I was so happy to discover this gem of a coffee shop while on a walking tour of Maury Island. It has fantastic vibes and everything you could possibly want: great coffee and ice cream! The service was wonderful--the barista was welcoming, helpful, and patient while taking our order. We both ordered Americanos, and the espresso was top-notch. It's also incredibly convenient that they have a drive-thru, a kid's area, and an ice cream bar. I also really appreciated that the restroom was clean and handicap accessible--such a thoughtful touch. I cannot recommend this place enough! I'll definitely be making this a regular stop whenever I'm in the area visiting the site of the famous Maury Island incident--the home of the alleged first 'Men in Black' encounter following the UFO sighting in June 1947. read more

This place is OK. My pastry had a funny aftertaste. Maybe it was old. I had the distinct impression that they just purchased a bunch of pastries from Safeway. It wasn't very good. Really cute place!! They do everything: coffee, sandwiches, ice cream, salads. The Reuben I got was delicious, super hot and crispy. The ice cream was also great with huge servings (my photo is only a junior scoop!). They do not make it in house but it's from Umpqua and Cascade Glacier. Waffle cones and bowls ($1.10) are available but also not made in house. Cake cones are an extra 25 cents. They also sell day-old muffins for $1. I got a blueberry muffin from that pile and it was still great and tasted homemade. There is street parking across the street and they have 3 parking spots in their small lot + a drive thru for coffee. The logo does not match their inside, which looks a lot more modern. Probably the worst ice cream parlor we've ever been to. We fell into the "Wally's Chowder House to Auntie Irene's" pipeline (as most likely do) and we couldn't be more disappointed. My wife got the Cookie Dough ice cream and it tasted like they just froze 90% water and 10% milk. I tried it and all I could taste was ice crystals. We had to confirm that we didn't accidentally get a vegan flavor, but we didn't see anything indicating there was no milk in that flavor. Instead of Cookie Dough, they should call it Cookie Don't because man that flavor sucked. We were there like 10 mins before closing so I can't really blame the workers for being tired looking and lacking positivity. And the ambiance was just a typical ice cream parlor. Plus, they are the only and I mean the only place that uses chocolate ice cream for their chocolate malts, instead of vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. 2 stars for my drink and my husband's banana bread... This is the second time I've gone through their drive-thru patiently waiting my turn in their forever slowly moving line just to wait for more than 10 minutes to order. (1 drink, 2 banana bread, and 1 sandwich) The first time I couldn't wait any longer and told them to give it to me and I would warm it up myself. This time she told me to go around the building and park in the parking lot (it's a one way street, let's cause an accident while we are at it shall we?)... I've been waiting for over 20 minutes and still haven't gotten it. Mom ordered the spinach wrap, and I think the spinach is part of the tortilla. They subbed out the tortilla for a GF option. (Note, there's not spinach leaves inside the wrap...) Mom still found the wrap to be very delicious. I had the breakfast burrito, and it was hot and tasty. (Go for the bacon, of course!) We visited as the fall cooler weather set in, so we sat next to a gas fireplace. The matcha latte was fairly good. It must have had a sprinkle of cinnamon, so let the purist be advised. Scones were made by another baker and pre-packaged to go. If I were to mark down anything, I would say that the parking is a little tougher. On 5/13/21 My daughter and I were driving around and came across Auntie Irene's Expresso, Pastries and Gourmet Ice cream small shop. The shop had many seating options; Kids corner. Small nooks. The interior decor and design is atheistically pleasing. We chose the exterior seating with a view under the sun. It was not busy during this time. Only one customer ahead of us. We had already eaten lunch so we decided on ice cream dessert. I got the Almond Fudge on waffle cone. My daughter got the Maple Pecan on waffle cone. They were so yummy! A friend suggested I bring my parents here for lunch when we were visiting the Des Moines Marina and I thought, "No, I can't have ice cream for lunch, I need real food!" The restaurant was busy but never felt crowded, and we loved watching all the dogs in cars coming through the drive-through. We ordered our food and didn't have to wait long. I had the strawberry chicken salad with golden raisins and poppyseed dressing - the half salad was huge! My mom had the roasted turkey and bacon sandwich, it was also big, and she had leftovers. My dad had a special sandwich - a Hawaiian grilled cheese with spam and pineapple, and he raved about it for days to come. I also had a cup of salmon chowder that was pretty solid. Overall, the location, food, and atmosphere made this place a winner. The friend who suggested Auntie Irene's told me that the owner (Susie, not Irene) is a long-time contributor to the community, and that made me even more excited about this find. Full disclosure...we are regulars of Auntie Irene's and have been for years. We love their coffee, the ambience of the place, and the morning staff (Meghan, Anna, Katy, Tara) who we see during 90% of our visits. We always try to support local businesses and those that are woman-owned is a plus. Thank you, Susie, for being so caring of others, supportive of local events and artists, and creative so your business could continue during the pandemic and beyond. We are so impressed with this place! We stopped for pasties but got tempted by the sandwiches. We were in town for a week and ended up going here 3 times! Food feels like home cooking. I have yet to try their soups and lunch specials - but from other reviewers, those are must-try's too. Coffee here is definitely above standard. First time here, I got a simple almond milk latte, no syrup. Espresso was on point. There was a hint of smoky, but not burnt or bitter. Overall, I'm adding this place to my regulars list. I have to admit, it was so refreshing to see such kind and happy employees! Each batista who worked there were genuinely kind and were so eager to help each customer. They had quite a line outside for drive thru too, so great work ladies! We were greeted when we entered and left so our time there was very nice. Now for the food and drinks, it was amazing! My boyfriend and I both got breakfast paninis and a ham and potato soup! The garlic butter was divine in the panini. What a lovely coffee shoppe in Des Moines. I got up early to schedule my COVID jab(s); I then had a couple hours of wait time ahead of me. I located Auntie Irene's on Yelp and decided on breakfast and coffee and check in with my students online before heading out. What a friendly group of women working the counter! My turkey, egg, and cheese sandwich was surprisingly yummy and a good compliment to my iced latte.
