Ordered 2 fireplaces and 2 grill from them. Installers of the grill were caught on Ring doorbell watching adult content videos making lewd comments. Given how long it took them to install the grill, hood and cabinet they were getting aggravated about it and were making nasty comments about their job and how they didn't care if they would damage the cabinet and grill. Really nice to hear how good care they take ... One fireplace still needs to be fixed because the air intake doesn't seem to work. This fireplace was installed in a new construction. The store found this particular fireplace after I wanted to order a different one. Fair enough I thought, they are the professionals. Upon installing the bolt that holds the guillotine door during transport was not removed so the door would not come down. Meanwhile the contractor had framed and boarded the surroundings of the fireplace. The 4 side openings for ventilation had to be opened to install the registers and at that time there would be access inside the fireplace to remove the bolt so the door could close and the fireplace could be used. The openings were made in APRIL 2024 and I informed the store that they could come out to remove the bolt. There was an active text conversation with the owner about coming over the next Monday but he never came. We're end of OCTOBER 2024 now and nobody bothered to come over. In April we looked online and managed to do it ourselves. In July there was an email asking if the inside of the fireplace was accessible to remove the bolt. Email from the same person who was told back in April that he could come to do it and answered that he would come the next Monday. Then out of the blue they send the bill for the remainder to be paid despite knowing that they never came to resolve the issue. When we told them on April 8th that we had removed the bolt ourselves we mentioned how the air intake of this fireplace is not working. The controller in the front of the fireplace is supposed to turn and left and right but it is not moving. This issue is still not resolved and nobody from August West has gotten in touch about it. We are now talking to the manufacturer how to solve this. The "ceiling" tiles inside the fireplace have fallen out at this point and this was also brought up end of Sept when we asked AGAIN about the air intake. The lack of customer service is UNACCEPTABLE !!! The customer should not have to do all the research or get in touch with a manufacturer to get their help. We have been regular customers for a number of years (at least 10); Purchased a new Hampton cast Iron pellet stove and AW delivered and installed it. They also installed a new oil burner flu (aka chimney). We have both serviced annually and have always had terrific service. Just last week had pellet stove annual cleaning and chimney inspection. Both gentlemen were observing the COVID guidelines and both did an excellent job. Pellet stove working like new! Professional friendly and timely service. The mother-of-all Yelps... Stick with it if you want the truth about August West... Let me start by saying there are three gas fireplace dealers in the (Rt. 3 / Exit 12) area, and I believe August West sells the best custom glass fireplace doors around. PROS: Unlike the other dealers, their doors are the only ones that are powder coated, (hopefully) preventing any rusting in future years. That being said, the (custom) doors are also the most expensive... CONS: 1) We started our search in mid October, and finally settled on August West. The doors, logs and burner were sold to us by Curt on November 8th, with the hope they would be installed by Christmas. Now, I understand fireplace sales spike in the winter, and November / December are the busiest months, but we were told 6 - 8 weeks for delivery. The doors came in 10 weeks. This probably isn't August Wests fault, but (see #3)... 2) About a week after we put the deposit down (Nov 8th), someone from AW came out to make a template of the fireplace to send the company for an exact fit for the glass doors. We were told the 36" logs and burner we were sold would not fit in the fireplace, and he recommended the 24" logs / burner. I'm not sure why Curt didn't notice this from the detailed diagram I provided (I'm not an engineer or an expert on measuring things, so that might have been my fault...). 3) In mid December I called and left 3 messages for Curt to find out the status of the order, and to make sure he ordered the 24" logs / burner. On the 4th attempt, I actually went to the showroom (I got tired of leaving messages that weren't going to be returned). Curt was doing his sales thing with another customer; I assume he works on commission and don't fault him for that. What I do fault him for is he didn't break away from his potential sale (or pass them off to an associate) to answer my (simple) questions. The other sales people tried to help, but they couldn't answer the questions (no notes in the file). After waiting 30 minutes, another sales person (his boss?) said she would find out the information I requested, and did call back the following Monday. 4) The doors arrive mid January, and after exchanging emails with Curt /cc-ing the plumber, we schedule the installation and of course it snows....no, it doesn't snow...it's a blizzard! Damn! Maybe this just isn't in the cards for us.... And AW doesn't cancel until noon on the install day... I could have gone to work... 5) August West calls our home phone numerous times stating they are trying to charge the balance of the bill on my credit card, but it is declined (I canceled the card in January because I didn't need it any more). AW states they have provided what was ordered, and as per the contract they consider their portion fulfilled. I DO NOT consider it fulfilled, and will not until I have actual flames coming out of the GD fireplace! 5) Plumber pulls the permit, shows, and the gas burner doesn't fit. Well, it "fits", but the gas valve on the right hand side is touching the back wall, off centering the entire burner / log set 4" to the left. You'd think a "professional" company like AW would either know this, or have some sort of demo burner template to put into a fireplace prior to purchase to ensure the customer is ordering the correct product... AW did immediately order a new burner (which took 4 days to get to the store), but getting the plumbers schedule to match ours took another week. The plumber was great, and willing to come by at any time, even after 5pm, but again this is his busy season (no-heat calls, etc.) 6) The doors are installed, the gas logs are in and burning, but the doors came without the handles we ordered. Again, this isn't AW's fault; maybe we are a victim of circumstance. AW simply faxes the order to Diamond - the door company, and the order form clearly states the handles we requested. We went into the showroom to pay the remaining balance, and AW said they would contact Diamond to determine what happened. We get an email Jan 31st stating the correct handles are on the way. Two emails later asking for an update, I receive an update from Curt (Feb 14th) saying he is out of the office and Dan will follow-up... Still waiting Dan... Ok, they took three weeks to get installed. Bottom line, don't expect 5 star service from this company, and DON'T pay them in full until the job is completed to your satisfaction... read more

About 2 years ago, I had August West come to my home to service our Jotul gas fireplace. I had never been so upset at the customer service and I promptly wrote a scathing review... Fast forward to this morning. We've been having a lot of issues with our fireplace and I hesitantly scheduled another appt. This experience was literally night and day. Joe came to our house promptly at the scheduled time. Diagnosed the issues, got on our roof (it's 5 degrees out today) fixed the issues, and was about as polite and professional as possibly could be. Nice Product! THE WORST SERVICE I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! For you short readers here is my advice based on experience. DO NOT BUY from this business even though they carry quality products! Why you might ask?! Because they are the ONLY people who will then SERVICE your stoves and what the other 2 customers have reported are most likely entirely accurate. We purchased 2 pellet stoves on separate occasions from AW and are very happy with the quality of the stoves. Our problem is we cannot get the service staff to show up when they say they will and then when they do they cannot always fix the stoves correctly. We are still waiting on a replacement part for one of our stoves from October 2010 yup that's right 1 year ago. And of course, they have sent the invoice and keep expecting payment when the job hasn't been completed. When I have called around to other stove service repairmen (i have called 3) they will not come out to service the stove because they did not sell it to me. I have no idea why which means I am stuck with THE WORST SERVICE I HAVE EVER SEEN! For you longer readers, here is just a snapshot of what has happened most recently. Last August I called to setup for a stove maintenance and was setup for a visit in October. October comes and I receive a confirmation call confirming the appt day & time. I take half the day off of work. My appt window comes and goes so I call AW, they call the driver then call me back to say he had us scheduled for the end of the day. She then asks me if I received a confirmation call I tell her yes and it confirmed the time from 12-3pm. She says the driver can make it from 3-5pm. I tell her to forget it because I now have to leave to pick up a family member at the train so we reschedule. The next appt I set up for in the morning from 9-12pm. I take more time off from work. The driver calls and says I am finished up early from my 1st job, can i come sooner like in 15 minutes. I say yes. He then proceeds to show up 3 hours later right before noon with no explanation. He services the stoves and tells me he will need to order parts for the broken one. He leaves without starting the operational stove he just serviced and of course, I start it AND it doesn't work. I call them back and setup a time for him to come and repair both stoves. He returns about a month later fixes the 1st stove but doesn't have all of the parts to repair the other stove. He says he will order the entire kit and come back in about a month or so. Guess what? Never heard from him and they still haven't fixed my stove but are happy to send me an invoice. Honestly if I could find a way to get out of this I would. My next step is to contact the stove manufacturer and look for another service company. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND SHOP SOMEWHERE ELSE! read more

We have been having a lot of issues with our gas fireplace getting extremely sooty after a few uses. Had my propane company take a look and they cleaned it up, but suggested if it happens again to go to a place that specializes in gas fireplaces. I had it serviced by Joe at August West and he cleaned the entire thing up and it seemed to be working much better. A few hours later it was covered in soot again, even more this time (probably because it was working better after being serviced). I called August West at 7am thinking I'd get an answering machine, but sure enough they answered. Within an hour Joe was back and troubleshooting the issue. Apparently the previous owner had put a cap over the outside vent that wasn't supposed to be there, which was why the soot kept coming back. Joe was able to fix the problem and get some better venting into the fireplace. Overall the team was very responsive, nice and easy to work with. Joe is also a great guy and was not bothered at all to come back, scrub down the entire thing for the second time and fix someone else's problem! Will definitely use them again! read more

Stopped by August West with my husband to check out the Enviro pellet stoves they had to offer, as we were considering them for a primary heating source this winter. We went during the week, around 1PM or so, and found that we had to wait quite some time to get someone to help answer our questions. After probably 20+ minutes of waiting and wandering around, we were just about ready to walk out the door, when finally someone was available to help answer our questions. Unfortunately, that person was new and hadn't been trained on the pellet stoves yet, so we had to wait for another person to become available. It was no big deal, but after waiting so long already, it felt like the nail in the coffin. We talked briefly about the Enviro stove, plus a couple of other options, but really didn't feel "strongly" about purchasing our stove from here. We walked out feeling lukewarm about this business, and ended up going with a different stove company in another town. It seems like several other reviewers mention that the sales team could use a little boost, too. I'm sure it's a fine business, but when you're in a bind to get something ordered and installed before a cold snap, you want someone who's going to work with you and "get on it" quickly. We purchased a woodstove 4 months ago and was told we'd get a follow up for installation. The follow up never came. With winter rapidly approaching and twins on the way, we decided to take the follow up into our own hands. We've called repeatedly to get this resolved and have been told each time that we would receive a call back after our situation is looked into. Again, these call backs never came. Please tell me what we need to do to get our stove installed or at least a follow up to why we won't. As it stands, I do not recommend August West for your heating needs. They seem to just want to make the sale and be done with you. They continue to make promises and deals that they do not intend on following through with. Had a couple guys come out to inspect my chimney since I purchased a new house. Guys were very nice and friendly. We suspected a leak around the flashing but they said it was fine and did a little spray around the flashing. Of course the next heavy rain, we had water leaking in the house from the "fixed" area. Asked them to come out and take a look at their work, which they realized was not good. Said they would check it out more but it had to be above 45 degrees. Due to it being winter who knows when that would happen but obviously we needed to fix it as water in the house is not good. We had some roofing companies come out who said it was clearly a flashing issue. Anyway, hundreds of dollars wasted at August West and many more dollars spent with a different reputable, responsive, and professional company to fix it. Future work down the road will steer clear of August West. read more

We have been working with August West for about 3 yrs (they've swept our chimney each year and it's been great). We then wanted to purchase a wood burning insert and that's when their customer service really showed. We started engaging them in late July/early August... things moved Ok, they came out and measured, then....nothing. A quote was generated in September but never sent to us. We called...called...and left several messages for Matt (the Manager). Nothing. Multiple times, we called the receptionist who "promised" he would call back...and still nothing. I called a competitor who was very happy to take the business (at least $5k) and it all turned out fine for us, but wasted several months. I hesitated to write this review, but feel like the community should know that this business struggles to meet a basic level of customer service. read more

In April of 2017, I brought in my electric fireplace to be repaired. The "scrolling motor" burned out, so they replaced it. Fine. 7 months later, the unit broke again. I contacted "Curt" who said I could I bring the unit in again. One month goes by and I get no phone calls. So, I call them and I get, "We know nothing about yout unit. We'll have Curt call you." (I get no phone call) Another month passes by with no call. I call back again and finally someone tells me my unit is done. They replaced a light bulb. It cost me $126. Two months, no phone calls, 1 light bulb, and $126....oh yeah, and they broke the light knob on my unit....which of course they denied. I'm extremely disappointed with this place. I've called them several times so I could speak with Curt, but he never calls me back. I do not recommend doing business with them. If I could give ZERO STARS, I would. My complaint is that when I called to set up and estimate for installing a chimney captheo one told me that I would be required to pay $125 to get an estimate. If I had been given this information then I would have found a different store that did not charge such a large amount just for an estimate. Details: Recently I called August West Chimney in Hingham for an appointment to see about getting a chimney cap installed. Nothing was mentioned about a $125.00 fee for coming to make the estimate. On the day of the appointment they were scheduled to arrive between 3 p.m. - 5 p. m. They arrived approximately 25 minutes early and checked with my partner inside who gave them permission to go on the roof. When I, the homeowner, arrived at 2:50-55 p.m. I was surprised to see two men up on the roof! They had already done most of the work and told me I would have to pay them $125.00. Again if they had waited for me to arrive and told me the charge I would have cancelled. I do not recommend this company. I feel they are deceitful and maybe a bit unethical. I feel ripped off and certainly would never give them my business under any circumstances. read more

I cannot say enough about the customer service, and the attention to detail shown both on the floor of the showroom, and by the installers while in my home. Owner, Curt Ludlow, knows his products, and took time to explain our options. He even talked me out of a more expensive unit! While they carry top quality products my experience was poor! I'm happy to see that we are not the only consumers who feel this way... In December the guy came to our home to give us an estimate on a wood stove and chimney installation for our finished basement. We were told with Christmas right around the corner he wouldn't have our estimate for a couple of weeks. As new 1st time home owners and never having to deal with a situation like this before we took his word for it. Well, weeks roll by and no word. My spouse called to get an update and was told by the woman answering that the estimate hadn't been done yet and they would be in touch. Another couple of weeks go by and still nothing! My spouse called again and was told the same thing... we wait another few weeks annnnd nothing. We waited a month and a half with no word from them whatsoever at which point we decided 'screw it, let's just go to another place' and ended up at Linwood in Hanover... they gave us an estimate the day after they came out to our house! Happy to give them our $7000 in business. So, I understand that you are likely to hear more bad than good things on a review site but I am baffled with this place. I guess they don't want or need the business? Who knows? I wouldn't waste another breath trying to work with them though. read more

Paid $200+ for an inspection. Told all was sucky and needed 30 k worth of repair and that a report would be coming. That was three weeks ago. No report to date. Meantime, had another co. out and found not all was sucky. Not sure who to believe but not getting a detailed report gives me serious paw, er, pause. Do not use August West. They installed a gas fireplace for us a few years ago and never swept the chimney first. We now have to reinstall liners and fireplace in order to fully sweep all of the creosote out of our chimney. Every time we ran the fireplace there would be an awful smell. If you are a woman and you go to this store, prepare to be ignored. I got a great insert several years ago, as a single woman. I returned and brought my boyfriend. Although I was the one asking questions, shopping for the fireplace and paying for it, the man we went to see COMPLETELY ignored me. I also asked him to show me the affordable models, telling him my exact price range. He then showed us the high end stuff. When he started telling me about inserts, I said, "I know. I was told someone would call me back by the end of the day... no one called. Bats! That's right, Duxbury bats in my fireplace. After taping the glass door, smoke bombs, multiple exterminator calls and screaming kids yelling bats! Bats! It was august west to the rescue. They told me I needed a chimney cap with a closed-in screen, I had a chimney cap but never noticed a screen around it. They came over the next day early in the morning, removed the old cap, installed the new one and Voila! problem solved. No more bats, unnecessary expenses and screaming kids. Like one reviewer noted, August West really goes out of their way to make you NOT want to do business with them. We visited their Hingham location in mid-November to look at stoves to replace our existing one. Lady there was lovely (too bad didn't catch her name). We found a couple of options and we were told to schedule a home appointment to figure out the best option. Everything else went downhill from there. Called to schedule an appointment, but were told to go to the store to look at options. Explained that we already had gone to the store and just need someone to look at our specific situation to recommend which of the stoves we had picked are most appropriate. A couple of frustrating communications back and forth. Finally thought, one last try - maybe going back IN PERSON we could get through to them. Dan at the Hingham store scheduled us a week later to have Jeff visit and look at our setup. Date and time comes - no one arrives (20 min after the appointment). I call August West just to get an updated ETA, but Chris (who is in the Pembroke store) doesn't even have us on the schedule! Asked to talk to Dan (in the Hingham store) and they figure out it is 'Kurt' who is coming (but still hasn't arrived). Voiced concerns that the communication with them has been 'crazy' and Dan is incensed. So we cancelled the visit. Funny thing is, Dan calls back a few minutes later to try to 'fix' the issue. Instead of saying, 'sorry, our bad for the inconsistent communication/messages, we will do our best to regain your business' it is just more excuses. Dan even said something along the lines that we are unreasonable for expecting them to be on time! WHAT?!?! Customer service training please. Lots of it. Too bad, the lady at the Hingham store was really lovely and helpful. $3,450 labor charge. 10 hours labor PLEASE DO NOT BE AW NEXT VICTIM Buyer Beware. I signed a contract with August West based upon not only the written estimate of work to be done but several verbal conversations regarding work and time frame. They threw an inflated estimate out. August West has a practice of selling and talking up a job to be done with two or more people. Giving you a hint that they may be playing off each other. But because you can't figure out the reasoning until in hindsight you realize your hunch was correct. From the job details to selling us an overpriced wood stove. They were manilplative. We had a chimney fire in our home. During our walk thorough and estimate they definitely played on our emotions. Jeff Sr and Jeff Jr. talk the company up and make you realize that our homes safety is left best in thier hands. From knowing how to get the town permit for a grandfathered in issue to the installation of a dual stainless steel liner that not many companies do. Set up staging Demolish and remove damaged clay liner, install dual stainless liner, install cap. The job is to take "better part of a week if not more ". Making it clear the job could go worse than expected which would raise the time and cost. I got all the specifics from them verbally as well such as the loud noise during demo because we have dogs, the stages of days, how to work around others working on our home, days they needed entrance, location of fuse box for days I would not be home, ect..... This is where it goes very wrong. Our estimate for whole job was $6,066 $2,368 materials $3,450 labor $. 100 permit fee First day they were there for 7 hr , second day 2 hr, then coming back nine days later for 1 hour. Done After the short amount of time they were here my husband and I were very surprisingly happy. We thought best case senerio happened and the job for sure absolutely went quicker and better than expected. Unlike what they told us may happen. At the end of the job we were expecting a call stating how happy they were and how job was very different then they thought. Nope. They stuck by original estimate. $ $3,450 labor. A labor charge that they built up to a week if not more and pumped up the importance of having this important job done correctly. Day 1 -7 hours; set up staging, demo machine, vacuum to withdraw debris. Four workers for couple hours with two young workers manning a post on the staging for remainder of day Day 2- 2 hours. Small crew arrived little after 12:00 and inserted dual liner. Left it hangin out of chimney because they didn't measure cap correctly Day 3. 1 hour. They came back nine days later and put cap on chimney Job done. My husband I are blue collar workers and know it is not just the time on property for labor charge. In reality this job was far far simpler that it was built up to be. Once they called to tell me they are sticking to original labor charge I went down to office. I asked for them to explain how they justify this charge. I told them I would be happy to pay if they could explain how they got to this figure. Jeff Sr lines were " it is what it is " " oh well....you signed a contract" , "I don't have to explain because you signed a contract" . Holly got involved with raised voices and both claiming they don't have time to explain how they charge $3,450 for 10 hours work when this job was to take better part of a week if not more. Jeff said he would get be a break down when he had time. He stated he charges $1,800 a day labor. Which was an odd staple amount. I thought that in itself would make him rethink this charge for 10 hrs work. I paid full amount of bill minus $900.00. I told them I would pay the remainder once we get the breakdown of how they priced the labor. Jeff Sr. Said he would. I called and spoke to Jeff Sr.several times with no luck , I called and spoke to Holly and left messages , I received a certified letter for remainder $900 and when I called Jeff Sr I left a voice mail. August West took us to Small Claims Court. Holly came as thier Representative. She stated AW worked a total of 10 hours on The Graham job. Magistrate looked surprised with the statement . We lost the case. The Court Magistrate stated if he was ruling based on empathy we would win , based on good business practice we would win. But because I signed the contract and in a court of law we lost. By the way Holly spoke and acted they have done this before. Even the Court Magistrate had to put her in her place more than once. I signed a contract with $3,450 labor charge. All my notes of conversations with August West meant nothing. No one would sign that for 10hours labor. My husband wanted to stay with a Pembroke company and he apoloiged for that false loyalty. Please get it in writing. No idea why a company would choose to down right steal from us. One star is charitable. Run away from considering doing business with them. Here are few facts about their services based upon my experiences. The first is malpractice, the second if pure fraud. Since 2009 they have been cleaning my stove flue with a vacuum device named the viper. For the past 2 years the stove has increased issues with improperly drafting and issues with smoke backing up. This year we had a reputable chimney cleaning company brush our flue from the cap down. Apparently August West crew over the years compacted the top 18" of the flue with creosote solid. It took the new sweep a vigorous effort to break out this solid pack of material. I've kept large chunks of this and I'm amazed we didn't have a flue fire. This year the stove is working wonderfully with me saying now - August West "you're fired"! The fraud scheme came when they tried to sell me that my new home of 9 years oil furnace flue had a failed Terra cotta liner. This was purely construction mortar and debris below the oil burner flue inlet. This fraud was debunked by my new chimney sweep. Bottom line August West a pox upon you. read more

We had these guys add a cap on my chimney, insert gas fireplace in our living room and install a gas stove on the hearth of our family room replacing a old wood stove and we couldn't be happier or more impressed with all of it! Although they sell good products, I have to agree that the service is lacking. And by that I mean lack of follow through. When a business says they are going to do something and then don't, and you never hear from them again, to me that equals poor customer service. Unfortunately, I won't use them for any services going forward. read more

Poor follow up and responsiveness! I feel like I'm putting them out just trying to get an answer to where the parts are that they were supposed to order almost two weeks ago (which they still haven't ordered)! I don't trust that they truly know their stuff when it comes to our gas fireplace issues, and the customer service is really poor. I rarely take the time to write a review, but I had to google the phone number and saw all these Yelp reviews pop up, which confirmed all the frustration I've been feeling while dealing with August West. Do yourself a favor and find another company to use that has better service and knowledge! read more

My husband and I were looking for a custom built glass door for our wood fireplace. The salesperson who helped us acted like we were inconveniencing him. He was distracted and disinterested in helping us. We emailed him the fireplace dimensions and picture and promised that someone would contact us. It's been a week and no one has called us. He quoted us about $2000 for the project and yet no one at this store was interested in our business. We couldn't believe how rude the salesman was and how they never followed up.
