The other reviews are all accurately representative. I had the shrimp & grits...phenomenal!!! Didn't know shrimp & grits basically tasted like shrimp fettuccine...Mmm! And the pastries are extremely gourmet and run CIRCLES around Little Cakes With Big Attitude on Jackson St. The prices here are also much less compared to Little Cakes. I finally ordered one and it wasn't nearly as good. The packaging came all in separate pieces, so basically a DIY cake. It was all melted and my cake was smashed and the purple, yellow and green sugar bags were open and spilled all over the inside packaging so it was all sticky. The frosting was leaking. And yet I still paid the ridiculous price to give you the benefit of the doubt that my cake would be just as good and fresh as it would if I picked it up myself. I'll stick to paying $45 and bringing it home myself and enjoying a vacation while I'm there! read more

This is an exceptional little bakery. They have a relatively new store which is more of a bakery/cafe than just a bakery. I've heard that their soups and sandwiches are wonderful, but I haven't had the opportunity to sample those b/c they're not (to my knowledge) vegetarian (hint, hint, Mr. Atwood). They make their own gelato on the premises - it's to die for! The handmade chocolates are my favorite - my daughter likes the cupcakes and cookies. Good old Atwood's- a staple for donuts, cakes, and other baked goods. I love walking into Atwood's to smell their freshly baked goods! A friend and myself went here for breakfast after a long night of work because we thought their breakfast food would be awesome.... HA yeah right! It was horrible! The service was bad and the food was just as bad. We both had the breakfast sampler which comes with a biscuit, a side of "world famous" gravy, some bacon, and some grits. All of it was served at room temperature. The biscuit was raw in the middle. Everything was bland... Sorry Atwood's, I WILL NEVER come back here for a "good" home cooked breakfast. First: Best coffee in town. All the Starbucks in Alexandria are inside grocery stores, and for some reason their coffee is terrible. If you're in Alex and craving a latte, Atwood's should be your first stop. Second: Great bread and pastries. Yeah, they're a little pricy, but they're fantastic. The almond croissant reminds me of the amandines I used to get for breakfast when I lived in France. They're that good. (The plain croissants aren't as good, they're flaky but are too soft. They don't have the crispness of a French croissant). Their cracked wheat rolls are outstanding. I buy them regularly to serve with dinner. I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but the wife loves their chocolates and various sweet pastries. Third: Nice lunch destination. I think their soup served in a bread bowl makes a great light lunch. The sandwiches and wraps are really good, and the service is so quick you can get in and out in under half an hour. That's nice for a sit-down place. I've never had breakfast, because they stop serving breakfast at 10:30 and I have trouble getting up that early on weekends. Hey, I like sleeping in when I can. read more

Love this place! Delicious cakes, the baklava is to die for and they have such a friendly staff. The atmosphere is nice with open seating and soft music playing. They have good food for lunch including sandwiches and soups. I really love the broccoli cheddar soup, but I'm pretty sure it's soup du jour. read more

Clearly their expertise is all things pastry. The food is typically good but today, we tried the breakfast menu for the first time, although service was good, the food arrived cold. They had no problem remaking the order, but my wife decided she had lost her appetite for the French toast Normandy she ordered and wanted something different. This was not well received as "the order was already being remade" which we interpreted as "too bad so sad" the young lady who delivered that message clearly knew that we were frustrated by that and another server came to take a new order - so they recovered, but not without being pressed. This may very well prevent us from returning. We don't expect perfection but we do expect quality/commitment in the food, service and customer satisfaction. read more

We really like this bakery. Their petits fours are the BEST! Poured fondant is tricky and the Atwoods have mastered it. We get all our birthday cakes there and they can decorate it in any style you can imagine. I have not had lunch there but will do that soon. We had coffee and pastries mid-morning and it seemed a little confusing--you have to order your pastry from the pastry person the coffee from a different person. I can't even remember if we paid twice but it would be GREAT if one person could handle it all. Their King Cakes are divine! i shipped them out of state and received rave reviews! This past Tuesday my husband and I brought our grandchildren to this establishment because they love the hash browns and because my daughters and I have been here and the food was pretty good. However........Tuesday we were sorely disappointed by the customer service - well not customer service because there was none. There were no greetings despite the fact that there were two servers and two people in the cashier area. We sat ourselves at a table - and after 15 minutes a server came by to take our order. There were no warm greetings - only "here's the menu, I'll be back to take your order." Alrighty then......The server came back in 5 minutes, took our orders, picked up the menus and left. I kept waiting for a thank you or something, but nope - didn't get it. The order was brought to the table by another young lady who smiled and greeted us - yay! The order was correct, the food was okay, we expected the breakfast sandwich to be hot because my daughter raved about how good it was. But the cheese looked like it had melted and then cooled off, the sandwich was alright, the portions large enough that we both only ate half and took the rest home. And let me tell you! The next morning I heated the bacon and added more cheese, popped the croissant in the toaster oven and my goodness! It was good - better than the experience in the restaurant. We were disappointed and little bit angered by the fact that the server NEVER came back to the table! Never! Not once! I ordered hot tea and wanted more hot water but I sure didn't get it. My husband ordered OJ and wanted more, but oh well. To sum it up - no customer service, mediocre food - I'll skip this place for breakfast and it will be a long time before I come back for lunch! read more

I have been a patron of Atwoods Bakery for more than 25 years now. I have celebrated more birthdays and festivities with cakes and other baked goods from Atwoods than you could image over this period of time. Beautiful, extravagant cakes that lead my family here in Louisiana and Mississippi to call me the"Cake Lady". My family knew that if their was a family function, I was coming with not only something beautiful but also something full of flavor. Well this time has ended. Over the last few years, the quality and appearance of the cakes I've ordered has dwindled but I still went back. This weekend, I ordered a cake that was not what I now term "Original Atwood Quality". I refused to take the cake but had to have something for my function so I ordered an assortment of petit fours. While selecting, I noticed the fondant snowmen were smudged, the round ornaments were cracked and mentioned this to Mrs. Atwood. She simply stated "I don't know what that is on the snowmen" let me finish my selection and slid the tray back into the showcase. I purchased 3 dozen petit fours and was really disappointed when serving them because the cake was stale and the frosting crumbly. I had a wonderful ride with the Original Atwood Quality that so many of my friends and family grew to love and it was an awesome trip. The ambiance is gone and so is my business. I have always loved Atwoods sweet potato pies, me and my sister-in-law would fight over them. But last year you changed your reciept and not for the good. This year you ruined it! I mean really what's with the pecan's on top of the sweet potato pies! I come from Shreveport for these wonderful pies. You modified a reciept that was AAAA+ to something horrible! What an unexpected treat! I moved away from Louisiana a long time ago, but was visiting recently when my neice brought over a King Cake from Atwoods. Hands down, it was the best King Cake I have ever had. Before heading to the airport, I even squeezed in a quick shopping trip to purchase some to bring home to Connecticut. The King Cake flavors are both traditional and yet new! Unlike the dry or cakey cakes you may have tasted from other bakers, these cakes are moist and very flavorful. I will look forward to ordering these cakes in the future, as they also have a handy way to ship them overnight to those of us not able to pop in. I have traveled extensively and love going to pastry and coffee shops around the world, so my recomendation for you does not come lightly: This is def a "must-do" when visiting CenLa. I felt that the prices were acceptable, and that the staff was VERY nice and helpful. They have exceptional coffee, maybe from Africa? Anway, it is the perfect blend of bold and smooth taste. And...they give it away on Saturdays! My brother and I also spurged on a cinnamon roll. Yep, it was just as wonderful as you would expect also with a generous amount of cinnamon and the perfectly made flaky dough. There are lots of other things I didnt try yet including lunch items and candies, but will let you know what I fall in love with the next time I visit Alexandria. this place has great cakes, pastries, and sweet treats. my personal favorite is the brownie with walnuts on top and powdered sugar on the bottom. so good. they make an awesome death-by-chocolate cake that my family orders for every holiday, as well. the shop is pretty neat, with a sweet little sitting-area and gorgeous wedding cakes on display. the prices are a little more than your average sweet-shop, but you get what you pay for. read more
