My daughter is going to school here and loves it. Unfortunately, they have to do online learning on some nights, but the school gave the students laptops. I've had her do my hair a few times at the school. The teachers come around and check on the students often. I'd recommend Avalon for going to school or getting your hair done at a low cost. Do NOT recommend this school. They are very unprofessional and have very rude staff. A few good instructors who get gossiped about from unprofessional and rude staff in front of students. Hours are not logged properly and graduation dates keep getting switched daily. Tests are lost on a regular basis causing many students to have to retake tests sometimes up to three times over again. Curriculum is repetitive to buy time on earning the hours required. Constantly out of supplies, which should be covered from students tuition. read more

Don't go to school here. They dont invest in their school, resulting in students getting injured. I was in Class on Saturday laying on a massage bed and it was not put together properly. The beds have two screws per leg to adjust the height and one of the legs only had one screw. When I was on the bed it came undone resulting in me falling on the ground. Luckily I caught myself with my arm but it could have ended way worse. No instructor was present to help. I went to the office for help and yet no one to be found. I walked all over campus just to find an instructor, this is not ok. I am severely bruised and all the leadership did was hand me an incident form to protect themselves. What am I paying $12,000 for? We never have an instructor present and we are given unsafe equipment to work with. This school doesn't care about their students safety. Just take a look around, you'll notice every stool has broken wheels. Also, it's so unsanitary. We are told to clean at the end of the day with just water. Imagine moping your floor with just sink water, how disgusting. It might be cheaper but im telling you its not worth it, go somewhere else. read more

I got the worst perm I've ever had in my entire life. I didn't think you could go as bad as it did! I brought my own perm solution they refuse to use it. They told me they have the same perm solution on hand, after it was wrapped she came out and told me they didn't have that perm solution, after all. I should have got up and left because the honesty was right out the door. The second thing is they didn't have enough perm rods in the size I wanted. It is just a big mess I called and told the director about my experience and he never invited me back the customer service at this place is just absolutely horrendous I would not go back and I do not recommend. I decided to branch out and find less expensive versions of the little luxuries that are out of my reach right now. One of those is the joy of regular appointments at the hair salon. I don't mean for a cut ​or color...One day I decided to go to one of the local places that specialize​​s in shampoo, conditioning, ​ and the perfect blowout. After my first appointment, I realized why my mother and all the women in her generation went to the salon once every week to have their hair done. It wasn't because the set was so hard to do, or because the dryers were better. it was because they felt pampered and beautiful after someone else fussed over their hair for a bit. They charge $45 -$65 for their blowouts. Price could be reduced by purchasing a monthly allotment, but the cost was still quite high. I was reading an article about how to find bargains. Services from cosmetology schools looked like a winner, so I looked around for the school closest to my house. Avalon is convenient, so I stopped by to check them out. The prices looked great! A blowout was $10, a cut with shampoo and blowdry is also $10. Services run from $3 up to over $50 for different color applications. They also have a complete menu of esthetician services like facials, peels and hair removal. I had a trim and a blowdry. My student cosmetologist was terrific​. I've been there at least 25 times now and only once was I less than thrilled. Even the time I wasn't so happy, it was still no big deal. It's a lot easier to get over a $10 bad blowout than one for $60. I've been happy with having my hair cut at least 4 times, hair color​ at least 6 times, and deep conditioning treatments every few weeks. This place is terrific​​. read more

My friend and I came here to get mani/pedis for fun, not expecting anything fantastic- again, just for fun. We were there for over 2 hours and the students we got were super friendly and great to talk to, but I walked out with my fingers looking like a bubbly uneven MESS, and my friends' looked arguably worse. Not a single instructor came over to check on the their work the entire 2+ hours. Still didn't comment on it because we thought the teachers might check it out at the end? ...Nope. Not sure how the students are supposed to improve in the nail department if their work is never looked at or critiqued??? Even scarier than my nails' appearance: my girl was about to graduate in a couple weeks. This was her first time doing nails. I know it's cheaper than a real salon and it's a learning experience for students, but you still pay! Expected some instructor feedback, and obviously a bit better of a turnout. DONT DO IT!!!!! I WOULD GIVE 1 STAR IF I COULD. Be VERY cautious if you decide to participate in a hair show there. The girl that did my hair messed it up so badly that I had to cut off about 9inches. She put glitter, paint, hairspray, and then back-combed my hair and by the end of it my hair was in these disgusting dreadlocks that were held together by paint. Terrible customer service as well. The school was so unwilling to help me fix my hair after the student had ruined it and I was shocked at how unprofessional they were. They were incredibly insistent about making the girl that ruined my hair try and fix my hair! And I did NOT want her to touch my hair again after how badly she messed it up the first time. The staff here is extremely immature and horrible to students. I've never heard a student that doesn't have something bad to say about being there. They're unorganized, argumentative, and they never listen to what the students have to say. As far as I know, the dean that was there when I was there has since left which Im very thankful for. But the rest of the staff there wasn't any better (Except Ms. Lori, she's amazing!). I came here on a Wednesday morning after getting scheduled with a student named Madi there. I was told by Madi she wouldn't be able to do my hair that day because she was out, Which I was okay with. I ended up getting scheduled with a student named Jordan. She was kind and had a good time with her. Unfortunately leaving the hair school I was very disappointed with my hair. The teacher that Jordan was working with was Diane or Diana. Kind lady but I don't think these females interpreted correctly what I wanted done with my hair. I had black hair which I ONLY wanted lighter and maybe a dark brown color instead of the black.They instead of communicating with me properly ended up doing partial highlights which they spent 6 hours doing which did ABSOLUTELY nothing to my hair did not do a thing to my hair except these horrible murky brown lines in my hair. And I feel they knew I was upset with my hair because they kept insisting I can come in in a couple of weeks and lighten it. I ended up paying only $20 because they barely did anything to my hair and I think Diane knew I was not satisfied with my service at all. I was very disappointed because I went to a previous Avalon school and they always got my hair to what I wanted it to be. I don't recommend this place for anyone of ethnic color skin, as I feel they were intimidated working with my hair type and color which should not be a problem at all! Considering the students should be working with everyone's hair types. I won't be returning to this location at all and will just do my hair to my own liking! My husband and I met in cosmetology school in San Francisco over 30 years ago and I have been patronizing them ever since. I was delighted when Avalon opened near my home as I had been going to schools 20 miles away. Schools offer excellent products and supervision. Since I can no longer do my own roots and cuts I go to the schools. I have experienced terrific new stylists and made new friends to boot. Wherever you go there is the possibility that you may not have the results you were hoping for but if you are apprehensive speak with the instructor. There has been a bump or two.along the way but they have always been handled with courtesy and respect. I was getting my haircut the other day and I was chatting with some of the students and how they were uncomfortable that this one male customer had come in for a haircut. Turns out this customer had inappropriately touched a student and the school did nothing about it. They told me that Courtney who apparently is in charge said that he was allowed in and that they needed to leave that in the past. I find it terrible that these grown adults don't even care for the safety of their students and they are just trying to make a quick buck. I will not be returning and I hope the students feel safer but that doesn't seem like it will happen. read more

My friend and I went here for the first time after it was recommended to us. We knew we were taking a risk by having students handle our hair, but we decided the instructors would intervene if anything started to get messed up. Our appointment was at 10am and after assessing that my stylist would probably take a while to do my hair I let her know that I had an important meeting I'd take over the phone at 2pm (meaning I'd have to leave BEFORE 2). She got another student to help her and promised I would be done in time and I thought that was definitely possible if she just worked a little faster, however, after the other student had to leave my stylist slowed down again. Ultimately, it was 1:10 and my bleach had 15 more minutes to process. I had to leave and could not cancel my other plans so I asked my stylist to come back and wash out my hair as it was. All of the teachers and some students stood in a huddle and gossiped about me and my situation and then proceeded to go to my friend who was getting her hair done and complain about me to her. It was an extremely uncomfortable situation and I was being blamed for not coming earlier in the day since I knew I had other plans. I didn't think that 10am wasn't early enough to do highlights and a hair cut, but it took 3 hours and I was no where near done. One of the instructors tried to help me by offering that I take my call in a quiet room, however I explained to her that that would not work. I was washed out and was offered a free fix up in a WEEK, but I decided I didn't want to go back there again. I had to pay $50 for the "highlights" and left with my hair soaking and a whole salon rolling their eyes at me. When I got home, my hair looked like this. Obviously no extra time that I could have spent there could have repaired the extreme streaking and bleeding. My friend, who didn't have to rush out like me, spent 5 hours there getting highlights as well and was not able to get a hair cut because she was told it would take an extra 45 minutes. I do not recommend this school, you get what you pay for, unless you are like me and you pay $50 to have to go to another salon to get it fixed. read more

This is so saddening that this school is far from what I thought. We barely get taught and half the time in class there is not a instructor because they have lots of students (right next door) they have two teachers and we have one(good one) who is back and forth between our class and the cosmetology side. We are basically teaching ourselves at this point and it is not okay. the older class doesn't get properly cared for or taught. I wish I never came here. It's extremely disheartening and extremely unfair to us students. We are paying thousands of dollars to teach ourselves. I wish I did more research before attending. read more

This review is for my pedicure service only. Well... I first want to premise that I 100% knew what I was getting into, having a student do my pedi. I have been a trainer in the corporate world for most of my career, so I am always willing to avail of services that will help learners grow. I have had my brows waxed and hair cut by newbies multiple times, and appreciate/expect when the mentor would be there to guide them. This was not the case for my pedicure. Plastic bags were used to line the basins instead of proper liners, there weren't enough towels, and the equipment itself didn't look the most hygienic. But what bothered me the most is the incredible lack of basic technique that my technician displayed. Such as not rinsing my feet before wiping them down, leaving scrub product residue on my skin, filing down the top of my nails because the acetone was not left to soak, using dull utensils causing me to offer my own clipper that I carry in my bag, a poor shaping and polish job, and even more things that just left me incredibly disappointed. But I don't blame the student. Though it seemed like she has never even experienced a pedicure for herself, she was personable, kind, and fun to talk to. I blame the training, or lack thereof. One of the mentors even saw what the tech was doing was wrong, but only stayed a minute to tell her how to properly soak my nails, then quickly left her to her devices. My friend was with me, getting a pedicure by someone else, who obviously knew what she was doing. So, why is this institute letting this happen? Whether it be in a learning lab or performing in the workplace, you are only as strong as your weakest link. Cliché, but true. This one service showed me their poor curriculum and teaching methods. Their training needs a revamp. My suggestion, when it's time to train them on nail care, take them to a professional nail salon and treat it like a class. It will be a treat for the students to get pedicures, but they should be instructed to have a pen and notebook to take notes. Record the session if they want. But breaking down the techniques after the experience. Ugh... There's so much more I could go on about curriculum building and training techniques, but you'd have to hire me as an adviser. read more
