We can't say enough wonderful things about Dawn and Marty. They are such a wonderful team to work with and helped our wedding day go off without a hitch. I was a rather high maintenance client (I'm gluten free and we have several nut allergies in our family as well), so we needed to make sure everyone had something delicious to eat. They were more than willing and able to make this happen which was such a huge relief! The whole process of working with Marty and Dawn was just fantastic. My husband and I are Virginia transplants to the Bay Area, and decided to hold our 150 person wedding reception at the Log Cabin in the SF Presidio this past April 2015. At age 40, and 38 respectively, we have attended numerous weddings over the years and knew that hiring our caterer would be the most important decision of the wedding. Not only is the catering service inherently the most costly of all the vendors, it's the most demanding of all of the services. That said, five weeks later we are still receiving compliments on the food, and are overjoyed to write this review of Aurora Catering. Dawn is the primary business and hospitality interface, while Marty, her husband, is the culinary mastermind. It's immediately evident that their marriage to one another is uniquely founded upon their deep personal passions for food and hospitality, which fundamentally translates in to their business. They have more than just skin in the game. They have their marriage and that is where their magic comes in to play and can't be duplicated. As an Italian-American bride, with a family history for food appreciation, it was important that guests attending the event experience a memorable meal, from Hors d'Oeuvres through dessert. The food was our way of communicating our love for our guests, to feel nourished, satiated, delighting in the tastes and aromas in celebration of our marriage. I suppose our love language is food! If that's not a big order, and easily the highest pressure job to get right, customized to our liking I don't know what is! From the onset, Dawn and Marty came to the table inherently understanding our passion, as they took on the even heavier burden and passion to get it right. And they delivered! For Dawn and Marty, it's very personal. Dawn and Marty want you to experience their work product first hand. We were invited to meet them at a live event where it was immediately evident that they bring such JOY and LOVE to their work. Further,, we found it enlightening to learn how much goes in to the work behind the scenes, and learned that you should want to know about the catering STAFF who were awesome and happy to be working for Marty and Dawn. Marty is the chef. I've never met someone so wildly passionate about food, and the culinary creative process. Marty was so excited to talk about food and his experiences it was contagious. Marty is energetic, and absolutely delightful. I will tell you this: Marty absolutely will not compromise on the quality of his product. He stands by the product and understands that the product is EVERYTHING. If the product is anything less than optimal, he will simply not offer it. He wants only the best for his clients. The food speaks for itself. As mentioned in other reviews, it was a real pleasure to visit Marty and Dawn's home for our personal chef's tasting. Marty's creative passion is limitless, as evidenced by the 20 different offerings he prepared during the tasting. Just remember, Marty will be a stickler for quality product, so expect only the most fresh and highest quality ingredients in his food Marty's bountiful, delightful, fun loving nature and enthusiasm is balanced by Dawn's intensely peaceful presence. Why is this important? There was such an adrenal and sensory overload amidst the intense outpouring of love that swept over us when we entered our reception, in combination with witnessing all the months of planning transpire before my eyes, It turns out that I needed.... To be calmed. In those moments, nothing brought me more peace than being quietly greeted by Dawn at the Sweetheart table, with the table setting gorgeously displayed and executed. It was a tremendous gift to see it all and take it all in. Somehow, Dawn's presence gave me a distinct sense of ease in their work, and ease to enjoy the night we were about to embark upon. One of our requests was that Marty duplicate my grandfather's Italian red sauce which we had with penne pasta, meatballs and with a brined chicken parmesan. It was everything I had hoped for, but more importantly, it won the approval of the most discerning critics, my uncles and Italian American family. We also selected a carving station of filet minion, served by Marty himself, which yielded the best piece of steak I've ever cut in to in my life, again a testament to Marty's fierce selection of quality product, and perfect preparation. Marty accompanied the fillet with a creamy, horseradish sauce. This was a marshmallow quality creamy.... Insanely light and fluffy, literally like a cloud. It was all outstanding. Dawn also handled our rental services given the Log Cabin is basically a shell requiring all services be provided. That said, the linens were gorgeous and surpassed my expectations. If only Mary and Dawn didn't have such demanding occupations because they are people we want to continue to know in our lives! read more

Marty and Dawn are super friendly and laid back, not at all pretentious. Marty is clearly a lover of all things food, especially seasonal food. He does some very nice appetizers that incorporate both sweet and salty flavors. If you're in the market for a caterer, especially in the East Bay, give Aurora a call and have a chat with them. If you like what they have to say, set up a tasting and see for yourself what they have to offer. That's what we did, and it was lots of fun. A casual and laid back setting, a variety of bites, some wine, and some great conversation. They did charge us a fee for the tasting, which is refundable should you hire them, but considering the variety of food we ate, it was worth it. Much cheaper than a tasting menu, or even going out for tapas for that matter. We left very full and satisfied. We ended up hiring a different caterer for our event, but Aurora came in a close second. I just got married a few weekends ago, and Aurora was an absolute pleasure to work with throughout the entire process. We did two tastings with Aurora, both of which were delicious and informative. Dawn helped us with many aspects of our wedding day planning to help things to smoothly, and Marty crafted a delicious menu for us that included Filipino lechon with a blueberry sauce that guests are still raving about. I can't say enough great things about Aurora Catering. They catered our wedding this June (2015) and the entire experience, from planning to food to service was excellent! Trying to find a caterer in the Bay Area can be overwhelming. Dawn and Chef Marty came highly recommended to me and I am so glad I listened to my coordinators advice. Our wedding had 250 people and was at my in-laws home, which means we had to rent EVERYTHING. Dawn thought of every last detail as they had to bring in an entire kitchen! Dawn was so organized and helpful as I had no idea where to begin with all of the rental needs. She visited the site multiple times to make sure we weren't missing anything. She is also very attentive to her e-mails and phone calls; despite her busy schedule she always made me feel like a priority. Dawn was also extremely considerate of our budget. Having a wedding at a private home brings about a lot of unexpected costs and Dawn was always understanding and helpful in finding ways we could save. Even after the wedding, she kept track of all of our rentals to make sure we weren't overpaying for anything and even finding areas where we deserved a refund. She truly went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and I am incredibly grateful. Even more than their amazing planning skills, the food was amazing! The tasting was one of our favorite memories of the entire planning process. Both Dawn and Marty were incredibly generous with everything they let us try and are truly a joy to be around. Aurora Catering has become my family's go-to for amazing, affordable and generous meals during shelter-in-place. Dawn and Marty have made it easy to serve scrumptious, bountiful dinners to my family by offering a wonderful variety of meals, five days a week for pick up or delivery. This week, on Thursday we enjoyed beef bourguignon - cooked perfectly with incredible flavor and depth, along with rice with flavor that was out-of-this-world, and lovely grilled asparagus. Then, on Saturday (meal picked up Friday), we had the tastiest short ribs that melted in our mouths, with hearty mashed potatoes and endless broccoli. Both meals heated up perfectly. Each meal also comes with the best homemade rolls our family has had, as well as dessert of mouthwatering brownies or moist and yummy cookies. The portions are quite generous and the food was restaurant quality. Pick up was easy and socially distant. The price was quite affordable, and they even offer a donation option to provide meals to low-income seniors - which we've been happy to do each time. These meals with Aurora are a win-win-win! Next week, we have already ordered two more meals and can't wait to try them. These will be the highlight of our weekly dinners and I certainly know where I'll go for my next catering need. I was at a wedding above Castro Valley last weekend where these people did the dinner and desserts...I have been to many, many catered functions (I'm old...racking up parties is one of the perks!!) and I have to say that what was served was outSTANDING!! It was a mostly veggie function (I'm not) and what Dawn and Martin came up with was a perfect balance, one dish better than the next. They did a turkey but that was the only meat outside of a couple apps. The 'dressing' was a Farro Risotto with cornbread and I don't know how they did the rich gravy without a touch of carne. Beets, kale, green beans and sweet potatoes all savory and just wonderful. I also was delighted to have Martin share how he made the dishes!! (Sweet potato secret was Alice Water's cilantro and lime juice additions!! that one's going on my Thanksgiving table FOREVER ) If I could give them SIX stars, I would...generous and delicious, all of it...and both of them!! ps...the folks they brought to help were also great, pitching in where ever needed!! I hired Aurora Catering for a corporate event - an elegant retirement party for a senior colleague. Let's start with the food as that should probably be your first point of comparison. The food was fantastic. Dawn helped me select a menu for the event that was diverse, interesting, and what one would expect to see given the nature of the event of the attendees. We selected an elegant tasting menu that included salmon, tuna tartare, lamb and platters that included hearty cheeses, meats, vegetables and other fare. It was very important to me that each item tasted good hot, at room temp, and cold as the evening continued. I tasted every item at the event. Each were great. Chef Marty prepared some of the items before the guests. Guests were able to see a lot of the items prepared fresh. Most importantly, the feedback I received matched my own - guests commented on how great the food tasted and was presented. My favorite was the tuna tartare on a blue corn chip - great tasty and super fresh Cost. Aurora was competitive and fair. I looked at three different competitors and all were roughly about the same. Aurora was cost effective and the amount of food was appropriate given the event. I felt very comfortable with the price paid for the service received. Professionalism. Aurora is a small business, and Dawn has it WELL in hand. I can tell that she cares about the details. She is clearly an experienced manager and pays attention to the details. She checked in regularly during the event, rolled with the punches (events can throw curve balls), paid particular attention to the guest of honor and knew when to stop service briefly for the program element of the party. Anticipating these needs is what makes the difference. Dawn, Marty and their staff were professional in appearance and demeanor. They looked great (yes, sorry that's important) and service was seemless. Dawn was IN CONTROL during the entire event making sure it ran without a hitch. Dawn and Marty are a great team, she's the mastermind behind the decor and event planning while Marty works his magic in the kitchen! I have used them for many occasions, from an informal housewarming party (western themed) with one of the dishes being pulled pork sandwiches (KILLER) to most recent my office Christmas Party, where we had passed appetizers, a buffet for dinner, and passed desserts! Aurora Catering is fantastic! They catered multiple meals for several back-to-back meetings for my organization in early November 2015, including our Board of Trustees meeting. Our Board and other attendees are no easy crowd to please, with multiple food allergies and special food preferences among the group. Aurora handled it professionally and with ease. All of our special requests were met and the food was delicious. Dawn is incredibly organized and eager to please. We originally found Aurora Catering while searching for companies in the Bay area that would suit our needs and budget. Within a day or two we were contacted by Dawn at Aurora and immediately felt like our search was over. She promptly provided us with a list of their services and menu including all of the price ranges to help us make our decision. The variety of their menu along with their ability to tailor their services to our needs won us over. Though we had a small wedding reception of only 35 people, we had a few particular requests that needed special attention. Aurora Catering were very attentive from the start and helped us to develop a menu that would work well with our parties diverse requests. Upon meeting with Dawn at our reception location, she went above and beyond what I would have expected from a typical caterer by surveying the property while giving us very useful suggestions to help stage the proper event. She was very patient and diplomatic in a time when we weren't quite sure as to how to arrange our party. In addition, she suggested a wonderful idea for how we could record all of our attendees with a thumbprint tree signature poster that we will cherish forever, thanks Dawn! When preparing the selection, Aurora Catering arranged a tasting for us at their location and provided a wonderful sampling of options while introducing us to the talented and charming chef, Marty. Again, we knew we had made the right choice with Aurora. Marty is a skilled and passionate chef that travels Europe in search of new and enticing selections to add to the Aurora menu. Throughout the months of planning our wedding event, Dawn and the people at Aurora Catering were incredibly attentive and helpful in guiding us through the process. They were especially focused on the details of our unique event while helping us to select all the needed rental accessories with their provided partners. On the night of the event, the scene looked even better than I could have imagined and the food was wonderful! Marty's brussel sprouts and potato au gratin received many compliments from our guests and everyone really enjoyed all of the food. Dawn was great behind the scenes, keeping things on track, even when we were clueless as to what we were doing. She never seemed stressed or anxious and always had a relaxed and confident demeanor. During the reception, she was seamless in her managing of the typical wedding party chaos. At the start of dinner, I was too distracted to eat and at one point, Dawn encouragingly put a plate of food in my hand so that I would sit down and enjoy my dinner. Much appreciated Dawn! The staff that was provided by Aurora Catering was very warm and comfortable to be around. They instantly felt like close friends and more than a catering service . We were very happy with the service they provided. If you're looking for really nice, down to earth people, who can get the job done, this is your crew! Whether you are having a small event or a large wedding, I know the people at Aurora Catering are willing and capable to help you accomplish any goal you may have in mind. I would do this again, and only wish I could. We had such an amazing and wonderful reception!
