In short: if you are in Palm Springs / the Coachella Valley area and reading this while having just experienced a flood, forget any other "big name" flood response crew. You are not going to find a better team than this. Dan's team is exceptionally skilled, organized, respectful and most importantly FAST- and I wish I'd found them sooner! Full review: When our tenants called about a flood at our rental property in Palm Springs, I panicked and did what I thought was the "safe" move: I hired a big-name local flood response company with decent (but not amazing) reviews. Six days later, the house was somehow still damp. Progress felt slow, and even my insurance adjuster strongly suggested that I do my research when choosing the company to do the repairs once the house was actually dry. I knew I didn't want that first company doing the actual repairs. I turned to Yelp looking for someone who could move fast, work cleanly, and understand the insurance process; someone who could get the job done with attention to detail, given how much attention we'd put into our home initially, but somebody who could work super, super fast. I thought I'd message AVA Flood Restoration and just get a second opinion on how the drying was going. I was on my way out to dinner and Dan (the owner) said he could come over later that night. I was already impressed, but wanted to wait and see what he'd say. Dan came over right at 9pm as promised. He told me that for a house of our size it simply didn't have the right amount of dryers, and that the house should have already been dry given it had been six days. He told me he had a team ready to go that night if needed, but that either way, he could assure me he could work with speed and attention to detail, and had experience with other homes where design was a key element. I slept on it, and the next morning, fired the other company and hired Dan. He took over from the other company right away, brought in about double the number of dryers, and was candid that the prior team had cut corners. That transparency was a huge deal because at that point I just wanted the truth and a clear plan. He handled explaining what had happened to my insurance company so insurance could just pay his team directly rather than me having to act as a middleman. From there, the pace and organization were night and day. Beyond drying, Dan's foreman, Kody, led the rebuild and he's genuinely skilled. New flooring, drywall, electrical and plumbing repairs, cabinets, paint... the whole scope. The crew was also incredibly consistent: they were there every day between 7-8am, and if I had questions they took the time to explain what was happening and why. The #1 reason I'd recommend Dan is communication. I'm a millennial, communication is everything to me. Dan is truly next-level. He responds to everything, is always a phone call away day or night, and he texts frequent updates so you're never left wondering what's going on. A lot of contractors say they communicate well. Dan actually does. Three weeks later, our house was back together and our tenants were back in, honestly better than ever. They made a pretty awful experience as good as it could have been - an enormous thank you to all of you: Dan, Kody, Mike, Derek - while we hope we never have a flood again, if we ever do need a contractor for other work, we absolutely know who to call. By contrast, our neighbors up the street had a similar pipe burst a year prior, and it took them six months to get back to normal dealing with other slower contractors who just didn't prioritize them. I bonded with owner Dan talking about another renovation in my house that was a terrible experience (see my other reviews). Dan's proposal was fair compared to the other GCs that we considered. The timeline was important for us. My other project was quoted at 2-3 weeks, but went on for 4 months. We did full guts on 2 bathrooms, both were finished on time. Any delay was waiting on replacement materials. I do wish I knew more about toilet rough in sizes. At one point we had a fleet of toilets in our entryway. It was all resolved. We were able to return the toilets that were too big. I'd never done a bathroom reno before so toilet rough in sizes was something that never occurred to me to ask about. It's always good to ask lots of questions and ask what are the things you should be aware of. We did a lot of tile work. One set of tile was very unique and had lots of ways to lay it out. The extreme weather rapidly deteriorated the two wood, overhanging shades outside our home the past couple years. We didn't realize how bad until the recent high winds kicked in and we knew something had to be done before a couple other projects could proceed. I was referred to AVA flood restoration and construction by Home Depot's contractor referral program to remodel one of my bathrooms. After the first bathroom, I ended up having them come back to do all the flooring throughout my whole entire home. They moved all of my furniture out did 1600 ft of flooring in four days just as they told me they would do so on time baseboard included put all my furniture back, had house cleaners come clean my house all for a fair price. About a month later I had them come back to do my master bathroom, I could not be more happier with this company and their work. I don't write many reviews, but after many years of hiring contractors for my own home projects and more years before, during and after that as a project engineer and project manager in the power and process industry, part of which was dealing with vendors and subcontractors as well as often being one myself, I feel qualified to comment on AVA Flood Restoration's performance with respect to my recent home atrium renovation. Simply put, AVA did everything I put in my Request for Quotation (RFQ) and more. Dan Hoyer was as responsive as any project manager I've ever worked with. He read the RFQ (a rarity these days), asked questions, LISTENED, had good and practical suggestions and, relative to other quotes for the same RFQ, quoted a price, completion date and terms that were better than others who responded. Given the general quality of vendors these days and my lack of experience with AVA, I was somewhat skeptical that he, or AVA could deliver on what he Quoted back and told me. Well, to my pleasant surprise, AVA could and did (deliver). The work started on time and finished on the quoted and agreed on date. All the terms of the contract were met. A snag with material selection was handled as not much more than a bump in the road. Also, I feel AVA's solution to that situation wound up with a better result. There were several AVA personnel on the job over the 2 week project duration but the two who were on the project every day were Jasper and Carl. My comment about those two (and the rest of the crew for that matter, who also contributed time, comment and labor) is that if I'd had those folks working for me before I retired, my job would have been easier and I'd have slept better at night. They showed up on time every day, worked their butts off, always with courtesy and professionalism, and almost always with good cheer. Also, something I thought unusual: They seemed to answer my questions before I asked them. That developed into confidence on my part that the job would turn out OK - and it did. Overall, AVA and their personnel performed in such a way that I'll ask them to quote my next home improvement project. A 3-4 day job stretched to 11 days with Dan showing up sporadically. He never put in a full days work. When asked about the job, how it was going and what the plans were, he became defensive and argumentative. It ended with Dan walking off a half completed job. He is unreliable and incompetent. .
