I sooooo appreciate a specialty market and feel very lucky they are in my neck of the woods. Produce is good quality and great selection of my needs. I bring a list of items to purchase and if I can't find them or figure it out, they are always kind and helpful. The store is small and clean and yes, while some things might be a higher price - I see this as a trade off to purchase items from across the world and conveniently located. August is a small and clean Chinese grocery store in Canton. Prices are slightly higher than the larger Chinese grocery stores in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. The owners keep things very neatly organized and the vegetables in the back of the store are high quality and fresh with some of the items wrapped in plastic. There is a stamp card for loyal customers to get a percentage off after ten stamps. It would be nice to have a larger grocery store like the ones in Madison Heights and Ypsilanti, but at least there is an option for Canton and surrounding area residents to get Chinese groceries without leaving town. read more

I was looking for Ahi tuna and nobody carries it raw and consumable. All have to be cooked. When you want to make your own tuna tartare you need the good stuff. I got spoiled with Noble fish. Honesty over greed. I purchased eight 5lbs bags of a particular brand of sweet rice. I paid $14.99 for ea. Totaling $119.92. I sent my grandson to pick them up. I later found out that they carried the same rice in 25 lb bags for $40.00 ea. I could have purchased two bags in saved almost, $40.00. I would have brought three larger bags and paid $120.00 for 75 lbs instead of $119.92 for 40 lbs. It's a shame some stores pick greed over customer satisfaction and honestly. I would have been a loyal customer for life as I have been using this sweet rice for more than 50 years. It has recently become more popular in the Midwest and is harder to find. Anyone who has grown up in the Canton Township, western Wayne County area will remember Koyama Shoten, which was a Japanese grocery and small book store that was in nearby Livonia. Sadly, that business is now closed after the owners retired. This Chinese marketplace fills the void left by this place very nicely. While the August Chinese Supermarket is not the largest by any stretch of the imagination, it more than makes up for it's smallness by being very well organized, and the owners clearly know what they have, and are willing to special order any items they don't carry on a regular basis. Anyone who's been in other Asian markets will immediately notice the lack of any smell or foul odors in this place, which was really surprising to say the least. This is a sign of how clean the place really is. August Chinese Supermarket carries a lot of different types of soy sauces that won't find in regular outlets like Kroger's or Walmart. They even carry Tempura dipping sauces, which really surprised me. When it comes to brand selection, they even handle Yamasa Soy Sauce that has been brewed since 1645 in Japan. The part I really like about this establishment is they have a balance of of Chinese, Korean, Philippine, and Japanese products. In fact, they also carry chopsticks, including the stainless steel Korean variety. So if you're looking to expand your culinary skills in the Far East, this is a great place to find what you need. read more

It was refreshing to find a Chinese grocery store in this suburb in the Midwest, where such ethnic grocery stores are slim pickings. Not just an Asian grocery store, but a Chinese one with many of the ingredients that you would find at a Chinese grocery store on the West Coast. For such a small store, they have a good selection of Chinese condiments, fresh Chinese vegetables, and a frozen meat area with many of the special cuts of meat used in Chinese cooking. My go to when I need authentic Asian products. I recently went in for a few items and was so impressed with how fresh the produce looked I walked out with a bag of bean sprouts and Chinese spinach. The store is small but I've always been able to find what I need and it is PRISTINELY clean. I hate peeling garlic for recipes and they always have fresh garlic already peeled on hand. Why am I living in a cultural black hole!? Downriver... can we please remedy this!? This place is another small gem. If you know anything about the Far East food trifecta, you'll also know that if you live in a place that has all three grocery markets, you'll know there is a vast difference between the three. Korean markets tend to be clean, with quality fresh fare, larger portions, but also expensive. Japanese markets also tend to be very clean, with quality fresh fare, small portions but very expensive as well. Chinese markets... dirty, fresh far, and relatively cheap. August Chinese Supermarket takes the cue from the cleanliness of the Japanese, the portions of the Korean, and the price point of the Chinese and makes it all work! It's small and obscure in the location but comparatively to H-Mart or 168 Market in Troy and One World Market out in Novi, for the size of the place, the price is distinctively great! In a quick fix for Chinese ingredients, this place is great! Especially since there isn't another Oriental grocery market within 10 square miles of IKEA. Great for pork bellies, Botan Rice Candy, and Chinese red bean bread buns along with your other Chinese ingredients from the fermented tofu to the dragonfruit laid out, makes for a very cozy experience! After a disappointing trip out to Livonia, my wife and I came to found out that this Asian Market is just a 1/2 mile from us. Wish we had come here first. First let me say, this is probably the CLEANEST and most organized Asian market I have ever been to. Hidden away in a little shopping strip, the place couldn't be any less obvious about what it is (sign outside says CHINESE MARKET). They have a variety of pan-asian mixes and condiments (the wife and I found the shrimp paste [bagoong] we were looking for here), desserts, and other basic Asian cooking necessities. A limited selection of drinks and produce. All of their meat is frozen, and this too is limited in selection, though if you are looking for anything pig related (from snout to uterus) you should be able to find that here (frozen of course). Prices are a little higher than a typical Asian Market, but then again, this is the burbs. Debit and credit card accepted. It might not have exactly what you need, and I would prefer a larger produce section (not much produce, but what they had was v. good), definitely no fresh meat (although frozen!), and the prices are a little on the high side. I was so happy to find this place. I didn't count, but it must have had at least 10 different varieties of soy sauce, maybe more. That makes me happy. Other reviewers are right about customer service. I was greeted by two friendly people and one woman offered to help me if I needed it. That alone gets an extra star. I greatly enjoyed the brief shopping I did here, as well as the pleasant customer experience I received from one of the ladies who work here who offered her help (in broken English) and personal opinion of what to purchase. I bought the curry paste on the rear shelf, a smaller package of rice noodles on the adjacent aisle as well as coconut milk and a huge portion of dehydrated seaweed flats - I spent ONLY 8$. This is going to, no doubt, make me a delicious curry and seaweed and rice noodle dish! Will return. May make a run by the "holiday market" across the street as well. My wife is Chinese, and she likes this place. We live about 30 minutes away and make a trip here maybe once a month (where she spends like $100 on groceries that I find appalling). But, from my perspective, this place is very clean and organized. Everything is always in place. They have a ton of stuff my wife says she can't find anywhere else (as far as local box stores go). She usually loads up on frozen dumplings, noodles, meats, and an assortment of sauces. I tend to try some of their unique candies and fruit drinks, as well as Tsingtao beer. It's definitely not the place a common American would shop, but there's a Kroger down the road for that. I love coming here!!! I'm a huge fan of Dim Sum and they have huge freezers stocked with just about any kind of pork, beef, and other kinds of steamed buns. They not only specialize in Chinese food but also Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, and some Indian goods as well. The produce, fish, and meats selection is clean and well lit. Not at all what you think of when you'd go to a foreign market (in the Metro-Detroit area anyway). The staff are kind, friendly, and don't look down on you if you look over your head. I'm constantly asked, but not hassled, if I need help finding anything. This is just a great place to visit on the weekends to pick up spices, hard to find produce and fish. I would strongly suggest visiting the store on the weekend. The Ford rd. and I-275 interchange is a real nightmare during the work week. The store itself may look small from the outside, but it is packed with all those delicious hard to find Asian goods. The prices are also very good and well worth a trip. What more can I say.... I can find all the ingredients I need to make his childhood-favorite dishes, or to try out a new recipe. I love the selection of fresh vegetables that are available, as well as the unusual meats. When I need salted duck eggs, or four different kinds of tofu, or tapioca pearls to make bubble tea, I head straight for August Chinese Supermarket. August can be hard to find - on the north side of Cherry Hill Road, just west of Lilley. It is in a strip with a Chinese massage place and a Thai restaurant. I have been to this store many times, and each time I am blown away by how absolutely clean and organized this store is! The quality of their products is reflected in their prices--you can't expect very cheap prices for items that are well and fresh. I have met the owners(a couple) of this store. The husband is from Taiwan and he is super friendly and always trying his best to put the best produce and meat on the shelf. The wife is from Shanghai and she is usually the cashier. My mom used to shop at evergreen market religiously, but we recently moved to Livonia so I went on Yelp to see if there was a closer alternative, after seeing the reviews. I brought my mom here, and she absolutely loved it and so did I! The place is so clean and organized and it doesn't have the weird smell that a lot of other Asian markets have. Very small but varied Asian market. Hidden in the corner of the small strip mall across the street fr holiday market on cherry hill road. It is indeed very clean inside with well organized shelves. Good selection of items. Although I grew up eating Asian food I never learned how to cook it so going into an Asian grocery store I feel lost :/ my helplessness and lack of time restricted my purchases to some soy sauce, noodles/ramen, snack chips & cookies, and a barbecued pork impulse buy. Right before the checkout line there's a couple of racks with freshly baked Asian pastries & buns, BBQ pork, roast pork, and roast duck, which surprised me considering how small this place is. impressive selection of goods! the tapioca bubbles were out of stock last time I went, but the staff is always nice to me! its a small store, usually well stocked! You can get small amounts of vegetables here, good enough for a serving. The snacks are very good and its fun to try new ones once in a while! My favorite buys are the tapioca bubbles, the custard buns, and the aloe drink! (i have a bit of a sweet tooth haha) Next time im gonna get the high quality short grain rice! This place is great. Like everyone else has mentioned, it is very clean and well organized. My bf and I stopped in to pick up some things for sushi. It was our first time making sushi at home so we were a bit unsure of the complete process. The woman running the cash register was extremely helpful! She made sure we had all the right tools and ingredients. She was very sweet. It was nice to have that kind of customer service. The only downfall was that they only had frozen meats, nothing fresh. Holiday market across the street had the fresh sushi grade tuna we were searching for but they for sure didn't have the variety this place does for everything else. This is the best local Chinese market, folks. You'll have to journey out to Ann Arbor for anything better. While the selection of products could be larger, the market is making the most out of its space. It's extremely organized and clean. While the prices may be beat by some of the markets in Ann Arbor, they're the best I've seen in comparison to those of other local Chinese markets. I made a mistake in acquiring ingredient directions for Chinese cuisine online and the woman working the cashier was very kind in assisting me and telling me what general ingredients I would need for the dish.
