I ordered a carrot cake from here for my daughter's birthday & asked specifically if it would be made FRESH on SATURDAY AM!! Well, that cake was the worst carrot cake I've ever had in my life!! It was dry, stale, and tasted like an old freezer! The icing was also awful! You'd think that for $36.95 it would have at least been acceptable! Overpriced and not that good. King cake season I heard Atwood's was the best king cake in town. Always made fresh. I overpaid for a king cake that I waited 30 minutes for because I wanted to make sure it was fresh. It was the worst king cake I've ever had. Another time, Valentine's Day, the were offering boxes of chocolate covered strawberries. $30 for 6 strawberries???? I think not. read more

We randomly stopped in while traveling through the town. We wanted a sweet treat. I had no idea what we were walking in to, but I was extremely impressed. Display counters filled from edge to edge with amazing sweet treats! The prices were very reasonable. We all got our treats to go, but I would love to come back and dine in for lunch one day. WOW! What an amazing place! I had lunch there last weekend, sandwich of the month, tuna salad was one of the best I've ever had. The bread was delicious, perfect texture, and the lettuce was cold and crisp, the tuna salad was perfectly seasoned, not too much onion or salt. I also ordered a custom "teapot" shaped cake for my mom's 77th birthday - AMAZINGLY beautiful but also delicious. Stephanie helped me order the combination and was super friendly and gave great input on the cake/filling/frosting combination. So I'm driving home from Leesville and needed a cup of coffee and a place to stop to send some emails. And of course I have no idea if there's a coffee shop around being in CENLA which is unfamiliar territory. So what does any self-respecting Yelp Elite do. I whipped out my Iphone, called up mytrusty Yelp app, and searched for coffee shops nearby. And Bingo! That's how I discovered this place which I was happy to patronize to throw my money to a local establishment. S'Bucks don't need my bucks! It was a pretty big place with hundreds of treats to choose from, all of which looked beautifully executed and and were beautifully presented. They also apparently serve a full breakfast, but the only reason I know that is because I saw an older couple chowing down on huge plates of eggs, ham, etc. There was nothing on the menu I saw that mentioned breakfast. Picked up a great king cake during Mardi Gras. It was pretty good. Friendly service and a great selection of treats. Sadly, the treats weren't as good as they looked. I tried four desserts and thought they were all a bit unbalanced flavor-wise. Everything was super sweet and the nuts or chocolate or fruit flavors were overshadowed by all the sugar. The "peach" was the one I liked the most. It's sweet bread filled with a bavarian cream and covered in a sweet glaze. I would have liked it better if the fruit flavors (peach and apricot I think) were stronger, but it was pretty and took some work to make. read more

I was in town for a week and was craving a deli sandwich and Yelp pointed me to Atwood. I ordered a "build your own" sandwich. First things first, they charge $1 for a toasted sandwich(!!). Anyway, The sandwich was average and the bread was stale..I promise, the edges were hard..thank god I had it toasted! The meat was of good quality though and I liked the grainy mustard. The lady who was taking my order was a little confused, she couldn't seem to add a soup and a potato salad. On top of that they got my soup order wrong and brought out tomato basil instead of the queen's soup. Oh well! The potato salad was fresh, but very low on salt. Went for a late Saturday breakfast with my friend. Something happened today. It was like Biden was running the place. No one in charge. Waited 30 minutes for breakfast when someone came around with a small bite because 'the printer in the kitchen was running slow'. I was born at nite but not last nite. Awesome place for brunch on Saturdays. My favorites: cheese grits, biscuits and gravy, Omelets, fruit bowl I've never gotten Something I didn't like. I can tell my coworkers are big fans of the mac n' cheese, so that would definitely be a good thing to check out. I'd like to go back and check out their desserts sometime - of which they have very many. update: Had the tilapia + girlled shrimp over shrimp creole daily special. I really did no like the "shrimp creole" which was basically a bit of liquid with tomatoes, onions, etc. with small shrimp and spices. The tilapia was so-so. This place smells like heaven on earth. I have been going to Atwood's since I was child, I even remember the old location. The cakes are one of a kind I have travelled the world over and nothing tops Atwood's cakes. If you bring an Atwood cake home it is gone in seconds. On every occasion I make sure Atwood's cake is involved whenever I'm in Alexandria or close by. I sure do wish they shipped these cakes to California. Soon as I arrive in town I high tail it over to Atwood's and feast. They have amazing shrimp and grits as well. Honestly i don't know of anything that is short of amazing from this place. YOU MUST STOP HERE WHEN YOU COME. No questioners ask you will love every thing about this amazing beautiful place. The shop is clean and the sweet smell greets you at the door. I've sampled many things from this delicatessen. I've enjoyed the sandwiches, king cakes, and other pastries. They are edible. The gelato was delicious but I don't think it is a true gelato, it tasted like it had more milk fats like an ice cream. Their chocolates and candies are weird. The pralines' consistency is more like fudge and there is something in it that is off putting. pepper? perhaps cardamom? All their candies are like this, it's not interesting nor tantalizing, it's weird. And they have chocolate covered bacon. It is the worst chocolate covered bacon I have ever eaten. read more

Atwood's has been in Alexandria once the 70's. It began as a small pastry shop, but stood the test of time and is now a gem in this small town. There isn't another place like it in the area. I really like the look and feel of the new location. They have a very nice display of their pastries and gelato. Everything I've tried has been extremely delicious and professional looking. My rating is for the food only. However, I really do not like the customer service I've received here. The staff has been rude, pushy, and condenscending to me several times. I have called and gotten hung up on! A few months later, I was tasked with ordering a cake. I went to their website, and they have a form to submit inquires regading cakes. They did not state they would be on vacation or anything, so I sent in my cake request. They did not reply until 3 weeks later! No thanks!
