Left NH for Florida at 0500 on a Friday. Had a blowout on I495. AAA towed me to Rays Automotive Service in Lowell Mass. It was about 0720 and Ray was open even though his hours said they opened at 0800. He spent quite a lot of time locating a replacement tire as ours was destroyed. The tire was in Concord and would take about 4 hours to be delivered. He offered his truck so we could have breakfast while we waited. After a while Ray went above and beyond by having his son travel to pick up that tire. In the interim we found Ray to be very personable and friendly. The tire was replaced, others checked and we were finally on our way. We highly recommend Rays as an organization that is honest, thorough, accomodating, friendly and overall very helpful. In October I brought my car for a state inspection. It was agreed that a ball joint would be replaced and the oil changed if the car needed no other work to pass inspection. It was discovered that the frame was rusted so would not pass inspection. They changed the oil anyway and told me it was always done with a state inspection.,I was not told this when I made the appointment. I have never had an oil change done as part of an inspection at any other shop. TV I paid $112.50 in cash to have my car released. I wasn't given a receipt or an inspection report. I was told it would be emailed to me. It never was. I emailed them within a week and asked for my money to be returned. minus the 12.50 for the inspection. They refused to acknowledge my request. Had my car in for an inspection again- had the information requested ON THE DASH... got a call a few hours later that they cannot find the information ON THE DASHBOARD- arrived back at Autoworks to get the information OFF THE DASHBOARD and walked it into the office. We came to Autoworks for the first time to get a check engine light diagnosed. My husband's friend had a computer he connected to the car when the light was showing and he brought the codes in to provide to the technician. We were charged over $200 for diagnostics, and another nearly $300 for the repair which apparently wasn't the correct repair bc when they went in to make it, they found the actual root cause of the problem, a different faulty part and another nearly $300. So total over $800 just like that. We understand the value of honest work and don't begrudge places charging for their time and materials. But nearly $300 for diagnostics on an issue you're going to repair for us anyway? We felt taken advantage of and like our business was not valued by the technician. We won't be coming back. It seems like there are enough similar complaints here that the owner, who in his comments seems sincere, should take the time to understand the root cause of the problem and address it. read more

We've been going to Autoworks since we moved here a little over a year ago. They seemed to be honest and did good work. That is until now. Two months ago we sent our car in for service because of a slow leak in a tire and to have the exhaust fluid filled. It cost $225 for that work. The tire still leaked, which I filled every week since. The exhaust fluid warning came on again last week. I sent it in for the same issues yesterday. When it was ready I went by and was told it would be $350. That's $575 for that simple work. Not to mention two visits. Needless to say I was shocked and said that can't be. I got all the explanations. I was told the fluid is expensive and cost $90 for three gallons (it's $16.99 a gallon at NAPA). Here's the real killer they charged $92.66 to remount the tire. That's on top of the charge from before. I was appalled that they charged this amount and thought their customer was stupid enough to believe this. Yes they reduced the bill by a little, but even then it was a ripoff. I've written reviews prior, some good some not so good of the places I visited. However, this isn't about bad service or bad food this is about being ripped off to the point that it feels like I've been robbed. They should be ashamed read more

Great auto repair shop. I am on a cross country road trip in my 2013 Toyota 4 Runner, pulling my 16 foot Airstream Camper. I stopped to get an oil change half way through the trip. During the oil change they noted that I had some leaking fluid around my transfer case. Not knowing I was getting ready to head out for a 5000 mile trip they said I could get the necessary repairs at my next service appointment. I decided to go back to them to get the more extensive work done and they completed that project in the promised time for less money than they estimated. well...I'm on the fence on this one...some report the front desk man is a double talker...not sure of that but he's a dingbat..maybe on meds.. he's the money man here and he's just the same as you'd find at your local dealership..trained to get the absolute max from every customer every time...he's good at it. I went for my state inspection to see how it would be no interaction with the mechanic I never saw or spoke to. Then after money man asked me about my one hundred mile service ...listed a lotta stuff I didnt need a lot of it but I did want my spark plugs changed and an air filter. I came back the next day to discuss those ....he insisted on the cabin filter I don't care about ..188 bux!.. for two filters that are like forty bux every where..he says things have skyrocketed ..hmmm well how about the spark plugs I need four 299.00 bux! I know spark plugs aren't 75 bux each.. and labor isn't as much as an hour....sounds like dealership stuff to me.. you can get an air filter at Walmart for teelve bux and change it yourself in five mins....at an oil change shop I asked the cabin filter was sixty bux and they'll put it in in ten mins......so... I'm sure they do good work but I believe I'll pass yes yes I know things have gone up I understand but ,,, even if it's five star service ...you're gonna pay too dollar dealership, prices for it so beware their a money making big time operation.. and the man at the front desk is a well trained master at it.. Very courteous, fair price, quick service. Comfortable waiting area. My wife and I were visiting Maine when we started experiencing engine issues our second to last night. Autoworks was able to check out the car right away the next morning, and were very good about explaining what was going on with the car and letting me know the cost before proceeding. I, can't say enough good things about this shop. We were on vacation our SUV just died on Route 1 in Kittery Me. We were towed in by AAA. From the moment I approached the service desk I experienced nothing professionalism from George the service intake person. I, was able to secure a loner car (no charge). I arrived at Kittery Autoworks a new customer, deciding it was finally time to establish a relationship with a mechanic in my home state. Exhaust problems and the need for a state inspection were my symptoms, with my exhaust dropping off before my scheduled visit. I left my car in the lot on Saturday, and although my original appointment was not until the following Wednesday, I received a call on Monday early afternoon with a diagnostic report. The news was unfortunate, a rather large fix for a 12 year old vehicle, and I really had to weigh whether or not the investment made sense, or if I should simply say goodbye to a car I love. Paul at the shop was so incredibly supportive and willing to take the time to help me consider next steps without any pressure to make a quick decision or to utilize his services. Ultimately I chose to begin moving forward, knowing that I was not ready to say goodbye to my beloved wagon. The team set me up with a cute, clean, well running, and zippy little loaner car FOR FREE (simply the cost of gas). Being a consultant and needing a vehicle to get me around throughout my work day, this was an incredible bonus, saving me at least $150 for a rental. When I returned to pick up my vehicle, I found the most pleasant surprise. The team at Autoworks had gone above and beyond to get my vehicle safely back on the road, at practically a third of the price they had originally quoted (saving me at least $1000). It was reported that a magical tech named Don Ruger found a way to utilize his creative and knowledgeable expertise in vehicle repair, and custom created/ordered a part for my vehicle that saved me a significant chunk of cash, while legally and safely keeping my car on the road. I heard rumors of Don going above and beyond a comfortable day at work, welding in significantly challenging places, using tiny mechanic telescoping mirrors as guides to work in the blind spots. Paul also looked outside the box in order to help keep my car running but at a price that worked for me, and a way that satisfied me personally as a customer. All in all, I simply have to say, that I am grateful to have found myself at Autoworks in Kittery, regardless of having to drag my growling hanging exhaust through Portsmouth, in what felt like the drive of shame. It is an incredible relief to have the opportunity to work with a team that is flexible in their thinking, considering approaches that not only save their clients money, but make them feel as though they are truly being treated like family. I felt understood: I have driven used vehicles my entire driving career, and I appreciate a mechanic that can think creatively, and provide options (maybe another client would have preferred a whole new exhaust, but I was absolutely thrilled with a few bits and pieces and parts if it did the trick, and kept me on the road for less). I couldn't be happier with the service I received from Autoworks on my 2004 Subaru Outback. The shop called and offered to walk me through some different scenarios because the job wasn't a simple ball joint replacement like I thought. With my car up on the lift, Don and Paul took me under the car and pointed out the issues. Don described exactly what he was going to try to do, but clearly said he couldn't guarantee he would be successful. Paul, on the other hand, repeatedly told me how good Don was on Subarus. Thankfully - Paul called with great news! Don successfully avoided ALL of the possibly catastrophic outcomes and was able to replace the ball joint without any further complications. My wife and I were in the middle of a long drive, late at night, from PA to Maine to begin our vacation. Just as we hit NH - about 3 am - the right front wheel began making a loud squealing/grinding noise. We knew we were not going to make it to our destination, so frantically we began searching for repair shops that opened first thing in the morning. We came upon Autoworks in Kittery, Maine. It was a combination of a great website and excellent yelp reviews that convinced us to try there first. We literally camped out in their parking lot and met Jeremy as he came into work at 7:15 in the morning. After explaining our predicament, his immediate answer was "Sure! We can help you with that." By 7:30 am they had the truck on a lift and had diagnosed the problem as bad wheel bearings and already had the part in order. Steve the owner, gave us a map of the area and my wife and I took our two dogs for a walk into Kittery for coffee and breakfast. The great crew at Autoworks got to work on the problem. By 9 am our vehicle was not only repaired, but washed with fresh mints on the dash! Our vacation was back on track after a disastrous start. If i could choose zero stars i would. Beware that this is a shop that will take advantage of honest people when they think they can. New to the area and needed a tire change over on my girlfriends car for summer tires. Have had this done many times at $15/tire. Ok, yea, I'd be ok at $20/tire...even $25/tire. Either way, simple task, very straightforward. They call my girlfriend (owner of the car) and try and upsell her tires, yea tires were worn..no big deal...she tell them to hold off until she makes a decision. she calls me and asks what i think and ultimately asked me to call them and tell them what to do. I call, and before i have a chance to ask about the new tires the guy tells me they've already swapped them over and that we can come pick it up and pay the bill of $172.XX. I almost fell out of my chair, and he realized it and magically decided that he could knock $40 of the bill at the blink of an eye. $42.xx/tire are you kidding me!!! then magically down to $33.xx/tire. WHAT A CROCK!! I am not happy but basically said we'd be in to pick it up later. (Thinking we'll never be back) We show up to pick it up...the tires were not changed over, and her summers were locked in the garage overnight. She goes to pick up her summers this morning and we aren't even sure if there the same ones...they were taken out of the bags (apparently) and put in different ones. nothing we can do. She leaves and the service writer says "terrible alignment, cant believe you're driving it"...Are you kidding me! I bet they didn't even drive it! And why wasn't that said on the phone when trying to upsell a set of tires!!?! Ultimately we feel like there was clearly a lack of honesty on there end and they we're trying to take advantage of us. Got two other quotes from nearby competitors. $15/tire & $21/tire. read more

We got a tire punctured by a nail while on vacation. We replaced the tire with the donut spare, and looked for a garage to plug the original. Thankfully we stumbled on Autoworks. Even though they were busy and we were not regular customers they took us right in, patched the tire, and had us on the road in about a half hour. I went in for a simple flat repair. Jeremy said they could do it after lunch. I said ok. I left my car and went to lunch. I return a 2:00 long after lunch. They haven't even touched it. I could understand if it was a major issue but to plug a flat? This place is ridiculous! For a simple plug to take till 5:00 is outrageous! Bad service and Jeremy is a double talker. I am posting this review in order that potential buyers understand that all is not perfect with this company. A few months ago, we purchased a car from them and generally have been satisfied. They did address the problems we initially had with the car. We bought this car to take with us to Florida this winter to help us save money on gas vs my truck which I tow a trailer with. It made it to Florida. Within a day of being here the car died on the hwy. After days at a garage down here and having to have a new/used engine installed at the cost of $2,500.00 we have the car back. What upsets us, is that we requested that Autoworks inspect this car and check all belts before we left on our trip. See photos above, the timing belt blew up and shredded sending a bearing through the housing which was held on by 4 bolts when it should have been held on by 11 bolts. Is that a thorough inspection? The damage from this oversight was extensive causing the repair that we had to make. So again buyer beware and if you haven't, insist on a detailed inspection of the car and perhaps a statement sayin that it was done. read more
