If you're looking for a trendy, but rustic Motel feel this is the place to go. Amenities were kept clean, but you should not expect it to be completely renovated. It's fun to go on a trip and they have a pool that opens early with a bar. Highly recommend to get some breakfast tacos at Joanne's and sit poolside. read more

Very disappointing and way overpriced. Shame on us for not paying attention to the room rate when we booked a room. Over $400/night for a run down motel. The location is very convenient, so maybe that's why people are willing to pay a very high premium. The room product was sub par--uncomfortable bed, loud air conditioning unit that kept us up all night, outdated TV that barely worked, and dirty floors. You can stay at pretty much any luxury property around Austin for less than this place. Definitely don't recommend. read more

Babes, you are not here for a FourSeasons experience... you are here for a rockin good time that you will carry in your little memory box to the GRAVE! Absolutely iconic Motel, with perfectly adequate rooms, comfy beds and all the basic amenities. The pool is a great place to rock your retro suit and shades, and snap some memorable moments for your instagram. Rocky's Bar serves it up stiff and is a fun place for mingling. Joann's Diner was a welcome reprieve from the somewhat more pretentious dining establishments on the block. Housekeeping was lovely, having not expected them so early I didn't put anything away but when I came back from breakfast all of my precious things were organized neatly beside my freshly made bed. I appreciate the integrity. If I could offer insight on just one improvement, it might be time to re-plumb. The sinks were slow to drain and the toilet took a long hold to fully flush. Nothing that killed the vibes enough to deduct points. ;) read more

The cost for such a small room (w/ limited amenities, old fixtures, and a wildly loud AC that somehow didn't manage to cool down the incredibly small space) was higher than I would chose to do again. This is for the pool area. There's an event going on. It's worth it. Today was a pride event and they really did such a good job of putting on a good show. If you come for an event anticipates typical bar pricing. But you're at a damn pool party so it kind of makes it worth it. They have a couple of bars so you don't have to wait too long of a line. If you come for a drag show, anticipate the queens getting in the water with you. Which was a ton of fun. It does get a little rowdy. But when the weather gets warm in Austin, that's what we do. On a normal day of the week it's a much more lazy vibe. I definitely think it's worth checking out for just a lazy day by the pool. You can grab a pass for 25. Parking is not that bad around here, but just really look at signs. Tons of paid parking, but it's possible to get free if you look around. read more

This has been a motel for 90 years on South Congress. I love the rooms, they're eclectic big low-style with a mix of old and update. The old and new are so well blended to give a funky and homey feel. Beds are super comfy. Had the best nights of rest there. Staff is so nice, helpful, friendly, and just super fun to be around. I love the little bodega with motel merch, provisions, etc. Fully stocked mini fridge in the rooms with baskets of great snacks (though we didn't partake in either). You can buy 3-hour day passes online (Mon-Thurs is $25, Fri-Sun is $45). You can also swim in the evenings from 5-10pm at a discount, because let's be honest, it's hot at all hours of the day in Austin (Mon-Thurs nights $20, Fri-Sun nights $25). The Austin Motel pool also does "Full Moon Swims" from 5-10pm every full moon day, which is essentially just an excuse for me to go to the pool. Full moon tickets are $20 and discounted drinks are available at the pool bar. -Pool seating is plentiful, there were ~32 ish lounge chairs and 2 tables with 5 chairs each when I went. -Parking: Expect to pay for parking in the nearby surface lots or parking garages around Congress, OR you might get lucky and find free street parking in the neighborhoods! I think it was just ok. The best part is the location: right in the middle of Congress St with all its restaurants and bars and shops. We still Uber'd to restaurants downtown and on Lamar, though -- so it's not walkable to there. Yea, the vibe is pretty cool -- with its retro feel and neon lights and cute pool. However, otherwise it just feels a bit outdated. We didn't have the cool wallpaper in our room you see in all their photos. We actually didn't even have a phone in our room, so at first were at a loss how to call the front desk. (What if your cell phone dies?) For $300/night, I was honestly hoping to maybe at least get some cute room photos. Not the case. Just felt a bit drab. We also had to lug our big suitcases in the heat up quite a few stairs to get to our room. Same on the way out. Again, whatever -- I'm healthy, so 1st world problems. But for $300/night... A time-warp and time capsule, in relation to Old Austin. I always wanted to stay here and in town for a company meeting, at long last I got my wish. Prima donnas or snobs, or those wanting the latest and greatest in hotel living should steal clear of this Austin landmark. But know that it's clean, tidy, safe and stylish. Many customers rave about the poolside cabana and both the cabana and poolside seem to be situated along the descent of a hill! The gift shop is excellent, as are the handful of friendly people working the front office throughout my stay and they're great conversationalists. The initial price appears OK, it states there are is only one additional charge for a Resort Fee at 1.39 per reservation. However there is no mention of a $45 per night parking fee by valet only. It is nearly impossible to call the front desk from home, it just rings and rings, and when they did answer after about 24 hours of trying, "the system " was down. read more

We had a mom/daughter getaway last night and loved our stay. The king room was full of nostalgia for a child of the 70s. Loved the color scheme and all of the details you added to make it feel comfy such as snacks and drinks. The staff is friendly and helpful. Even played along to let us feel like tourists. I was hesitant to write a review of this hotel because the staff was very friendly and helped me reschedule a missed reservation that they didn't have to do. I saw this written up many years ago in and have always wanted to stay at a fixed up retro motor court hotel so I thought this would be the way to get the experience I wanted without staying in a dump. It's not a dump... but it's not great either. Rooms are small, finish out is very basic and not in great shape, the doors need weatherstripping badly, and I'd be okay won't this if they were charging luxury hotel room rates for this place. The Embassy Suites a half mile down the road is half the price of this. In retrospect I wished we walked around, taken in the charm of this place and wished we had stayed here instead of actually staying here. read more

Very cute and renovated (kind of) retro motel from the 1930's. Bed was comfortable, pool was nice, there was A/C and the room was clean. Here's what I didn't like: upon checking in we're told there won't be room service bc of COVID.. which isn't an acceptable policy anymore IMO, there is zero shelving in the bathroom so it's impossible to do hair/make-up in the tiny bathroom. We were able to ask for fresh towels, but bc there's no room service our damp towels piled up on the floor. I believe hotel's should lower their nightly rate if there's no room service. I've stayed at the Austin Motel 4 times, the latest visit being two days in the middle of the week last week. I love this place for so many reasons! 1. The location is perfect. Walking distance to downtown, lady bird lake with kayaking/canoeing/etc, and right on South Congress amidst a bunch of cool shops, bars, restaurants and food trucks. Though they have a decent parking lot, you really don't need a car unless you plan to go much further around the area, but why would you need to? Tacos, ice cream, cupcakes, Italian, sushi, coffee, fresh juice, BBQ - everything is right here, plus the Continental Club for local music. Really, the location here is primo. 2. The pool. OMG the pool. Every time I have been here I have been amazed at how few people actually take advantage of it. It is crystal clear, pool towels and tubes for floating are provided at no charge, there is ample seating, shady areas (if you don't want to be in the direct sun) all around the pool so that at all hours of the day you can find some; there's a bar with ice cold water for free and sodas and beers for $$; and the pool is big enough to actually swim laps! And they are always playing super cool music. I just love the vibe, so peaceful and relaxing, and really feel that the room prices are worth it just for access to the pool. 3. The rooms are totally cute. Each stay has been in a different room. I've stayed by the pool, in the middle level, and in two different rooms at the top part of the hotel. My most recent stay was in room 201, and that room was perfect for one or two people. Amenities include free super-fast wifi, ample towels,cute handmade soap, free-trade coconut shampoo/conditioner/body wash in the bathroom, and there's a recycle bin in the room too! Plus the bed is comfy, the A/C very efficient, and there's even a flat screen TV, if you plan to spend any time in your room. 4. The price for what you get is, to me, the best value in Austin: your awesome room, access to the pool, free parking if you have a car, and all in a great location. It cannot be beat. 5. Finally, the people. All very nice, full of info about Austin with suggestions on places to visit and eat; very efficient service, and if you need to drop bags before it's time to check in (check in time is 3 pm) so you can browse the shops or grab a bite, that's super easy to do. I love chatting with the front desk staff! Couple things to note: there is a bodega/shop where you check in, so if you forgot something, or want to buy something to remember the hotel or your stay, there are cute souvenirs, plus toothbrushes and toiletries. They also have a fridge with food and drinks....HOWEVER, these are VERY PRICEY compared to everything on the street. I had forgotten to get a bottle of water my first night there and did not want to walk down the street alone, late, in the dark, so I bought a bottle from the bodega for...gasp....totally embarrassed to admit this....$6.50. For water. A single bottle. It was a large bottle, but still, I saw the same exact one the next day at the nearby corner gas station for $1.99. Oh well, live and learn. Also, this place is ALWAYS FULL TO CAPACITY, I have never stayed there when there has been a vacancy. So, if you want to stay here, book in advance if you can, and don't hem and haw about the price. Overpriced and overhyped! Staff know nothing about hospitality. Their who gives a crap attitude gets old real fast. Outdoor area filled with light blue stained couches and chairs, ew! Place needs to be updated, rooms are atrocious -bathroom is bare minimum formica and poor lighting, literally a florescent bulb across the mirror, floors in room are filthy dirty sticky Spanish tiles that haven't been cleaned in years. Wasn't willing to take my shoes off indoors. At night the walk from the lot to the main area is thru an outdoor stairwell with no lighting, No one working there cared about the lack of lights at night! When my colleague suggested that I stay at the Austin Motel during a recent visit to Austin, I had to have her repeat her suggestion... "Hotel or motel," I asked? She repeated "motel with an 'm'" and I took a deep breath as I went to look up the reviews. It turns out that the Austin Motel is indeed a Motel, but it's a nice one, it's got a ton of charm and history, and it's centrally located on S. Congress, walking distance to many Austin hot spots. The price is right and the staff is friendly. All of that being said, it is a motel. You enter your room from the parking lot, and your room will have the basics... fancy amenities not included! My room was clean, my bed was comfortable, the wifi worked and so did the TV, so I did get what I paid for. The way to enjoy this well located, iconic local Austin motel is to buy a day pass to the pool. They have changing rooms, fun pool with bar, music and novelty floats! Spend the day at the pool, go eat dinner early, then enjoy pool into the evening. Joanne's Fine Foods is attached to hotel and has the best tortillas! Do not stay here. The rooms are truly terrible. The door to our room faced the parking lot, and didn't even close properly. There were gaps on all 4 sides. The bathroom was tiny and dingy. There was no counter space at all. I did my research, I knew you could only reserve the room so far in advance... so the day my dates were open, I was on the phone making those reservations as I wanted specific rooms. I got the one on the end that overlooks the cool pool. I also reserved one of the larger rooms for a group of friends that were coming in town a few days later. The Austin Motel is pretty amazing. I didn't know what to expect. Motel? Aren't those usually a little seedy? Not this one. This is super hip, comfy, clean and the best part - adjacent to everything fun on South Congress! No electronic key cards here, you're given a real key to lock and unlock your room. Hello nostalgia. From check-in to check-out the staff was nothing short of amazing and did their best to give you any recommendations or make your stay as comfortable as possible. I did love that their lobby was open at all hours of the day, so you had plenty of options for snacks, beer, wine, or any other amenity you may have forgotten during your travels. They even have a bunch swim suits, clothes, books and fun souvenirs if you wanted to take something home to remember your stay. Wifi was free and strong enough to let me stream episodes of The Office, and there were some communal areas inside your room that made working easy. I didn't watch TV, but they had a nice sized one with a ton of channels if you wanted some background noise. I hear every room is a little different, and mine looked like it came out of a retro 70's catalogue. One of the only issues I had was the noise late at night from cars wanting to rev their engines and show how fancy they were. It wasn't a huge deal, but around 130AM, it was definitely noticeable. If you're one of those people that are easily awoken, then you might want to find another area, cause this part of town is bustling at all hours of the day. It wasn't the motel's fault, they're just in a noisy spot! Huge plus, it's next door to Jo's Coffee and ton of other great eateries in the area. For late night-ish eats, Home Slice is a three minute walk. I'll for sure stay here again and I'll be recommending it to friends as well! read more

I stayed here three nights. The motel is in an excellent location, within walking distance to most everything and there's also bicycle rentals and scooters right out front that will take you downtown and to the bat bridge in less then ten minutes. The room I had was small with a queen bed that had to be the absolute worst bed I've ever slept in. It was about 3 inches from the floor and had no boxspring. It actually had sunken holes in it where it felt like people sat for months. Totally sucked. There's hardly any place to store your clothes or anything else for that matter in the room except for one shelf. No place to store anything in the bathroom either. Wooden floor, tiled bathroom and full sized bed. Window a/c worked great. Hot water in the shower. Free parking and free wifi too. The only thing that's really good about this motel is it's location and the fact that it has a nice pool that actually has a deep end that's 7 foot deep. This is my third time staying here and will be my last. It's totally not worth the money for what you get. There's other choices close by and now with Airbnb's all over they might be a better choice. read more

This is no Marriott but it is a cute motel! It's right on Congress so there's tons of restaurants and shops around. The rooms are a decent size. Each one of the regular rooms has a king size bed, flat screen tv, table, & 2 chairs. I did like that there are 3 types of locks on the door. It made me feel like it was a little more secure with an outside facing door. The bathrooms are a little small here. There's enough room for two people to stand at the mirror with a little space, however if you are a large person, using the toilet will be a struggle. For me being pregnant it was a tight squeeze trying to shut the bathroom door while standing in front of the toilet. You almost have to stand over the toilet just to get the door shut. There's also no curtains on the bathroom window so anyone walking by can see you do your business. Also, ladies there is no hair dryer so either air dry or bring your own! Being pregnant I'm pretty uncomfortable in most place but I have to say the beds here were pretty awesome. So incredibly comfortable and soft. I loved that they didn't have a heavy comforter. Just a sheet and a thin blanket. The A/C unit is loud but gets reeeeally cold at night if you like the cold. You barely even notice its 99 degrees out with that little AC unit going in your room. The guy working the front desk (Zach) was incredibly nice and helpful at check in and check out. If you have time to hangout they have a pool with a bar located near the front. It actually looks out on to congress. Checkout is at noon but they allow you to have a late checkout of 1pm at no additional charge if you ask nicely! For $189/ night I would definitely stay here again if in the area! read more

Austin Motel Five star rating for the pool alone, as I am a native. I love pool hopping around Austin with my friends and this is definitely one of our favorite pools to hang out at. Located on SoCo, it has everything I need in walking distance. You will always have a good time here, especially if you go to the events they throw like the Full Moon Swim, Splash Dances and Float Fridays. Setting can be limited so just grab a drink at the bar and hop in the pool! Passes are $20 a person with a reduced price of $10 on Sunday and drink + food specials during their Endless Sundays (happy hour) from 3-6pm. read more

Review for the POOL, not the hotel: The pool used to be cute but this time the service had definitely lost its charm. We came twice in Summer 2020, when they did a great job of physically-distancing and keeping the pool fun. The bar was well run, food was good, and service was wonderful. It was also more money per person for the pool reservation. This was our first visit in 2021 and it wasn't nearly as good. One bartender kept serving whatever #basic, maskless dummy walked up to the side of the bar, instead of the line of people waiting to be served and still physically-distancing. Once we got to the bar, the menu had fewer drink options, no food was available, and the bartenders weren't working together and neither was very pleasant (they were super cool last summer (during the pandemic!)) We got the drinks and they're fine but not great, and def not worth the wait. Additionally, the host was intermittently not watching the gate so sometimes people couldn't get in, a big umbrella blew into the pool because she wasn't there, and then a waiter seemed to be giving free drinks to some friends around the pool. Of all the staff, only one bartender seemed like he was working hard, but none of the rest of staff cared about the customers. read more

Like 3 lightbulbs in the whole "king suite". Loud 20 year old HVAC. Grounds are in rough shape. Two stars because the staff was friendly (while not really offering any discounts or refunds after complaints) and the neighborhood is cool. But. Yeah. At this price, you can get a much better spot. I relocated after one uncomfortable night. I hope that they improve! It has serious potential to be a groovy retro spot. Until then - get ye somewhere else in the fine town of Austin. read more

We were able to park right outside our room which was extremely convenient. Swimming pool a big addition and very attractive. They provide large pool towels. It may not be fancy or have new furnishings, but it has a ton of character and is in a great location on South Congress -- waking distance to so many wonderful shops, restaurants, and bars. It's a motel, so of course you have your door facing outside to the world, but it's all very safe and cozy. I love being handed a real key instead of a swipey card. My room was beautiful. Tall ceilings and two ceiling fans, sort of Spanish tile flooring and a giant wooden armoire, cozy chairs, a little table, microwave and mini fridge, huge king sized bed, and a bathroom that could use some updates but works just fine and is very clean. The atmosphere of Austin Motel is really warm and welcoming, as is the customer service. There's lots of flowers and greenery, a bunch of random garden art, vintage chairs with floral cushions and huge old umbrellas by the pool -- which is very blue and inviting. Seriously wish I had brought my swimsuit. There's even a local cat who hangs out here, which was the very best part. He was so sweet, just walking and flopping around the property. This spot is definitely a place I had fun in. However, I think I was too old or not in the right mood for this sort of place. It would have been a fine place to just crash in while enjoying the local bar scene. Staying a few nights looking for quiet or romance - not so much. The host was really nice. The sleeping cat on the counter was a wonderful welcome. I only wish we could have taken a cat with us. The hotel is super cool. Almost kitchy, but not in a bad way. Our room had ginormous tiles on the floor, a fresco on a wall, and some old/funky/vintage furniture. Really enjoyed the look of the room. The parking is NOT made for a large pick up truck. It is one way in and you have to u-turn to get out. Seeing that future dilemna, I always backed in to a parking spot before it started to get crowded. If it were full, I'd never get my truck out without a spotter. The thing I did not like was the absolute lack of any thoughts of peace & quiet. We got a room on the first floor. Leave if they try to put you in one of those. Every step was as if they were in our room. The folks next door obviously went to the local bars every night and would hang out smoking in front of their doors. It seemed like we were in the conversation. There is NO sound proofing between walls or outside the door. It was very annoying with the late night crowd around us. Like I said, if that were our goal we would have fit in better. The bathroom was nice, but very tiny. When sitting on the throne, I had one knee on the door and one knee on the bathtub. I'm 6' 4". Felt like I was doing my business in airline seating. It was a good spot and a good price for the prime location. I didn't mind trying it once, but would likely try something different next time. read more
