Chapa scared me into a completely unnecessary procedure and after quoting me a price of $1600 to perform osseous surgery on a single tooth, they tried to charge me $3300 at the finish line. The care I received was downright cruel and his assistant, Montijo, completely destroyed my obturator (oral prosthesis) when she recklessly sterilized it. read more

Lo que me pasó. I talked to Dr. Chapa on Saturday and on Sunday. I told him that I was on pain and that I was feeling pangs...pricking. He mentioned for me to continue taking the Tylenol. . On Sunday when I called him back and told him that I was feeling a pricking, his answer was that If I had an infection, then for me to wait to the next day on Monday to have it drained. On Monday I went to have it Drained again and I told him that I wanted to be seen soon. He mentioned for me to see him when it hurts. I told him that I was not an expert, that I didn't know how my body was going to react and there for I wanted for him to see him if I was on pain again. I went to work on Wednesday but On Tuesday I was on pain. I went to work on Wednesday and I went to the dentist. I called because I was on pain. Again, I got another infection it was the third one. The front desk mentioned that My insurance didn't have enough money. I was on pain. I think that they also said that I needed to pay out of pocket. I told them that I did called Monday and Tuesday. read more

From the very first meeting with his team regarding gum surgery to the one on one meeting with Cleo about the medications and prep for the surgery week and day I have felt taken care of. I am appending my several updates from initially great first visit to subsequent decent visits to insurance follow-up credit conversation frustrations. Upon hearing of my negative hiccups from visiting this practice, Dr. Chapa reached out to me and left me a voicemail to ask me to call him back at the office or on his personal cell. I returned his call and we had a civilized, polite discussion that stemmed from the small hiccups turning into the little things that added and gave me that negative perception. I will preface this by saying that in no way was I angry with Dr Chapa or dissatisfied with him during the surgery or any work performed on my implant. The work and quality that he performed was great and I truly appreciate the professional and courteous manner he has from every single visit that I've had with him. The frustration was solely from not having anyone from the medical insurance department give me great follow up which can be understandable when people that I previously last talked to for a follow up are not in office and thus getting the "I'm sorry, we don't have any idea what you're talking about, please re-explain your entire situation" can be a bit frustrating. That and the few times that I politely asked to be followed up on my credit for refunds every time I called, felt like I was being very bothersome and pestering them when they had better things to do than follow up on my wanting an update. If there is anything unsatisfactory, I would hope one could reach out to Dr. Chapa to discuss as he has the business practice of hearing open feedback and should anyone have any frustrations, be heard and ensure they are made aware of why they may feel that way. Our conversation together helped me move past the dissatisfaction I had as I received a check for several follow up items that were previously not clearly discussed by all parties but Dr. Chapa has made things right. After all, when dealing with anything medical or dental payment related, these costs paid do add up and to understand how working with insurance and the money being applied to debts could be broken down for better transparency when dealing with hefty price tag on dental procedures. That way I wouldn't feel as swindled if someone were to ask me for the hefty payment of what my insurance didn't cover. Some people are OK with being left out on the dark for these sorts of things. However, as a well informed customer who does ask tons of questions regarding the bill, I do want to emphasize their process sounds like it will improve over time as they gain experience. Local Austin business and dentist practitioners are still here and honest! Thank you very much for the great follow up and listening to this customer. Overall: Additional outsource of services for ImagDental that was missed and included my extra $89 fee was because my first set of results came back with something a miss and Dr. Chapa wanted to have follow up details to ensure everything was OK. Unfortunately no one at either practice explained these extra services and ImagDent called me saying I "just needed to pay more because Dr. Chapa forgot to check a box". Communication there was mismanaged but was fully explained at the end when I spoke with Dr. Chapa. Pieces turned over to my dentist from Dr. Chapa for installation of my implant were also covered by my dentist and thus the communication "to be had with Dr. Chapa of a refund on parts turned over" was not had of who would supply the additional pieces needed for the impressions to make my tooth. If all was communicated to all parties, I'm sure this would not have been as big of an ordeal that I thought it was made out to be. read more

My 9 year old daughter needed to have a gum graft, not a normal procedure for a child. The periodontist her dentist recommended was out of network, so we came to yelp to look for another that was in network and found Austin Perio Health. We went in for a consultation and felt comfortable with the doctor and all the staff, all were very friendly and full of information. We went ahead and planned the surgery, the staff gave us all the details we needed about the medications, the procedure itself, and then the recovery time. I sat in during the procedure and was thoroughly impressed at how great Dr Spencer and the nurse, Cleo, were with a nervous little girl. She wore an eye mask and listened to her music the whole time - she told me the shots hurt, but that was it. We even got a call that evening from Dr Spencer checking up on her. If you're in need of a periodontist, this is the place. read more

I really loved this business back before Dr. Spencer retired. Ever since then however it has gone downhill. I've be going here for 10 years. First my favorite hygienist disappeared at one on my appointments and was replaced with a grouchy,bossy woman giving way too much advice, suggestions etc. Well today I was 10 minutes late to my appointment and I have never been late in 10 years, sometimes I'm early. I've had to wait in the waiting arer 5, 10, even 20 minutes several times, but I've never complained. Professionals think they're time is always more important than mine, sorry I digress. Anyway, they canceled my cleaning appointment after I drove from Elgin to Steck & MoPac and was 10 minutes late. Sorry I couldn't fly over the accident and traffic jam on 290. Not very flexible or considerate. Peggy, my hygienist is bossy, opninated and gives dental advice that she shouldn't. Won't be going back, lost a loyal customer. read more

The service here is great--Dr. Chapa was thorough when it came to my initial visit. He didn't do my cleaning, but had one of his hygienists take care of it. I think it was pretty thorough and didn't experience any pain. I'd give four/five stars for this though would rate things differently when dealing with the office's administration (with the exception of Jamie, she was polite and quick in answering any questions I had). When it came to questions on billing, I had my issue escalated by an administrative assistant (Liz--not as helpful as Jamie and rude) to Kaleigh Chapa, Dr. Chapa's wife, who is the office manager of Austin Perio Health. She wasn't available to speak until later in the week as she is only on-site 1-2 days out of the week. My question regarded why it was necessary to have a follow-up visit after my cleaning, especially since my gums weren't bleeding and I would need to take time out of work to visit and also pay them an additional amount of $. Her response was terse and said that it was just their policies and procedures (P&P) and if I didn't like it, I could go somewhere else. If her intention was to be hostile, I didn't find it that way. I found the whole exchange humorous as I wasn't sure why she got so defensive. This is a great example of nepotism at its best. When I asked to get more details from the assistant on future services, she told me that wasn't needed and that it could be discussed after the follow-up visit was scheduled. I had been their patient for more than ten years. To make it short, i was going to lose ALL of my teeth from periodontal disease and terrible dental management from my previous dentists around town that left me cashless and with no hope. Then, I found Dr Spencer and his dental hygienist, Peggy, who took care of my mouth with care and determination, and now I say that I haven't lost even one tooth. This review is for the front desk only, I have yet to schedule treatment and am unsure if I will. Liz from the front desk has called repeatedly to schedule treatment. I haven't had the opportunity to call back due to a busy travel schedule for both work and personal. Since I haven't called back I have received two calls per week to remind me about my treatment options and to schedule treatment. I'm unused to this "attention" and am used to calling back at my convenience instead of being called multiple times in a short period of time. I'll leave a follow up review if I return for treatment. The only reason I would not return for treatment is because of the reasons for this poor review - the doctors all were nice and professional and explained the procedures in detail during the consultation. read more

I visited Dr. Chapa at Austin Periodontists recently for a cleaning, x-Rays, and to have a dental appliance made. I found the office staff to be friendly and helpful, more so than the average dental office. Dr. Chapa put me right at ease and was very personable, knowledgeable, and professional. He did a super job of explaining the issues I have with tori in my mouth and what my options were. He took an impression for the appliance, and at a later visit, took great care and time to make sure it was perfectly fitted. Because of my tori issues, the procedure was lengthy, but Dr. Chapa's assistant was one of the best I've had experience with. Her manner with me was very calming. The appliance fits me perfectly, which has never been the case with other dentists, and I am very pleased with the whole experience. Everyone in the office is so friendly! They really seem to care about patients, and go out of their way to be helpful. I got to my appointment a few minutes late and frustrated due to Austin traffic. Not only were they not upset with me, they even made a note in my chart to not schedule me at rush hour in the future. My wife and I have appointments at Austin Perio Health every three months. Very professional, quick, easy, painless. The friendly and efficient staff makes our visits something we look forward to. We also take care of our mouth health between visits. We have had no cavities and excellent gum health for years with regular maintenance and professional cleanings by Austin Perio Health. And because we have our mouths seen to on a regular basis we haven't had to incur the additional costs and pain that can result from too much time between cleanings. Do you change your auto's oil on a regular basis or do you wait until your engine begins making noise or, even worse, seizes up? Same thing - preventive maintenance is paramount. If you don't want to pay for it later (it can be very costly and very painful to wait too long between cleanings) - go in regularly and get your mouth seen to. It's a much better option than going in after a problem arises. read more
