I took my favorite MCM style Robert Abbey wall clock to be repaired, unsure of why it was no longer keeping time and appeared to be constantly getting stuck. I figured it probably needed new parts of some sort and was hoping I wouldn't have to replace any of the original pieces. The owner took one look at it and told me that the minute hand was just slightly bent and was getting stuck. Within minutes, he straightened it and refused any payment whatsoever. I stumbled on to Jason and McGuire's Clocks when I was having a lamp repaired next door at Tipler's (another Austin institution). I have an old Chelsea ship's bell clock. I mentioned to Jason that the hour and minute hands were not aligned correctly. He told me that they were friction fitted and that he should be able to sort it out for me. Yesterday I went to pick up my lamp and brought the clock into McGuire's. Jason quickly fixed it for me and refused payment. In a 'throw away' world filled with knock offs made in China, it so nice to find a shop that not only loves what they are doing but is preserving a way of telling time that we need our children and grandchildren to remember. read more

I guess Karen at McGuire's Clocks heard me coming because she was in full form two days ago when I asked about getting my grandfather clock overhauled. First off she would not let me talk to the one man who would actually be doing the work on my clock because he was "too busy". So she put me on hold to give him all the details about my clock. She came back shortly and gave me the price: $2,500. Now, for that kind of money it would have been very helpful if I could have had a few minutes of the repairman's time to ask him some questions about his knowledge of this particular 100 year old clock. But he was "too busy". He was too busy to make $2,500 off me, to give me a minute of his precious time. Let THAT sink in. So I called three other clock repair places in the general vicinity, all very qualified, and I was able to talk directly to the repair person. And guess what? Every estimate I got came in at $1,200 to $1,500. At least $1000 less than McGuire's wanted. Let that sink in. Well needless to say I would never do business with McGuire's but I'm left feeling really sorry for anyone who actually does do business with them. Thanks for nothing Karen. read more

We had a great experience with McGuire's Clocks that I want to share. My wife and I were looking to buy a grandfather clock for our home and, like with most things now days, I went online searching. We must have looked at a hundred clocks, new and old, and then one Saturday decided to head to Austin to see some in person. Looking up a clock company revealed only one company in town. McGuire's is a small storefront with a whole lot of clocks to look at. If you're looking to know more about them, your expert needs to be Jason first and foremost. Jason also provides the community a wonderful service by periodically doing videos on YouTube, not only sharing their inventory but also informative how-to videos on their setup and care. Our visit was well worth the drive because Jason spent all the time in the world with us going over not only the mechanisms, but also the craftmanship and types of wood used, and areas of the world the various clocks are made. After all, it can be a big investment in something that isn't considered an essential item, but one that is adopted as an heirloom piece to be passed down through the generations. With Jason's guidance, we made our selection and unfortunately the one we wanted wasn't in stock. We ordered it and in about 2 months, our new clock was shipped to McGuire's. Since we were off on vacation for a few weeks, and since Jason wants to receive all clocks ordered so he can unpack them and check them over for proper functionality and issues in advance, he kept our clock for us until our return. He then delivered the clock for us, set it up in the location we made for it, and gave us all the information we needed to properly care for it. Everyone today wants to go to the internet and get their stuff there but let me tell you first-hand that if we did that, sure we'd get a clock shipped to us, but we'd have to figure out how to set it up and also know enough to check it over for any issues. And looking back on our experience, we would have paid more buying one on line, with less guidance, than we did with McGuire's. Do yourself a favor, if you're in the Austin area, entrust yourself to McGuire's Clocks and Jason's care. It was a first rate experience for us. read more

McGuires cleaned and repaired 2 clocks for me, and I've been super happy with their service each time. 1st Repair: I brought in a mid-century wall clock to be repaired, expecting to have to drop it off. The owner of the business was super nice and educated me about the clock (mentioning its history and that the hands on the clock were not original), and even stayed a little late after the store closed to repair it while I waited. He had a great eye for aesthetics and went above and beyond by offering to let me pick out other clock hands that would better match the mid-century style of the clock. He also suggested that I add a second hand. All of this was included in the original price he quoted me. He was even nice and patient when I changed my mind and decided to select a different set of hands halfway through the process. 2nd Repair: I dropped off a mid-century desk clock for major modifications. McGuires took the clock apart, replaced the clock mechanism, replaced the electric cord, and made it so that I could still light up the clock. I have been working on a pallet clock for weeks and when I finally try to put the hands on the clock I completely mess up and made three different trips to a craft store spent over $30 not including gas and time. I found this place using my yelp app and when I called to explain my situation and hoping they wouldn't laugh they asked to bring it in and they would help. I just moved to Austin and needed to get a family clock cleaned and repaired. I read the reviews on yelp and decided to give it a try. No sooner did we walk in the door when an older gentleman behind the counter asks how he can help. I explained that the clock stops working and I think it needs to be cleaned and repaired. He states that it will be over 900.00 to get it cleaned and repaired and wants to take out the original working system of the clock and put in a plastic mechanism since that would be cheaper and the clocks not worth much anyway. I didn't know what to say. The cost I expected but telling me it's not worth cleaning and keeping the original parts I will never understand. Enough said, I took my clock and left. In response to why this was a one star review. You were unwilling to do what I wanted. I wanted to have clock cleaned and repaired and was told it wasn't worth doing since that exceeded the clocks value. I understand the value of the clock may not be worth much but in sentimental value it's priceless. The fact that what I wanted to have done was dismissed based on the gentleman's personal opinion which was unprofessional and rude. It didn't leave me wanting to trust him with the clock. And I asked him if he would be willing to clean it and he said it's not worth it, putting the plastic mechanism in was all he wanted to do. Needless to say I found someone who saw the clock and did the work for less by the way and it runs beautifully with the original parts. read more

I just love this little clock shop. I have been here twice to have the battery on my watch replaced; it is a decent watch and I would not trust just anyone with it. But these people are pros. $15 tax inclusive for a watch battery done on the spot. I think it took less than 10 minutes this time. The best part is browsing the new and antique wall, grandfather, and other clocks while you wait. I saw a few $2K to $6K antique clocks that I felt like I could not live without, but until I get around to designing the home interior of my dreams, I guess I'll have to leave them there in the shop. McGuire's has repaired probably half a dozen clocks for me and my family over the years. Jason just finished repairing a mid Century piece that belonged to my Aunt and Uncle. He went above and beyond on repair, also treating some damaged wood as well as delivering and providing clear instructions. They are local, they do a great job and have always been more than courteous. It is clear that they are passionate about their craft. Highly recommend. Went in for a simple battery replacement. The lady said she'd go check to see if it could be replaced. Five minutes she comes back and its done and in working order. The guy realizes its a more complex watch and offered to have his stepson set the time precisely for me if I wanted that done. Basically, it was a cheap, easy, quick and friendly experience. I was looking for a statement mantle clock with a deep beautiful chime and I came home with this Seth Thomas beauty. I'm so happy with my purchase and all the help I was given on being shown how to wind the clock weekly, fine tune time if needed from the front or the back via the pendulum and how to muffle the chime if needed in the evening. I called Howard Miller customer service this morning and they confirmed there were no CEVA Logistics restrictions in my area. I find out from you this afternoon almost 5 days later via email that you can order the clock but you still don't know the total price. Who's on first? You didn't get this sale for good reason. There was no urgency on your part whatsoever and I found another dealer. Jason had a very nice video of the Eisenhower which clinched my decision to buy it.
