Great service for an antique pocket watch that belonged to my great uncle who worked on the railroad.

Dropped in for a quick watch battery replacement on two inexpensive Timex watches (no appointment needed). They took care of both in about 10 minutes while I waited. $25 (plus tax) each battery, labor included - very very reasonable. The nice owner said that there is a one-year warranty on the batteries and that the batteries should be good for 3-5 years. Super quick and efficient - very pleased. I have come to this shop for many years, at least 30 or so; even through changes in management, the place is the reliable go-to place to repair or to buy vintage time pieces. I brought my 'vintage' 1992 Casio DW400 Tachymeter in today, May 15, and Vlad &co. fixed me up in less than five minutes, and for very little money compared to other watch shops. I live in South Austin and was told by the watch repair shop close to my house that 'the battery for the watch was no longer manufactured,' and that I was out of luck. I drove across town to Old Timers and they had my watch ticking again in no time. I should have come here in the first place--that watch has a lot of sentimental value for me. (FWIW it's the watch that van Damme wore in Timecop.) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. While we're here they also have a tasteful selection of pre-owned watches including Rolexes. (I prefer my Casio!) I purchased a wall clock with chimes on the internet. Fedex had a delay in delivery. When box arrived it was beat up and the top of the clock's wooden frame had a chip on it and inside the clock a piece of the mechanism had come lose and fallen. I couldn't find where it went, I took the clock to Austin's Old Timer Clock and Watch Repair and in a few minutes the owner had reinstalled the piece and hung the pendulum. Every so often I have an experience that amazes me. This is a review in that category. I can't say enough good about Vlad and the team at the austin old timer clock and watch repair. I have taken my mom's clock there for years. Yesterday, I secretly took the clock off my mom's wall and took it into the clock shop as a surprise for xmas. It was a clock that the clock shop had previously fixed, but that was out of beat due to our mishandling. The clock can be temperamental, but I guess if I was 120-ish years old I would be temperamental too. haha. Vlad disassembled the clock and fixed it in no time while I waited. On top of that, he said there was no charge. I drove the clock directly to my mom's house and rehung it. She was so happy to hear the tick-tock of the clock again. Best surprise xmas gift ever. I needed to get some links removed from my new Invicta and a friend had suggested using OldTimer because they had done such an amazing job restoring her father's 70's Casio watch. I did not have an appointment and just walked in and the repair guy knew without asking what I was there for. He told me he could take the links out and the price and told me it would be just a few minutes. He did a great job and I was in and out in less than 20 minutes. Located on 35th street between Jefferson and Jackson on the South side of the street I would strongly suggest approaching the store going East on 35th. It's easier to turn right into the parking spaces than left. (That's more of a tip) They also have many old, I'm guessing restored, wall clocks and grandfather clocks. I have to agree with the owner of the pocket watch. The comment that stood out the most was the lack of concern they have regarding untimely delays. It took over four months for my clock piece to be repaired. I did appreciate that they do come to you home. I have a very fragile grandfather clock (cir. 1700's) and is far too fragile to move. I'm really not sure what went wrong here. I'd been a fan of the Old Timer Clock Shop since the early 2000s, when I bought a wind-up pocket watch from them that I still use. They were the first place I thought of when a small, chrome alarm clock and music box that has been in my family for a couple generations was damaged in a fall off a table. I brought the music box in to them in August, 2017. The guy who looked at it seemed pretty sure it was something he could fix. He disassembled it and showed me where the internal damage was. He said it might take up to three months, but that he would let me know when it was done. He quoted me a price that I thought was very reasonable. It was actually less than I was willing to pay, though he never actually did the job. They would have my clock for the better part of a year without fixing it. Four months later, in mid-December 2017, I called to check on the status of the repair. He didn't apologize for the delay, and told me he not only hadn't had time to work on it but that since he had to travel it wouldn't be until January before he would have a chance. In February I tried getting back in touch but could only leave several messages, none of which were returned. In frustration, I picked up the clock to take it elsewhere. I had to return it to Old Timer, though, because the clock hadn't been reassembled correctly. They did fix that, and when I went to pick it up again I had a nice conversation with another employee* who told me that a 6 month wait on a repair was not normal for them, and that if I left it with them again he would make sure the repair happened in a timely way. Another four months later, and after again leaving several messages that were never returned, I retrieved it for the last time. *Or maybe owner? I don't know, but I remembered him from my visits to the store in the early 2000s. FWIW, he was very nice. Like I said, I'm not sure why this was such a terrible experience. I've never had so much trouble giving a local business $300 (hell, if they would have made time for it I'd have been willing to pay at least $200 more). I don't know why the guy who seemed so upbeat about being able to fix it never did the repair, nor why he never returned any of my messages. I know mine is the outlier review here. As I said up top, before this experience my feeling was that Old Timer was worth a full five stars (just browsing the store is a treat). But this sucked, from both a customer service and outcome perspective, and I can't think of a single reason I'd go back to them. If you happen to also have a little clock or music box needing repair, I'd suggest looking online. I found quite a few other providers in nearby states who expressed confidence in being able to fix it (it's with one of them now). read more

In order to fix it because of the intensive labor, was more than the watch cost. He could have worked on it and given me a big bill. He advised me against that which I appreciated very much. Everyone here provides outstanding service. On more than one occasion I have had simple repairs done and not charged a penny. Today I needed an adjustment to a metal watchband, and in less than five minutes I was all set, and again no charge. When I did have work completed and did pay, the cost was very reasonable and workmanship excellent. And, an added bonus...at 3:30 PM, all the grandfather clocks chime...so lovely. read more

I took in a watch that was last worn in 1968. The mechanism was full of rust and the face was tarnished. The watchmaker found that the model is a Brewster that was made by Bulova in 1943. It took a long time but the wonderful outcome makes the wait worth while. read more

I took two items into Bob Larson's Old Timer Clock Shop for repair at the same time: 1) A Seiko watch that was given to me as an anniversary present by my husband. Bob Larson's Old Timer Clock Shop allowed, after several months, that they lost said watch, but graciously offered to let me keep the loaner watch, which retailed for half the price (and had half the looks, to boot) as a consolation prize. 2) My great-grandmother's antique mantel clock, which really just needed some sprucing up and cleaning of the gears to get it in tip top running shape. Ever since its stay at Bob Larson's Old Timer Clock Shop, after which I was happy to receive it back again in one piece, the clock has made distressing sproinging, clicking, and clunking noises. Sometimes for variety, the minute hand will decide that life is no longer worth living and fling itself off the clock face. Some would say to take my clock back to the shop and let them try to make it right, but I'm afraid that it might enter the Bermuda Triangle that my watch disappeared into. Besides, there's nothing like reading a scary book on a dark windy night and having the clock make an ominous clunk just before you realize that it's been midnight for the last hour, and that clatter you heard a while back was the minute hand leaping to its demise. Wow. Simply wow. I brought my watch in today to have a pusher put back on it. Another watchmaker quoted me a price of $650 to make the repairs and re-seal the watch. Scott offered to attempt the repair while I waited for the insanely low price of $20. Needless to say, I took him up on his offer. Within 15 minutes, Scott returned with my watch repaired. He walked me through the work he did and explained that the gaskets and seals were still intact from the last repair. He was gracious, kind, willing to explain his work, and a true craftsman. I cannot recommend Scott enough to anyone who needs watch repairs done. Honesty, integrity, and customer service will win me over any day. Scott won me over today. read more

I just bought a new Casio from Amazon and it was way too big for my wrist. I'm from Austin and have passed by Bob Larson's hundreds of times and thought of them first. I called at 5:10 PM on a Monday, and they said they were closing at 5:30 PM. I asked if I could hop in my car right then and get there before they closed so I could have my watch fit before I left for Thanksgiving break, and they were really understanding. I arrived at 5:28 PM and felt terrible! The man I talked to on the phone gave me a smile and the "come in" sign, and they started on it right away. Twenty minutes later and two short fittings, I have a perfectly fit watch. The cost was only $20, and their friendliness and quickness were totally worth it. Sidenote: While I was waiting I checked out the small shop and all the photos and letters Bob Larson had hanging. He seems like a really sweet guy, there were letters from public schools thanking him for his work on a youth development project, and apparently he was personally asked to fix a huge clock in Williamson County back in the day. So even if Walmart could fix my watch for cheaper, I'd rather support this business! read more

No, I don't work there, but I've gotten to know the guys at the shop (Marion, Scott, & Howard) pretty well over the past couple of years just from stopping by from time to time to discuss my passion (watch collecting) and for any service I need to have done. I've had 5-10 watches worked on here over the years and I've been extremely satisfied with the work they provide and the cost (which is often much less than their competitors). No job is too big or too small for this crew and the way they treat their customers (e.g. being very friendly and going out of their way to explain things in simple terms) really says a lot. read more

They also resized my Cartier watch and changed the batteries and didn't charge for the resize. We ended up bringing three watches and waited no more than 30 min for everything. As far as clocks are concerned, Old Timer is moderate to mediocre in terms of service, but the turnaround time is very long. David the (Clock Doctor) is highly respected and is contracted by Old Timer and is the only reason why I brought my clock to be repaired there. With respect to watch repair, I would go elsewhere such as Martinez and Hood. I had several watches repaired at Old Timer and two out of three had to be returned for addition service. One is still in their care and I have been waiting for over one year for repairs. read more

This is a wonderful shop. They are honest and took care of me right away. I wanted to fix an old Cuckoo clock, the owner opened it up, took his time and then told me it was not worth it to get it fixed. It would cost about $700 to fix it. This place had me at the clever name, but after trying three jewelry stores in search of a plain, black, leather replacement watch band (and finding only black and gold, black with thick white saddle stitching, black with garish fake crocodile print, etc.) I was nearing despair. On a whim I stopped into what I assumed was strictly the preserve of grandfather and cuckoo clocks, and to my surprise found tons of cool, old watches, a super-friendly watch maker and the strangely illusive plain, black watch band! I sent out a few emails to some watch places about my automatic Tissot running fast, and asking about typical pricing for regular maintenance. I received a phone call from a guy here about a half hour later. He was very nice and informed me about the pricing of a cleaning, then went on to suggest that it might just need to be adjusted or demagnetized, which wouldn't take long and they would do for free if that was the case (in the hopes of garnering future service). So I stopped by, turned out that it just needed to be demagnetized, and was done in about 30 seconds. I clearly didn't know much about watches other than the random Googling I'd been doing to try and get myself up to speed, and I really appreciated that they were honest and really just trying to help - they could have taken my watch in for a $200 service and I wouldn't have been the wiser, but instead took the time to give me more information. I'll definitely be coming back in the future with any issues I might have with my watch and would wholeheartedly recommend them. read more
