across the store! Leads me to the back area, goes to the bottom shelf, goes through a couple rows and pulls out the divider that says The Marias, points and it and mouths "right here". Like what?!? HE WAS ON THE PHONE, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORE! Customer service is outstanding here. Makes me enjoy every penny I spend here. Speaking of pennies, the prices are really hit or miss. I have found a couple things priced a little higher than online stores, but I have lucked out and found a couple that were cheaper than anywhere I have looked. I don't mind the little price increase to support local especially when I find a cheaper gem every now and then. This place is a true record store and delivers on all accounts. read more

Been in here a few times and this is quickly becoming my second favorite record store in the Greater Pittsburgh area (after The Government Center); eclectic selection with most artists you've heard of, some you haven't, and a good deal of obscure gems and nostalgic titles that you may have danced to alone in your darkened bedroom in your pimply-faced youth. (Which is my way of saying I was delighted to find The Cruxshadows' Mystery of the Whisper in the aisles, albeit I was looking for Cold Cave, whose masterpieces were sadly out of stock). Only criticism: the bright fluorescent lighting and the cramped layout are the only disadvantages, and they do make the place feel unwelcoming - the staff and owners of this place could benefit from consulting with an interior designer to create a more pleasant sensory experience for shoppers. But if you can get past that you'll have a decent journey and find hidden gold in the aisles of this amazingly wonderful collection of vinyl and CDs. read more

Every time I visit the Attic I lose track of time and spend too much money! lol Wow, this record store is great. The owner and employees are super friendly and they know most of the customers by name. I heard a customer ask how long they had been there and the employee said 40 years! When you first go in the shop they have new releases, special record store releases, and bins of random used records for cheap. Just going through all of those sections took a while since it was so busy, but it's fun to browse! I found a Fleet Foxes record for $10 and the new Evanescence record (barely used) for $15! I remember the first time I went in, I asked where to find Alanis Morissette and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and they showed me the sections to look. Now I know where to browse for rock music. I haven't even ventured to the other side of the store that has jazz records, CDs, and honestly who knows what else. It is like a library of records. I have had great experiences every time I stop in. Try to go on a weekday, because people pack in there on a Saturday. read more

Stopped into Attic Records to see what they had. Quite the extensive selection. Picked up an album from The Clash!! My first Clash vinyl.

It used to be Pittsburgh's best record store before they started using Discogs to set their prices. Now you can get the same records for 3/4 the price without leaving your house just by using discogs. I still go to the Attic once a month or so. But I usually just do so to get inspired on what to buy from Discogs, which (NOW) is cheaper and doesn't require a drive. The Exchange is Pittsburgh's new best record store. Also, Target now sells records at lower prices than the Attic, so check that out, too. read more

The Attic was a good record store for decades. It's shameful what it's become. For many years this store was welcoming and relaxed, employees were knowledgable and friendly, and prices were reasonable and fair. Now they're intentionally selling customers fake, cheap, bootleg records for high-dollar discogs/ebay prices. Want a copy of a popular but out-of-print release? They may have it. But it's going to be counterfeit, bootleg, crap-quality vinyl that sounds like garbage, and that's if the correct music is even on it. But the best part is that they sell these illegal bootleg/counterfeit lp's for huge prices like $65 or even $100. And why??? Because they apparently have very little respect for their customers. So, not only will they sell you fake merchandise, they will rip you off as hard as possible while doing so. They know that some people will think the lp's are legitimate, quality vinyl releases, specifically because of the very high price tag. The employees at this store are knowingly and deliberately fleecing customers because they believe that their base of new vinyl collectors don't know how to tell the difference. Not only is this wrong, obviously. It's illegal. I've also heard actual conversations between employees in this store on more than one occasion about how to most effectively rip off the next record collection seller when they go to make their next house call. We're talking about employees openly having conversations in the store, in front of customers, about how to convince a seller that their records are worthless. It's sad that this absurd and embarrassing level of greed has gotten the best of what was once a good record store. It's also sad to think that their employees aren't smart enough to lower their voices when saying something so unprofessional. Ownership needs to dump the counterfeit records, bring the prices back into the realm of non-offensiveness, and replace the misguided ebay-obsessed employees with knowledgable and friendly staff, like the kind of people who used to be employed there; people who were happy to talk about music, not dollar values or the *size* of their *collection*. This store is becoming an embarrassment, and I would hope that the ownership, who are nice people, would rather be running a legitimate store than babysitting a group of Guy Fieri lookalikes who want to talk you into spending $75 on a bootleg copy of some dumb nu metal record that doesn't even have the correct songs on it. What is the point of visiting a record store that would intentionally sell a customer a counterfeit record for more than another store in town would be selling a *legitimate* good condition copy? I can't think of a reason, unless you enjoy being treated like garbage. read more

Easily my favorite record store in Pittsburgh. Let's get the few downsides out of the way first, though. Yes, the aisles can get cramped, especially with lots of people in the store (and it's always full of people). Yes, some of the shelves are packed so full that it's hard to get to some records (this is especially bad when a top shelf is packed--it's really hard to see what's there as a result). Other than that, though, the Attic rules. They have the perfect balance between new and used items, with a stagger selection of weird collectors' items, thorough back catalogs, and best-sellers. If they don't have it on the shelf, they can probably get it for you in no time. I never feel like I'm paying too much, either--tax is included in the listed price, so it's easy to grab a stack of LPs and pay an even amount. They constantly get eclectic selections in the "just in" section, too, so digging through those crates is usually a blast (even if I don't end up buying anything). The staff is friendly (and VERY Pittsburgh-y), and they also have a really extensive CD selection (though I honestly don't look there much). They've reorganized a bit recently and I think it's easier to find things in the store. And the Attic's genre organization mostly makes sense (unlike another much-loved Pittsburgh record store that always feels like it's stuck in 1972). So check this place out. Prior to an evening with Stolen Babies, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, and Devin Townsend at Mr. Smalls, I ducked into this treasure room of endangered media to squander some time and found that it mostly measured up to what I had heard and read. A number of years ago, a close relative gifted me some CD's and vinyl for Christmas, and they acquired them from this storehouse of sonic pleasure known as Attic Record Store. Upon skulking about the place, my only complaint about The Attic is that I felt some of their prices were a touch out of line. I saw used CD's that were not imports or out-of-print that were being sold at $17 and up. I almost bought Ian Gillan's Toolbox CD, which was just reissued and remastered two years ago, but passed on it since it was selling for more at The Attic than Amazon.com sells it for. The Attic's labyrinthine organization takes a bit getting used to also. Some CD's are lined up vertically in at eye level and others are above your head stacked horizontally. Therein lies part of the joy of your quest, however. With the advent of the internet, many people don't even bother to purchase hard copies of music any longer, so if nothing else, The Attic is keeping alive that aspect of the hobby musichounds howl in glee over: hunting down that one platter of ear candy so elusive, they nearly gave up on it. That is unless they find SOMETHING else they wanted while flipping through plastic cases and cardboard sleeves, something they never thought they'd see ever again, something they forgot was on their ever-expanding wantlist, taking in the musty, lusty aroma of old media all the while. One of the burghs best kept secrets. Jerry's gets a lot of attention, but the Attic is on par with the iconic Squirrel Hill store. The store is much more organized since a flood came through a few years ago, and they added new albums. Prices are reasonable, a little on the high end, but you won't know what you are in for until you bring it to the front desk. Lots of good stuff on the shelves. read more

This is the only vinyl/CD store you need to visit. The staff are always so friendly and willing to help find what you're looking for. I always find something new when I visit. The experience I had today really made me love these guys even more. They had something groovy playing (as usual) in the back section. I was looking at the record as it was spinning trying to figure out what it was. One of the employees noticed me, told me who it was and pulled it from the stacks like magic. He had held a copy back for his friend as well. I ended up getting something else, and decided to wait on the album. I got home and immediately regret my decision. I needed this record. I called the store and asked if they still had the copy and if they could hold it for me. The guy on the phone was super friendly and put my name on it. I absolutely love this store. My husband and I are big fans of collecting records and this is an excellent place to go. They have an amazing selection of all different genres and the pricing is definitely reasonable. The staff here is always friendly and extremely knowledgeable when you have questions. There's also a bit of a discount if you pay with cash instead of card.
