Everything was clean and organized, which made it easy to just relax and focus on learning. The instructor was fantastic--super patient, knowledgeable, and encouraging. I came in with zero experience, but they explained everything step-by-step and made the whole process feel approachable. Even when my piece started off a little rough, they helped me turn it into something I was actually proud of. Using the pottery wheel was definitely the highlight. It's a bit challenging at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's incredibly fun and even a little therapeutic. The class was paced perfectly, so I never felt rushed and had plenty of time to practice. The atmosphere was another big plus. Everyone was friendly, and it felt more like a relaxed, creative hangout than a formal class. It made the whole experience even more enjoyable. I came for a couple's pottery class with Bella. The lesson started with a crash course on wheel throwing basics, and Bella walked us through step by step on how to create a bowl from scratch. When it was our turn to get our hands dirty, Bella was able to strike a nice balance between giving us proper direction when we needed it and giving us space to experiment and bring our visions to life. We each got to create 3 pieces during the hour and a half lesson. We came back for glazing 3 weeks later, and that session took about an hour. Our pieces were ready about 4 weeks after that. We were both really happy with how our pieces turned out! One tip I have is to embrace the mess and the chaos. You never really know how a piece will turn out when it comes out of the kiln. Also make sure you wear something that you're comfortable getting a bit messy in. Even though we wore aprons, we still got a few clay stains on our clothes, but they were easy to wash out. They have limited parking in front of the studio, but I was able to find a spot both times. I would definitely recommend Feats of Clay's one-time lessons to anyone looking for a fun hands-on experience. read more

Take a Hand Sculpting class! I absolutely had a great time We were given the choice to create whatever "Aquatic Creature" and given free rein to sculpt within our allotted time (2 hours). The class was full so be sure to schedule in advance. While the owner/artist is a talented artist, her customer service is abysmal. Was looking forward to attending a Feature study workshop and reserved in advance, even though it was quite expensive for me ($125). I developed severe abdominal pain that day and was not able to attend a workshop because I was literally in the ER, and she would not give me a credit for a future workshop. Beware signing up for any workshop, if you are not able to attend you will lose your money. Sad to say I will not be returning. read more

Y'all... I've found my happy place! I'm so grateful to this little studio and all the rad humans who either work and/or clay play there. I've learned so much in a little over a year, and plan to stick with it (and them) as long as they will have me! The instructors are so supportive of the learning process, and the classes and my membership is affordable. Pottery is somewhat risky, as most creative outlets can be, but this team does everything they can to care for the work and the humans first and foremost. Extremely disappointed with this place. We've bought numerous items from them over the years and my wife was very excited to take a ceramics class with them. Unfortunately, she ended up in the ER on the day of the class and couldn't attend. We emailed them hours before the start of the class to notify them and to check about switching it to another class in the future. We also offered to submit proof of the ER visit. They didn't get back to us until 3 days after stating that they couldn't give her a credit and would still be charging her card. The lack of empathy is completely unacceptable. We will not be going back to this place and encourage everyone to find ceramics elsewhere. read more

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! Me and my wife went to the pottery class and also paid to come back to paint our pieces. When we finished, days later one of the employees was fired and he destroyed all of our pieces. The owner said we could come back and create new ones. When we went back we were rushed through it and were not given much pottery to work with. Then they asked for us to pay again to paint our new pieces. Which I disagreed with since we had already paid for this but never got to paint our original ones. They would not drop it after arguing back and forth. Very disappointed with how unprofessional they were. DO NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE. read more

I don't normally post negative reviews but my experience at Feats of Clay was so terrible that I felt it was necessary. I had some free time to try a new hobby before I start a new job so I thought I'd try pottery. I knew it would be challenging but I was excited for it. I signed up for the basics class with Bella. Some of the others who were in the class had more pottery experience and it was frustrating that Bella spent the first three sessions teaching more advanced pottery lessons instead of teaching the Basics (as the class was supposed to be). I was frustrated and expressed that so Bella eventually did start going back to some more basic lessons but her attitude was unkind and she did not create a comfortable environment. She was annoyed at me asking questions, would rather work on her own pottery pieces and made it awkward if I asked my neighbor a question even though he was happy to help. The environment was not fun and made me dread Thursday mornings with Bella. The last session of class is a glazing lesson and I was so excited to glaze the few cups I managed to make. Bella forgot to fire up my cups so I stood there on the last day with nothing to glaze. Bella was apathetic and unapologetic. She just said "well... pottery be like that sometimes and it's a mess!" Instead of taking any ownership or apologizing for the inconvenience and her mistake, she showed no care and was very unprofessional. The others in the class looked at me and whispered "I'm so sorry" as they knew how terrible she was being towards me. This class was a waste of my time and I feel so disappointed by the experience. Overall the pottery in the front of the store that they sell is beautiful and the studio location is great but I strongly don't recommend taking a class with Bella. Hopefully the other instructors are more professional, instructive and kind but that was not the case with Bella. read more

I love this very Austin feeling studio. The studio is filled with unique, beautiful works of art. The private lessons are a great value. The teachers tailor the lesson to your skill level and I've been an open studio member for a few months now and the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Marc Jeannine is a great teacher I highly recommend taking private classes with him or the owner, Judy. Classes are expensive but Judy is in her late 70s and has run this studio for over 40 years so I definitely didn't mind supporting local. Also, I have learned a lot since I started and have only taken about 5 classes. You can rent studio hours for 20$/hr and the gallery up front showcases teacher work on an consignment basis. I would never recommend taking a wheel throwing class here. I was informed classes were great for beginners and that's not the case. The classes are completely unstructured and the teachers don't really care to help and tend to work on their own pieces during class. I found myself dreading class and was so happy when I didn't have to go anymore. I already joined another studio's pottery class and have learned more in one class than I did in the whole 6-week class at Feats of Clay. read more

I was looking all over Austin for ceramics lessons and I'm very happy I ended up at Feats of Clay. My teacher Marc's passion was infectious, and he was a wealth of technical knowledge whenever I had a question (which was often). I would recommend Feats for anyone who wants to dive right into the clay and be given the space and support to squeeze and create and spin and experiment. I Love this place and everything about it. It's a smedium space but it and the people who instruct and take classes enjoy ceramics and are friendly, open to sharing their expertise, mistakes, techniques, a good laugh...you get it. I've learned so much since I started a year ago. I've gone from making ashtrays (not on purpose) to small toilets and now I make usable bowls. I've taken 2 sculpting classes with "Becca" and I now fancy myself a Sculptor actually selling several pieces (who knew)! My husband says I'm much nicer when I come home from classes or anytime I spend at Feats of Clay. I think it's not just my new found love of clay but the atmosphere at Feats of Clay. If you don't mind getting a little messy...ok maybe a lot messy. You don't take yourself to serious and are open to learning and trying something new from/with people who LOVE pottery you have to take a class or stop by and buy something from the studio shop. read more

Attended a class with some friends and at the end selected the option to pay for each of our pieces to be glazed for about $20. We were told by the woman at check out that we would receive a telephone call or email when the pieces were ready to be picked up. After over two months of waiting and not hearing back, I gave the store a call. I was then told that there was a status update page on the website that you were supposed to go to to check on your pottery. That's great! If only we were told that when checking out instead of being told we'd get a call. On the phone call, the woman said she would check in the back for our pieces and give me a call back that day. To this day I still have not gotten that call. I looked online and sure enough, our pieces had been dumped because they had not been picked up on time. I gave another call for ask for a refund. Not for the class but just for the $20 that was spent on getting the pieces glazed. Instead of taking ownership for the fact that we were explicitly told we would get a phone call or email for pick up, I was chastised for not knowing about this online portal my friends and I were never told about. In addition to that, no ownership or responsibility was taken to simply say, "Hey, I'm sorry you were told the wrong information". It's not even about the $20 anymore but just poor business practice in general. I was once again told I would get a call back but nothing. My friends and I even considered taking the several week long course after our class but we will take our business elsewhere. read more

I went to Feats of Clay for the first and last time recently. I found several things I wanted including something on the half off table outside and confirmed with an employee that a particular item was indeed half price. As I was about to pay for my items, another employee (the owner perhaps) hung up from the phone call she'd been on and interjected that she couldn't possibly sell the item for that amount. I nicely commented that it was on the table outside and the half off amount was affordable and she snatched the item away and exclaimed, "Well, $40 is affordable!" Perhaps to some people it is and perhaps for some purposes it is, but not to me and not for the purpose I had for the item. I found the woman's response to be rude at best. I won't shop there next time I'm in Austin. read more

I went here with some friends and girlfriend to do a cute little double date. You have to have prior experience/training to use the wheel, and if you say you do, they will ask you questions and watch you like the Gestapo in Nazi Germany. You have to clean up after your done, and they're not shy about that either; they continually reminded us the entire time. It's a private studio (I didn't know that going into it) so I understand the whole "you're on your own, we're not gonna help you" thing, but at the same time the whole ordeal costs us over $100 for only one hour and they wouldn't even put any of our pottery in the oven, so we left with nothing. The only reason I'm giving this two stars rather than one is because I misunderstood the kind of place this is. If you are an experienced potter that is willing to pay a decent amount of money to rent out some equipment, this might be the place for you. However, if you wanna have a good time doing some casual pottery, you'd probably have better luck somewhere else. read more

I have a thing for functional art. I mean, you can't just lounge around my house... you have to earn your keep! Still working on that concept with the cat... ...anyway. Feats of Clay has great functional pieces! I kinda went hog wild the first time I walked in here. It's so CHEAP [for pottery]. I bought salt and pepper shakers, mugs, bowls, vases... and I didn't break $100! Crazy. Granted, a lot of the pieces are done by amateurs - probably people who take classes there, but they're still well done. Simple, functional, and well-crafted. And you can still definitely find professional pieces (look for Judy's shelf). I like it much more than the ornately carved, sparkled-glazed, overpriced pieces at Clayways - although you can tell Clayways' pieces are all done by more experienced potters. If you're looking for functional, local art from friendly, knowledgeable people, this is your place! Classes are the cheapest rates I've heard of in this town, so I'm sure it's great for learning how to work clay, as well! read more
