I thought I had to go to Mechanic until all this happened. I do like your work. I just don't like the fact that you neglected to take a higher mileage Transmission in. It's not like you'd be paying for it. I would be if anything went wrong. it just would've been very nice if you could even have looked at it. I thought I had my new go to Mechanic because you do do good work and just because it has higher mileage doesn't mean it should be neglected or not worked on. Why are you guys so fussy? This shop has worked on our 1999 (!!) Honda Civic a few times now, and most recently they did some extensive maintenance to keep the car up and running: new timing belt; fixed multiple leaks; etc. The technician must have the patience of a saint, and he did good work. It drives like a dream now! It wasn't cheap, and it took 4 days for them to get all the parts and get the work done, but that's the trade-off for having a "senior" car. We really appreciate their respect for older cars. Some shops won't even work on a '99. But we plan to drive it as long as we can, and we'll keep going back to Paul 777. I've been a Paul 777 customer for over 5 years. I have always dealt directly with Paul and felt he did a decent job. Today I went to the shop to have the suspension checked on my vehicle as it seems the car is pulling to the right. I arrived first thing, around 8:40 am. This is the first time I had to convey my car troubles to a receptionist rather than directly to a mechanic. It was a lackluster experience. Not only was she condescending and dismissive, she wasn't clear on Paul's policy regarding the cost of diagnostics going towards the final repair. She challenged me saying that was unheard of. After going to check with one of the mechanics, she confirmed that was their practice yet acted as if that was her first time hearing such a thing. The entire interaction was annoying and frustrating. Every time I have had work done on my vehicle, I have spoken directly with the mechanic. Instead I had to listen to an individual condescendingly tell me that it's not unusual for a 10 year old vehicle to not drive straight. Absolutely ridiculous. Still, I left the car based on Paul's good reputation. By 2:30 PM I'd heard nothing from them. I decided to call the shop and follow up. The receptionist told me they were still working on building the estimate but that I could come pick up the car anytime. What kind of sense does that make? I dropped my car off because I need it repaired, not to donate $185 to the shop. I had a bad feeling and decided to go back to the shop and speak with someone face to face. When crossing with one of the Latino mechanics, he turned his head and would not interact with me. It seems they are using her as a shield from their customers. It's bizarre and pathetic. It wasn't a language barrier as I'm Spanish speaking. The receptionist began giving me partial estimates and then reneged on the diagnostic charge applying to the cost of repairs. I ended up taking my car and leaving without a complete estimate. They would supposedly email me one. I have yet to receive any communication from them, and won't be using their services either way. Moreover, I checked the odometer and they hadn't even performed a road test as part of the "diagnostics". It feels like I was just robbed for $185 and wasted an entire day. I've come to Paul's a few times for some oil changes, and various minor mechanical issues, and I've always found them very fair and honest. In one of my more recent visits, I was dealing with some squeaky break issues. They determined that the brake pads were still fine, but there was some rust on the rear brakes causing the squeaking. Instead of charging me a ton of money to replace it, they actually suggested I not replace it, as there was nothing wrong mechanically. And simply offered to oil it up, to help reduce the squeakiness. They are located right off of San Pablo, so sometimes it's a bit hard with all the heavy traffic to pull in and out. Free street parking is available, and they do not take appointments, so it's first come first serve. read more

I thought I would give him a other chance to rectify my situation and called the garage to get his number again. He was there and said bring it in. I did and he took the front door apart. The window had been damaged and the metal cross-mechanism that lifts the window up and down was so bent and damaged it was impossible to believe the mechanic did not hear the metal crunch. The owner ordered a replacement window and parts and replaced and replaced and the driver's side window and ordered the parts for the passenger side window. I came back and he repaired the passenger side door. But it turned out the switch on the driver's side door was damaged as well and I can't open the passenger side window from the driver's side. He refused to replace the switch which was damaged by his shop. I am a dog walker and I have to be able to open that from the driver's side on hot days. I went in for a tune up and had my windows destroyed by this garage. And he acted like he was doing me a favor. Also, I my windows weren't repaired for weeks and some things were stolen from my car including $720 which my clients paid me for boarding their dog and their dog food which I had to replace and a stainless steel insulated water bottle !nd it's case, among other things. I should be made whole. I should not be out of pocket for anything. This has been a nightmare. This is a business that does not take responsibilities for its mistakes. BEWARE. I requested an estimate for a repair and was provided a quick response. The auto shop said to come in at any time, and so I came in the next day. I arrived at 12:00 PM, and a technician said "nobody is here, come back in an hour". I left and returned at 1:05 PM. The same technician said "Nobody is here. I said come back in one hour, you were only gone 45 minutes." If he had told me to they're busy and to come back the next day, no problem. Instead, the tech blamed me for returning early and not following instructions. I left without being serviced. Hopefully their car technical skills are more precise than their time-telling skills. read more

I took the car in to repair a TPMS light (right rear tire). I dropped off the car in the late morning, tried phoning twice to see if it was ready in the afternoon - no one answered. They kept the car overnight. The next day I was able to speak with someone and they said it would be ready by noon, they finished the work around 2pm. The lights were never repaired despite having installed a new sensor. They said it was OME as I told them only that part would work on my Fiat. They said I needed to take it to the dealership and have the wiring inspected because I had rodent damage to the wires. They couldn't point out where, but simply said there was evidence. I paid $272 to have a sensor installed that didn't work. I paid another $210 @ Santa Rosa Chrysler / Fiat dealership only to have them run another diagnostic check and tell me the wires and connections were working, but the part was faulty. After 15 phone calls and no one answering, I got through to explain Fiat dealership found no issue with the wiring. I took the car back to Paul's to inform them and they said if I could find the part, they would install it....? I should call around to the various Fiat (whatever Chrysler) dealerships and locate a TPMS part. The service guy, George? never even bothered to phone Santa Rosa or acted like he didn't know there was a dealership there. Honestly, I don't think they knew what they were doing and in the end when I finally got the sensor(s) repaired, the mechanic found brake fluid leaking on the right rear tire which apparently, doesn't happen unless someone unscrews some bolt. I was told it's not a part that comes loose on its own. Fortunately, I used AMEX to pay for the original repair @ Paul's and had the charge reversed. Not recommended for FIAT repairs. read more

Robert (I think his name was), was really nice and was willing to work with me on the final costs of the repairs since my car unexpectedly stopped working properly. Robert was super laid back, joked with me like he knew me which is always nice in what feels like we live in a social climate where everyone is so sensitive. We'd been having (multiple) issues with our Mazda and originally were looking for the auto care business next door. But when we stopped in, they were closed and Paul's still had someone working on an oil change. So I walked in, described our problem and he offered to run a check. After running the check, he told us it was likely the alternator as the battery wasn't keeping its charge and having the seat warmers on was causing it to have issues starting back up. He let us know to bring it in again and they could do a full check to confirm. Once they were able to confirm it was the alternator, they ordered the part and were able to fix it a few days later. Paul's had great service and we loved that they were so close, as the Mazda dealer the honey has been using is in San Leandro. It was also super sweet of them to run a check and let us know what was going on with the car so we could charge it up on the highway, and we will definitely be using them again once we trade in the car for a newer model. TLDR: They charged me a very expensive inspection/repair and didn't do a thorough job because my car completely broke down the very next day...I highly recommend finding someone else to service your car. When I brought my car into 777 Auto Care, I explained there were 3 issues with the car: 1) upon ignition there was a high pitched squealing, 2) there was a constant lower pitched rumbling/buzzing sound, and 3) the car had been turning over and having trouble starting. I also sent this list to them via Yelp when I scheduled an appointment. They said they would take a look and see what's wrong. Approx 3 hours later, they called me in and told me I needed my oil changed and my axil CV boots replaced. While both of those things were true, they clearly were not the cause of the issues I stated up front. Paul's team insisted it was because of the oil. So I had them do the oil change and then test again. Turns out that didn't solve anything! They took another few hours to check again and this time did a better inspection and determined the alternator was the issue, which makes a lot more sense! This solved the first two issues and sounds. I also thought they had fixed the third issue (the engine struggling to start before ignition). Boy was I wrong. The very next day my car wouldn't start at all! I had to have it towed to a different mechanic who actually did a complete inspection for a 10th of the cost and found that a cell of the battery was faulty and needed to be replaced. So in the end I paid Paul his $250 fee to spend all day doing a "diagnostic" that wouldn't have fixed anything if I hadn't insisted the issue was not due to their initial findings. read more

I paid $150 for a full diagnostic for my 2005 Honda element. I dropped off OWM steering fluid as my steering pump was making strange sounds. I explained this is my camping vehicle for me and my 8yr old son and I'm a single father. The car came back they said with no issues and everything looks great. I asked about the steering fluid pump and they said all was good and didn't need repairs. My oem steering fluid wasn't given back to me. I didn't want to make a big deal about it. So just let the $40 in fluid go. I brought in my work truck also for full inspection for $150 dollars also. They gave me an estimate of $1500 for 3 repairs. I explained I need to use the truck for work and to move my house and will bring back in a month or 2 Brought it back and Paul stated to me he won't work on the transmission and no idea what's going on with my vehicle. I explained I paid almost $300 for two vehicles full diagnostic inspections, and he had to look it up on his computer before he found it and did not apologize but went ahead and excepted my work vehicle that's fine. I understand he's a very busy guy so I went ahead and left my work vehicle for repair I have a GPS tracker on my vehicle in case my vehicle gets stolen and I get alerts on my phone. Paul said that the vehicle will be ready by the next day. The truck was parked on the street. I got alerts on my phone when the vehicle was moved from the street to be brought into the shop to be worked on, a whole day worth of work for $1500 is 10 hours worth of work. I got an alert that the vehicle was being worked on and moved 11 AM the next day and also moved again after they finish the work at 4pm. So from my calculations that's only five hours worth of work yet I was charged $1500 for three repairs and also I paid an additional $160 for an alignment which was not done when it was said it was going to be done as Paul contacted me and said to pick up the vehicle at 5 PM I went to pick up the vehicle at 5 PM and wasn't ready. One of the workers were still doing the alignment and I asked him how long it would take and he gave me a bunch of attitude and said that he doesn't know how long it's gonna take and I explained that Paul told me to pick up the vehicle at 5 PM and alignment has just started and he said come back in an hour. Picked up the vehicle and drove off from the shop and there was grinding noise coming in from the front of my vehicle that doesn't exist. I just spent $2000 at the shop and my vehicle is in worse condition than before I brought it in. Paul called me and explained to me and asked me if there was any weird noise coming from the front of the truck and I said never and he explained to me that your vehicle has almost 400,000 miles. I'm not sure what that means I spent almost $2000 at your business. I had to argue with his employee to fix the issue because I need to go to work the next day and I cannot leave the vehicle for another day. Also, Transmission oil they did not use and they billed me $120 of their transmission oil which is not even better quality than what I brought in After arguing with the manager who was not there and arguing with the Worker they fixed the issue and the sound went away, but I'm not really confident about the repairs that they have done What really bothers me is I'm being deceived on the hourly rate of $150 for how many hours has actually been worked on the vehicle number one. number two if a customer has spent $2000 for repairs it doesn't matter if their vehicle has 400,000 or 5000 miles on it, I expect that the work to be done properly after they did the repair. They didn't even do a test drive to make sure that the vehicle was working properly and I had to argue with their employees to get it fixed the right way and right now I have left with a bad taste in my mouth and I will never bring any more of my work to this business ever again . read more

Paul 777 Auto Care responded with in 5 minutes, with an installation quote along with a time window when I could bring it in. I came in with my truck a half an hour later, they installed the dash cam without any problems. Very neat job, quality work at a great price. The service they provided was great. There's over 50 automotive repair shops on San Pablo Ave from Oakland to Richmond, it is great to finally find one that provides great service, quality work with a reasonable price. Will stick to the facts and be fair. This business seems to be good and make many customers happy. However, this was not my experience. Sent out a request for catalytic converter replacement and possible 02 sensor replacement. Indicated aftermarket cat preferred. This business responded with a quote of $400-$800. Bought the car in. Technician was very nice and thorough. I work on engines and machinery but appreciated the explanations he was providing. The estimate provided later was $2,209.23. I responded that the original quote was much lower and that I preferred an aftermarket catalytic converter. Technician responded that an aftermarket catalytic converter would have a shorter lifespan. Recommends OEM if I planned to keep the car long-term but will provide an adjusted quote for the aftermarket catalytic converter. $1,300 total including parts and labor was quoted. Technician follows up stating that vendor will not sell this catalytic converter without the front manifold. Manifold is on national back order and to check back in 12 months. Stated they are unable to find this particular part (5671404). I offered to source the part if they would still be willing to do the work. Technician agreed. I found and purchased an appropriate brand new replacement part. Brought said part in, expecting to sign some sort of waiver. Technician asked "When would you like to bring your car in?". This is the same person I've been speaking with from the start. I replied, "...you have it. It's right over there.". Technician then took the part over to the what I believe was either the lead mechanic or shop owner. This gentleman takes a look at what's inside the box and says no. He further directs the technician not to charge me, directs me to visit a particular shop to see if they'll do the repair, and proceeds to back my car out of the garage. Rather abrupt dismissal. The shop they referred me to had closed for the day. This forced me to sit in peak traffic for the evening as driving at this hour was never part of the plan. Tried calling the shop they referenced a few times today, no response. Again, it seems that many customers have nice things to say about this shop. I can't say the same. I'm currently trying to find a shop that will perform the repair and accept the replacement part I now own. Until that's taken care of, I'm in the red $552.99 for the part listed on the estimate. The part they claimed they couldn't find and would install if I was able to find one. My time was spent and I'm never getting that back. I sincerely hope that this is an anomaly and the experiences of future customers mirror the majority of positive reviews published for this business. It's rather unfortunate that I seem to be the exception. read more

I had good impression of this shop in the past. But when I went in for an oil change and safety check recently, I was told that the front brakes need replacing because only 10% of the pads were left. Instead of paying close to $500, a relative told me to just get the pads from the dealership and he can replace them for me. So I did and it turned out that my front brake pads still have 60-70% remaining not 10%. My relative asked me which shop I went and told me not to go again. I went back to the shop to let the shop manager aware of the situation. No apology. That's the last straw, I won't trust my car to them. read more

Having gotten fed up with Art's lately, I was looking for a new local mechanic. A friend stopped in here on a Sunday (What? A mechanic open on the weekends?!) and said Paul helped him with a hitch he'd installed incorrectly... FOR FREE!!! This sounded like a dream, so I decided next service I need, I'd try them out. Unfortunately, on the day I had my car serviced Paul was not there; looks like I got the B-squad. Having just purchased four new tires from Costco, I went in for an alignment since Costco doesn't do that. And since they were gonna have it up on the stand and I was due for it, I had them do the transmission fluid as well. Never again. They charged me $75 for transmission fluid! Period. No itemization. No number of quarts and price per, just "Transmission Fluid, qty 1, $75.00" I also don't see any itemization for a new plug gasket so who knows if they replaced it. The labor for the fluid change was $120. So I paid $195 for a transmission fluid change?!? The stealership charges less. You know you're getting screwed when it's cheaper to go the dealer. Now to the meat of my complaint -- the alignment job. They got 3 out of 4 right, but couldn't get the left rear toe within spec without installing some shims. Okay, fair enough, it's pretty close, so why am I complaining? The invoice reads: "Four wheel alignment. Road test. Check suspension and steering parts for wear." They didn't actually inspect parts for wear, or if they did, they're completely incompetent. A strange clunk comes from the front when going over bumps or grade changes. My car rides like a boat. It was shaking all over the place going over a grated bridge to Alameda -- I thought I was going to get pitched into another lane. I bring the car back to the shop to see if they can take a look. This time I meet Paul. He seems knowledgeable and friendly enough. He takes the car around the block. When he gets back, I can instantly tell he sees what I'm talking about. He puts it up on the stand. Rear shocks are leaking oil. This certainly didn't JUST develop, so why the hell did they go ahead with the alignment?! "You need four new shocks. About $1000. Come back tomorrow." No way. You've completely lost my trust. I've done my own suspension before and I'll do it again. read more
