I feel a little crazy even saying this, but I went in for a general cleaning and they told me I needed 3 fillings replaced. When I said I've never had a filling done, they said I probably just didn't remember. When I asked if there was anything else what they were seeing could be, they said no and then gave me a quote for the re-do. Got home and double-checked my dental records (and called my mom in case it was when I was too little to remember haha), and nope! No fillings! I won't be doing the re-dos, no worries, but I felt like I needed to say something here. My husband went at the same time and had a great experience, so this is just my own review! read more

I would not trust Dr. Tucker's dental opinion. Always get a second opinion - he misled me on a couple of items regarding a molar. Also billing department will overbill you, and not follow up with insurance company on claims, going on 7 months post service. read more

This is how a business should treat people! I had an emergency over a holiday weekend, left a message in voicemail and prepared to suffer through the three day weekend. But, I was wrong! I'm not going to rate this office by entire staff, but we went here, because my husband had a severe tooth ache that had set up infection. We're established patients and didn't think we had anything to worry about. One of the new Doctor's that just started here and has only been in practice for 3 years did the extraction. First off she didn't give not 1 X-Ray she didn't even examine the site she just went straight in and started pushing and tugging to extract his tooth. He told her what tooth was the problem and that was all she needed to know. It was fairly odd because I had never seen a dentist extract a tooth this way. Finally the tooth was extracted she said this is going to feel uncomfortable and she took her sharp instrument and shoved and scraped the inside of gum inside the whole where the tooth was extracted and my husband was in so much pain he kicked his shoes off and cried like a baby and she exited the room to hurry to a meeting and eat Itialian that they had ordered for lunch and he asked for her to come back, because something wasn't right, she came back and gave him more lidocaine and that was all. We had to literally beg for a antibiotic and asked for pain medicine and come to find out she didn't know how to write a prescription, she had to get assistance from another doctor to help write a prescription for Tylenol 3 and amoxicillin after he was in so much pain and I his wife stressed to her that he had infection on the tooth and the and should be on antibiotics. She finally looked concerned, but not too concerned. Now I'm thinking why they didn't just refer us to an oral surgent where we would have been taken care of. read more

I scheduled an appointment to have a front-tooth veneer re-bonded that had fallen off, and they re-bonded with the wrong shade of glue because they only carry that one shade. (I needed white, they only have transparent.) It is now mismatched with my surrounding front teeth and not reversible without breaking the veneer. They did not tell me this beforehand. I had to ask afterwards. Other dentists who have re-bonded my veneers have always gotten it right. They had the shade I needed along with try-in pastes to use for testing before permanently bonding. You assume a dentist cares about important details like your front teeth being the same color. You also assume they have the resources to do their job adequately. He said translucent glue is standard and in hindsight they wouldn't do anything differently. He also said sometimes a veneer/crown may not look the same once it comes off. That has never been my experience, but isn't surprising since they're only using one shade of glue. Last and most predictably, he said the difference was subtle, which I found so minimizing of my experience. The difference is completely obvious. My family noticed immediately. I felt like he completely dismissed my experience, made it out to be normal, and now I am the one who has to live with it everyday. This situation was 100% preventable. I was happy with my teeth before and wish more than anything I had gone to a different dentist. Just be aware this is a dentist who finds it normal and acceptable for a patient to walk out of their office with mismatched front teeth. (Note: The hygienists here are wonderful. This review has nothing to do with them.) read more

I went in with a very old crown that was causing me problems. This crown had been on their watch list but now I had to deal with it. Xrays and exam discovered decay under the tooth which meant potentially losing the tooth or a root canal to try and save the tooth which is what we decided. Dr. Fossum did the procedure. 3.5 hours later I have a temporary cap and a successful root canal. Not fun but they practiced good dental medicine with no surprises. I am an RN and was curious how they would handle the pain medication following the procedure knowing I would never take an oxycontin due to the research I had read recently that 2 ibuprofen and 1 acetaminophen actually works better than a controlled substance. Dr. Brent Fossum followed this evidence based medicine and handed me the three pain tabs described above. I was pleased and thankful. Three days post root canal I am doing great and really only needed one additional dose of pain medication that first night. Back to work the next day - Happy patient. read more

I had an appointment as a new patient for myself and my two sons to get exams and cleaning. I've had many fillings/crowns in my life due to never being taught to brush as a kid and possible genetics as well, which is why I've always kept on my boys to floss & brush twice a day. Used a timer & everything lol. They both used fluoridated toothpaste their entire lives up until a few years ago. Recently I've decided to stop using fluoride toothpaste, and my younger son, age 15, has followed suit. So here's my problem: when my son told them to please not use the fluoride gel on his teeth, it was as if a silent alarm went off in the office that they had a possible neglectful parent or the like. The news obviously traveled quickly. His hygienist came back and wanted me to verify, looking almost shocked and seriously overly-concerned. My hygienist talked to me about the safety etc of fluoride for a good 10 minutes, then after leaving the room for something she came back and launched back in for a second time, repeating herself. I can understand their position. One mention would have sufficed. Our last dentist in another state actually told ME that she wasn't going to do the fluoride treatment on my son, which I was fine with, obviously. There were no smiles from either dentist, just a very serious look from my son's Dr and a somber (judgmental) "How long has it been since [your son] has seen a dentist?" (It had been two years.) Then there's the constant texts, emails and/or phone calls "reminding" me to make an apt to get a 2nd filling done for my kid. We were able to get one cavity filled but had to wait on the second (which btw our new dentist could barely see and wouldn't even call a cavity.) People do the best they can with the recourses they have. Sometimes people kick A$$ with the resources they have. Sometimes there are unexpected life events that take precedence over getting a cavity filled!! When I finally opted out of the texts a few months later, I began getting phone calls and messages from annoyed receptionists who sounded more like debt collectors than a Doctor's office. NEWSFLASH: I'll call you when I want to make an apt. Sheesh. Next thing you know dental offices will be threatening parents with arrest for child neglect if they don't bring their kids to the dentist! - Oh wait a minute, that's already happening in some states. I had my family's charts sent to our new dentist weeks ago and I'm still getting "reminder" phone calls from this office. Enough. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Tucker's skill, "chairside manner," and compassion. Our adult son had a very serious dental/medical situation due to poor dental care from another dentist in town. It was a very complicated case, which involved an oral surgeon, bone grafts, and two years of appointments. It was a real roller coaster ride, but just this week, that journey ended with our son leaving Dr. Tucker's office with beautiful, perfectly fitted and matched, permanent implants. What my son went through is the sort of thing that puts a person off the dentist's chair for life, but Dr. Tucker's approach, his undeniable skill, and his warm personality won my son over. Our whole family now goes to Austin Family Dentist. We love Dr. Tucker. He's funny and warm. He's a good communicator, and his attention to detail saved our son's smile. Dr. Fossum is great, he has seen me a few times but this last week I was in need of a root canal and was 40 weeks pregnant. I decided to wait until delivery and then get it done. They reassured me everything we were doing was good for breastfeeding moms and I told them I needed to be home in 3 hours to feed again. He was very caring of my situation and got me in and out of quick as possible. I felt like I was given grade A treatment. I have been going to Austin Family Dentist since moving to Austin in 2013. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Tucker. He is a great dentist and I feel very comfortable having him work on my teeth. My teeth are super sensitive and the dental hygienist that clean my teeth make certain to numb my sensitivity as much as is possible prior to cleaning my teeth. Literally as we pull into the parking lot - noon - they call telling us everyone is going to lunch? Um... WTF? We just got there... PRECISELY because you called and told us to come. "Well, if you showed up in 10-15 minutes (e.g. 11:45 am) we could have seen you!" (1) Hey, cool policy.... how about you actually tell people that when you call them and ask them to come in. (2) And then what, you would have looked at us for 15 minutes, then closed up shop mid-appointment to go to lunch?? I write very few reviews, but this is one of the dumbest, most idiotically run business encounters I've ever ever come across. I would rather eat a bowl of scorpions than go to the dentist. But a dental emergency made it necessary, so I picked Dr. Tucker from a list and hoped for the best. I didn't realize how traumatized I was ( from the last dentist I had been to) until I got there. Dr. Tucker and his staff were very understanding and didn't make me feel embarassed for being a wimp. I found AFD through yelp/my insurance provider...this can always be a sketchy combination. I have entensive mouth issues which is why I have had the same dentist for years and years. I moved to Austin but continued to go to my dentist in Minnesota whenever I went to visit family. Dedication. I recently realized I needed a dentist in Austin and I couldn't be happier with AFD. When I arrived in the morning they were cleaning the pens!!! Being a germ freak I couldn't be happier to see them cleaning those little things that everyone uses. Thank you. The office is very technologically up-to-date and I was super impressed with my entire process. They understood all my mouth problems and I felt very comfortable with the dental hygentist as well as Dr. Lizabeth de la Cruz. The staff of Austin Family Dentist makes the experience of going to the dentist office something I look forward to instead of dreading. I never thought that could be possible. They are all wonderful there! I was referred to AFD over 5 years ago when I went to Omni Dental and was told I needed to have 2 cavities filled on teeth that had never bothered me, for a huge sum of money. Dr. Tucker took a look at the 2 teeth and determined that the fillings were unnecessary and saved me a lot of money, and turned me into a patient that will keep coming back! Since then I have had several procedures and all gave been affordable and done well. When one did not heal correctly at first, Dr. de la Cruz saw me at least 3 times with no charge to fix the issue. They take care of their patients and ensure they are comfortable while they are there. I recommend them to everyone I know! read more
