Hats off to Autometrics Auto Sales in El Cerrito, and the associated Autometrics Repair Shop in Berkeley on San Pablo Av. I recently bought a used car (a Volvo) from Paul of Autometrics. The car had a few minor oil leaks which Autometrics fixed at no cost. Over the next half-year I noticed that some of the leaks were re-appearing. Paul and I were both a little puzzled why this was happening. About a week after the warranty on our car ran out, as luck would have it, a large oil leak appeared. I had driven the car only about 300 miles. Paul was very gracious; even though the car was off warranty, he fixed the problem at no expense to my family. Over the years I have interfaced with many car salespeople (having worked in the auto leasing industry for five years); I found Paul to be extremely honest, concerned, and proactive in his handling of this situation. read more

We had taken our Toyota Sienna to TWO Toyota service centers and received estimates from $5,000-$7,000 for our repairs. We took it to Autometrics and they provided a thorough review of the entire car, (concurring with the Toyota service departments on much of the work), but giving us much more competitive pricing and were SO HELPFUL in prioritizing the work; what could wait, what is critical and how to make it work for us both financially as well as maintaining a safe family car. Extremely fair, communicative and responsible. They have worked on both my 2002 S60 Volvo and my 1998 Chevy Astro van. I brought the Volvo in for service last week and to have them diagnose a variety of problems - I planned on giving them a thumbs up to fix or a thumbs down and I would replace the car. I got a laundry list of a la carte options and ended up saying 'go' on all. When additional problems surfaced, they were appologetic (I was not surprised) and worked with me on the pricing as they knew my intentions AND loaned me a car in the interum. I have been driving for over 40 years and it was a level of service that I had yet to experience. Very happy; highly recommend. read more

They are very honest, competent and charge a fair price. After dealing with Steve's in El Cerrito and Albany, this is like a breath of fresh air! To compare, Steve's charged over $800 to change an ignition coil and spark plugs (and tried to charge even more until I explained they were trying to charge twice for labor since most of the labor to change the plugs was already paid for to change the coil), Autometrics charged less than $200 to change the coil on the same car less than two years later. Referred to Autometrics when I first moved to the bay and needed a smog check, they are now my go-to mechanics. Most recently, they repaired various locks and damages after my 95 Accord was stolen. They were nothing but gracious working with the insurance company (and me), to make the process as easy as possible for everyone. The mechanics are usually good, but the likable management at Autometrics is just plain dishonest. I have worked as an auto mechanic, so I know how a lot about diagnosing a car's problems. In the more than 10 years that I've gone to Autometrics they sometimes recommend unneeded repairs, but I've just said no. They usually do a good job of fixing things, but my last experience has me so pissed off that it is unlikely that I will never go there again. I just got my car back yesterday after they had it for FIVE days. A necessary part of the repair was left out of the estimate that Victor gave me over the phone, so the bill was higher than I expected; but what has me most upset is that the "check engine" light is now on (it was not on when I took the car in). Neither Victor nor Alfredo mentioned anything about it, so I suspect that they are trying to cover up a mistake. I know from previous experience that when they make a major mistake they just refuse to fix it. My last car had a stick shift and when Autometrics replaced the clutch they used a defective throw-out bearing which made a bad noise that drove me crazy. Autometrics kept hiding the problem by packing grease around the clutch arm pivot and claiming that was fixed. Predictably the noise kept coming back every couple of weeks. Everyone makes mistakes, but an honest business will admit it and fix it. read more

I was the seller of an Honda Odyssey Van. Potential buyer's took my Van to Autometrics in Berkeley for a buyer's inspection and I was present during the inspection. I returned to get the review of the inspection before the buyer's did. I was asked by the shop manager if I wanted them to keep the Van on the hoist and I said yes, we would want to be shown the anything that they found during the inspection. Just before the buyers arrived they took the Van off the hoist and parked it by the exit door. Autometrics gave the report to the buyers and they shared it with me. I asked the buyers to request that the Van be put back on the hoist so that Autometrics could show us what they were claiming was wrong with the Van. They refused on two requests. They claimed $825- needed to be done on my Van. I took the Van to my mechanic at Art's Automotive in Berkeley and they found only that the rear shocks needed to be done at a cost of $225- and nothing else. The difference between Autometrics and Art's Automotive is night and day. Check out the reviews for Art's Automotive and judge for yourself. Autometrics does not even deserve the one star rating I gave them. Don't trust these guys! read more
