I've been to this spot a few times now since the ownership/staff has changed and I've had some great experiences. Most recently picked up a THEC on an everything and absolutely enjoyed it. The bagel was a bit overly salty, but this has only happened once in my multiple visits so I believe it was a one off experiences. Besides this the bagel was delicious (2 eggs 3 slices T Ham), fair priced, clean seating area, and the staff was very friendly. Great spot, will be returning! read more

I was looking for a bagel place in Sparta, saw nice reviews for Augie's, and gave it a shot. When you walk in, it's the bakery items which hit you first, all freshly baked and looking great. I ordered an everything bagel with vegetable cream cheese to go. I also had to order one of the Apple turnovers that were staring me down. Both were delicious! I stop in Augie's frequently for their everything or sesame bagels when I want to make a breakfast sandwich at home. I'm vegan and don't expect small town bagel shops to have vegan cream cheese or sandwiches, but the employees here are so kind and clarified to me that most of their bagels are naturally vegan, so I love coming to grab a fresh baked one. Every employee is so welcoming and friendly. It's the classic New Jersey bagel shop where they call you hun and joke with you. I love it here. Multiple times my dad has come later in the day close to closing and they have given or offered him many bagels for free. Everyone is generous and thoughtful and it's just a great staff. The bagels are always well seasoned and good. This is a wonderful shop! There are tables inside and counter seating as well, but on busy mornings it can get a bit hot in there. Usually I take it to go but you also can eat on the boardwalk by the lake. I will always support Augies! read more

Been to Augies a few times but I'm done after my last visit. To start I watched a woman pick up something up off the floor, throw it out, not wash her hands after, then grab four slices of bacon and throw it on the griddle for the cook. I then proceeded to watch at least three woman handle cash and food without washing their hands between interactions. Food safety standards are simply not in place or simply not taught here. I should have walked out then but I didn't. Mainly because I did not see any of them touch my specific order (but they did handle a bunch of them). Then there was my order two PEC on Everything Bagels (that's Pork Roll Egg and Cheese: translation to the native Northern Jersey people: you know, da Taylor Ham; $6.55 each) with an extra bagel nothing on it ($1.25) Based on the posted prices my order (cash price) should have been $14.35 plus tax let's call it $15.25. I was told $20. I told the lady "your math ain't mathing based on your posted prices". She was like" huh" then she said "Oh, I was thinking credit price....it's $19". We are visiting Sparta relatives. The wife stopped by to pick up bagels and ordered a few sandwiches. We are very disappointed with the sandwiches. All the sandwiches were very dry. No mayonnaise or mustard. And no lettuce or tomatoes for sub sandwiches. They were very salty as well. I thought the workers forgot about the mayo or mustard. But then I was told he might be the young owner. I tried to call at least to find out if there were any misunderstanding in ordering. Only get recorded messages that store is not taking phone calls. Never heard of it that businesses don't take phone calls during business hours. I can't justified to go back for more purchases if foods are not up to standard and service with no answering of phones. I'm not sure how I feel about Augie's. I came in for bagel before heading off to work for the day. Parking was a breeze in the dedicated lot. Walked in and it took a good while for someone to greet me then waited a bit more for someone to take my order. The shop was not busy when I stopped in so it was a bit awkward. I ordered a simple everything bagel with olive cream cheese. The bagel I received was a bit stale and resembled a roll. I would unfortunately find another place to grab a bagel. read more

They are extremely helpful and even the day of if I need an order they always come through. Prices are extremely reasonable and the amount of food you get, you can't beat it. Went in just to get two bagels toasted with cream cheese, one with bacon added. The lady who took our order was EXTREMELY rude. People were talking next to us and she looked at them and said out loud "if they weren't talking so loud I could actually hear you speak" overall she had a terrible attitude. After that we honestly just wanted to leave as it seemed like an inconvenience for us to even be ordering. We gave it a chance and I truly wish we didn't because we ended up with one bagel burned to a crisp and the other was toasted fine but the bacon was soggy and yellow? We ended up just throwing out the bagels, they truly were gross. The kitchen also looked absolutely disguising and there were so many flies flying around the bagels. One of the employees was pushing around the garbage pail and without washing her hands proceeded to touch the bagels after. Overall I would not recommend!! The bagels are so small that other bagel stores sell that size as minis. Also, the bagels are so moist that either they are not fully cooked or just don't know how to make NY metro area bagels. I would love this place to be fantastic as it's super close to home, but sadly it's just acceptable in a pinch. The service feels brash and rushed even when there are only a couple people in the place. I know the kitchen is not typically the pretty part of any food establishment, but that is compounded when part of it happens to be in the same space where customers order. There is something quite unsettling about ordering a bacon, egg & cheese and watching the short order cook bare-handedly grab a slab of bacon out of the fridge, throw a couple strips on the griddle, then crack a couple eggs onto the griddle without washing hands. Unfortunately when we want bagels and breakfast sandwiches, we now drive 10+ miles to get to Firehouse Bagel 2 in Hardyston. An oasis of satisfaction in the middle of mediocrity. I rate this bagel shop/deli as one of the best I have EVER been through. And I spend 60 to 80 hours a week on the road so I have been through a few. Staff of clerks are clean, friendly and professional. Which is key because they are the face of any deli establishment. I have never been on a line in this place and got irritated because a clerk was dragging ass. That is rare. Sandwich roster on the selection board back behind the counter is packed with so many different hero combos that even a deli noob can peg a hit-the-spot moment. Hero bread, which can make or break a shop, is a perfect crusty medium for the contents laid on. Insides are not to chewy not to thin. If I have a gripe...the rolls...meh...have had better. The bagels, however, are made on-site. Awesome. Rival bagels found in Great Neck. By the way Great Neck, New York is full of the jews. And they rock the best bagels. Better than the upper east side bagel variation. Those are over hyped now days. My fav off the board is "Little Aug's" and my old lady is on the "Every Day is Thanksgiving" rip. I used to go to Augie's almost daily. Augie is a great guy and personality. I went in today and ordered a bagel toasted with cream cheese on the side. After 10 minutes of reading the paper and drinking coffee I was wondering where the bagel was. Several other customers came and went with big orders. I was informed they had forgotten my order. Not normally a big deal, but this was the third time in about two months this same thing had happened to me at Augie's. I paid and indicated I would not be back. The excuse was that 'this is Sunday and we are busy". However when I put my order in there was only one other customer there. Maybe they need more help on Sunday mornings. read more

Great bagels and great sandwiches where there are lots of good choices. Augie's is a nice addition to the local scene. It gets a little confusing with the ordering and the picking up lines when it's crowded, but just chill, smell the smells and know that soon you'll have whatever your morning or lunch fix is and you'll be fine. Let me start by saying that I've never been to this establishment or tasted the bagels fresh BUT that's only because I live in Anchorage, AK which is where Augie shipped his goods and where I experienced the bliss of biting into a caringly crafted assortment of bagels. Even after traveling the more than 4,000 miles his creations still tasted better than any bagel available locally. Augie also gets bonus points for being so friendly, accommodating, and easy to work with while attempting to pull this off. As these were a valentines gift for a now satisfied Sparta native with a soft spot for good bagels, I also have to thank Augie for the assist. read more

Long wait to get your food. If you are a regular they will stop and talk to you and forget about the non regular's food. I forgot you have to keep asking for your food and just walked out today. If you are a regular it's great if you are not you don't need the frustration. Don't be fooled by all of the 5 star ratings probably the regulars being coerced for ratings. Pretty good deli! Finally a place that knows how to butter a bagel!! Unlike other places, they actually put a decent amount of butter on. The place is clean, the people are friendly, always busy but not too much of a wait. My biggest complaint is that they don't have the fresh brewed iced tea. Never waited 15 minutes EXACTLY for a toasted bagel with cream cheese. I walked in, there were people waiting for their orders so no one was in front of me ordering. Girl asked me what I wanted, and then cut me off to help someone pay, and then 2 more peope. Finally took my order, cut my bagel but never put it in the toaster! I watched her give food and ring up at least 6 more customers, then watched 3 everything bagel breakfast sandwiches out the door before I even got my measly toasted bagel. Finally I went up to pay, to give her a reminder, and she has to cut another bagel and put it in the toaster for me! It's in the toaster, I still haven't paid and I'm standing there. I went to augie's almost everyday when I had open campus in high school and I still go every time I'm home from college!! The staff is very efficient and friendly.
