The owner has been in town for his whole life so if you want to know what The Heights was like he can certainly tell you. The place is pretty big and has tons of cool things to see. I love looking around antique stores and this one was no exception. The owner was friendly and the atmosphere was welcoming. However, in terms of the items being sold I don't think they were worth the price. A lot of it was rusted or broken, given that it's older but the price should reflect the quality (ex. a $75 broken mirror was being sold). I'd still return to look around but they didn't have anything I'd personally be interested in buying at this time. read more

Rude! Don't even waste your time or money here. I stumbled upon this place because my usual antique shop is closed on Tuesdays. Immediately after walking through the door I knew I made a mistake going there. The interactions were off. First off I was not greeted by the man behind the counter even though he clearly saw me. The shop was completely empty besides me and one other man. I kept looking around anyway. Eventually found a few things I wanted to purchase and made my way back to the front. I waited at the counter to be checked out and was COMPLETELY IGNORED! I stood there where they could clearly see me. And waited my turn. I waited and waited with the things in my hands. The man behind the counter was making small talk with the same man from before. After some time he leaves the counter walks the man out to the door and waits there while I'm still inside. and At this point I felt it was on purpose. He never came back in. He stays outside till I leave. I put everything back and walk out where he sees me and starts to make his way back in as I got in my car. I was in disbelief. To make matters worse the other man is still there in his truck and has blocked me from getting out of the front parking lot. I was fuming. I managed to maneuver my way around and speed off. Never have I been treated with such rudeness. I frequent many antique shops all over the state looking for specific things to add to my collection and this is the worst interaction I've ever had. The overall prices in the shop are overpriced for their grade in quality. The antique items I wanted weren't cheap so you would think he wanted a sale but I'd rather hunt for those items and spend my money else where. DONT BOTHER WITH THIS PLACE. There are better antiques down the street. read more

This is one of the top antique stores in Houston. It's situated in an old house and has a lot of variety. I visited many eons ago, and then returned recently since I needed to kill some time before a game. They have a garage like building next to the house with metal signs and some furniture but mostly I remember is that its pretty warm in there during the summer. I ended up purchasing a couple of comic books, ones that you don't see very often. He only had 3, but I bought 2. I didn't even notice them until I was about to walk out the door. Price was fair and the service was friendly. The owner seems to be connected to either a realtor, or maybe a construction company because they are sometimes able to recover lost items from homes about to be demolished in the Houston area (which is where my items actually came from). As with many antique stores, him and his partner also search all over the US for collectibles and other antiques to bring back to sell in their store. read more

Walking on the trail nearby we noticed this antique store and dropped in to look. Wow! This is not your typical antique store - they have an extensive collection of old and rare books, antique, Art Deco fixtures like lamp covers, hardware, sinks, doors, windows, and at the moment lots of beautiful vintage Christmas decor. The store is much bigger than it seems from the outside and they have a lot of architectural salvage on display, as well as a huge selection of vintage ornate religious artifacts. Take time to wander through both buildings and their outdoor display area. The owners were very friendly and I was greeted by Sparky, the resident cat. Actually talked to one of the owners who told me they took this cat in after he was dropped in the area. He's living the good life, happy and healthy. That speaks volumes about the kind of people these owners are. Like I said, not your typical antique store where there are consignment booths and everything under glass. Very interesting items, so I took some pictures to show what they've got. This is my new favorite business in the Heights! Highly recommend! read more

Wow this place is incredible. The collection of lights is huge. If you're shopping for vintage pendant light check here. Many beautiful white pendant lights. There are beautiful oak wood furniture authentic and vintage. If you happen to also want to view the collections of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and other religious items , check it out here in the back end of the store. Thus place also have done stain glass. Stole my heart of some of the pieces they have. If only I have place for them . So many beautiful pieces so little place to display them. They have some nifty collections of medical and apothecary bottles which are marvelous to views. Then the old signs from the small to the big commercial signs. Nice picker paradise! read more

Driving along Heights Blvd., there are quite a few beautiful old houses to admire, but when you come to a front "yard" and porch littered with antiques, turn in. You're at August Antiques. The main house holds all manner of treasure, from old amber and clear glass apothecary bottles, to little pewter statues, paintings, and furniture. The main draw for me, however, is the prodigious collection of old and rare books. In the front room you'll notice the large editions of Dante's Purgatorio and Paradiso which feature engravings and illustrations by Gustave Doré, which are probably the most iconic depictions of Dante's masterpiece alongside those of William Blake. Antique barrister bookcases display old hardcover editions of, if not all classic, certainly unique works which would all look handsome on your shelf at home. I managed to obtain a nice 1870 edition of Shakespeare's works for only $20. I also saw several more Doré illustrated editions of Dante, Milton's Paradise Lost, and a collection of Bible stories. And this is all before you move to the back of the store where you'll find row upon row of leather-bound medical and legal tomes - a great gift for the doctor or lawyer in your life - cloth-bound and hardcover fiction, non-fiction, poetry, history, even gardening books. You really will find nary a paperback in the entire place; the books are there as much for their content as for their aesthetic appeal. There is even a section of miscellaneous books which have only in common their attractive bindings in art deco and mod designs. One of the most interesting sections is the impressive display of religious items, including a full scale confessional. Art and statuary of the saints and Holy Family are there in staggering numbers, as well as crosses and crucifixes, hymnals and missals, and a glass case of antique rosaries. August Antiques also features a garden area and a smaller house which has the more modern and motorized items like mixers and radios and the like. To properly inspect everything, you'd need several hours, and possibly a trail of bread crumbs. In the end, the name August Antiques is doubly apropos: firstly, because the bric-à-brac to be found here does indeed inspire reverence and admiration, and secondly, because without A/C and only a few fans scattered about, it gets awfully warm, especially in the month of August itself. Spend any length of time in the back, and you'll be sweating like a whore in church. Or at least one in that religious section, next to the confessional. read more

I'm not certain how many times I had driven past this place before I actually went in one day. What a great space, can't believe I'd never been before. The main house if full of really nice antique furniture. Think: really old carved oak bed frames and barrister book cases (I LOVE those with their glass doors-sorry to dork out a little) and schoolhouse school desks and the list could go on. As you walk through the house, you pass through rooms of rare books and religious artifacts. Um, there was a antique wooden confessional the last time I was there. They also had a room full of doors, windows, and other architectural items. The garden, which you could peek at through the windows as you walked to the back of the house, was chock-a-block full of outdoor items. Furniture, lawn decorations, pots. It was fun to walk through, but I was a little leery of critters. The final space was the smaller house. Not certain if it was the garage or maid's quarters originally. This shop had the "modern antiques." 1940s and 50s kitsch, not junk, really neat furniture (Heywood Wakefield galore) and knick knacks. I think one wall was full of old radios. The back room had odds and ends. Glass hurricane lamp covers, hinges, door knobs, ect. Um, two words of caution: Not air-conditioned. If you go in the summer (between April and November), be aware, it gets a little stuffy. I went with a couple of ladies who provided me with a hand-held fan...didn't really help. read more

There are two buildings, one with furniture, old books, items, decorative items, etc.. and one with more salvage materials such as doors, windows, hardware, etc.. Loved this place in The Heights area of Houston. Family-owned and operated, they travel all over the country - and as far north as Maine - to small towns everywhere to bring back finds. Eclectic assortment - and lots of it! - in an old house. In addition to the usual, there is a good garden and architectural section, as well as sections devoted to medical paraphernalia, religious items (lots of kneelers in various styles a number of which came from convents), and rare and old books. Spread throughout are lamps and lighting, much of which has been rewired. We bought a desk lamp for a new attorney - they were more than willing to switch out the shade and negotiate on the price. We were there at Christmas - lots of great old plastic Santas and snowmen that light up (and work). We'll be back! read more
