My 11 year old son and I went to see "A Tuna Christmas" last night at the Sam Bass theatre!! What…read morean fabulous show! Two guys play the roles of the whole cast! So funny, we laughed so much! The scene changes were cleverly done and the costume changes for each character were brilliant! The actors never mixed up any of the 21 characters that they played between them. We felt like we had seen 21 different characters in the play. No one missed a line, and here were LOTS of lines! I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone! I had never been to the Sam Bass theatre before and for those who haven't you're in for a real treat! There are 52 seats! Everyone has a great view! There is a little bar area to the left of the theatre where they offer drinks, including wine and beer. Take cash in smaller denominations as it is cash only and the suggested "donation" for drinks start with sodas for one dollar. At the interval there were some little snacks to eat, a fruit platter, cheese and crackers etc, this was complimentary, very generous and welcomed by all! All in all we had a memorable evening and we both absolutely loved it. Thank you to the Sam Bass Theatre, we will be back!!

I saw Raped Clarity at the Gemini and was fairly impressed with the space and how they use it. When…read moreyou first enter, you arrive at a very professional ticket and snack counter, and paintings and photographs by a local artist adorn the walls. I enjoyed a nice Malbec while surveying the works, which seemed to exemplify a simple, contemporary style infused with elements of pop culture - such as you would find in greeting cards and cartoons. Some of them were quite clever, and even the photographs somehow speak to the modern style and popular ambitions of this theatre's proprietor. Despite my fine first impression, there were quite a few problems. Seating is unfortunately folding, metal chairs - but at least they were the padded kind. The stage itself was quite good - raised a foot or so above the floor, with adequate space and entrance portals, and decent sound - but the lighting was barely adequate and could not possibly be useful in most, true theatrical productions. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of Raped Clarity was marred by the lack of quality lighting. Finally, the script itself has problems, with incongruities that tend to distract one's attention as the action unfolds. Glaring examples include an inconsistent, unprofessional, and even unethical psychologist character. If this were a minor, peripheral character, perhaps the problem would not exist or it might be insignificant, but this is a central character that helps drive the action throughout the heroine's journey. Some minor problems with props may have simply been mistakes during the particular performance I attended, and these might not necessarily be blocking and choreography errors. The dialogue, in general, is problematic, with some vocabulary and word choices that seem inconsistent with the characters who deliver them and the situations in which they are delivered. By far the best performance in this production was that of the heroine's father, an archetypal southern working man and alcoholic. This character functioned as both an anti-hero and comic relief, and was oddly endearing. The heroine's mother was also a good performance, and contributed some fine, comic moments, but the character was fraught with some of the aforementioned dialogue problems. Raped Clarity is a work in progress and may very well be autobiographical, representing the author's sorting out of her own psyche after experiencing rape. I find, in fact, that the only way that I can reconcile the various characters and situations of this play is to consider them as symbolical. Indeed, I conclude that each character and situation represents an aspect of the heroine's - and perhaps the author's - own mind as she works toward recovery after a violent rape. This is the only way Raped Clarity makes any sense to me.

Such an eclectic company with superb multiracial actors, creative directing and adaptations! What's not to love?

This summer it was Bring it On and past shows included Shrek, The Little Mermaid, Legally Blonde, Newsies, Hairspray and others. You can come early before the show and place your blanket down on the hillside to reserve your spot. It is a great location to watch an outdoor performance or show. The Zilker Hillside is an outdoor amphitheater venue located on a hillside in Zilker Park with a large stage, ample lighting capability, amenities, and location next to Barton Springs Pool and is the perfect spot for a dance recital, symphony or cultural event. Visitors are allowed to bring food and non-alcoholic beverages. The theater also has a concessions stand on site offering snacks and drinks. There are restrooms available. No dogs are allowed unless they are service dogs.

I actually have seen their show touring and think this production did it better. Bathrooms at the park they have inside ones and also a few porta potty's that are very close by. There are more handicap accessible spots right in the front of the stage and all other seating is on the hill. Bring your blanket or low rise chairs (can be difficult for people to see over regular lawn chairs). We brought a small picnic to enjoy and lots of people brought food they ordered to eat before/during the show. The sound quality and level is excellent. We were more off to the right side on the stage and could still see fairly well and could hear everything perfectly. They do have plenty of trash cans around so please clean up after yourself. At the merch/sales table they have programs and surveys that help them with data for grants and benefits by showing who makes up their expansive audience. The night I was there they did a drawing for a gift card if you filled out an information slip and I actually won a BookPeople gift card! Please buy something/tip/add money to the actors buckets that come around so that they can continue to provide awesome, quality free entertainment to the community. I've seen Extragrams do a surprise drop-by with a drag queen doing a drag telegram (virtually at that during a video call) and it was the most grandest thing to see. As a few months went by, I recently had the chance to see them in action hosting a live drag bingo night I attended and the comedy from the drag artist, Celia Light, was superb and A-star quality. I found myself laughing so hard because they were so dumb and knew how to get the crowd going. They are perfect for creating some priceless memories and I'll be booking them myself soon enough.

They 100% know how to surprise and make you smile - and dance!…read more My first experience with Extragrams was when my bestie surprised me after I was simply having a bad week and not feelin' myself. She lifted my spirits with Extragrams, who showed up at my gate as I was leading a video team call. It was epic... I brought along my laptop so my team could witness the surprise at my door. I had SUCH a memorable moment that I booked Extragrams for a friend's birthday party since I couldn't be there in person. My friend to this day says that was the best gift he'd ever received! And to my surprise, he'd never seen a drag performance prior to Extragrams poppin' his cherry! If you want an epic gift for a friend or entertainment for a party, funciton, gathering... go with Extragrams. Important to note: Extragrams now services Houston, which is what these two experiences and review are based on.

Tonight I went to see the Heartbreaks vs. the Hustlers. This was the first time I attended this…read moretype of event. The level of excitement at this venue was through the roof. At the venue, fans can have a close up experience with the Rollergirls and are able to get play by play commentary from the M.C. There really isn't a bad seat in this venue. The guests who sit downstairs sit on bleachers. Additionally, there are members walking around with signs to explain the derby game to those who have never been to an event. All around amazing experience.

We arrived late...apparently before the first match starts the MCs explain the rules-note: will have to be on time for next "match" (is that what they're're called?) - no "bouts." That's it. These gals take the sport seriously while at the same time showing great respect for members of the other teams. One big happy family! Player names like "Bloody Mary" (she rocked BTW!), "Lucille Brawl," and "Babe Ruthless" only add to the whimsical, yet ass-kicking, environment. Everybody there, from other spectators to team players, were so friendly. While we were sitting there, one of the players from a team in Bout 1 even came up, introduced herself, asked if we were having fun, and thanked us for coming! The teams also invited the crowd to attend the after party with them (Jackolope's on 6th)...which we did for a bit. If you've never been before at least go once to check it out. Apparently, Texas Rollergirls was the #2 league in the U.S. for 2013. Good times! p.s. THANKS to @YelpAustin team we had comp tix to sit in VIP section! Thank you, thank you! Awesome! There were waitstaff in that area who took drink orders during the event. Didn't even have to wait in line for a beer! BONUS!

We stumbled into our normal north Austin restaurant for happy hour yesterday around 6pm.  Caboose…read morewas going to be performing at 8:15, and they were doing a sound check.  The drummer was pounding the drum over and over again.  The bass guitar was also playing notes for the sake of noise and the keyboard would randomly check in.  Most people go to Happy Hour to chat with friends after a long week.  With this "sound check" going on and on it was simply impossible to speak.   We've been here many, many times, and all the Friday evening bands have to check levels, but it's never gone on like this. We spoke to our waitress who said it had been going on since 2:30 and the wait staff appeared to be annoyed.  She spoke to someone who said he could turn off the sound and we'd just hear vocals.  Which was true, for about 5 mins.  Then they sang a number to check their levels (it's now about 7pm).  They finally sat down for a break before they're officially started.  We were able to could continue with conversation asking to for our tickets around 8pm. We heard the first song, which was obviously well rehearsed, however you couldn't hear the vocalist over the bass guitar.  It seems if they are going to interrupt a happy hour for several hours to check levels, the levels should be spot on when it begins.   Again, I stress, this band has a perfectly wonderful sound.  Obviously well rehearsed and work together.  However, they're never ending sound check needs to be taken into consideration to business owners realizing that patrons will have to experience a cacophonous happy hour while the band sets levels which seems to lead to a bass guitar solo while the gifted vocalist's lyrics can't be heard.     I don't think the blame falls Completely on the group though (hence three stars instead of 1), the restaurant manager should have been more proactive in getting them under control.
