I have been bleaching and coloring my own hair for YEARS. I know the damage it does. I know my hair is dry and frizzy and has split ends. That's why I decided to go get a drastic hair cut. I went in with a reference photo in hand, ready for my transformation. Upon entering, there were three people in chairs at various stages of the hair transformation process. Yet only one person actually doing hair. I found this strange that a stylist would spread themself so thin, but I trusted that they were the professional and knew what they could handle. I waited about twenty minutes for a chair to open up (not bad at all). When I sat down, I showed the stylist my reference photo and told her exactly what I wanted. While she was talking to me about it, she kept throwing in little quips about my hair. "It's too dry" "your hair is very damaged" "there's too much going on" etc. I'm used to these kinds of comments, so I kept to myself and didn't say anything about it. When she cut my hair to my shoulders, she asked if I liked the length. I personally thought it could've been cut SLIGHTLY shorter (.5 inch), but I asked my mom for her input. While my mom was talking, the stylist cut her off to give her own input. Mind you, she did this several times throughout the whole endeavor. To me as well. My mom agreed that it could be slightly shorter, but not too much. So the stylist began cutting again. All the while, saying how it wouldn't make that much of a difference and that it should be shorter. (While she was cutting my hair, she was talking about clients that come in with a reference photo, yet they want something slightly different. She said to me, "if you don't want what's in the picture, show me a picture of exactly what you want!" In hindsight, I find this statement very funny and ironic because I did, in fact, come in with a picture of exactly what I wanted and I still didn't get it.) After she trimmed my hair a bit more, she asked if I was happy with the length. My mom and I both agreed that it was good. So the stylist began layering. As she did my layers, I noticed that she was going around the bottom of my hair, taking more length off. I didn't say anything because she kept insisting "I'm not taking length, I'm making layers, okay?" I trusted the process. I trusted her experience. I trusted her. While she was cutting my hair, she also repeatedly stepped away to wash/tone/condition another clients hair, and went over color options and trimmed ANOTHER clients hair. This haircut took almost an hour. By the time she was finished cutting, I was done. My hair was too short and it looked awful. I was visibly upset and she insisted that she style my hair because she wants everyone leaving her salon "feeling beautiful". I didn't want to stay, but I don't do well under pressure and stayed anyways. I thought a cute style might make me like it better. So I let her style it, but as she was styling, she continued cutting??? Taking a chunk of hair here and there.... It was terrifying for me. It was already shorter than I requested and she was taking MORE? By the time it was all over and done with, my hair was about an inch to an inch and a half shorter than I wanted. It's exactly the hairstyle I DIDNT want. Moral of the story: don't go to Avanti Salon if you have your heart set on a specific style. Because the owner will look at what you want, insult you, do the opposite of what you ask for, and forcibly hug you on your way out the door. read more

I've been debating on writing this yelp review... only because I have gone to this salon for almost four years now and thought the stylist was not only my hair stylist but my friend... but friends don't damage, over process and break someone's hair for almost four years. Therefore I think everyone one here should know to stay clear of Sheena's works. I've been going to Sheena for almost four years now and my hair has not got any longer or healthier In the four years I've been going to her. I naturally have dark brown hair and she would always get my hair that beautiful ash blonde. That's why I loved her work. During my years I told sheena I wanted healthy hair, I wanted to stop wearing extensions and I want soft, beautiful hair. We've cut my hair into a bob numerous times to cut off the "dead ends" I even stop using heat, I used all the expensive shampoos and conditioners, heat protectors and even took vitamins..still no progress. Than I finally decided just to stop dying my hair completely. I stop dying my hair four seven months and finally noticed progress. A Couple of weeks ago I went into my friends salons for a deep condition and this is what my hair looked like. This picture is worth a 1,000 words... my hair is broken, and over processed. That picture is FOUR YEARS of Sheena's work. Her excuse was "I did everything I thought was best for your hair"...after seven months my hair finally started growing, and felt much better only, because Sheena was not touching it!! Im so upset Sheena wasn't honest about her process with my hair, she did what I wanted, not what was best for my hair. She kept me in her hair salon for hours leaving product on my hair. I sometimes leave with blister on my scalp because that was the "process" not to mention I would spend all day at this salon, and hundreds of dollars for what? Broken, damage, crap hair...and I know the question is how did I not notice?!!!! I noticed my hair felt bad, I noticed she broke my hair in her chair one time (that was the day I got surprise bangs) and I noticed my hair did not grow for four years. And I also noticed we had to keep on cutting it...Sheena always made excuses, on why my hair didn't grow, like maybe it's my hormones. (I'm 23 years old) ..obviously she didn't care about my hair or our friendship. Sheena only cared about the money...To say the least Sheena F***ked up my hair for four years. I'd also like to say that I was 19 years old when I initially started going to sheena. She was the first "professional" to do my hair. I trusted her opinion and work so much, I changed my birth control when she said my hair was breaking because of my hormones and even took vitamins because she said so...Everything that happened to my hair was because I didn't know better. I'm sad to say I was so naive to trust her professional opinion and can't believe I fell for her manipulation for almost four years. Me putting my trust in people like, Sheena has gotten no where. I'm Very happy to say I found a new stylist that will help fix Sheena's four years of back tracking... I just needed another professional to open up my eyes. Does this photo look like four years of progress? Someone who stopped using heat, bought all the right products and took vitamins?... I'd say HELL NO. I drive by probably a hundred or more salons between my house and Avanti because I won't let anyone other than the fabulous Nurie touch my hair. I've never been one of those women who has a hair stylist. I'm not generally that fussed about my hair. That changed (well, part of it - I'm still not really that fussed about my hair on a daily basis) 9.5 years ago on my wedding day when I couldn't find anyone to do my hair before my wedding (the wedding was at 11 am on a Sunday). Nurie came to the rescue and saved the day. Since that time I have only gone to Nurie. She is the sweetest woman and she does an exceptional job with hair. My mother also started getting her hair done here a couple years ago and my mother lives 6 hours away. My mom's hair requires daily maintenance to be presentable (mine doesn't) and she's always had challenges with reliable hair stylists. The first time Nurie did her hair she was raving about how good she felt for weeks. Nurie also told my mom she should have her eyebrows waxed and colored. My mom has always hated her eyebrows so she took Nurie up on this suggestion and she couldn't stop talking about how great Nurie was and how she had made her feel so good about herself. Bottom line, if you're looking for more than just a hair cut or color and you want someone who's going to take excellent care of your hair and genuinely care about you, come to Avanti Salon and ask for Nurie. My hair came out looking worse than before the owner got her hands on me. I came in for a roots touch up in the same rich brown already there, I explicitly told her NOT to color any of the blond CHUNKY highlights as they were a lovely blond I wanted to keep going with, instead she weaved in different colors of gray and whatever else she had in the back store room, I don't know what those colors were she never showed me samples to match my hair, the result was "bye bye" rich brown color and the beautiful blond chunky highlights......wiped out. I was instantly aged from all different shades of gray and whatever else those yucky dark colors were.....yikes! She was proud of the same thing done to her other customers......well good for them, however, nothing I asked for was done, it was entirely the opposite of what I wanted. I had to be at a charity function that night, when I arrived there my friends were shocked, asking me what happen to you, why did you completely change your hair to an outdated aging look? My regular colorist gal left to get married and moved away, I was busy moving in to a new place, all I was looking for was another expert colorist. Afterwards, she, the owner insisted on taking after photos, but not any before ones...why? I looked horrible to say the least, she kept ordering me to smile but it was difficult all I wanted to do was cry! The location is perfect for me. I got my hair done by Melissa. She really took the time to listen to what I wanted as I emphasized I don't trust people with my hair. I got a Carmel baylage, she took the time for even sections and multiple color mixtures to make for a wonderful blend from my dark brown hair. The price was great. Baylage highlights and a haircut costs around $125. Totally worth every penny!! Melissa is personable and honest. She knows hair, so if she knows your hair can't achieve the picture you bring in she'll let you know other options, sometimes at an ever better price than you imagined. Yay!!! I finally found a great salon and even more importantly, a great stylist in the Northwest Valley! Now that I've moved from Scottsdale to the North Phoenix, I've slowly been building up my list of my go-to "beauty maintenance" places. Avanti Salon is at the SW corner of Greenway and 75th Ave. It's easy to find, but also easy to miss if you are just passing by. The salon itself is just average; no frills, no glam, but really-- it's all about the talent inside :-) Which leads me to declare: I'm so glad I found Allyson aka "Hair By Ally La Vae"!! She is a talented hairstylist (and colorist) and an added bonus for me is that she also does a wonderful job waxing my eyebrows. I really don't trust many people to touch my hair or my brows, but Allyson quickly gained my trust. I feel like I've known her a long time, even though I've only seen her a handful of times so far. She is super easy to talk to and made me feel really comfortable since the first time I met her.
