August Moon is an easy to overlook gem. This is true physically, as the building is tucked away in a curve of a road with few landmarks as it winds around Cave Hill Cemetery. Outwardly it seems almost an office building, but inside it opens to a surprising amount of natural light while the sun is out, and the advantage of its bend in the road presents itself as a "backyard" of vibrant trees and other greenery between the restaurant and that section of Beargrass Creek. This is true figuratively too, as the title Chinese Bistro implies to so many very specific ideas of the cuisine and expectations of the experience. A lot of the items on the menu are exactly what you would expect from any good Chinese restaurant. It's easy to go to August Moon with a specific idea in mind or an expectation you've seen its menu before somewhere else and don't need to study it, but you will overlook the surprises and many of the dishes that truly make August Moon special. The staff is always friendly and usually helpful in pointing to dishes you might miss at a glance. While they can tell you that every dish is special, keep an eye out for the section up front on the menu called Specialties. I have found the Specialties section particularly fascinating across my trips to August Moon. The descriptions of some of the dishes sometimes sound like the most Americanized dishes on the menu and yet the flavors and plating and personality of those dishes are so distinctly Chinese in ways that I have a hard time to describe. Those are the dishes that can feel the most home cooked. Those are the dishes that best remind us that great food is often about fresh ingredients, that the freshest ingredients are often local and seasonal, and that the great cuisines have always adapted well to local and regional ingredients. There's more to Chinese food than just the ingredients we Americans often stereotype it to, and August Moon says so much, delightfully, in its dishes, especially its Specialties. Also, August Moon is open year round (it comes from the other meaning of august as in "respected and impressive"), but it did amuse me to want to write this review in the month of August.

Elevated American Chinese dishes! August Moon has a large free parking lot. Some of the food at August Moon reminds you of your favorite Chinese takeout places. However, the quality is far superior. I love to start with the chicken spring roll with hot mustard. For second course I enjoy the soups: Hot & Soup, Egg Drop, or Won Ton Soup. You will notice the quality in these soups for sure. So many entrees are wonderful, but my favorites are beef (or chicken) and spicy sesame+hoisin sauce or Mongolian beef. The entrees are large, so you share or have leftovers for another day.

We went in for dinner on a snowy evening. Nice and quiet which is different as it can get loud when they are crowded. Excellent wine and cocktail menu. We had starter of beef satay. Meat was tender and grilled with a tasty sauce. I had shrimp in spicy basil for entree. Large cuts of vegetables and good size shrimp. The server was attentive and polite. Such a wonderful place to go. Also good take out of you would like!

I ordered the Grand Marnier orange chicken and a grilled chicken with mango and passion fruit reduction- both unique and delicious! Great flavor and wonderful service! The entrance is decorated with all the framed awards and newspapers they're featured in. The beef had strips of fresh orange zest throughout the dish!

The spring rolls are actually just fried egg rolls. Food is bland and unappetizing. There's a reason this place is empty when you visit.

Family dinners are available as well. I enjoyed my flavorful wonton soup, ate plenty of sweet and sour chicken, took bites of the Mongolian beef, and sampled most of the dishes around the table. I realize now that I didn't snap photos of everything! Service was attentive and friendly. Plenty of parking. I'm excited to return with my family.

I will never come back to this place…read more Let me start by saying I used to love this restaurant. It was one of our favorite. But now, it's on our list to never eat here again. It started with me placing an online order. This is new on their website while I was looking at the menu. I figured this would be best than calling the restaurant. How I was so wrong. I placed it with a 30 minute window. Ordered at 4:44 to be pick up at 5:14pm. I showed up to the restaurant at 5:03pm. There was about 4 other people at the counter. One person just placed their order, another person said her mom called to place the order but wasn't sure when it would be ready. They told everyone 20 min. I showed my ordered and they were going to be me 20 minute. I said I placed my order 20 minutes ago. Ok so I waited... Another lady came in and said that she placed her order around the same time online. Her order number was 140 and she had a long receipt with quite a lot of items. My order was 148, somehow. By the time I asked what's going on with my order at 5:15, they said they go by the order number and they're on 138. I don't think they processed my order until I arrived at 5:03pm. It took until 5:39pm before I receive the order in my hand. I only had very few items, one of which was an order for combination lo mein, plain mantou, shrimp tofu and wonton noodle soup. Mind blowing because I paid $50. The online system also charge a $1 fee, which I did not know about until I saw the receipt. Which would had been fine if my order was done in the time it was promised. Now, the staff was not the most friendly either... the person that handed me the bag almost dropped it because she put it in my hand, didn't say a word and turned and walked away. They cannot be any more rude than that. I was sweating profusely and shaking while waiting for a very long time while I am pregnant and nauseous. Now here's the review for the food. It was not good. We have had some on and off with their food and we haven't been back for a while so I wanted to give them another chance. But their lo mein was soo salty, and they used pad thai noodles. The wonton noodle soup was small container, so bland, literally no flavors, and the wonton tasted so bad. They put really hot tofu that was deep fried in styrofoam container that it put a hole through the container. So my paper bag was soaked and wet within the 6 minutes drive home. The mantou was so tiny for $4.5. Not worth it. All in all, the 4 items that I ordered did not worth the $50 for almost an hour wait, not worth my time or money. I wouldn't have eaten the food if I didn't already paid. Had I not already paid online, I would just had left.

Very small, only like 4 tables, so this is very much more for takeout. We didn't call ahead for our order, just ordered right there at the counter and our to go was ready in less than 10 minutes, and during Friday evening dinner rush when they were very busy. Woman behind the counter was so nice, made sure we had everything we needed, and you can see the cooks in the kitchen making your food. I usually get the chicken dishes. I got General Tso's this time. What I love: the chicken is fried to order so it's super crispy and the sauce is so flavorful. I feel like other places the sauce soaks into the breading and it gets a little soggy, but not here. Their crab rangoon is perfection. Other places is way too sweet with a few flecks of crab and is more like a cream cheese wonton. Theirs is generously filled with crab, and it's savory. I also love to get a side of lo mein, which had a great garlic flavor. You get so much food. I got a combination dinner that comes with pork fried rice (amazing) and an egg roll (crispy and also amazing). It's a nice deal. If you need Chinese takeout, this is where to go.
