I saw my first production at Atlantic Theater Company last Saturday and had a wonderful time. This Off-Broadway, non-profit theater company was founded in 1985 by playwright David Mamet, actor William H. Macy, and a group of acting students. Since its founding, it has produced more than 200 plays, including Tony Award winning productions of Spring Awakening, the Band's Visit, and Kimberly Akimbo. The theater is small and intimate but very comfortable. The bathrooms and a bar can be found downstairs and there wasn't a wait for either during our matinee. The building is beautiful, and its location in Chelsea is convenient for a pre-theater meal! Finally - the production. We saw Indian Princesses, and I really enjoyed the play. They made so much of the set, and the acting was great. It was one of the best plays I've seen in while. I'm signed up for emails from the theater so I don't miss their next great production. Definitely check out this unique Off-Broadway theater if you haven't already. read more

Never saw a show here before, and a seat mate shared that Buena Vista Social Club is the rare musical to be shown here. That aside, I love the boxy stage that can be turned into any configuration a show might need--and does so dynamically! Seeing the fictionalized 90s doc and original CD come to life in a 90s "present day" paired with it's 50s origin story of sisters and friends singing and dancing against Cuba's stark political landscape that threatens to rend all locals apart, glides you along this confection of a musical with dance and poignant, if basic, storytelling. Excitedly saw Deepa Purohit's off-Broadway play "Elyria"playing at Atlantic Theater in NYC. Let's go explore Elyria with a Gujarati family going back to 1982... Elyria is a town in Ohio, USA A Gujarati family (Mother, Father and Son) living in Elyria. They'd migrated from Kenya, East Africa to London then eventually settled in Ohio. FYI, there were a lot of Gujarati natives from India that'd moved to Kenya back in the days... Elyria is a story about two women, one man and a child. It tells the journey about how the Hindu caste had affected/impacted marriages and resulted into family secrets and disappointment....but life must go on...though somehow the truth will be told at some point.... I'd totally enjoyed the story telling, fantastic classical Hindu music, traditional Indian outfits and the dad's sense of humor...I couldn't stop laughing at his "hellos" and vibrant yet loud "sneezes".... And I'd very much appreciated the complimentary ticket. Highly recommend seeing this play if you want to experience a different kinda stage vibe.... The Atlantic Theater is very personal and honestly it does not matter where you are seated; you'll have a nice view of the stage. The have a very cute concession stand in the basement where you can grab a hot or cold beverage along with a snack. I really like this theater! read more

I lucked out and was first on the cancelation list for a sold out show, which means I got in! I saw INFINITE LIFE and loved it. I sat in D14 and had a great view. Didn't even realize I was in an old church until I read these other Yelp reviews. Acoustics could have been better, but everything else was perfect. Staff was kind. Fellow theater patrons were also great. Loved that this theater is just an 8 minute walk from the L train. read more

We went to see The Secret Life of Bees and found both the play and the theater to be fantastic. The theater is delightfully small where we're seat has a great view of the stage. I can testify to this because I had a seat in the last row and thought it might have been the best seat in the house! I was so impressed with the theater that my wife and I just bought season tickets for next year's performances! The cost of the seats are $50 each which is a great bargain and a wonderful way to enjoy great theater! read more

Great gem in an old church in Chelsea. It's so tiny you feel like you are INSIDE the play... 140 seats! I came her to see "On the shore of the wide world", featuring Blair Brown, CJ Wilson and Ben Rosenfield, and it was a priceless experience. You're surrounded on three side by exposed brick walls, and the lighting is superb. The triangular roof of the church above your eyes is very atmospheric. Wow. read more

Hidden gem, off-Broadway theater company housed in an old stone church in Chelsea. Atlantics's productions often draw stars willing to perform for very little because they actually love acting. Their plays sometimes go on to Broadway because they're so good ("The Band's Visit" is just one example). Seating is kinda tight but I've had worse in pricey venues at double+ the price. Handicap accessible w/elevators and handrails, cute bar and spacious restrooms downstairs with theater seating upstairs. I've been a member for many years which gets me reduced pricing and advance announcements. IMHO this kind of experience is what makes NY great. read more

My husband and I were lucky enough to catch the last show Derren Brown was performing in NYC this weekend! He loves Derren Brown and we were bummed we weren't able to make a trip happen to London to see the "Underground" shows so we were super hyped that he was able to grab the last 2 seats together for Derren Brown: Secret. We have watched all, if not most, of Derren Brown's videos and anything we could get our hands on! This show definitely had elements and acts we've seen before (not in person), but when you're in his presence, it's surreal and so different. The theater had about 200 seats and every seat in the house was great! We both even got a chance to get up on stage and be a part of the acts! It was amazing to see him at work and be in the presence of other fans who are just as in awe of him. The staff was great, theater was clean, seats felt so close, and there were also refreshments and restrooms on the lower level. There are stairs as well as an elevator and accessible entrance to the theater. It was an amazing show and we even got to meet him, take pictures with him and got his autograph!! He remembered who we were and other patrons who had been to multiple shows. He's so nice and such a down to earth man. I am beyond ecstatic that we got to see him and be a part of his debut American stage show run and his last show on this tour. We hope that the extension on this show means he will be bringing his show back to NYC very soon!! read more

Untill today I would have rated Atlantic at 5 stars. I'm a long time subscriber (and small donor), three friends have happily joined at my suggestion. However, today I got an email offer for tickets to their upcoming production of "Days of Wine and Roses" starring Kelli O'Hara. A no-brainer, right? I quickly logged into my account, and discovered that these tkts were for the general public and not available to subscribers for another week. The subscribers who support ALL productions, great or not, get the crumbs when something like this comes along. I ended my subscription at Second Stage when I caught them doing this (and have no regrets). It was a long-time principle with theater subscribers that they got first chance at ALL produtions in return for supporting the entire company season. I'm pissed! read more

Here's the situation. You arrived in New York at 1am the night before, and had to take a $150 cab ride to New Jersey for your next day at work. You got 1.5hrs of sleep and then began interviewing schlocky candidates for your company all day long. At 6pm, you grab the Morristown train back to Penn Station, and, with luggage in hand, take a cab directly to the Atlantic Theatre, where you're catching a play in 30 minutes. You run to the ticket booth and (thank god) they have an extra ticket 2nd row center. They also offer to store your luggage in the cramped ticketbooth space for free. The guy at the concession counter offers you an oatmeal cookie for dinner, then thinks again and directs you to a fantastic pizza shop around the corner. Slice in belly, you return just in time to be seated for the show. The seat is great, the show is fab, and you get to meet Duncan Sheik (who wrote the music) randomly during intermission... Apparently Lou Reed is in the house as well. How could one complain? This was a top night by anyone's mark. And certainly made my week... read more

This is a beautiful theatre with some great shows. We went here to see Derren Brown: Secret....who I have been a HUGE fan for forever. Coming here to see him was like a dream come true....I don't think people in the theatre knew of him or how famous he was...anyway. The theatre was beautiful, there wasn't a bad seat in the house, and the seat were extremely comfortable. We had lots of leg room and not only was it comfortable but was in a beautiful setting of an old church. This place was converted into an amazing Theatre. I appreciate all of the work they've done for the arts and the incredible staff that keeps it running. I hope to come back and see another show...I wish it could be Derren Brown again. read more

Over the past couple of years, I've been a subscriber to three different off-broadway theatre companies, plus bought tickets to the majority of productions produced by a fourth. And while I have certainly enjoyed many, I have to say that the Atlantic's productions have been the most consistently great of all of them. They consistently cast top notch actors and choose really interesting and strong plays. All this, plus their main stage is in a really lovely old former-church (well, at least i think that's what it is), AND it's located downtown and NOT in the ridiculously congested midtown theatre district like most of the other theaters i frequent. So, needless to day, while this has been my first season as an Atlantic subscriber, but it won't be my last! read more

Oh we're walking into the church! Are we going for services before the play? Church on time. No it's just a church outside, theatre inside. It's mad cool. I love the building. It's clean, there is air conditioning that works, the decor is pretty new. I love that they kept the feel of the church outside as well as inside. There are some pews downstairs by the bar and lounge area. The brick walls in the building are my favorite. The arches inside are beautiful. I wish more Off-Broadway theatres are as pretty and comfy as the Atlantic Theater Company. read more

I just recently had my first experience with the Atlantic Theater Company- and I am absolutely certain it will not be my last! I attended the show Marie and Rosetta, and it truly exceeded expectations. The interesting storyline paired with phenomenal acting created a captivating experience. Marie and Rosetta pulled at my heartstrings, made me laugh, and had my foot tapping all night long. In addition to a great show, my experience with the Atlantic Theater Company was lovely. Being in Chelsea, the theater was perfectly located near great restaurants, and a short walk away from public transit. The staff was extremely eager to help, and very kind. The theater was clean, and the seating was very comfortable. I absolutely would recommend this theater to anyone who was looking for a fabulous off-Broadway experience! read more

It's got a church-like facade but there's a theater inside. I recently saw Offices in the Linda Gross Theater and had a good experience as far as theaters go. The space is pretty cozy with about 10 rows each 15-20 seats long set on an incline so there is no danger of having your view blocked. The show had a rotating set, which I thought worked well -- made scene changes quick and effective. Not sure if the theater had a bathroom -- my friend looked for one quickly after the show but there was nothing in plain view so we left. Other than that, I felt the theater was a good spot for this particular show. read more

The theater the right size, conveniently located, and clean. I recently saw 'Guards at The Taj" there. The play was based upon a fictitious event after the construction of the Taj Mahal. The dialogue was interesting and actors gave stunning performances. However, the staff is not very friendly. The lady at the theater entrance was very rude here. As we walked in and handed her our tickets, she scowled and me and my friend. I wanted to save paper and said with a smile that I didn't need a playbill to which she responded curtly, "but you WILL turn off your cell phone!!" I had already done that since I'm a patron of theaters like this one. Anyway, the staff should be appreciative of young theater goers instead of barking at them for no apparent reason. read more

I would give it five stars if I felt like I could compare it to other theater experiences in NYC. Definitely saw a great show. Great actors and set for $10 (rush tickets). It seems like you really get a great view from any seat. I was in the center in the last row, which is a makeshift set of individual chairs, and I was happy as a clam. Really enjoyed my experience and maybe I'll change my star rating later. read more

Today we saw a matinée performance of "The Jammer" and it was *terrific*, including superb choreography! Not only were we laughing hysterically at many points, but the lead actor's role included many poignant moments. The play will be there until February 10 and it's really worth seeing. (Note that this play is being performed at the West 16th Street location). read more

I have worked in this theater numerous times over the years. Staff is great as is the location. They have some real hidden gems playing at this space throughout the year. Located inside an old church it has high ceilings and is accessible with a wheelchair. They have a bar downstairs which serves some snacks and alcoholic beverages with a women and men's bathroom also. Their version of hangmen which came from the royal court is one of the best plays I have seen in a while. Love ATC. read more

3.5 stars. Another one of the theatres that's located within a church. Unless you've been here, you may get confused as to how to really get into the theatre. It's not the main gate, which is padlocked... it's the first door with the theater posters plastered on it. Tiny theatre, seats about 260, bathrooms are at the end of the theater, walking past the stage area. Fortunately they are not individual rooms but actually contains 2 stalls within. Concessions comprise of a variety of snacks, food and drinks. I was here to catch the preview of Gabriel and absolutely loved it. The staging was great, actors amazing and I had a most enjoyable time. read more

Intriguing space. I'd be interested to see what this section of the church looked like before they renovated. Beautifully open feel to the theater itself. Nice seating section, if a bit narrow in the aisles leading to the seats. Quality production (NIGHT ALIVE). Wasn't a fan of the bathroom set up (felt like wasted space....usually you want ample space in any NYC setting...but it's not built for quick turn over). The aisles/performance space/upstairs lobby are definitely not built for congregating or bundling up in winter time. But I did like the venue itself. read more

I saw "The Secret Life of Bees" and the show was FANTASTIC. I can't complain about any parts of the theater so I'm giving 5 stars.

This was our first time at ATC, to see The Secret Life of Bees, and we loved both the show (which should definitely go to Broadway, if there is any justice in the world) and the theatre, which is intimate and lovely. We hope to return for future shows! I have to take two stars off, however, for their odd seating policy. I went to the box office over a month before our show date and specifically purchased the last three remaining seats that were together, as I was treating my two daughters and wanted to sit with them, since we seldom get to see shows all together. When we arrived at the theater, 30 minutes before showtime, two of our three seats were gone and a lady in a wheelchair was seated in their place. Now, I paid $96 for each ticket, and when I purchased them, I was not told that our seats could be given to a person in a wheelchair, if needed. It took awhile, but eventually, my daughters were seated elsewhere in the theater and I was not able to enjoy the show with them, as I had hoped to. Perhaps a small thing, but it seems they should have specific seats or sections set aside for wheelchairs, and not just decide to displace others who paid to sit together in the first place, especially when we are paying a lot to do so. Or if that is your policy, let people know when they buy the tickets, please! Just a suggestion. read more

Be careful with your seating. I attended a performance and my vision was partially blocked because of crates on the stage and I couldn't see critical parts of the play. Manager refused to give me a credit or a ticket to a different performance. Make sure you are seated in the center. read more

8 or 9 years ago i saw a production of 'Hobson's Choice' here. i sat as close as possible to the stage and remember that martha plimpton kept spitting near me as she projected her lines. it was a great afternoon. i can definitely say that this business is 'Good for Kids' since i was a kid, more or less, when i was last there. yelp needs a Children's Division. read more

The best thing about this theatre is the "show for a price of a movie." I saw Spring Awakening for $10 and sat on stage. This is a great program and gets more people to the theatre. Keep it up Atlantic! read more

Mary and I attend a number of Off Broadway shows, but this past Saturday will be the one and only time for this group. Traffic was terrible, and we were 10 minutes late, so when we were told we would have to wait 15 minutes for the set change break in order to seat us, we completely understood. A staff member showed us to a seating area with a TV in order to watch the play on the screen. About 5 minutes later, she returned and informed us that the theater had given our tickets away. At this point I should point out that our seats were on the aisle in the second row, and that I am handicapped. We were told that our options were to either watch the entire first act (approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes) on the TV or agree to sit in folding chairs in the back. After insisting on speaking to a manager, he informed us that since this was the closing weekend, they gave our seats to ushers who worked there, and it is within their rights to do so. He claimed this policy is stated on their website (it's not). He also said that because the set change at the 25 minute mark happens so quickly, it would be too disruptive to remove the ushers and give us our seats. It was only after threatening litigation, that they relented and agreed to give us our seats. There was no disruption at all. However, the manager was incredibly rude, and argumentative. After reading other reviews here about the staff, I would stay away. read more
