So for months my driver's side power window was giving me hints that it was going to break down or stop working eventually. Lately, every time I moved the window up or down it sounded like it was going to snag on something so I knew that wasn't the sound of a problem-free window. Today was the day. Sometime after lunch when I tried to move the window back up it would only go so far up and the back end was up higher than the front end of the window. And it wouldn't go all the way up either. Not even halfway. I got on Yelp and started doing research for something like, "repair power window". I got lots of hits. Limiting it to just those w/ mostly 5-star reviews left it down to about 4 businesses that were close enough to my area. It was towards the end of the Monday (my last day off of the weekend) so I didn't feel like going anywhere at the end of a long day of errands. After reading up on those 4 businesses it came down to just one that for sure does the mobile repairs on glass and windows... Auto Glass Wizards. It was about 3:30pm when I called, and to my surprise, someone answers. After answering a few questions, he agreed to come down to see my car. It probably took less than 1/2 an hour before he knocked on my door. After asking for my keys (to the car) he looked at the window and the weird position the window was left in (about 1/2 way up w/ the back end higher than the front). It is at this point that I should mention that "Johnny" has a partner w/ him. Upon talking to him, I find out that he is Johnny's father-in-law (Sikh) and they have both been doing this for 19 years. They don't have a shop and they do the mobile thing (only) 24 hours a day. Johnny says they work "25-hour days, 8 days a week". :) Johnny proceeded to get his tools (mostly his power socket tool and his manual socket wrenches and went to work disassembling the door's inside outer shell. He told me both on the phone and in person that most of the time the problem is that the regulator stops working. He had to take the glass out of the door. He tested some things and determined that the 3rd arm was bent and was probably snagging on something. He told me he was going to bend it back in to place and that that would do the job. And it did. There were no extra parts that needed to be ordered and the whole job probably took him less than 1/2 an hour to finish it. After he was done putting it all back together, he got some spray and wiped the glass of his fingerprints. He advised me to use WD-40 to spray along the window track edges (w/ the window down--the sides where the window would touch) to provid lubrication because he explained that something dries out over time. Basically it would help the window to move up and down better. Johnny finally says, "how does $65 sound?" I'm thrilled. He came out to my house (on the side of their van it says, "free mobile service") and on my schedule when most other shops are close to closing and did it quick and charged a fair price. I asked him if there was a fee to use my own credit card. He said there's no fee and they take all kinds of credit cards. I gave him my Discover Card and he asked me to sign his screen after I saw him type in 65.00. I don't know how but he says my receipt will be e-mailed to me. Since his price was so cheap I asked him if he had anything else doing that day. He asked me why. I told him I had a similar problem on another car where the car window would go down but it would not go back up unless you pulled it up. He agrees to look at it and he tests it a little bit. He explained that the problem was probably the motor. He says I can order it from AutoZone and call him to install it. I am not Sikh nor Indian but from my dealings w/ them, I have found them to be honest and honorable people. I like that they don't charge me a "diagnostic fee" to come out and look at my car like most mobile mechanics do. Just come out, figure out what the problem is, and fix it. I would call on Johnny again for power window issues should the need arise. read more

The Pros: Took my call and attempted to diagnose window issue by phone. As they do not carry regulators, had me order the part. The Cons: Came to my house, looked at car, decided it was not the regulator, attempted a fix on some plastic bead in the door. Took the $50 and window still makes a "crack" noise when going up and down. Mitigation: We spoke by phone about fact window still made noise. He said he would come back, never did. I do not begrudge him a fee for the diagnostic and coming to my house to look at issue. I would prefer cleaner communication such as "I can't fix that" or "that's a dealer issue" and then tell me what the house call fee is. If I knew it was $50 with no guarantee I likely would have made other choices. I would not use this service again. It is an esoteric issue but I do not have money to just throw for a house call, and then still be stuck with the noise. read more
