[[HIGHLIGHT]]Group of 6 of us dined here on a Saturday night and the empty dining room around us went from nearly empty to nearly filled up in a matter of a 1/2 hour.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Couples, families, and groups of friends entered and many appeared to be regulars.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We started with drinks and I chose a German reisling and another one of our group had the pineapple infusion martini and declared it a winner. All of the waitstaff were amazing at making sure drinks were filled and orders taken during a very busy dinner hour. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Restaurant is cozy and welcoming with large windows overlooking a meadow and vibrant wall art elsewhere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Noise level is mild and we were able to easily have conversations at our table.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Food was delicious and appealing. We started with chicken spring rolls and soy sauce, sweet and sour, and hot mustard condiments. I selected ground lamb with eggplant and basil as my entree with fried rice and it was tender and flavorful with a mildly sweet gaminess and not even the least overpowering. Portions were generous and we each took 1/2 of our orders to go. August Moon is an easy to overlook gem. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is true physically, as the building is tucked away in a curve of a road with few landmarks as it winds around Cave Hill Cemetery.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Outwardly it seems almost an office building, but inside it opens to a surprising amount of natural light while the sun is out, and the advantage of its bend in the road presents itself as a "backyard" of vibrant trees and other greenery between the restaurant and that section of Beargrass Creek.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This is true figuratively too, as the title Chinese Bistro implies to so many very specific ideas of the cuisine and expectations of the experience. A lot of the items on the menu are exactly what you would expect from any good Chinese restaurant. It's easy to go to August Moon with a specific idea in mind or an expectation you've seen its menu before somewhere else and don't need to study it, but you will overlook the surprises and many of the dishes that truly make August Moon special. The staff is always friendly and usually helpful in pointing to dishes you might miss at a glance. While they can tell you that every dish is special, keep an eye out for the section up front on the menu called Specialties. I have found the Specialties section particularly fascinating across my trips to August Moon. The descriptions of some of the dishes sometimes sound like the most Americanized dishes on the menu and yet the flavors and plating and personality of those dishes are so distinctly Chinese in ways that I have a hard time to describe. Those are the dishes that can feel the most home cooked. Those are the dishes that best remind us that great food is often about fresh ingredients, that the freshest ingredients are often local and seasonal, and that the great cuisines have always adapted well to local and regional ingredients. There's more to Chinese food than just the ingredients we Americans often stereotype it to, and August Moon says so much, delightfully, in its dishes, especially its Specialties. Also, August Moon is open year round (it comes from the other meaning of august as in "respected and impressive"), but it did amuse me to want to write this review in the month of August. read more

Both were full of flavor and not too sweet. The goat chees, crabmeat won tons melt in your mouth. They are probably the only reason I would return. We ordered the roasted hosin duck, which lacked flavor. We also ordered the mongolian style spicy beef, which was also just ok. For the price, I'd rather get takeout from a small chinese restaurant. We also went on Valentine's Day, so I expect it to be busy, but the service was especially slow. Our servers switched and people around up were being checked in on much more often than us. I love to start with the chicken spring roll with hot mustard. For second course I enjoy the soups: Hot & Soup, Egg Drop, or Won Ton Soup. You will notice the quality in these soups for sure. So many entrees are wonderful, but my favorites are beef (or chicken) and spicy sesame+hoisin sauce or Mongolian beef. We were asked by a friend to join her for dinner at August Moon. She is local to the area/immediate area. I learned why it is a favorite spot. The food is delicious. The bistro atmosphere far surpasses the Chinese buffet vibe. There are so many menu items it is difficult to choose! Definitely make reservations. Come prepared for a leisurely dinner. This has long time been one of my favorite places to eat in Louisville. Located just outside of the Eastern Parkway area near Bardstown road and off Grinstead they bring you in with their ambience and scenery, but you stay for the Goat Cheese and Crab Rangoon egg rolls. These are hands down the best thing to order here. I always order a vegetable spring roll and then share the spicy chicken and vegetables with a friend. Trying to expand on the restaurants we get delivery from, my mother-in-law and I decided to get some Chinese food from August Moon. I have passed this restaurant tons of times -- it was about time I tried its food. And it was just OK, as the three stars denote. I started with the egg drop soup after seeing it mentioned in so many reviews. And it was ... OK. I liked the flavor but the egg whites were in a big clump, which wasn't very appetizing. For my entree I got the beef with spicy sesame in hoisin sauce. I liked the hoisin sauce, but the rest of the dish wasn't my favorite. The beef pieces seemed to be off cuts of meat that were too large to comfortably pick up with chopsticks. They were tough and too chewy. My MIL got the shrimp and vegetables. Loved the large shrimp and veggies, but the sauce was watery thin. I'm up for giving August Moon another chance -- perhaps eating in rather than getting delivery. I've also heard great things about their cocktails. But if I eat with August Moon again, I won't be getting these dishes. read more

They don't have a menu written in Chinese and we were not certain of the translations. So the server asked if we'd like some who knows the menu and speaks Chinese could help us. Yes! An older, rather tart lady came to the table and immediately told us "the waitress can speak English, you can speak English, why do you need me!" Someone told us that she was the owner but I cannot imagine that's true with her rude demeanor. We supply said sorry to bother you and placed our order ourselves. Ribs were ok. Chicken skewers very dry. The other 5 dishes looked and tasted roughly the same, all with the same brown sauce. Nothing special at all and not much that resembled authentic Chinese food. Big disappointment for us tonight to entertain our guests visiting from out of town. Next time we'll try to pick somewhere more friendly and with better food. No one came back to ask how the food was and service took an extricate amount of time with our server disappearing frequently for extended period. They can and should do better. This place is such a hidden gem. It's a quiet little place, and the service is always excellent. I've tried a few different things here, and everything is a hit. My favorite menu item is the sautéed beef with peppers and onions. The beef is incredibly tender and melts in your mouth. The veggies were chunky and fresh, cooked just enough to still be nice and crunchy. The dishes here are also consistent, from my experience. I arrived during lunch time (weekday) and they were bustling with both dine-in and take-out customers. It took a while before it was my turn, but I didn't mind. COVID restrictions were recently lifted for restaurants and apparently there's a shortage in the workforce. The one employee responsible for seating customers and handling take-outs was clearly working as hard and fast as demanded, and with a smile and great attitude. I ordered pot stickers / pan fried dumplings, chicken spring roll (they were out of vegetable spring rolls), and singapore vermicelli noodles with shrimp and chicken. The pot stickers tasted satisfactory and the sauce was OK. The chicken spring roll was different for me. I normally stick to vegetable. The roll was plenty filled with shredded chicken, but I doubt I'd order again. The singapore vermicelli noodles was prepared with curry, which I believe adds some spice. I don't really care for curry (and I knew that at the time of ordering, but took a chance anyhow) and my mind wasn't changed after eating this dish. I prefer spiciness, but this particular curry spice blend had a low level of heat. While waiting for my order the employee offered me a glass of their house made Mango+Peach iced tea. It was simply delicious and refreshing and needed no sweeteners. I was also offered a small cup of their freshly made sichuan style hot and sour soup. A M A Z I N G!!!! It's been many, many years since I'v eaten hot and sour soup and after tasting the chef's fusion of delightful flavors and textures in this soup, my next taste (bowl, please!) will be in the very near future. Although I wasn't blown away with everything I ordered, I will return to August Moon. I finally got my chance on Christmas Eve, since B and I stayed home and decided to enjoy a carry-out Chinese meal. Overall, I think this spot is alright. Nothing was bad, at all. Everything was pretty tasty. But, after trying the Egg Drop Soup, Goat Cheese Crabmeat Wontons with Asian Salsa, Chicken Spring Roll, BBQ Baby Back Ribs with Hoisin + Honey Glaze, Spicy Chicken and Roasted Peanut Stir Fry, and Regular Fried Rice, I can tell you I would be just as happy grabbing carry-out Chinese food from any other spot that I've tried. Nothing was particularly special, and our meal cost more than it would have from other locations. The only item that semi-disappointed me was the wontons. I had expected to love them, but regular ol' crab rangoon from any other spot are way better. Everything else was fine, but nothing to write home about. If you're looking for a nice sit down spot for Chinese, I think August Moon is a fine spot, but if you're looking for a carry-out meal, it's not my number one choice. read more

Ahhh, the simple things in life are always the best. After a stressful morning, I decided to treat myself to lunch. Lately I've been craving the wok-fired grouper here. It's sooooo good. Layers of flavor, crispy yet tender fish that flakes away on your fork. Veggies such as carrots, broccoli and other yummy items like snow peas, baby corn and little mushrooms. So fresh! So beautiful! Only $20! The highlight is the delicious sauce. Pepper? Hoisin? It's a lovely mystery..hints of ginger? Hmmm. Only years of skill can create such a sauce. Huge portion. Most times I can only eat half then take the rest home for another meal. The meal includes rice...the brown rice is perfect. Fluffy, yet a slight, al dente crunch. Simple. Divine. This dish is something I could never make myself. It's next level. I literally closed my eyes and took in the heavenly aroma before I ate a single bite. Wow. Talk about stimulation of the senses! I slowly sipped on Korbel champagne, $7. I felt like a princess at a feast. We are so lucky to have this restaurant in Louisville, as it would easily meet the expectations of big city dwellers in NYC or LA. I used to go here a ton in the late 80's and 90's. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this place is still excellent! The decor hasn't changed much and that's fine by me. The place has an nice view and a great open dining area. Portions are HUGE and fresh! Think American Chinese, but upscale. I came here because I was craving a Malaysian curry, and I regret that. This place smelled great when we walked in but I should have known by their large menu that it wasn't going to be good. We started with the minced lamb lettuce wraps, they were okay but lamb is very greasy and on top of the natural grease the food was very saucy so lettuce wraps just didn't make sense. This should have been served with or over rice. I didn't even take a photo because it was so sloppy, and this was the best dish of the night. Then we got the Malaysian curry and duck to share. I used to live across the street from a Malaysian restaurant in NYC and I've tried many different dishes in different restaurants, but I've never had one curry this bad. It was gritty with an awful flavor overall. The most vile thing I've ever had I had to ask for chili oil to drown it in just to get down a few bites. The duck was just okay but for 25 dollars it was a little dry and could have been a more complete dish than just a half duck on some green beans. Overall I probably won't return and will just stick with my regular takeout spot when I am craving Asian flavors. My advice to the kitchen would be to cut our half the menu and focus on a few dishes that will actually work well. read more
