Brier Hill Pizza is apparently Youngstown's claim to fame, and now that I've had it, I totally get it. The pizza here is fantastic, and I would definitely try the brier hill if I were you, but the buffalo chicken and taste of Italy were also delicious! The restaurant is tucked into a very old/historic building. It gives a lot of character. The service was spot on and had very good prices on beer, wine and food. We had to try pizza which was good. Have heard great things about the pizza here so thought we would stop in. The service was quick and friendly. Table says order by phone but bar tender came by and offered to take our order. The pizza was very good and will get again. Meatball bowl with Cavatelli left something to be desired. The sauce was sweet and watery. Pasta was cooked well. Didn't care for the meatballs. Have eaten Avalon Gardens pizza back in the 70/80's. Ordered a Old style pizza and a regular pizza with mozzarella cheese and pepperoni. The pizzas were good, dough and cheese was good. The sauce is off. Something in the sauce isn't good. You don't need to listen to me but I have been around and owned a pizza shop years ago. This is the worst pizza in youngstown. I won't say this is the worst i've ever had, but i can't say i remember a slice worst than this. The dough is way too chewy. The sauce tastes like it's from the can. For the price point i'd hope you'd make your own sauce, and if you are making your own it sucks. Do better. The cheese is the wrong type of cheese for pizza. The crust was alright. Crust was 6.5/10. Finally pizza should be dough, sauce, cheese, and then toppings. Not dough, sauce, toppings, then cheese. My god this dough was thicker than a brick. We went to our granddaughter's dance competition in April 2024 at the DeYor Performing Arts Center and had dinner at Avalon afterward. There was a line out the door to be seated on a Saturday night, but the customers waiting in line were friendly and assured us that the line moves fast - this restaurant obviously has a regular following. We sat at the bar and again sat among regulars. I had a Cabernet, and Ray had a beer. Heaven! I can't believe the menu here!!! It reminded me of my ex's Italian family recipes. I had the fried smelts and Brier Hill Pizza (just like my ex-grandmother in-law's homemade)! My husband had wedding soup - with homemade soup breads - another Youngstown staple! I make soup breads at home, but I have never had them at a restaurant. Impressive and delicious! My husband had a meat pizza and loved it. We ordered a potato pizza and cannoli to go. We drove an hour to eat an early dinner here and attend an event nearby. paid for parking and went inside where a sign said please seat yourself. We found an open table, among a few others, and began to browse the menu from the QR code offered at the table. It was about 15 minutes before a waitress offered to get us menus, So we closed the online order. It was another 5 minutes when she returned to our table and said it was reserved for another party and we needed to leave. It was going to be 45 minutes until she could get us a table and by that time we would have been late for our event. I have eaten here once before and the food was great so I've wanted to take my husband. Sadly because of poor service we will not be back. we wasted 5 dollars on parking for nothing, ended up grabbing a bite at a fast food nearby. And had there not been a sign saying please seat yourself maybe this wouldn't be such a big deal but it was a humiliating experience. I wonder if we would have went through with online ordering at the table what would have happened? So unprofessional! I love grabbing a pizza here from time to time because they are one of the rare establishments that offer VEGAN CHEESE!! Oh how I wish more pizza places had it, but Avalon does! This place is located in downtown Youngstown and we've been coming here off and on over the past few years and it never disappoints. On this particular visit, we were here for my son's 21st birthday celebration. From my wife's first phone call to them a few weeks in advance to paying our bill on the night of, the experience was fantastic. They allowed us to make a reservation for fifty people at 6PM on a Saturday. This is even considering that Youngstown State University football had a home game and this establishment is a favorite for many to visit after the game. No charge or anything like renting a hall, just allowed us to make a reservation. On the Monday before our reservation, my wife called our order in of 7-pizzas and several sides/appetizers. We arrive at approx. 5:30 on the evening of and we immediately notice that several tables have reserved signs attached with our name on them. We are greeted by two young men who took care of us the entire evening. One's name was Vince (my son knew him) and the other was I believe KaShawn or something close to that. I should have written his name down for this review. These two young men took care of us from start to finish. The food was brought out hot and on time. As soon as my glass was empty, a new beer was poured and brought to me. They checked on us regularly and were more than accommodating. Kudos to such great service and they did it with a smile. Now to the food. The pizzas we chose were the Traditional (Tomato sauce & blended Mozzarella & Provolone), Traditional with pepperoni, Brier Hill (Tomato sauce, sweet peppers, imported Romano ), Taste of Italy (Tomato sauce, capicola, Genoa salami, Margherita pepperoni, blended Mozzarella & Provolone), Mad Greek (Sautéed spinach, fresh garlic, Kalamata olives & Feta), White (Oil, sea salt, black pepper, parsley, imported Romano, blended Mozzarella & Provolone ) and the Buffalo Chicken (Baked chicken breast, buffalo sauce, blended Mozzarella & Provolone). The sides/apps consisted of their homemade peppers in oil, butterflied smelts and Italian fries ( Fried Avalon dough topped with marinara sauce and imported Romano). Everything as fantastic. I must mention that they have a tad bit sweeter sauce then I prefer but the crust and toppings make up for my pickiness. The Italian fries and the peppers in oil were equally delicious but the smelts were just OK. Too much breading to where you couldn't really taste that delectable little Smelt. Let me start with. Not a fan of deep dish type pizza. Found this place while in town for work. Walking distance from the double tree so big win there. First night I went I ordered the 8" pizza. Pizza good but not my thing. It's a deep dish style I think. Lots of crust but not bad flavor. Sat at bar. Staff seems to know everyone but it is a small town so not surprised. Got the meatballs to go for a snack in the room. That's what kept it a 5. Meatballs awesome. Second time I went got the pasta with meatballs. The fact that it comes out in a plastic dish that looks like it came from a prepackaged meal was a tad disappointing but again...'meatballs for the win. Pasta was ok. I don't think sauce is house made. Not much flavor. Overall decent food but great atmosphere. Staff super friendly and everyone is helping everyone. Will stop by again when/if in town. read more

I loved the environment of this Youngstown staple; however, the experience was dampened by the fact that all the food was served on paper plates and takeout containers..and the silverware was plastic wrapped in plastic. Normally I would say that is not a big deal, but when you are charging an average $12-15 per plate, that price is not valid for the dining experience. The service was good. The food was subpar. Also, Avalon should consider adding French fries to their menu. Dining isn't what it used to be post-COVID but dining here felt like takeout was their priority and they were just trying to accommodate dining-in customers. read more

My husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary last week! We spoke to the owner about having a party there to celebrate and she went above and beyond to make it a very special night for us! The pizza was excellent and we had ordered chicken fingers for the kids and the adults loved it so much we had to keep ordering more! The bar service was outstanding as well! Not only did we have over 30 people show up for our party the restaurant was packed because the YSU game had just ended!
