So I'm a total rookie when it comes to comic books. I've seen the movies, and I have geeky friends, so I know a little bit beyond that about various series, but I've never had my own comic books, though I've always been intrigued. My mother was in town, and I had been saying I wanted to go to a comic book store and just check it out. She was more than agreeable, so we went. After taking pictures with the Hulk, I began to browse. It was overwhelming to say the least. Someone came by and offered help, which I gladly accepted. I explained that I was new to this, and she assured me that they had all started that way. I told her I'd like to start with the X-Men, and she took me to the trade section, then the manager, Brandon gave me a breakdown of some good places to start. I got one of the books and then went back and got a single comic because I didn't want to leave without one. The trade books were 10%, so it basically covered the cost of my comic book. My mom got a blank book for one of her students to draw in, and we left. Because it was fun, friendly, seemed to have a good selection, and had photo opps with Hulk and Silver Surfer, I'm giving it a 5. I'll be back! read more

This place was much bigger than I thought it was! Tons of books, toys and t-shirts and a huge Incredible Hulk waiting for you in the back. (Great place for stocking stuffers!!) Extensive selection with some books specifically for younger kids. I would prefer they have the books arranged by targeted age range. From the outside, most all comic books look bright and cheery and it's hard to tell which have inappropiate content for younger kids. My 7 yr old kept being drawn to the covers of books for older teens... We *really* came here to look for Sci Fi for my husband. I don't know what they had but it wasn't his cup of Sci Fi tea. He usually spends eons looking around in most book stores but here he was done in just a few minutes. The kids, however, were quite content to move in and set up camp. read more

While this place could do with a little more organization, the selection is quite diverse. The staff was quite helpful when I was overwhelmed by the selections in crates. Now, perhaps, this was because I am a young female. But, I'd like to think that every patron who walks in gets the same phenomenal customer service. I ended up walking out with ten more comics I planned, whereas my companion came out with a giant stack of manga. I probably haven't been to Austin Books and Comics in 5 years or so and how have they changed. That location used to be real small. But since I was last there they took out the back wall and added alot more space. They carry alot of new comics, books, graphic novels, action figures, t-shirts, etc. I popped in there looking for Doctor Who action figures. They didn't have any. But I did buy about $30 in comics for TV shows I didn't know were being made into comics. And to top it off I found an Angel vampire puppet I was looking for that I never would have guessed they'd carry. If you haven't been to Austin Books in awhile, go back. I bet you'll find something to buy. read more

I can't believe I used to shop at Dragons Lair. I went to Austin Books and comics after Dragons Lair didn't have Spider-Man/Deadpool in store - at all. Best decision I've ever made!! The staff at Austin Books & Comics is incredibly helpful. On two separate occasions: Ty gave me a rundown on the differences of the Venom runs, recommended a good Spider-Man run & helped me special order a Venom collection they didn't have in store. Incredibly knowledgeable and patient for a comic noob (all my experience comes from the animated series and movies.) Cameron answered the phone when I called at 7:43 on a day they close at 8. I asked if they had the 2016 Venom #5 (which of course they did since they have everything). I got there with 5 minutes to spare before they closed and not only did he have the issue set aside, he also helped me pick up the other series all the way through #152!! (It's a totally of ~8 issues but number is weird because comics). He showed no expiration towards me for showing up literally minutes before they closed and they were so efficient I was in and out with all the issues mentioned above BEFORE 8. Their service and selection knocked my socks off. Much much better than the half-assed service I used to get at Dragons Lair. New to comics? This is your place, offering friendly expert staff and an unmatched selection. Comic vet? They'll find you your issue or special order it for you. I've always thought Austin Books & Comics to be top notch. However, they really earned a five-star today! I was trying to make it to their store before close (7 PM), but traffic on HWY 183 wouldn't allow. I called about five minutes before close and asked if I could arrive to make a purchase about six minutes after 7 PM. Without hesitation, the staff said they would stay open for me. Therefore, in addition to the clean and well-organized store, the very competitive pricing, and the friendly staff, I'll add Above and Beyond customer service. read more

And when they didn't have what I wanted (an issue of Mouseguard), they ordered it for me. Sometimes I go here to buy graphic novels because I am nothing but a poser extraordinaire. But the helpful staff is friendly, so I did a little dance on a chair. However, this dance was new and full of kicks. Patrons shied away in horror, until I grabbed one spritely lady, and waltzed right through the door(or). We danced straight out to my car, where I remembered that I forgot to pay. So we danced right back in like a couple of cats, where an employee was inclined to say. Austin Books and Comics is the best store of its kind in the city. The store seems huge on the inside compared to the outside, and is filled with practically every comic, figure, game, or accessory a geek could want. The store is well organized, the staff is helpful, and more often than not, they exceed expectations when I visit. Every time I've been to ABC, someone has checked on me at least twice to make sure I was doing okay. None of the employees have ever come across as pushy, or high pressure, though. They always seem like they just want to help. Even when I had questions about obscure items, the staff made sure to double check with each other as to whether or not they had the items, and if they didn't, there was always an offer to get them for me. There selection is impressive, too. From floor to high ceiling, this place is stocked with new comics of every genre, plus back issues, vintage items, and a really fantastic kids' section. On one visit, my brother and I were purchasing a comic for kids, written by Jill Thompson. Only when we got to the car did we realize that the book was autographed. Having autographed books is cool, but we were impressed to find that it even extended to their children's collection! The bottom line is that this isn't your stereotypical, dark, messy, exclusive hole in the wall. This place is what a comic shop should be. read more

it's like I died and went to comic book nerd heaven. THIS PLACE HAS EVERYTHING!! I thought Forbidden Planet in NYC was the place to be until I found this place,sooooo close to home! All that your nerd's heart desires is that this store! From graphic novels to anime to toys, to old comics. I found exactly what I was looking for right away! Marvel Zombies, Metaloplyse and something I had been searching for ages: Vertigo Jam! It made me wish I had more money to spend, things weren't pricey either, so I'll be definitely coming back to fullfill my deepest nerd wants and desires. P.S. I'm 41, so I guess reviewing a comic book shop immediately dings my coolness, but I don't care. This is a great shop. They have everything, and the employees are friendly and knowledgeable. A girl who works there didn't laugh when I asked what the whole Scott Pilgrim thing was all about. I like that they also have serious stuff like Spiegleman, Ware, Satrapi, and they even carry McSweeney's, for crying out loud. I just buy the occasional Avengers or Iron Man for nostalgia's sake, and I've been reading the Alan Moore Swamp Thing series (I was strictly a Marvel guy as a kid). Plus I ride my bike there--it's about the only thing that I'm willing to risk life and limb riding on city streets to get to. In fact, I don't allow myself to drive there--trips to Austin B&C are purely a reward for a bike ride. Can't wait until my son is old enough to appreciate comics and we can go together. P.S. despite the name, they don't really sell books, unless the book is a collection of comics, or a comic-based book like Persepolis. It's also worth noting that they have tons of back issues, which is kind of a rarity these days. read more

I got back into comic books a few years ago. I was going to another shop until they closed down. I decided why not go to the biggest shop in town? Austin Books is great. The web based pull service is wonderful. The folks in the shop are helpful. They get everything you want and stuff you didn't know you wanted. I'm not the most informed comics consumer--I just read Watchmen for the first time and have no clue what's going on with Superman these days. (Didn't he die around the same time as Kurt Cobain?) When I read comics as a younger man, it was usually independent/alternative stuff like Evan Dorkin, Daniel Clowes, Chris Ware, etc. 'Twas zombies that led me back to the comic book shops, and after reading the entire Walking Dead saga up to this point, I am hooked on graphic novels and trade collections from Vertigo and Image. Austin Books & Comics is my favorite shop to visit because of their selection of independent comics by the artists I've mentioned above and hundreds more. I've not seen even a shelf devoted to independents in any other shop in Austin, much less the entire section that AB&C boasts. They have all the other stuff you'd expect--new single issues, back issues, acres of trade paperback collections, nerd figures, nerd t-shirts, and so on. The organization of the store can be hard to grasp, but I don't really care. When I go, I always plan to spend a couple hours there, so I don't mind wandering. If you're looking for something quick, just ask. read more

I'll be really honest with you here: I'm a nerd, so I won't give a bad rating to a half-decent comic book store. This one is pretty awesome though, and the entire shopping center, including their Dunny/Art Toy store and classic toy store are like a playground for me. I think the toys are a little higher priced at this store, but that's because I'm a cheap nerd that gets my toy pricing from Ebay rather than retail stores... but I love it either way. I spoke to several of the staff and they were all very friendly and helpful. I was greeted immediately upon walking in the store and I like that. One of the staff saw me admiring their giant hulk statue and asked if I would like a picture with it and of course, I said yes. They have an impressive collection of collectibles and other comic related items much to numerous to list. They have four stores total all in the same shopping area that have different names and specialties. Definitely worth a trip if you enjoy this type of stuff. My husband has been let down quite a bit with the comic book stores we've encountered the past few years. From southern to northern California they're just too small or way overpriced, or the staff is unknowledgable. We walked in here and I could instantly tell that he was relieved to find a comic book shop he could finally frequent. Yes it is an hour away from us, but we plan to be in this area pretty often. The staff is very friendly, greeted us right away and asked several times if we needed any assistance. The place is well organized and according to my husband everything is moderately priced. They have a huge model of "The Hulk" that lots of people have fun taking pictures of or with. The parking lot is kind of weird....you back up onto the main street. About time I reviewed this place, as I'm in here at least twice a month. When it comes to comics, I tend to eschew super hero titles. I don't find them the least bit interesting: everyone knows the super hero will prevail due to his super powers and unswerving dedication to justice, etc. BFD. Show me an average person thrown into an decidedly NON average situation, and let's see how they do. Austin Books and Comics has everything comic related you could ever want. Countless current titles and a large selection of old titles that haven't been seen in years. I actually found a science fiction magazine that I had last owned in 1977! These days my taste in comics tends to run toward the somewhat bloody and gory, which all are located on one shelf. They seem to group all my stuff together. This is either good marketing, of done in the hope that the big biker gore freak will buy his titles and get the f**k out before he scares the nerds. Either way, I'm happy. read more

Fantastic. Fantastic. Fantastic. I make a point of visiting comic book stores in the cities I visit and jumped on the 801 bus from Downtown to make the trip to this one. And it was so worth it! This is one of those shops that you dream about - super friendly staff, lots of back issues, lots of books you haven't heard of, plenty of space to move between racks, and just a chill atmosphere. I've been shopping at Austin Books for 10 years and it's one of the best comic book stores in the country. No question. The staff are helpful and friendly. The store is nice and clean (and doesn't smell like cat urine **cough** nameless other store in town **cough**). The overall size of the store has grown tremendously over years (so much so that it's actually possible to get lost inside) and it's very inviting to new readers. The selection is enormous (one of the best indie sections I've seen and a manga section that continues to grow). When other stores are sold out of a book, chances are very good that AB has a bunch of copies. They also carry toys, shirts and other comic-related stuff. I've been to comic book stores in 11 states and know all the local stores in town. Austin Books is the leader, they earn my business every Wednesday and they continue to be the store to beat. read more

Color me impressed! I like visiting comic book stores when I visit any city. Sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised. But in the case of Austin Books and Comics I was downright shocked at the incredible amount of stock available and the size of the retail space. Anyone who's ever visited more than a few comic book stores realizes that most will have a niche or two - well stocked new books or well stocked back issues for example. Some will have a large amount of gaming. Others will have an impressive amount of TPB. This store seems to have a lot of everything. I didn't have enough time to look at everything I wanted to look at, but what I did see was impressive. I found a few back issues from the mid-80s that I'd been looking for (and was ready to buy on eBay). I also picked up a couple of variant covers (that aren't always available at my local comic book store). The toy and statue sections were also very impressive. I don't know how else to say it - the store is freakin' HUGE. Obviously I've only had one experience, but the staff was friendly and helpful. As I stood there slacked jawed at least two of them came to ask if I needed help. The one time I did have a question, I got my answer quickly. I don't live in Austin, but if I did, this would be my LCBS. If for no other reason than I could spend all day looking through their stuff. read more

I like it a lot! They have a ton of back issues and usually always have the first issue which a lot of shops seem to be missing. I don't know his name but he is pretty knowledgeable if you have questions, he's usually at the register. They are pretty well stocked and have a lot of indie comics, most of which are kind of dark, gritty, or horror related - not many places do and that's what I am usually looking for! The staff always seems pretty friendly and will ask you if you need help when they walk past. I've never had any issues with them being unfriendly or anything. If anything that seem a lot more helpful than some other shops I've been into. My only issue is that parking can be a pain when it is busy and it can get kind of cramped in there when there's a lot of people. read more

Most visits are great fun due to the fun mix of customers, comics and memorabilia. They provide a great environment for finding new stuff, which is the most important thing in a bookshop. Staff is *usually* helpful. Sometimes when asking for assistance there can be an exasperation in the reply - 'you didn't know that?!' - that can make a person feel unwelcome. Prices are OK but in general I'm coming in to browse and find something new - so if they aren't the lowest that's OK. Parking can be a challenge on Saturdays. read more

This is my favorite comic shop in Austin and favorite shop of all time, anywhere. The selection is ace. What is cool is that I don't even have to ask this store to pre-order some of the more indie books. They are always already there! Every time I have been here the staff have treated me well and have even offered good suggestions. While I am buying a book, they will suggest (but not pressure-sell) other books by the same authors/artists. Knowledge! I love it. They are far better than Amazon's algorithm. My husband is a demanding customer and often asks to see the rare books that are very expensive. The staff bears with him and shows him each book he asks for. I think this is great. I'm getting the shakes - I haven't been to Austin Books & Comics (henceforth referred to as ABC) in three weeks. I made a deal with myself that I wouldn't go until September. My stack of Justice League trades that are sitting next to my bed and waiting to be read is dwindling quickly. I'm pining. ABC is a magical place, with seemingly endless rows of fantasy brilliance. It's almost overwhelming. Through the vast seas of selection there are trades, single issues, shirts, figurines, assorted geekery, and so much more. Oh, the glory! *Sips coffee out of her Wonder Woman mug* Spending an early afternoon combing the shelves of ABC is sure to turn up some wonderful finds. The staff is knowledgeable and, maybe more importantly, they'll admit when they don't know something and find someone who does. I recommend 'liking' or 'following' them on your social networking site of choice and they'll keep you informed with events and new product. *Sets an Outlook Calendar reminder for the new Anita Blake release date* Now, comics is a crazy business and despite the thousands of comics weighing down ABC's shelves, there have been a small handful of times where the trade I wanted was not in stock. The staff will special order any in-print trade for you and call you when it arrives to the store. *Victory Dance* I hate having to order something online when I can get it from a great, local establishment like this one. They commonly run sales and/or open up The Sidekick Store to sell discounted stock. My one complaint: They aren't open late enough!! Actually, I'm pretty sure they're doing me a favor by closing at 7:00/8:00 pm. Maybe they close early then don masks and protect the streets of our fair town.
