Hello, I'm sorry to make this review of a doctor at this establishment, and honestly, the office as a whole at this point. I came here in early 2019, and later in this last year, the service done here caused me further injury. For some background, I received a full mouth rehabilitation in another country, Istanbul, and it went sour. The way my row of teeth was positioned caused TMJ symptoms and strained muscles. I didn't trust them to go back to them to fix it, hell, as of six months later, they had erased my info anyway. When I visited Balcones Family Dental in October 2024, I had already gotten four teeth replaced from my full mouth rehab and one root canal, and was showing slight TMJ symptoms. When Christopher Glecos agreed to work on me, he offered an occlusal equilibration to straighten my bite. I should have vetted harder, because I had no idea he was then taking online classes for the thing I was asking for. At the time, my mouth has already been through a lot, and the process of strengthening my bite required more professional diligence than what I received. Doctor Glecos wanted to start fresh and not look at any of my background on the matter. I did give my info anyway, a told him I was going to see a chiropractor for my TMJ. At the time, I thought it would be enough, but I was wrong. Knowing now, I needed Physical Therapy and a specialist trained in TMJ symptoms. Even with all the background I gave him, he was still willing to do the occlusal equilibration even though his experience was green in the matter, and if he had thought otherwise, I'd have been referred to someone else. There's no way one would take on a complicated situation as mine if one was still only taking online classes for it... I explained that my goals were to address bite instability by identifying problem areas and finding a good course of action. For me, this meant combing through the teeth and seeing which ones were hitting harder and by how much, and then considering new crowns for those problem areas. Dr. Glecos described using 'slits of paper' to relax the bite and then find out where in the mouth my teeth were misaligned or hitting first. At no time did we discuss making irreversible adjustments to the bite. I was under the impression that we would take measurements of the teeth to see which ones needed attention. The time came for measurements, after the 'slits of paper' method, he started altering the bite with a bur. I did not expect the procedure to begin at that time, as I believed we were still in the evaluation phase. I allowed it since he had already started grinding at the bite, placing my trust in him. After several sessions, eventually I woke up with new symptoms. Nerve pain was shooting down my legs, and muscle strain, and eventually a chronic sinus infection. When expressing these symptoms on the day I was receiving my night guard, I was told to go to a general physician, and the dentist wasn't even going to be called in until I notified the ladies at the front desk. During the examination, Dr. Glecos stated he did not see any issues and offered to make additional adjustments. Given the new symptoms, I declined further alteration. He then indicated there was little else he could do. When I described the symptoms as nerve-related, I was told that adjustments were made on crowns rather than natural teeth and therefore, should not cause nerve symptoms. It was concluded that my symptoms were 'Underlying issues'... I feel the possibility of nerve issues can arise from a destabilized bite around the jaw joint. My TMJ issues were a focal point in our consultation, and I hoped for a more thorough evaluation or referral. For my symptoms, pain was traveling down my leg, my feet, my chest, and through my throat. Never in two places at once, but present every day. This altered the way I walked, and numbness could be felt in my left hand, and eventually, a rapid amount of aging was taking place. Facial deformations started to form under my eyes from a chronic sinus infection. This infection has been plaguing me since the occlusal adjustment. Tinnitus was sounding loudly from my right ear, the side with the TMJ issue. Also, there were medical reports given of these symptoms as well. Afterwards, I went to many other professionals and specialists seeking a root cause. These things usually take time; referrals have to be shipped out from my General Doctor, and acquiring an appointment within three months' time for some of these places was rare. My symptoms were getting better in some areas, but also getting worse. On a return visit six months later for a cleaning (I continued to work with them and report my symptoms), I was finally referred to a prosthodontist to check my bite. The hygienist at the time actually pushed the issue of seeing a specialist right away for a suspected collapsed bite. Given the timing of my symptoms, I am concerned that an earlier referral may have allowed for a timely assessment. I did read more

Do not go to this practice. They quoted me for $400 which, I paid. Balcones Family Dental later sent me a bill for $1200 stating they never worked with my insurance before and messed up on quoting me. I contacted the BBB and the dentist refuses to respond. Do not trust them! They will scam you. read more

I have had two wonderful experiences at BFD. Dr Maddox is very nice and communicates very clearly. The hygienists are able to give you their full attention. I learned a lot about my teeth both times. The problem lies in that they do not contract with any insurance company, therefore you will always be covered at the out-of-network rate. This is frustrating for patients, but is understandable from the practice's perspective. When you make this decision, however, your front-office needs to be very good at letting people know exactly how much they're going to owe out of pocket. It is possible for them to call your insurance company, tell them what codes they'll likely claim, and get an amount covered back. Twice I asked them to do this, and twice they told me how much I'd owe out of pocket after the visit. Both times they WILDLY missed the mark, to the tune of over $100 per visit. This also happened with my children. After they visited, my wife said they mislead or understated our responsibility (perhaps on purpose) to get us in the door as new patients. We hadn't discussed it until I brought up my experience after the fact. Two customers with the same experience in the same house. Hmmmmm.... My family of four has now found another dentist who a) contracts with our insurance, and b) was able to tell us our responsibility ahead of time, to the penny. Please avoid this place if cost is a consideration for you. If it's not, good for you! In that case BFD is a really great dental practice! read more

If I could give 6 stars I would. There is nothing these guys could do better so my advice would be to just keep doing what you're doing. The staff are the most friendly people you could hope to meet. Last time I was here they hovered a TV over my head as I was having fillings done and gave me headphones to watch the Man United vs Arsenal match, I was genuinely disappointed when Dr. Maddox told me he was done as I was having such a nice time lying on my back in a really comfy chair taking in the game, I was basically a beer short of being in the pub. Shout out to Rhonda who is lovely and a brilliant dental hygienist and Dr. Maddox himself of course who's absolute priority whilst you're in his care is to complete the work to the highest standard whilst causing minimum discomfort. I travel 30 minutes to come to this dentist but it's well worth the journey and I wouldn't consider anywhere closer. I'm now well on top of my dental health after having all of my teeth scaled / planed and having several fillings. Really can't recommend this place highly enough. Thanks guys! read more

Dr. Maddox extracted 2 wisdom teeth in Jan/ 21 After about 2 weeks I began having severe pain and inflamation in my jaw and face. I expressed my worry of possible infection and asked for antibiotics, Maddox refused to prescribe them. After 2nd follow up I was assured there was no problem and everything was healing fine and I was diagnosed with TMJ. Then was prescribed tramadol and steroid dose pack and referred to an oral surgeon who I was unable to schedule with until 6wks later, I could not get Maddox to reach out to the surgeons office on my behalf to get an urgent care visit. During the FEB freeze and snow my pain became unbearable and I communicated with Maddox at this time. I feel like he simply thought I was fishing for pain medications and he just waved me off and said my care was now out of his hands and left me on my own. After the freeze I finally was able to explain my situation to an oral surgeon and they got me in right away. Low and behold I had in fact devoloped a life threatening bone infecion, I was lucky I got in to see some one when I did. From there I was referred to an internal infectious disease specialist for ultra high dose antibiotic treatment for the next 3 months. It is 4th of July and I still can not feel half of my face or my jaw and teeth on that side of my mouth. We did finally get the infection under control. But the damage done by the severe infection might last for years if not forever. It is in my and many others opinions (other dentist also) that Maddox was negligent by denying me antibiotics when he was asked for them early on. Had I gotten antibiotic treatment back in early Feb as requested it would have killed the infection before it got out of control. I could have died, the infection was that severe. I have documented in writing, between Maddox and myself, that I was worried about infection early on. I don't understand why he refused to prescribe a harmless antibiotic "just in case " his failure led to worst case for me. Use this dentist at your own risk. read more

Hands down the best healthcare business I've ever patronized. Absolutely everyone I have ever had any interaction with their has been lovely. The front office people are always smiling and helpful, my dental hygienist is top notch, and Dr. Maddox is always engaging, friendly, and interested in knowing about my life and my health in general. I've moved 45 minutes away, and there are 20 dentists in my area, but I would rather travel to them! read more

Bait and switch and unexplained charges. After having my teeth cleaned I came back for a cavity. I was told how much the procedure would be before hand so I was more than a little disappointed when the procedure was more than $100 more than what I had been told. They explained the procedure took longer than they had thought. No problem, I paid the bill and left. A week later I get a bill in the mail for another $121. I've called and complained and asked for a break down of the charges but they have yet to comply. There are plenty of honest reliable dentist in Austin, do yourself a favor and stay clear of Balcones Family Dental. read more

I wouldn't give it any stars if I could. When I went and saw the dentist he told me that since his place was a "high class establishment" I should go somewhere else. That he does not assist people like me. I somehow have a collection of $107 that no one has advised me about nor did they contact my insurance as it seems. I have contacted them numerous times and no one has gotten back to me.I have placed reviews of this establishment before and it has been deleted. I have never felt more "at home" at a dentist. And I've been in the dentist chair getting real work done since I was 7 due to a major auto accident. This is a wonderful, and professional team from the front desk to the hygienist to Dr. Lonsberry. Low pressure, and not trying to sell you. But of course like any well run dental practice should, they will ask you if you are happy with your smile, and if not, they can provide solutions. They are up to date with technology, and reminders as well. The staff are happy. To have this place in my neighborhood is definitely a blessing!! read more

Beware, this review is pretty long, but I feel like just writing "greatest dentist in Texas" and leaving it at that is just not going to get the point across. In a modern world where customer service and simple kindness has become very hard to come by, I believe the staff at this practice should get the recognition they deserve. I've been a patient of Dr. Lounsberry since I was very young and he was at his 183 location. You could say that going to the dentist is not on the top of my "favorite things to do" list, but I can honestly say that every time I walk in his office, I am so happy my parents brought me to his practice growing up. I consider myself one of the lucky ones because I have had the pleasure of calling him my dr for so long, but it makes me even more sure of my decision to continue using his practice when I hear about the experiences the people I refer have with his staff. They are truly a stand up crew, I'll go ahead and elaborate below- Let start with the front desk staff. I unfortunately lived in New York for 8 years and had a huge lapse in my visits to their office. While they didn't remember my name right off the bat, they actually recognized me when I walked back in for the first time. That made me feel really special and you better believe that after that they are saying hi and calling me by my first name every time I walk in the door, even when I walk in without an appointment. You ladies should be told everyday how welcome y'all make people feel and how appreciative the people you come in contact with are for y'alls genuine kindness. Moving on to the next team members you come in contact with, the dental assistants. Earlier I mentioned how I am not a fan of the dentist, and I just need to clarify that I never had anxiety about sitting in that chair until I had to go to a new dentist while living in New York. His staff is so amazing to make sure I never again feel the anxiety I walked in with my first day coming back to this office. The compassion they apply to their day to day work is beyond words and it's even more reassuring to see a few familiar faces from when I went to this office as a child. Finally, let's talk about the ring leader, Dr. Lounsberry. I have never in my life come across a more genuine, caring, positivity oriented person (much less dentist!) in my entire life. This guy knows what he's doing and what makes your experience even better is his efforts to communicate with you throughout your visit about not only what is happening with your teeth, but also the touch of personal conversation he will engage you in. At that point you no longer feel like a patient, but more like a friend. I also really appreciate hearing the positive words he passes on to his team members while they work together. It really shows in their quality of work and the overall aura in the office that they truly feel appreciated when they come to work. That's a very special thing. Dr. Lounsberry is not only an amazing leader, but even better at his craft. His incredibly knowledgeable, yet caring treatment is something everyone hopes for from a health care provider. 100% recommend. read more

Though going to the dentist is never on the top list of fun things to do my experience as a new patient here was a positive one - everyone I encountered was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I appreciated Tiffany finding an appointment for me during what I am sure was a busy week with Thanksgiving and she was awesome at going over pricing and what the first visit would entail. (I did use a special they had for teeth cleaning, exam, and 4 cavity-detecting x-rays for $89...+$10 PPE). I was with Brandi (dental hygienist) for most of the appointment who is amazing. She made sure I was comfortable, explained everything and answered all my questions. They seem to have a great team here! read more

I Pass probably 10 dentists office on the way to Balcones Family Dental. I choose them for their consistently sweet staff, from the front end to the dentists everyone is amazing at their job and seem to really enjoy what they do. The hygienists are all super easy to talk to and non-judgmental. It's sounds weird but I enjoy seeing everyone at this office! They retain staff better than any doctors office I have ever been to. They're also great with children! Highly recommend! read more

The issue is your office is not being honest with patients upfront! If you KNOW you are not in-network with any insurance company, you should advise each patient when they schedule. THAT IS THE HONEST THING TO DO. Instead you choose to share this information after services are rendered and balance bill. You wait until you get what you can get from the carrier and then share the news about coverage with the patient. It is a dishonest practice policy regardless of the patient's responsibility to understand their own policy. Not all of us have daily interaction with insurance company's and medical billing. Crooks define this as "tricks of the trade." read more

I recently had to quickly find a new dentist. A friend recommended Dr. Lounsberry. I got in quickly and can't say enough positive things about this practice from the friendly and extremely helpful staff, especially Lisa, to the dental assistant, Yesi, and especially Dr. Lounsberry. This is the second time I've come in to this dental office and, y'all, let me tell you how happy I am. First visit: I worked with Brandy at first and she's a blast! We were crackin' jokes back and forth; everything was so nice it didn't even feel like I was at the dentist. The entire staff is very kind and patient(and funny, let's be honest). I am currently at my second visit and everyone greeted me by name! Vanessa checked me in before I even said anything and the wait is never long. I'm in today for my first cavity filling and I'm working with Dr. Maddox again and Candace! I explained to Candace my fear of needles and when they went to inject me she reassured me everything was going to be okay and kept patting my shoulder. Overall: very comforting and sweet staff, the facility is very nice and home-y, and I haven't a bad thing to say about them! Horrible staff. I'm a current patient and asked for a simple response via email but they refused to do so. Staff called me at 7:45AM after I specifically told them not to call me! I sent an additional email after that again and they still didn't respond. I've never dealt with a more unprofessional office staff. What if I was deaf and couldn't get phone calls at all? Remember this classic cartoon plot? A character believes there to be a mouse or something behind a wall, so they start by looking suspiciously, prodding around, using tools, then digging, and drilling and eventually taking down the wall and causing the whole building to level. After I left Balcones Family Dental today, my whirlwind experience reminded me just of this ridiculous, scary scene. Let me explain: I came here strictly to have my teeth cleaned and to get a routine exam. I moved to Austin in February and no longer have dental insurance, so I was looking for an affordable option. Balcones offered a valpak introductory coupon for $79. The thing about coupons like those is that there's always a catch... This became very clear as I filled out my new patient paper work and there were multiple areas for enhancement types of questions. I answered "no" to everything. Lee Ann was my hygenist, and she seemed really nice. I explained to her that I never had a cavity in my life and that I was just there to have my teeth cleaned. She took my xrays and said that they looked really good but that she wanted to take pictures to get a better look. I've been to a few different dentists, and this was a first. I offered "my childhood dentist said he was pretty sure I'd never get a cavity!" trying to get her to give up... She proceeded and it seemed obvious she was kind of bummed that my teeth were in good shape and that she was hunting for a problem, so when she said "hmm this gray area looks curious on your back molar" I rolled my eyes and thought "oh here we go." But then she said we'd wait and "see what the dentist thinks" But then she pulled out a "density probe" to check the density of each tooth, triple checking to make sure that she didn't miss any invisible time traveling cavities. Still nothing. I ask her when "the dentist" is going to come. Because quite frankly this is just sad and weird at this point. Okay and as an aside, and not to brag, but I have freakishly GREAT teeth. I realize that I am VERY LUCKY, and I am not saying this to engender ill-will or hatred, buttttt I just want to make it perfectly clear that this whole charade was utter nonsense. So now it really gets good. Dr. Want's To Be Hip comes and tries to make small talk about Brooklyn, where I moved from. And then gets a very serious look on his face and directs his attention to Lee Ann. "let's discuss this gray spot" So they are very nervous in their presentation; their fancy monitor is flashing. The colors are all weird. I don't know who to look at. But "the dentist" gravely stammers that we can't be sure what's under the surface but there could be decay, and really the best thing to do would be to drill through the enamel and either patch it with a sealant or a filling depending on what he finds. Because otherwise I could end up having to deal with a MUCH bigger problem like a ROOT CANAL. me: Jesus Christ. Well couldn't have missed this one... Should I stay and let these sadists clean my teeth? What do I do? Should I let on that I'm not an idiot? "Hmm. Well let me talk to my parents about it." They tell me that's fine. "The Dentist" says they'll go ahead and book the appointment for me anyways, but I should definitely go and get a second opinion. I let Lee Ann do my cleaning, praying all the while that she wasn't like doing any irreversible damage to me. The cleaning itself was the SOLE purpose for my visit and was not particularly thorough but I at least do not feel that my teeth were harmed in the process. Aside from everything I wrote above, the office did seem really clean, and it was also quite large. I just would be extremely wary about coming here as a new patient. They did not seem trustworthy at all. read more

I went to this dentist for two reasons: 1) It was near where I lived. 2) I called and was told they accepted my insurance. Pros: 1) Office is clean 2) Staff is friendly.. though sometimes they lay it on so thick it comes across as fake Cons: 1) My sister and I had back to back appointments. We were there FIVE HOURS for cleaning/exam only. And that is including my sister not even getting a cleaning as they stated she had gum disease, and including me denying x-rays. Staff there wouldn't. stop. talking. 2) Did I mention 5 hours for two (actually, one) cleanings? 3) Both the dentists (we each saw a different one) and hygienists tried to sell us all kinds of crazy things, from sleep studies to bleaching trays and cosmetic procedures. Pass. 4) A few weeks after my appointment, imagine my surprise when I received a bill from Balcones Family dental for over half a grand. Apparently whoever told me over the phone they take my insurance was full of it. When I called (again) to question the bill, I was told they are NOT in-network with ANY dental insurance. Seriously?? And they do not accept any type of payment plans. Typical. If you don't mind paying hundreds of dollars and sitting in a dental chair for 2.5+ hours for a basic cleaning, this is the place for you. Otherwise, there are much better practices out there. I will not be back. read more

I went here to get just a normal cleaning and exam with a Groupon I bought. The cleaning was extremely rough and I practice great oral hygiene (my grandfather is a dentist). When the Dentist came into my exam room, he proceeded to immediately let me know that he could "Fix My Smile". Seriously? ? Is this a joke? I was so offended I could barely contain myself!! How Rude!!! All I wanted to do was leave. As I was with the receptionist (just trying to pay and leave), she continued to carry on and on about how they could "Work With Me" on a payment plan to fix my smile. $12,000??? These people need a lesson in mutual Respect! I have none for them! read more

I have been a patient here since they were over on 183, and can't say enough good things about the work they have done through the years for me and my family. Nothing fails, nothing, cleanings with Chris are super gentle and I feel great when leaving. They treat you like family! And, just this week had an inlay from 20 or so years ago (pre balconies) that popped out. Dr. Maddox saw me the next day, checked it out and got it back in place. Its rare, but in this case wish I could give them 6 stars. read more

So glad I found Dr. Lounsberry's A#1 dental office. My dentist retired and it's not so easy to find a new one right off the bat where you feel confident they've got you covered and they really care about your dental health and needs. I found all that at the Balcones Family Dental office. Dr. Lounsberry is patient and thorough and wants you to understand all about your upcoming care.
