Intermittently for three years I've been bothered by excessive ear wax. At times it has…read moresignificantly interfered with my hearing. I researched the issue on the web as I often do and found the website of Fagan Audiology: https://www.faganhearing.com/. I was impressed by the material on the website. This August (2018) I called them and described my problem. I was told the cost for ear wax removal and a hearing test would be $100. According to my research, this was a price within the normal range for these services. I made an appointment for 08/27/18. I arrived early and so had time to read some of the interesting material in the waiting room. Among other things, I learned that there's a connection between hearing loss and dementia; I hadn't known that. When it was time for my appointment, Dr. Derina Boothroyd, examined my ears and confirmed wax blockage in both ears. She tried to take the wax out with a metal curette, but that caused me some discomfort so we went with option #2: flushing the wax out with a water-pik-like device. Kathleen, the friendly front desk person, assisted. It was very quick and painless. Afterwards Dr. Boothroyd had me dry my ears with a princess-telephone-shaped ear blow dryer. That was a quick process too. Next, Dr. Boothroyd had me sit in what looked like an old fashioned bank vault but was, when the door was shut, a sealed room to test hearing. This was a computerized test. I put on a headset so I only would hear the sounds coming from the machine. I held a clicker in my hand and clicked every time I heard a sound, even if it was faint. I was a little nervous, particularly after what I read in the waiting room. At the conclusion of the test, Dr. Boothroyd pronounced my hearing "normal." I was very relieved and happy. The cost was exactly as agreed on: $100. I think the whole visit took about a half hour. This is my kind of medical visit experience: short, successful, and a modest cost. As a general note, I'd like to say: good hearing is so important. When the wax blockage was at its worst, I was concerned about driving safely because the auditory source of feedback was diminished. Also, I love music, so it was such a pleasure to fully hear my CD collection and download collection again. If you have concerns about your hearing, Fagan Audiology might be a good place for you to find out exactly what's going on and what your options are.

Series of questions asked and answered. There is a young man set up at the front taking care of all these protocols. Then waiting area is nicely spaced. While waiting for my therapist I would watch the same young man from the front door go over and clean and sanitize gym equipment stations. He would flip a sign on each piece to show it had been cleaned. Bryan is my physical therapist. Very friendly. He spent a good deal of time getting to the root of the injury and finding the right ways to strengthen and improve my shoulder. He gave me home exercises to do until I return and advised to not over do it.

The actual PT care was fine, but after 3 sessions, I felt like everything I was doing there could have been done at home (no specialized equipment was used yet). When the charges came back at around $300/visit (roughly an hour long each), I could not afford to keep going. I had no idea it was going to cost that much per visit. I would say that if you have really good insurance or a low deductible, go for it because the staff are friendly and seem to really know their stuff. But, If you have a high deductible or no insurance, I'd seek elsewhere, as they were not transparent at all about their charges.

She explained there was some confusion because my practitioner had also gone on an unplanned extended leave. Which could account for some of my experience, but not quite all of it. Anyway, they took fantastic care of me after that. We finally did the tiny corrective procedure I needed and the doc was not shy about scheduling as many follow ups as remotely necessary. I even canceled the last one since everything was fine. I've been happy with the results since. Should have amended this a while ago. Bottom line: I'm glad I did it, but I can't give full marks because of my particular extended experience that probably isn't common.

After that strange appointment, I was more anxious about my vision. Then I thought to call and make an appointment with Casco Bay EyeCare in Portland. I'm a long time independent Medicare agent and have lots of Maine clients who are happy patients there. A week later, with little sleep and stressed out, I drove over three hours for an appointment with Dr. Amy Cyr. I entered their beautiful Old Port offices, hopeless and exhausted. I asked one of the front desk gals for a hug. Dr. Cyr led me into her office which was so clean, her equipment looked brand new and as up to date as could be. Dr. Cyr put me at ease right away and said she could help me. She spent over an hour examining my eyes from every angle, with the latest equipment that Mass Eye and Ear ER did not have! I had one of the worst cases of dry eye Dr. Cyr had ever seen, my eyes were a mess with irritation and thus the blurriness. I left the appointment with hope restored and deep gratitude. I immediately began a daily regimen of preservative-free eye drops in both eyes several times a day, which I continue to this day. My eyes retuned to normal within a week of my appointment with Dr. Cyr. On a follow up visit a few weeks later, I brought a bouquet of flowers for my eye hero, Dr. Amy Cyr and the good gals at the front desk. Largely because I'm very particular regarding initial adjustments when you get new glasses. I always feel new glasses will fall off my face and nine times out of 10 they're crooked. The glasses themselves might not be crooked, its probably me but nonetheless the situation needs attention. I wasn't sure what to expect going into my appointment because of covid. All the rooms were sanitized and I felt totally comfortable. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to try on glasses but they have a nice system where any glasses you try on, that you don't want, you put in a certain basket and they sanitize them. Dr. Gass is a miracle worker…read more After a fall on black ice last winter and injuring myself I tried PT for 6 sessions and they said oh just six more sessions even though I was getting worse, and I saw an Osteopath in South Portland who also made me worse during the second session when I told her she was hurting me and didn't stop until the third time I asked. It just seemed like I would need surgery or would have to live with chronic pain that was affecting my quality of life since no one seemed to be able to help me. Recently I saw Dr. Gass for a total of two thirty minute sessions (the first one was to undo the damage the previous osteopath had done to me along with an initial treatment.) Her technique was painless for me, very gentle, and I can't believe that weeks later I still am pain-free and just as mobile as I was before I fell. I may go back for a maintenance treatment if needed. Thank God for competent, compassionate healers!
