Rated 3.5, but I can't give 1/2 stars. Not many Chinese quick service restaurants downtown, but this one is quick and near my work. The buffet is back open, so I popped in for a Togo buffet. The quantity of items was smaller than pre-COVID, but all items were there. I think the prices have been raised, and it was $8.50 or so for the buffet Togo. You are given a styrofoam container and then can also do soup at the end of the line. Items include fried rice, lo mein noodles, egg rolls, pork dumplings, general chicken, honey chicken, chicken and broccoli and a few more main dishes. They didn't have their shrimp or green beans when I last visited. Items were fresh and my favorites from the buffet are their soup, pork dumplings, general chicken and honey chicken. This was the first visiting this place. They have carry out service and a "buffet."Their buffet consist of 6 or 7 items. The lady tells me it's only a 2 trip buffet only and if I waste it's only a 1 trip visit. I never heard of a buffet that tells you only 2 trips only. When I asked for water they looked at me like I was crazy. When they give you hot and sour soup they give you a Dixie cup of soup. Their food was poor to tasteless. Over priced for what they served. They aren't really in the business of customer service but they are in the business of having their patrons leave full and ready for a nap! I have been a fan of Cheer King Star for years. In my opinion, it's the best downtown Chinese joint open for lunch. We typically do the buffet, which costs less than $6. DEAL!! You can eat in (and go up for more as much as you want) or you can get a to-go box. Typically, I get the to-go box, filling it to the max. I will say, they have a limited buffet, having maybe 10-12 items, with the addition of soup, but I think everything on their line caters to most people. Not to mention, because their buffet is popular, almost everything on the line is fresh during peak hours. However, if you don't' like anything on the buffet, they do have a full menu of dishes you can choose from - including crab ragoons, which is one of my favorites! If you go before 12, typically there isn't a line. Between 12-1, it can vary based on the day of the week and the weather, but for the most part, there might be a 5 minute or so line. You get the seasoned professionals who know what they want and move forward and also some newbies who take a little bit longer. Overall, a cheap and filling lunch downtown. I wish I lived closer to downtown because I think this would be my go to take out Chinese place. I was pretty impressed! They had dinner combos which is always appreciated with nice pork fried rice, a really hefty and tasty egg roll, and your choice or a main dish. I got the sesame chicken. The chicken was nice and not stringy and the sauce was thick and sweet. Their proportions were a good size too - not overwhelming, but definitely enough to feel pleasantly stuffed. The place was quiet and clean. The food came out with just enough wait so that it didn't feel like the food was just sitting getting cold and gross under heating lamps. What can I say, I absolutely adore this little place. It's hands down the best Chinese in the city. The food has always been fresh for me whether it be the lunch buffet or dinner. They keep it clean inside and the kitchen is entirley in view. Their employee, Hao, I believe, is his name, is an all star. He takes orders, cooks, waits tables, and delivers. He's nearly a legend, my friends and I call him The Ghost because he could drive to you house, deliver your food and be gone before you ever saw him. Like another reviewer said, their Singapore Chow Mei Fun is killer. It changed my perspective of what I considered, little "run of the mill" chinese joints. This is no such joint. Don't take my money when 5 people are in front of me then expect me to carry a tray for 5 minutes and create a cluster of a second line so that when you finally eat you have everyone's crotch in your face. Cheer King Star utilizes Szechuan, Hunan, and Cantonise styles to create the items on their extensive menu which is all available for delivery or carry out. While their meats are sometimes tough (skip the teriyaki chicken appetizer), their sauces are addictive. I especially love the sauce on their bourbon chicken as well as their sweet and sour sauce. Delivery is free on orders over $10.00 and they are open until 10pm which is well after most other downtown delivery options are closed for the night. I checked their rating with the Louisville Health Department and both of their 2011 inspections were rated "A". I love love love Chinese food but a bit of a snob and tend to shy away from most Chinese places because, well frankly, they are dirty. However, this place is a gem. You can see the kitchen and everyone cooking and it looks nice and clean and orderly. That said, I find the food here to be absolutely great!!! The lunch buffet is a great deal- all you can eat egg rolls (not spring rolls, these are the real deal) and some really good entrees for cheap. (7.25 for all the food you can handle and a soda) It's not like going to Panda Express (which is the Taco Bell of "Chinese food"), where everything pretty much tastes the same. This place is horrible on so many levels. Firstly, the service and setup is bad for a buffet. There just isn't enough space for a buffet or any real variety. I found myself having to use my dirty styrofoam plate for seconds because the cashier wasn't available to request a new one and the plates are not within reach for customers. The buffet line is so short and congested that you have to cut line in order to get seconds. The only thing you want seconds of is the sweet & sour chicken and its substandard. There noodles are greasy and soggy. The vegetables are seriously overcooked and soaked in sauces. They are always really stingy with this shrimp/onion dish and I've seen it empty far too often. The shrimp are really little, too. The egg rolls are undoubtedly frozen with hardly any filling. The hot & sour soup isn't bad but its probably processed. Also, keep your coat on while you eat because there is a cold breeze that you can't avoid when customers enter the joint. The catch is that I love Chinese food and this place is within walking distance, otherwise I would go elsewhere. read more

I gave it a graceful 2 stars because the food was edible. I ordered over the phone for pickup since it was about 2 blocks from my hotel. I wasn't expecting gourmet, but I also wasn't expecting the lady to completely mess my order up. I ordered the lunch since I specifically wanted egg drop soup. When I got there she said I ordered the combo. Which as far as I can tell was $3 extra and had no soup. She refused to make it right and I left dejected rather than argue. We have never eaten at the lunch buffet here, but my husband turned me on to this gem from ordering take-out at the downtown hospital where he works. It is as good as any I've ever had in New York, where I went to college, and that's saying a lot! Boneless Spare Ribs appetizer is always great and a lot of meat for the money: tender pork strips in a sweet (be forewarned) Chinese-style BBQ sauce with a touch of Five Spice. Egg Drop, Wonton (my favorite) and Hot and Sour soups are all consistently very good, and the Roast Pork Appetizer (not the same as the Boneless Spare Ribs) is also good; lightly marinated boneless pork (Char Siu-style) is slow roasted, sliced and served with a lightly garlicky brown gravy--a tender and delicious starter. We stay away from egg rolls, won tons and crab Rangoon in general, but they're big sellers with his co-workers. The BIG ATTRACTION for both of us is a noodle dish (Mei Fan) that he turned me on to that will KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF! Nearly every Chinese restaurant in town offers a variation of this dish, but Cheer King Star just plain does it THE BEST! The dish is called Singapore Fried Noodles or Singapore Chow Mei Fan; it is item #50 and can be found in the "Chow Mei Fan" section. It is a delicious combination of strips of sautéed chicken, strips of Char Sui pork and sautéed baby shrimp (always fresh tasting, never strong) with thin slivers of Chinese cabbage, tossed with the thinnest, lightest rice noodles you can imagine, all flavored with a deliciously exotic Chinese curry sauce and finished with a sprinkling of chili flakes (they like it HOT in Singapore)! What sets theirs apart from others in town is the noodles. Other places have thin noodles, but theirs are the thinnest around--thinner than Italian Angel Hair Cappellini--which helps distribute all the flavors more evenly and just makes the dish that much more delicate and enjoyable to eat! You can ask for the spice to be toned down if you like (the normal is spicy, so say "medium" or "mild" on the spice if you don't like too much heat), but if you enjoy the occasional Kung Pao, Hunan or Szechuan dish, you have GOT to try this one! At ANY rate, do yourself a favor and get away from the ordinary Chinese flavor profiles (General Tso's, Sweet & Sour, Beef & Broccoli, Fried Rice) and TRY THE SINGAPORE CHOW MEI FAN! It gets busy between 11:15-1:00PM during the business week, but still the staff is polite, fast, and the food is always hot, fresh, tasty and available.
