If you really want to hear about this Austin Ale House place, it's about as depressing as every other bar people run to when they want to pretend they're having a grand old time. ​You look at the outside first, and it's got this big black sign with "AUSTIN'S ALE HOUSE" painted in white block letters over fake-looking stone veneer and lattice windows. They put "Sports Bar" in the online listing so all the hotshot, sports crazed lunatics know exactly where to go to yell at a screen. ​Inside, it's the same old story. You've got a long, dark wood bar behind a long dark haired bartender in tight black clothes. These walls are lined with glowing television screens showing sports games like the damn Jets that everyone is paying attention to but me. When i walked in there's a guy sitting by himself at the bar in a khaki shirt, staring down at his hands or his phone, looking completely miserable while light bulbs that were hanging from the ceiling in what looked like metal cages were tearing at my retina. (In all fairness, i do have an eye issue). That's what people do it seems to me, they pay money to go sit in a dark room with and feel lonely, together. Its free at the county lock up and if you drink and drive, step right up and blow because your taking the ride to central booking. I know nothing about this. ​Then I looked over at the bar top and they've got these fancy beer glasses filled up to the brim, a cool dark draft beer in a pint and a Stella Artois in a chalice, it was sitting right in front of me but it wasnt mine. I beckoned the bartender to "let me have the same". Reflections of glowing televisions illuminated by neon blue lights and rows of prettu liquor bottles above me and more beers being passed around to my right and to my left. Outside, it's completely packed under these warm hanging lights, full of people crammed together in the dark. I noticed that lot of guys wearing baseball caps and that is so prole, leave the baseball hat at home, your an adult, dress like one. They're was even a guy wearing a cowboy hat standing around drinking his beer, talking loud. I wore a cowboy hat once, i was seven years old. It just drives me crazy. The whole place is just sports screens, wooden bar stools, hanging bulbs, and a bunch of phonies trying to forget how depressed they are. It really is. read more

I wanted to like the wings so much more than I did. While the deal is good on DoorDash because they are buy one get one, the wings did not taste fresh and were overcooked and just not appealing at all. The amount of fatty skin and grizzle compared to ratio of actual meat on the wings was not pleasing. I have had a chicken sandwich with onion rings once before and that was pretty decent, so it's not all negative. I just would never get the wings again. read more

We were able to be seated right away on a Saturday night for dinner and sat in the bar dining room. Beer is served cold and their cocktails are nicely made. We went for the shell steaks with a salad added on. The salad arrived first and was a fairly large portion. Fresh and tasty. The steaks arrived looking good. My steak was actually perfectly cooked, it was just on the bland side. I don't know why they don't season their steaks much, if at all. Fries were not really hot and the shoe string fries, were different than the fries they used to have. Well cooked veggies were also served along with the steak. It would have been 4 stars if things were season properly. Service is still on the slow side, so a quick meal typically isn't possible. All in all Austin's Ale House is a neighborhood staple, that could really be wonderfully with some more attention to flavors. read more

One side of the interior dining space feels formal. The other side near the bar is loud and casual. The outdoor tables flow into a beer garden right next to the train station. It all looks like something you would find down a European hidden street, plus some NYC grit and grime. The outside door in the back rattles the back dining room. That was pretty annoying, but the portions are large. Food is decent to good. Late night the place is more like a club. Maybe this place is trying to be too much, but it seems like it is working. Austin's Ale House never disappoints. We came here for dinner and made reservations on Open Table. We sat down quickly and the waitress came right out with water and menus. We ordered drinks and wings well done with the BBQ sauce on the side. Amazing! We then ordered a burger, chicken quesadilla, and the Voo Doo Pasta. The burger was cooked perfectly. The chicken quesadillas were really good and came with all the sides. The Voo Doo Pasta I mixed it up and had it with Penne pasta and added chicken to it. Bar area if very spacious and accommodating. The restaurant inside area is nice with accommodations for good amount of patrons. Outside is nice with entertainment. Service tonight was a bit slow considering it wasn't crowded. But dining area was clean and nice looking. It wasn't too noisy inside so easy to have conversations. Outside was a bit noisy but that is the point to drink and be merry. My panini was ok just needs a sauce option to be more appealing IMO. The chicken empanadas were very good. Austin's Ale House has been around for a while and as a native of Queens--can't believe it took me moving out of the borough to finally step foot in this establishment after seeing a movie at the Kew Gardens Cinema across the street. Think of it as a neighborhood haunt with a sports bar that dominates half of the restaurant. Alas, my family was looking for a warm place to enjoy a comfort food kind of meal. So we all got the early bird special with came with an app, an entree and a dessert all for 32$ which wasn't bad at all. My wife and I went here this past Saturday (8/1) around 8 pm. We were seated in the far corner of their outdoor dining area and got water and menus immediately. The restaurant was not busy. We waited over 20 minutes without any server coming to take our drink or food order. The final straw was when we saw the young, tall, brown haired guy that sat us, come out to share a beer with a table of people he seemed to know. It didn't appear that he was on a break. I went for lunch and had the 1/2 sandwich special, which came with your choice of fries, cup of soup, or salad (caesar or garden).. I chose the corned beef reuben on rye with a garden salad. The 1/2 sandwich was served open-face and included swiss, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing. The garden salad was a very generous serving with an italian dressing on the side. All were wonderful. I ordered a pint of a NY State "hazy IPA," which went perfectly with the food and tasted terrific. We sat in the "grassy" (it's turf) area which is shaded by trees. Really bad service, asked a guy outside for help getting a drink, he walked past me and said that he would get a host (he was hiding in the outside closet texting and didn't even say hello lolol I tell him oh I can talk to a host, go in through a back door and then I get to the host booth and three people all talking just look at me - once again no hello. I have been coming to this establishment for years here and there and i usually sit alone with beer and people watch. It can be lively and entertaining at times. (happy hour is best). Its a long standing neighborhood bar & restaurant with a large outdoor patio. Beer selection is good. Menu is extensive. Service is inconsistent. The employees are doing a disservice to the owners by constantly trash talking each other publicly. Reminder - customers want to have fun and not hear about your work drama. Staff do a lot of chatting in an area by the kitchen. How about chat with customers instead? Make yourselves a nice tip. Kindness can go a long way, especially if you see someone who sits alone. Lots of room for improvement from my point of view. Employees walk past spills and garbage on the floors at time despite being notified. Walked in on a Friday night around 9pm while a basketball & baseball game was on, bar was packed! Dining area was pretty full but they had a few empty tables all the way in back. We decided to sit outside. Waitress came over right away with our drinks, we ordered hot wings and calamari for appetizers, wings came out quickly. I've never seen such sad wings in my life, super tiny and overcooked, they should be embarrassed to serve this. Waitress disappeared, had to go inside to flag someone down. Finally someone came over and said they looked like that because they were running out of wings, they offer a special on wings inside but not outside, they have the nerve to charge $15.95 for those wings! Calamari took over 1/2 hr to come out, underwhelming & spicy. Margarita glass had a huge crack in it. Waitress never came back to take our entree order, not that we wanted to order anything else at that point. Went to Dani's and brought pizza in after seeing a few people around us doing the same. Everyone is very friendly, and you're greeted as soon as you walk in the establishment seated right away. The only reason I went to this place is because some friends of mine took me for food and this was their choice. I don't like spending other people's money so I tried to find something as cheap as possible which in this place is VERY difficult. I ended up getting a cheeseburger with a trio of fries, sweet potato fries and onion rings. It was $18!! I can make SO MANY burgers for $18. Absolutely ridiculous!! I did feel bad getting but everything else was WAY more pricy. It tastes like a regular burger. Nothing really special about it. The one good thing is that the portion size was huge. I took home most of the meal cause I couldn't finish it. Definitely would NOT go back on my own cause I would never pay what they're asking for anything they serve. He went with a Thursday night rib special. I got the ribeye steak. The chef was nice enough to give me this gravy that comes with another steak and it was delicious. My steak was cooked perfectly. I enjoy coming to this restaurant when I am in the area. The food is good, the restaurant dining area is quiet, and the waitstaff provides good service. There is the bar area and an additional room with tables and the bar area can get loud. There are several large screen televisionsm. The dining room area is separated from the bar area and is much quieter and there are also large screen televisions there. I have had many of the dinners here. The salmon is well prepared and there are three sauces to choose from, all three are good. The steaks are also well seasoned and prepared. My husband and I have been meaning to go here for a while. We finally decided to go one night and we loved it!! The bar atmosphere is really fun and they have a quiet dining area as well as an area right by the bar that is a bit louder. We are by the bar, but we didn't feel it was overly loud. I assume it can get loud. We were impressed with the quick service to seat us. We at first sat at a table that one of the diners at the table next to us was cussing up a storm and being super dramatic. We didn't want to hear her dramatic story so we asked to move. They moved us immediately and we're so apologetic even though it wasn't their fault. We each ordered beer. I had the Keg and Lantern Beyond the Haze IPA. It was delicious and may be my new favorite Hazy IPA. Darren got his favorite Alagash. For an appetizer, we got Truffled Bacon and Jalapeno Mac and Cheese Bites because we checked into Yelp and received 1/2 off an appetizer. We really enjoyed them! For my entree, I ordered French onion soup. It wasn't horrible, but not great. I wouldn't get it again. Darren really liked his steak sandwich. We had a great time and will for sure be back. I gave AAH 2 stars in my last review. Since then, I have revisited many times due to location and convenience. And I stand by that 2 star review. They're understaffed. It takes forever for anyone to check on you and even longer to close out your tab. The food is mostly mediocre and the prices have increased. So why the junk from 2 to 3 stars? Tonight I was craving shepherds pie. And this is one dish that was well executed in both flavor and packaging! I've been here two times for brunch in the last couple of weeks. Once as a party of two and another time with a party of over 20. Both times we were seated outdoors. The outdoor seating is right by the train tracks so it might be a bit loud when the train passes by but it's not that frequent on the weekend anyways. The outdoor space has 3 areas, a garden area that has trees and astro turf, an area covered by a large tent and a smaller open space close to a water feature. I would say at their busiest about 60% of the tables are filled. While you can order brunch, you can also order a la carte. However I definitely recommend ordering off the brunch menu if your intention was to have breakfast foods. Yes, the brunch menu only has breakfast items and is limited to omelettes, huevos rancheros, breakfast burrito, frittata, steak and eggs and french toast (I might have missed an item or two). I'm recommending this because brunch comes with a drink (mimosa, screw driver, bloody mary), tea or coffee, a bagel or a muffin, a fruit cup and your meal for $24 to $26. It's quite a value. The two times I have been here, the staff has been great, very accommodating and attentive. And note the patio area usually only has about 3 people on staff, so it's not a lot of people which to me makes the level of service seem even more impressive. Now onto the food. I have only had the steak and eggs and tasted the frittata and breakfast burrito. Everything seasoned well and the portions are generous. The steak is typically over the temp I asked for but not so egregious as being well done. Have to give props to Colleen and her staff for accommodating our large party. Though there were issues with the food timing, I leave that to the understaffed part. But all-in all will be going back to Austin's Ale House for brunch and likely other meals in the future. read more
