My dad is a foodie, so when I wanted to know where I should go to eat on my weekend trip to Athens, he was my go to guy. Without missing a beat he said "Avalanche Pizza! It's world renowned. Literally." Well, as is typical, dad was right. The only mistake I made was assuming the restaurant had a dine-in option. No biggie. I want to start off by saying I love pizza. Even bad pizza is pizza. I had been in town and was looking for something new to try on this trip. The reviews for this place were amazing. We stopped and bought a slice of pizza for $2.00 just so we could finally try it. It didn't look very fresh so I asked the young man behind the counter how old the slice was. He said around 30 minutes. Maybe I was having a bad day or maybe it was bad pizza but I would never go out of my way again for a piece of this pizza. Sorry for the poor review. read more

Just wow! In Athens for a festival and the yelp reviews were great for this place so I picked up my pizza and told the cashier "I'm really excited about this." Ordered the Soilent Pizza (vegetarian) and very green with the spinach, broccoli and pesto (I'm thinking this is a play on the metal band Soilent Green aw yeah)! The feta gave it a nice punch combined with the dense and smooth mozzarella. And the under layer of tomato sauce is what made it complete. IMO, what makes a pizza is the crust and at first I felt the crusty bits left after gobbling that loaded pie slice weren't worth it. But then I ate one and was surprised to find it had a buttery garlic salt flavor even though the crust is more on the doughy side then a hardy crunch. My parents visited Athens a handful of times during my college career at OU. When they visited, all they wanted to eat was Avalanche. They were obsessed. With all the pizza places in Athens, I made Avalanche my special treat. If I had a really good week or did well on an exam, I'd treat myself to The Avalanche Ranch. Friday evening was our first time ordering from here. We like to try new pizza Joints from time to time. Sadly this wasn't a very good choice for us. We ordered a medium sausage and pepperoni & pepperoni & mushroom. On both the sauce wasn't very good. More like it came straight out of a can and very bland. Then on the sausage pizza, the sausage was very dry, hard and not much on the pizza at all. Both were short on pepperoni too. The dough seemed doughy or not completely cooked. Hands down, the worst delivery order experience ever. Salad and bread sticks. Middle of the week. OU on break. I call after 45 min and they say it's on the way. Never showed. I call back, verified they had correct address. They did. It's been hour and half since I ordered so I cancel the order and request a refund. I am refused. I ask to speak with manager. He refuses a refund. I insist. He tells me to perform impossible act on myself. I talk next day with general manager. He says it is too late to give refund! The gluten free pizza here is great. The only concerning issue is that they don't really ensure that it hasn't mixed with the regular dough. My last visit here was quite disappointing. I had called ahead and waiting for about 20 minutes before heading over to pick up my order. After getting there, I waited another 20 minutes in the lobby before the pizza was done. I got the impression that they had completely forgotten the order until I arrived. Who has time for that?! If you eat at Dominoes and/or Pizza Hut you are doing yourself and the town a huge disservice. Avalanche really is great pizza, and it's so important to support local restaurants. Plus, you can just come in and pick up a piece by-the-slice if you don't have concerns about gluten. read more

The hype is real but not really true. It's the town favorite but it's not that great. Go here for novel pizza. They have an award winning "Godzilla" pizza, one named after wolf man, and all of the old music and movies references you could want for names and themes. There have some weird combinations, some of which are the epitome of junk food and are good with beer but too expensive for that purpose to me. Note that while they have gluten free crust, it's pretty well good for a low carb diet or a mild sensitivity only. They make them in the same kitchen, so be warned if this is a concern for you. The pizza crust is too thin for me, and the cheese sometimes has an odd texture. It's usually a little overdone, and the sauce is kind of bland. The toppings are usually pretty good in quality. The pepperoni isn't super greasy. They do sell pizza by the slice, despite being a little far from court street where you would typically expect this. The employees there are fine. The store has a sense of humor with it's signs but sometimes they border inappropriate, making light of political situations or social issues (usually it's a harmless joke though). If you live in Athens it's probably worth a try eventually. Just passing through? You have better options, even if you want to cash out on the "local" eateries. read more

Terrible service and the food is worse. We moved a daughter into OU as she is in the grad program and they had good reviews so we stopped in. The gentleman behind the counter was surly and curt. We were starving so we opted to grab a couple of slices of pizza to go. The pizza was terrible. It tasted like cardboard and it hurt my teeth to rip it off the slice with each bite. Bad food. I go hard for pizza. i will go anywhere that has great pizza. Sadly I was super let down by this place. I ordered with Greek with Chicken and it was GREAT. My husband got a NY Style pepperoni that smelled and tasted like rubber. IDK if it was the cheese or what, but it was disgusting. I spit it out. We also got bone-in wings which were barely edible. Another 'award winning' mediocre pizza: definitely don't add fresh basil because they will actually cook it, expect a different cut pattern every time, pies will never be ready when they say, and the online system is down fairly frequently. Also, the New York style, which is a marked improvement over regular, aren't even available to order online. Ordered a small pepperoni and onion pizza well done two nights ago. The kid took my money as soon as I walked in and told me it would probably be a few minutes and walked away. Five or so minutes later someone comes from the back with several boxes of pizza. I stand there wondering if one of them is mine as no one is at the counter. I approach the counter study the boxes and locate my pizza. I had to call the kid back to the counter and tell him that my pizza was ready. That I could've dealt with but I was staying at a local hotel and once I got back to my room and opened the pizza I discovered the slices were not cut all the way through and I had nothing to cut it with. I found the crust a bit tough. The toppings were Kind of a greasy mess. I have tried Avalanche many times and really wish I liked it more. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. read more

We stopped by here while traveling back home from the south. The Pizza was fantastic! Fresh ingredients and piping hot. We ordered a chicken, bacon, pineapple pizza and a Calzone with sausage and pepperoni. The pizza was a wonderful thin crust pizza with juicy rotisserie chicken that was well seasoned and the bacon was nice a crisp. My daughter got the calzone and absolutely loved it. Said the crust was thin enough that everything inside was cooked and tasty. This will be a definite stop for us the next time we are driving through. read more

Can't really speak to the quality of the by-the-slice items, but their whole pizzas are incredible and I've never seen so many choices for toppings. Best tomatoes I've ever had on a pizza, by far. It's a walk-in/walk-out sort of place and pretty casual, so don't expect Waldorf Astoria-style waiters or something. But who wants that in a pizza joint? One of my favorite pizza places in the entire world. That's right, the world. When I was a student at OU, I was an Avalanche frequent and no matter where I go, I don't find a place quite like Avalanche. Their BBQ Chicken is still the best I've ever had. The rest of it is pretty good, too! If you're looking for unique specialty pies, this is your place. You won't find some of these offerings anywhere else. And if you want a more standard pizza, this is still the best you can find in Athens County. The crust thickness is satisfying without being too much. I like to get extra sauce and the dough holds it well. The 3-for-1 deal is as good as you'll find anywhere. They're open until 4 on weekends! I ordered pizza from here last night as work brought me to town. I ordered 3 pizzas. Between my co-workers. I only had one but all 3 looked really good. I did the Hawaiian, it was really good. One of the better pizzas I've had I a while. Very pleased. I think I'll be staying in and just reheating pizza for dinner tonight instead of fussing with going out on a Saturday night to try to eat. "The best pizza in the world?" No. That being said, it's very good, but not the best I've tasted (try Providence Coal-fired Pizza in Rhode Island). Meh.......but I'm from Chicago so it would take a lot to impress me. This pizza is Little Caesar's-esque with a definite upgrade in the sauce. I think the main draw here is the kitschy-gimmicky trend now of weird combos atop your pie. Peanut butter and jelly, french fries, cabbage......I'm sure motor oil and engine de-greaser aren't far behind for NASCAR fans. This place has over 50 different specialty combos. Absolutely hands down the best pizza I've ever had. They nail it at every step of the way, flavorful crust, sauce, and toppings. It's fresh and you can tell. If you want a standard pie, you'll love it, but the real draw here is the specialty items. The general tso's pizza with chicken, cashews, mandarin oranges, and teriyaki sauce will blow your mind. This is but just one of the amazing and unique pizzas that Avalanche has to offer.
