Most rude encounter I've had with a nail shop ever. Walked in, 45 minutes after opening. Asked to get my nails fixed(I was PAINFULLY obviously missing a nail). I was looked at crazy like what said had never been heard before, then told they don't have the color I had on. I said I wanted a new color and then was told "We don't have time for that. Thank you." I was really excited to give this place a good review, but I just can't. I came here today because my favorite nail place is closed on Sundays and I decided on Avalon because of all the great reviews and Houston's best nail salon awards. I received a mani-pedi and my eyebrows waxed. The owner did a great job on my eyebrows, no complaints there. She then started my manicure, I was shocked when she was pushing back my cuticles with her own nails!! I have NEVER seen that before..gross. She also pulled a lot off my cuticles and some of them bled (see picture). She then left after doing one hand and had someone else come take over. She went to start on two clients who obviously were regulars. Someone else started my pedicure, no exfoliation, never used anything to scrub the bottom of my feet for calluses, a short massage, and then when it came time to paint my toes she left to attend to the regulars. So I'm sitting there with my fingers painted and not my toes. She later comes back about five minutes with the same gloves on she was using for the other client, paints my toes, then goes back to the other woman with the same gloves..yuck. My whole experience took about 35-40 minutes. My nails don't even look good. I felt they were rushed and careless. One star goes to the eyebrow job, and the technicians were nice. I wish I would've waited until Monday to go to my regular place. I know for sure that I won't be coming back here! read more

Tried this place on a whim because all the "bougie" nail salons were booked for the evening. Called ahead and they promptly answered the phone and welcomed me to come in as soon as i was ready (i live down the street) Jennifer was the wonderful lady who i received a beautiful and relaxing pedicure from. Another lady offered to rub my neck and shoulders during my pedicure and it was an amazing massage. Ive literally been to places that drop rose petals all over you and put sparkles in the water. I've found a nail salon that clean, friendly, professional and fair in price. Oh, and they don't polish your nails sloppily. I always avoided Avalon because I assumed it was ridiculously expensive since it's located in River Oaks. But mani-pedis cost about $35, and the leg, hand and arm massage is faboosh. I almost fell asleep in the chair - and that's no exaggeration. They also do Shellac/no-chip polish, but they only have a super small collection of colors. So this time I just got the standard holiday OPI color: red Note that they insist that you tip via cash. The women who took my card was perturbed that she had to run another transaction for the tip. I am in love with this place! I did frequent a nearby nail salon for regular manis/pedis, but they let me down one too many times, and I wanted to make a change. I called the day before and made an appointment at Avalon based on yelp and citysearch reviews. I was thoroughly impressed. I went here for my NYE mani and pedi and decided to splurge for their deluxe spa treatment. This was worth it! Tons of massage and exfoliation! I have been frequenting Avalon Nail Salon for several years, but I never will again. I stopped in more than 3 hours before their closing for a mani/pedi and was told they "don't have time for that" and they walked away. I would have completely understood if they were booked up, etc., but I wasn't even offered an opportunity to make an appointment for another day. I was left feeling humiliated. I immediately drove to West Gray Nails and Spa, and they were able to give me a lovely mani/pedi while being very friendly and polite. And their staff wears masks. Have been going here since May. At first Tina did my dip powder nails excellently. In late august the quality of the manicure began declining drastically. Again, they began taking advantage of my falling asleep during service. I always tip generously. I feel $10. & &15. is generous for a manicure even after receiving poor services. Yesterday evening the owner called me and asked if I would like to come in this morning as I had tried to make an appointment for today on Saturday. I agreed to come in at 10:00 a.m. I arrived at 9:45 a.m. There were already three customers whom had also just arrived. The look on the owners face was that of surprise. She immediately began trying to ask what was I doing there so early. I reminded her of her call the night before and she blatantly denied calling me. Since I just purchased a new home I'll be needing a new technician anyway so it's no big deal but deal but the HUGE LIE!! Pathetic!! Would have been so much nicer to just admit to her error, apologize, perhaps offer a discount on todays service if I cared to wait, but NO! Best nail salon in Houston. Ok, I know this a bold statement but I'll explain... I have had horrible experiences with nail salons, hearing women scream about the nail tech jabbing their poor delicate foot with a cuticle tool then bleeding. How awful is that? (Leon nails on Richmond) Some places don't even clean their tools which allows fungus to spread, gross. Did you know that if you get fungus on your toenail you have to take this medication for 2 months? Not to mention that you won't be able to drink alcohol (not that everyone needs to, hehe). I know I'm scaring you but that's terrible... all because you paid for your nails to be pretty and you received something much worse. Also, the ladies talk about you in front of your face, rude. With that being said, Avalon is incredibly clean and they don't talk about you! I believe the spa mani pedi is $27. My family and I have been going here for a few years now. Thuy, the owner is so sweet and her staff is great too. The mani and pedi is very relaxing and they do your nails perfectly. After they cut and file your nails, they push back your cuticles and give you an oh so relaxing massage. After about 3 or 4 minutes they put steaming hot towels over your arms and legs to take off the remaining lotion. If that's not a treat to yourself then I don't know what is. read more

Finally -- a place that isn't afraid to apply a LOT of pressure when giving the feet a good rub-down as part of the pedi-process. I must have driven by this place a million times before finally pulling in this weekend to do a walk-in pedi. I admit, when I first walked in and saw how crammed the front room was, I thought this was going to be a bad experience...I was pleasantly proved wrong. It was a quiet, relaxing experience and I was very pleased with the value and quality. I had a very hard time understanding my nail tech when she asked me several times what kind of pedi I wanted. I felt bad, but I finally had to ask the tech sitting next to her. Overall, a great experience and I will come back to try a shellac mani sometime! read more

Did we go to the same place? Got a suggestion to come here for a shellac mani after my usual spot was closed for renovations. Yes, parking was bad. I almost hit their fence trying to back up and pulling out was a scary experience. I didn't feel Avalon was clean at all. The only place to put my [nice] purse was a dusty side table. Not happy about that. I felt bad for the woman getting a pedi across from me - her towel was discolored and stained, and the nail tech put her (also discolored) tools on a small rag on the floor. I don't mind a little dirt and grime for a good mani, but this was the sloppiest shellac I've ever gotten. Never seen so much paint-brush-soaked-with-nail-polish-remover action. The edges are uneven, and the color doesn't go all the way to the edge of my nail. She also put a TON of color on, and it's very bulbous. I'm looking at it now and very unhappy. Upon leaving, almost considered going somewhere else to have it fixed because I have a huge client meeting tomorrow. Will not come back and will stick to my faves - River Oaks Nails next to CVS on Westheimer, and Instyle on Richmond @ Weslayan. Clean little nail salon located on "The Curve". Parking is limited, and getting out of there can be a challenge. What I LOVE about this place is how all the nail polish is organized by color group and each bottle is numbered to ensure accurate placement. Saves me the time of trying to group all the reds together and finding the perfect one for my toes. I went in for the standard mani/pedi. They did a great job, and I definitely felt pampered. However, after my mani/pedi I was set up with a fan to dry my nails. After what seemed like I second, I was being rushed out the door. "But...I don't think they're dry!" I exclaimed, but she assured me they were. I paid and made a swift exit. Sure enough, by the time I reached home my polish was dented. That was annoying! Took my 80 year old mother here for a dip powder manicure and a pedicure for me myself. Both services were impeccable! We couldn't be happier. My mom is on a walker and they were very accommodating and handicap accessible. Her manicurist was Mary- a rare gem that lights up a room and super talented! As Danielle S. stated in her review, the parking situation is pretty bad for this salon. However, this is one of the best mani/pedis I've had done in this price range ($37) so I am a repeat customer. Other things that keep me coming back: - THEY ARE OPEN ON SUNDAYS. That's something that is rare in most nail salons I will frequent. My Saturdays can get so busy that I can't squeeze in time for a mani/pedi appointment. Since I've discovered this place, I'll just do a walk-in on Sunday mornings. Sometimes I do call in a few hours and make sure there is availability. - THEY DON'T USE UV RAY NAIL DRYERS. This actually is a HUGE deal to me, as I'm not a fan of premature aging and skin cancer doesn't sound fun to me. (Note: If you do ask for the shellac mani and/or pedi, you will have to use the UV ray nail dryers.) They use some type of quick-drying top coat and have you sit in front of a fan for a few minutes. It really takes a minute or two and I leave with my nails 100% dry and completely smooth. The polish stays on for about 7-9 days. - THEY PROVIDE A RELAXING ENVIRONMENT. Sure they play cheesy music (think Carly Simon and Christopher Cross) but it's played softly and you won't experience women yelling (ie gossiping) at each other in Vietnamese across the salon. I've come close to passing out a few times while sitting back in their comfy massage chairs. They're very strict on their cash only policy for tips so do make sure you bring plenty of small bills to tip them - they deserve it for the good work they do! read more

She asked them to re-do a couple of botched fingers. My 2nd layer is minimal, so each nail varies in saturation.
