Taking tea at Aubrey Rose Tea Room is a special-occasion sort of thing for me. It's the kind of place I bring out-of-town family members, arrange celebrations, or meet a friend for a once-a-year tea. It's not somewhere I go every day, but I love it as a special-occasion spot. The tea room itself is a lovely, feminine space full of antiques, and their mismatched china is charming. Their tea menu is extensive, high-quality, and always changing. The Afternoon Tea is delicious and surprisingly filling. Each item on the three-tiered tray -- the little crème brûlées, savory scones, finger foods -- is tiny, but there are so many of them that it adds up to a lot of food. I've never managed to finish it. They offer two seatings a day, and the Afternoon Tea is the only one you can reserve. They also have a Cream Tea, smaller and less elaborate but just as tasty, available on a space-available basis. They don't have a kitchen certified for gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan preparation, but I know from experience that if you call ahead, they'll do their best to accommodate special diets. They also host special holiday events -- a Mother's Day tea, and a season of holiday teas from late November through just after the new year. My one wish: I'd love the ability to reserve something smaller than the Afternoon Tea -- maybe a limited number of Cream Tea reservations, or a new "Parlour Tea" or "Petite Tea" option. Right now the only thing reservable is the big, elaborate option, and I'd love to be able to schedule a smaller treat for myself once in a while. I'm thinking of something I could reserve ahead -- so I could plan a day around it -- but that's smaller and less elaborate than the full Afternoon Tea. It's pretty. Yes. I adore going to tea rooms. While we were there, we ran into a few issues. I was there for a bridal tea. They ran out of large tea pots so took ours and replaced them with small. They didn't come by to refill them, and as we were a large party of 12... Not all the food seemed that "fresh" and was very scone/incredibly sweet heavy. Maybe I've been to tea in England too many times, but they even sweetened the clotted cream. The sandwiches were lackluster at best. Our reservation was from 11-1:30? As soon as 1 pm hit they were packing up our things. OK. That's fine. But why are other tables allowed to stay longer? Our main waitress was very nice and even helped take photos of our group. This place is "Superb" !!! It is very cozy, beautiful ambiance and delicious treats. Excellent service was provided by the very lovely Natalie & Dakota...Thank you !!! My favorites from the "savory plate" were the three sandwiches: Chicken Salad, Egg Salad & Cucumber, the cheese swirl and the Parmesan cheese toast. From the "sweet plates" loved the cherry scones with butter and the bread pudding cubes, topped with whipped cream and half a Maraschino cherry (see pics). We went on a Sunday afternoon to celebrate my Mom's birthday and I was afraid parking would be very scarce...turned out I was wrong, after circling once we were able to find a great spot and the "bonus", it was FREE....the meters are off line on Sundays and Holidays...Downtown La Mesa has really changed/improved tremendously over the years and we will definitely be back to try some of the other restaurants...Enjoy !!! read more

I have been several times in the last decade or so. A friend and I have a tradition of grabbing holiday tea every December and this has been one of the places on rotation, especially in the years since covid as Aubrey Rose Tea Room is one of the few places that have outdoor seatings. Each time we've come here making a reservation ahead of time. This year my husband and I made a special reservation for August and took all the mothers in my husband's family here as a Mother's Day treat (yes, in August), and I think everyone had a lovely time. We got to try a good variety of teas. The servers are all very friendly, and the food is as expected, with the amount of savory treats on the bottom, and the delicious soup served at the beginning, scones for the center tray, and desserts at the top. One of the things about Aubrey Rose Tea Room is that the desserts aren't super sweet. Oddly enough, both my friend and I aren't really into sweet items, so we either don't pack eat the sweet items or take them home with us. However, the amount of sugar in their desserts don't seem as strong as other establishments which to me is a positive. Not that it isn't sweet, but still enough for me to go "Oh, that's sweet!" Those scones too, with clotted cream is hard to beat. Always one of my favourites of afternoon tea. The sandwiches and the small puffed pastries are often mixed up a bit, and are always fun to try out - and generally my favourite since we both prefer savoury items. Inside is an array of tables, with decor and cute English items and tea placed in between tables. There are a couple bathrooms in the back, clean and nicely decorated. (Most afternoon tea places are nicely decorated. The others in hotels have typical hotel bathrooms, but the dedicated tea places have nicer bathrooms). If you're looking for a quiet atmosphere, outside is where it is at. I think I've sat outside most of the times I've been here and it is incredibly pleasant. The whole area where Aubrey Rose Tea Room is very quaint. Parking can be a bit challenging to find sometimes, as they have 2 hour meters, so you might need to come back and feed it some money, though that isn't always ideal, but there isn't much choice outside of metered parking in the surrounding neighbourhoods. Also, of all the holiday teas I have done in the Greater San Diego area, they are also the most affordable. There are still a few I have yet to go to, but this is permanently in our afternoon holiday tea rotation. If you enjoy afternoon tea, I highly recommend giving it a try. And if you have done afternoon tea before, it's not going to be at the level of any British palace's tea place, but it's pretty darn good. read more

They were incredibly busy and it was rather loud as every table was full and so many guests were so happy to eat some delicious food and some unique teas. It is a yearly tradition for my boyfriend and I to celebrate his mom's heavenly birthday with a high tea date. This is our third year and every year we've tried a new tea room. A recent tea with a now kindergarten girl did not disappoint. Packed full on a Saturday so noise a bit of an issue. Bookings give you two hours, so plenty of time. I booked a reservation for Mother's day weekend with my mom and sibling. We were escorted inside and brought to a table where they brought out their house Aubrey Rose Tea. They had a nice list of their teas which was unlimited. We tried 3 teas in total; our favorite was the Paris tea. The place is perfectly decorated and their tea sets were beautiful. My mom absolutely loved it. They brought out each of us a zucchini soup with a mini brie filled croissant. Followed by a filled 3 tiered server. They explained all the items on each tier. I would also like to say they were extremely accommodating with a nut allergy we had at the table!! In a different review I mentioned my top 3 tea rooms, the Aubrey Rose is my #1. Mostly because it really balances aestic and ambiance with good service and good food. The tea selection is fairly varied. Please plan ahead when visiting, some services overlap with the prepping of the farmers market so you may have to park a little further away. You can also take the trolley which drops you off about 2 blocks away, but it's a nice walk through the main street with plenty of shops to visit on the way. read more

The Aubrey Rose is more expensive than most tea rooms, the owner was not friendly at all , very little food served and the ambiance way below average given that other tea rooms here in SanDiego are decorated beautifully. That being said, there are 3 tearooms that I know are wonderful The Coral Tree Teahouse, Marleen's Tea and Cakes and the Brittania.The Aubrey Rose was an awesome Tea Room years ago but now with different owners, it has dropped to a lower level unfortunatly. read more

One of my favorite things to do is go to tea! I loved this tea room as they had fantastic service, plenty of fun seating options for all different group sizes, and they have a great many options of tea. I do suggest making a reservation ahead of time because reservations do fill up quickly. I love their grand teas as it comes with the pot of tea with unlimited refills and the tower for tea sandwiches, scones, and desserts. Their sandwiches were good, but I do wish there were more sandwich options besides the two main sandwiches. The rest of the sandwiches were more biscuits. The scones and clotted cream were stellar though! Their fruit options were a delight and very fresh. The desserts were probably my favorite as they were all light yet memorable sweet flavors and styles. I came here with a larger group of friends so I did not get to try all of the teas I would have personally liked, but every tea I had was still delicious. I did get to have the Aubrey rose tea and that was my favorite option of the day. I'll have to come back to try the options I was looking forward to! read more

Went here with 2 girl friends on Sunday. The decor is super cute and I love that they personalized your table with names of people in your party. Overall the service was pretty good a little slow but you're just sitting enjoying your tea so understandable. The food was good lots of sweets not a lot of savory. The CUTEST high tea in SoCal! Aubrey Rose has served its community for 21 years and it is still in my opinion the best high tea in town. The decor is so cute and tasteful, transporting you to a cute English manor surrounded by adorable English China. The high tea is $42/per person with preset items and every bit was delicious. You get all the teas you want to drink and the staff are beyond lovely. If there's no line, you can stay there beyond the 2 hour time limit and the staff won't rush you at all. They also have a wall of hats that you can borrow while having your high tea. The venue can sit up to 60 people so it is very spacious. There's plenty of street parking available but it is meter parking. So just be mindful when you come to put enough coins in the meter. Also, on Fridays, the Main Street is occupied by the local farmers market so you must relocate your car by 1:30pm or else you'll get a ticket/towed. But there's a huge parking lot right at the back of the coffee shop that you can park at where you can pay the meter 4 hours at a time (75 cents per hour) read more

Beautiful tea room with large variety and range of tea offerings, delicious filling afternoon tea, consistent and kind servers, and lots of space for a large group. I attended their morning afternoon tea for my friend's bachelorette and had the most fun time. The tea options are fresh brewed and all have distinct flavors that you are able to swap out and are served in stunning tea pots. The food offered may not look filling at first, but with the tea and good friends we all were very full by the end of lunch. All of the food is well made, flavorful, and pair nicely with the drinks. The servers were just great and answered any questions we had about the tea choices. They also came around often to swap drinks and clear away plates. Or if you are lucky, you could find some free street parking in the residential area near by. Overall, it was not hard to find a parking spot on a Saturday around 2pm. The place was packed with ladies dressed up with wonderful hats. Even the young girls were dressed up with hats and purses. It was fun to just see how everyone was in character for the moment. It did look like they could accommodate large groups as well. They have the tea of the month choices and also another menu you could choose from. If you are not sure what type of tea to have, you can ask for recommendations. They explain the items off of the full three tier and we went from bottom up. It might not look like a lot of food but I sure got full. All items were delicious (pastries and sandwiches) especially the corn chowder with goat cheese pastry they brought out first. We wished they sold that tiny pastry in a box. All staff were friendly and quick. One of our friends arrived late and they didn't rush us to get things started but started off with the drink of the month while we waited and then brought out our food when she arrived. What a fun experience!! I like that they have specific times to choose from for the tea room. They have a selection of different hats that you can wear during your tea experience! There are many different teas to choose from & they change seasonally. We were able to try so many different teas throughout our time there. I love that the teapot was kept warm on the table the whole time from a candle underneath it. They brought out cold melon soup to start which is seasonal as well and perfect for summer. I also appreciated that they put the rose folded napkins on your lap for you. They brought out a three tiered array of different foods. I really liked the savory pastry items. The second tier had fruits and scones on it. I am not a huge scone fan, but the rest of the table really enjoyed them. The top tier had different desserts on it. I wish there were more savory options as fruit, scones and desserts were very sweet. It was an overall wonderful experience and the service was great and they checked up on us frequently. I have been to many afternoon tea rooms around San Diego but Aubrey Rose Tea Room has impressed me for several of reasons: - They are open 4 days a week. Another tea house I know is only open 3 days. - They take online reservations. Other places do phone reservations only. - It is about than $42 for afternoon tea. Other places charge at least $10-20 more. After tip for 2 people our total came out to $110. - This is by far the biggest tea room I have been to. There are over 20 seats. This is a two hour dining experience. I arrived a bit late but they were still able to accommodate me. It is located on a main street in La Mesa with other neighboring shops. There is plenty of parking as there is a lot behind the building. However the parking around here (even on the street) is all metered so make sure you bring your quarters! Let's talk about the actual food and tea. There were so many choices of tea to choose from. We were able to choose 2 at a time and switch them out at any point. Our tray of assortments were absolutely delicious and so much food that we ended up taking to-go boxes home. This is the perfect place to go if you want to catch up with a friend over some light food and I can also see this as a great place to go and celebrate an occasion. read more

I felt as though the waitress really cared about my guest and I, and was incredibly accommodating to any of our requests. The price was good for what we got, and I would gladly go back again for such a wonderful experience. I went here on a Sunday morning with a friend of mine and we're immediately escorted to our seats. So fun little detail, they took our reservation, and created a special placeholder on our table. It's a little detail, but it was really fun. The overall design of the place, looks like grandmother's cottage. The tables were well spaced, everything was clean, and most importantly, everyone in there looked happy. This place surprise me by allowing us to have unlimited tea for our entire sitting. We were able to drink five different teas, and for a tea drinker like myself, this was absolutely special and extremely fun. The first course was wonderful cantaloupe slushy a chicken salad sandwich. The second course came with a wonderful variety of little cookies, sandwiches, scones, and desserts. With the exception of some small cheddar flavored scone/cookie, everything was very tasty. Went here because I was just itching to experience having a cute little tea party with my girlfriends, so one of my girlfriends secured a reservation and we even took her sweet 3 year old daughter with us and it was a BLAST! I love that there's always a prix fixe menu of delightful sandwiches, various pastries, and desserts and that they even go so far as to personalize a super cute name card with everyone included. Our littlest guest also had a fun time just munching on the fruit and simplified sandwich for her, so if you're thinking of taking younger guests, just do it! Their tea selection was also excellent and we stayed with the house blend, and loved the strawberry kiwi tea also. Would absolutely come here again for the vibes and delicious arrangements. Service is up to two hours and costs $45 per adult, reservations recommended (unsure if they allow walk-ins but there were a couple empty seats). Excellent selection of teas, I really enjoyed the Chaucer's Cup and Marrakech Chai, but all I tried were lovely.
