I came in again after quite a few months. The finger-print-readers were thankfully gone which expedited the process of checking in. Alicia was at the counter helping a customer in front of me which took very little time. After speaking with Alicia about plans/membership/cost/level of service I decided to purchase a 6 visit Level 5 membership. The transaction was simple, quick and the wait for the bed that I had requested to be prepared after a customer had finished their 12 minute session I was in. There are certainly a lot of salons out there but in the 3+ years that I've been coming here during the season, it's never been a waste of time or an unpleasant experience at this location. When I first went to Australian Tan last summer, I would have given it 3 stars at best. However, there has been some turnover and this place pretty much rocks now! I love Claire. I would probably hire her for any customer facing job on the planet. She is so upbeat and fun while still very knowledgeable about all things tanning. Claire got me hooked on the spray tan and it has been life changing. The spray tan here is definitely not what I remember from a decade ago! The color is great and the team does a fantastic job of helping you figure out what is right for you. As a pale skinned blonde, I look best doing a Level 1 two times. Who knew? Answer - the team at Australian Tan. Although I have been a pretty big fan of this location for a few months now, a recent visit where I chatted with Nicki and Celeste pushed it over the top and made me want to submit a review. Nicki is SUPER sweet and extremely helpful. She made me feel like a million bucks with a compliment on my eyelashes. Celeste seems to be the momma bear for this group and is just really cool. Definitely someone you would want to have a glass of wine with so you could get all of her beauty tips while having a great time. Again, if you are interested in a spray tan - try this place out. It's so easy and you will feel amazing afterwards. A Few Pro Tips for Spray Tanning: * Exfoliate before you go! * Don't use any lotion, deodorant or makeup if possible. There are baby wipes in the spray tan area but its not the same as going in with clean skin that. This helps the tan set evenly. * Wear loose clothing. * It will stain items that you cannot launder. Like leather soles in super fancy flats. Just sayin' * Use the lotion that blocks the spray tan from setting liberally on your hands and feet. Trust me. * If you plan to go more than once, buy the primer lotion/oil. It makes the spray tan last twice as long. * Most importantly, ask for assistance if you need it! I came to this tanning place with the 5 day groupon & signed up afterwards because I really love this place. The salon is more high end than any other i've been too. The beds are beautiful, high-tech and clean, and the whole place is just gorgeous. Celeste, the manager, is very knowledgeable about tanning beds, products, how the skin reacts, etc. She was awesome to talk to and you can tell she truly believes in the efficiency of their beds and lotions. She was also very transparent when it came to pricing, freezing your account, and cancellations. I do not feel at all like they are trying to trick people out of money or hide some hidden fees/rules. I've seen a few other employees now as well. I didn't catch their names but each employee was super friendly & answered any questions I had. The personnel at the store are perfectly nice and the equipment seemed fine. The real problem is their membership system is shady at best, unethical at worst. All options push you toward membership which is easy to sign up for but they make you jump though all kinds of hoops to cancel. You can't cancel online, you can't cancel over the phone, you can even cancel in person at the store. You have to mail a letter to their headquarters and then 2-4 weeks later they take the email address from your cancelation letter and send you an email telling you that you shouldn't cancel and if you don't reply to that message insisting that you want to cancel (of if it end up in your junk mail) they will just keep charging you until your write another letter. read more

I'm never going back...thanks to the receptionist who's name starts with a "P"...and has blk short hair. I've been tanning for about six years, and I have been to several salons.. Since I visit Sunnyvale frequently, I decided to try out Australian Tanning. There were two receptionists, and the "P" girl said she couldn't help me because she was on her break, okaaaay?? then why are you standing behind the counter staring at me? anyway, not a big deal.... then after i finished tanning i asked a different receptionist (very friendly) if i could become a member, but since i had already paid for my session i asked if she could just credit the amount to the new grand total, and she said, yes. Well, "P" decided to help me...and she told me..."No, sorry...my computer wont allow that...you have to pay a new amount"...which amounted to $170...lol. Yea, i don't think so. Terrible!! This place is a complete scam. I have worked in a tanning salon, been tanning at numerous places in the last 10 years, and never have I experienced this level of shady business. I don't blame the worker who explained the packages to me but this place has the MOST confusing packages ever and you WILL get ripped off if you are not careful and do not ask the right questions. If you buy a no commitment package it means you still have to cancel before a certain time to not get charged, and be warned...if you join half way through the month you WILL be charged for next month even if you buy a no commitment package and you call to cancel the same day as you first stepped in the place. It took the guy forever to explain that there is no way I can tan for just the rest of the month (as I was very, very clear that I only wanted a tan for the rest of this month). I don't trust this place at all - its whole strategy is to make money off of unsuspecting customers. If it took me half an hr to ask the right questions and I'm an experienced tanner, imagine how badly they will take advantage of an unexperienced tanner. Go to Ingrids in Palo Alto instead. Might sound more expensive at first but at least their packages are listed in black and white. read more

A manager from Australian Tan contacted me regarding my review and offered an apology for my experiences. She also explained what they are doing to improve the situations I presented, which I feel shows they truly care about there business and want to learn from bad situations. The manager did place some free tans in my name and stated she hopes I will give them a try again in the future. I plan to allow them some time to put the changes mentioned into place and try them again. Purely based upon the great communication from the manager in response to my review I am revising my review to 2 stars. Hopefully when I visit them again in a few months or so I can change it to 5 stars....we will see. read more

Avoid this place. It's dirty and you will have to wait typically 30 min+ for tanning. There is only 1 bed that is what I'd call "modern" the rest are probably at least 10 years old. The spray tan is so bad that I've actually gone to purchase home spray tanner to fix. Mediocre beds, terrible spray tan. And the place is pretty dirty. I always put a towel down on the floor because it feels so disgusting. The front desk staff is not helpful. The girls are usually on their iPhones and act like it's an inconvenience to help the guests. Also, beware of buying a membership They make it incredibly hard to cancel or freeze your account- you have to mail in a form. Hope you have a stamp and envelope on hand! oh, and it's YOUR responsibility to make sure it gets cancelled? AWFUL. They charged me $262 for no services at all. Surprise! I contacted the "guest services" to express being unhappy with the service and salon and they refused to provide me any refund for billing me for nothing. There are much better tanning options in the Santa Clara/Sunnyvale area, and I will be taking my business there. AustralianTans charges fees like they are high-end, but I don't even want their services for free. read more

I used to love those place. I've been a frequent cockailer for years (tan in beds and spray tan) but their versa spa is not working and I have let the team know the last three times I have gone in there and come out looking like a leopard! You should not be spotted after a spray tan. But the front desk team could care less - they are more interested in talking about their weekend plans then customer service. When I called to cancel they told me that I had to fill out paper work from their website and send it in. WHY CAN"T I JUST CALL TO CANCEL!!! I would even be ok with walking into the salon to do so as well! I was able to sign up in the store I should be able to cancel there as well. Then they mention that it should have tracking number - so now you are telling me I need to spend more money! This is absolutely absurd! read more

You have to be kidding me with all these raves...I will admit the staff was nice and friendly; however, it is not my responsibility as a first time client to know how your beds work. Because of the lack of instruction on how the beds operate (each button looks similar AND are not labeled) I lost significant tanning time. So yes, I asked for a credit to my account because I only got to use the bed for 3 minutes and thats not worth 30 bones. My comment to Australian Tanning Co is to better train your staff for new clients and label the buttons on your bed so there is no confusion. 1 star for paying $10 per minute of tanning received and the lack of a refund for my experience. Buyer beware. This place looks decent from the outside, but be cautious when you try to cancel membership. They do not mention that you have to send certified mail request 14 days prior to the day you end your membership. It is easier to convince the IRS to not pay taxes than cancel a tanning membership from these crooks. Also they do not tell you when they run a special deal which is always after you pay the top price. They will not give you the special even if it is 1 day after you pay. Just finished my first tanning session at this tanning salon and I am ecstatic! I had the pleasure of working with the manager Jessica. I always do everything last minute and I have 3 international beach trips in 10 days. So I came in needing to tan quickly. Jessica helped me create a plan with the right product and the right bed level, based on my skin type, to create the desired look I want for my trip. She was so kind, knowledgeable, and efficient. Pretty good prices for indoor tanning and this location is conveniently located near my work- so it is perfect for lunch time tan breaks :) The level 3 & 4 are my favorite. The level 1 makes me seriously claustrophobic... It's overall decent. I just got my first ever spray tan here tonight, and I might've had the best customer service experience I've ever had here too. The spray tan was quick and easy ($20 regularly) and the staff helped me decide which level would be ideal for my current skin tone (2) without being unnatural. Had to wait a little while because of the person in front of me, but the girls working were both so friendly and we totally just chatted about the weekend and they were really nice and information when I asked them questions about the spray tan booth. I have been with Australia for over six months now (pay monthly) to tan unlimited. You can pay for each visit, but the monthly membership is a easy saver especially if you like to keep your skin looking healthy and stunning. I believe that it is important to have a sense of comfortability while tanning, and this place has it! The staff is very informative and friendly. Reaching the mid to upper mid-back can be a bit tough, so I ask the girl's for assistance to apply lotion. Of course, they have no problem. So yea I went in two weeks before my wedding not knowing a thing about what I wanted but I knew I didn't want to turn orange. The girls there in particular a girl name Catalyn I think, really helped explain what I might want and how to get the best deal. She was extremely nice and understanding of my inexperience. After years of working almost across the street from this location I had no idea it was there. Thanks to a coworker she got me buzzed on tanning again after a 2 year absence. Plus I want to get bronzed for Vegas in 2 months. I was pleasantly greeted by two young girls at the counter. Christina (i think) was really nice/honest about the packages and lotions. Ended up going with he Deluxe Passport b/c it's moderately priced for 1year unlimited w/ two free up grades. The only thing I wish they had more of a selection of lotions to choose from for purchase. Being fair skin she recommended a level 5 bed and I wouldn't of know that without her spilling her knowledge! I got a late start on tanning for my wedding in 2 weeks. I went to Australian Tan in Sunnyvale to see if getting a tan in less than 2 weeks was possible. Kristin A. is amazing! She listen to what I needed and presented me with several different options. She was thorough when she explained my different options and was very honest about pricing. She definitely did her best to give me the best package available where I could receive the most tans for the lowest price. I have a darker color after 1 session! Of course I did pick the bed level 3 and will work up to level 5. I also bought the Glam lotion that has added coloring to give you the quickest tan! I use to go to the location off of Blossom Hill and then I moved to Santa Clara. Although Planet Beach is closer to my home, I don't mind driving further to come here. This review is on their spray tans. I have had 4 spray tans done now. They have levels 1-3, 3 being the darkest. The girls always recommend level 2 for me, I tried level 2 for the first 3 times I spray tanned and never felt like I got any color. Yesterday I went for a 4th time and decided to use a level 3 and this time use a sticker so I could see the difference. (Ill attach the pict). It's been 12 hours, I haven't showered yet, and see very little color. But the smell... I always smell terrible after spray tanning, and it seems to last a couple of days (yes, even after showers). I upped my rating one star because the facility and staff are very nice. It is always clean and the staff are friendly and know what they are doing. I just don't recommend their spray tans. read more

I came here to tan a few times before my friend's wedding, and the salon was fantastic. On my first day there, the employee (Taylor, I believe) explained all the different beds and really listened to what I needed. The employees on my subsequent visits were all wonderful as well--I got recommendations for various lotions and didn't have to wait at all. The tanning beds and rooms were all clean and organized, and the whole process was very efficient. I would definitely recommend this salon for its cleanliness and friendly and knowledgeable staff. I suppose the only thing I wish was different here is the tanning package structure. There's no way to purchase packages of tans, e.g. 5 tans at once--it's either pay per use or monthly commitment. Because I only needed to tan a few times, the recurring monthly charge wouldn't work for me. Keep up the great work! read more

I initiated my membership, with the understanding that I could easily come in and cancel when I was getting ready to move back home. I attempted to cancel my membership, and was told that I would need to do it in writing, and it was "recommended" I send it via certified mail, just to ensure they received it. They obviously are not trying to create returning customers with these kinds of practices. I've gone to other types of establishments, and you walk in and cancel by signing some paperwork and establish what the last day of service is. Thank you Australian Tan for costing me $7 in postage, just to cancel your service. It's such a smart business practice to guarantee not to receive return customers, particularly this one! read more

This is the first bad review I have ever done! This place is a SCAM. I haven't gone tanning in at least 3 months and finally decided to cancel my service since I moved too far to ever even go. I call, they say you need to send in a written document off their website and mail it in... Really? Ok, fine! I do just that and get charged AGAIN! And even get charged 65 vs 45!! I know they can see I havent been been there for more than a couple of months, I explained that I no long live anywhere near any of their stores. I call to ask about the charge, she service report says I cant get my money back but if I want I can go through my bank to dispute it. Hell yes I will! I feel its only fair if I call to cancel, havent been to your company a solid 3 months, explained I no longer live in the area, and send in the paper you want so badly, that I dont get charged for the following month. I want my money back. They will lose potential customers this coming spring after I tell all my girlfriends about this place. Needless to say they make you send in a paper off their website via mail to postpone the cancellation period so they can CHARGE you again for something you aren't using! Something needs to be done about this business that has zero ethics and integrity!! read more

TOTAL SCAM. I can't believe this place is still operating. I was completely scammed into signing up for a 3 month tanning package, and was told payments would be end after that 3 month period. The salesperson assured me this was the case and I verified with her quite a few times that it would be cancelled and I wouldn't have to do anything at the end of the 3 months. I just found out that they've been continually charging my card every month for MORE than the even originally were, even though I haven't been in since! I've lost over $600. When I called to figure out what was going on, they were no help and refused to give me a refund even though I was LIED TO about what I was signing up for. I was so upset on the phone and they said there was nothing they could do. Thank goodness I caught it before they charged more...who knows how long they would have charged my card for. This place is completely unethical. There are far better tanning salons in the area - DO NOT GO HERE. I'll be taking this to the BBB. read more

At first i absolutly loved coming here, never had any wait, girls were friendly and happy to help me join. I ended up with a passport plus which is 69.99 plus taxes and services i was paying almost 80 a month. I was told i could down grade at any time and cancel at any time, with no waiting period with this membership. (Aparently this is "true" for any level membership not just the passport btw) Finally i wasnt coming as often as id originally hoped and came in to lower my membership when the 2 girls at the host desk explain how inconvienent this was and "it is a whole ordeal" to do. I looked around and didnt understand why they didnt want to lower my membership reguardless of the process....especially since i was the only person in the entire salon...no one was even in the beds and there were 2 staff members just hanging out. Maybe its a sales tactic?? So than i replied with can i just cancel my membership? And apprently you have to mail in a letter into coporate office and wait for them to contact u in order to cancel the membership. And it was 3 days away from the cutoff date where if it didnt get cancelled on time id get charged for another month! Yet they. Still didnt want to lower my membership so i could at the very least save 45$ that month. So i left and went to the campbell salon asked that staff member (who was working on her own, and had customers) to lower my membership. She was very kind didnt give me any hassle and lowered my memebersip in less than 2 minutes!!! I was very grateful for this wish i new her name. But it made me laugh how it was "too much of a hassle for the girls working at the sunnyvale salon" i also sent in a cancelation card to corporate office and still got charge another month and membership still hasnt been cancelled. I just was informed k need to resend another card in case the first one was lost. Honestly save ur time and ur money and go to a different company! read more

I was really hoping this was going to be a good place as it had everything I was looking for since I recently moved down here, however the equipment is constantly breaking and they don't have enough equipment for customer demand for example the cocoon wellness pod, only have one and the wait time when it does work can be an hour. Also management does not know how to staff in the evenings during the week day. I feel really bad for the staff as they are trying their best to serve the customers but one person during rush time is unacceptable. read more
