I went for basic cut. My stylist had knee surgery so I needed to get out and take a risk. Salon is in an old strip mall-nothing pretentious, but who cares when you're just after a good cut, right? Arrived on time. Wait time was about 5-10 minutes which is understandable. Cut itself was NOT GOOD. My hair is one length, bobbed. It is no longer one length and has all kinds of random, longer chunks of hair that were clearly not combed and pulled well while being cut. There was no styling at the end of the cut which might have allowed these longer chunks to be identified and evened out. The price was on par with higher quality experiences I've had that include blow dry and style. I am considering this a fail and will endure it until my stylist is up and moving. read more

Secondly, owner is super nice guy. Attention to details is appreciated. So. Crazy hours (I work in healthcare) with the pandemic and difficulty scheduling appointments all the way out in North Scottsdale made me look around for a new salon. I've spent the last 10+ years getting cuts and coloring at the same upscale salon with rude receptionists and having to book 3 or more months out for simple haircuts I've also had the dubious pleasure of blocking off approximately 4+ hours of precious off days and $80-$400 for literally a 2 inch trim on thin, shoulder length hair or partial highlights and a cut. Before gratuity! But they did give you espresso and a lounge with high fashion mags and fancy cucumber water. God forbid I go without makeup, tho! I looked at any number of salons all over town, surveyed everyone at work and finally took a chance on an unassuming salon with perfect Yelp reviews. Ladies, it's hair-so you know how bad you can feel if your hair doesn't turn out well or as expected. Honestly, we probably research our doctors less than our stylists. I drove up to a very simple storefront in a little shopping center in Glendale. I believe the owner Mr. Kim cut my hair and I believe his wife worked with him. Cleo is clean and neat. Small with maybe 4 chairs. My haircut is PERFECT. I attempted to show a phone pic and an i.d. photo and basically gave him a really bad explanation of what I wanted. I was wearing a big mask and I have no idea how he was even able to cut around it so well without seeing my face! He was VERY kind. Clearly a professional. I was in and out in 21 minutes flat. I scheduled highlights a few weeks from now on the spot. This is not the place for you if you want lattes and trendy decor and moody/judgy desk staff. I think there are probably many Asian clients, but there is no language problem at all. Had my first digital perm few days ago. It turned out much better than I had hoped for. You can choose the size of the curls and since I had shoulder length hair, I opted for medium sized curls. Very pleased with how it turned out; not your traditional perm. It's what you call beach wave or curls you get with a curling iron, but right out of the shower. Very easy care as well. Just twirl your wet hair in large chunks and let it air dry. So simple. I am in love! Best part is my hair is still very healthy. read more

I have been in need of a haircut and wanted to try a new style for myself with curtain bangs and a layered haircut. Since I'm Asian and have very fine, thin hair, I was hoping to find an Asian hairdresser who had experience with Asian hair. In the past, I have had bad experiences with American salons who would also upcharge quite a bit! But Mr. Kim assured me my haircut would only cost me $30 which was more than reasonable! I read some reviews and came upon the assumption that he was Japanese because I read a few reviews that he was trained in Japan and was speaking "Japanese" (in a negative review). However, upon my arrival, I noticed very quickly that he and his wife are Korean (as I am also Korean). So please, when going to Asian salons, please do not assume their cultural heritage if you are ignorant. Anyways, I was immediately seen and Mrs. Kim washed my hair thoroughly. Afterwards, Mr. Kim was very polite and listened carefully as I described and brought pictures of what I would like and he even asked me what kind of layering I wanted which was very thoughtful. And after about 30 mins (as he was also with another customer), my new hairdo was finished and I was very pleased with the results! Will definitely be coming back again! Loved my hair when it first got straightened. After a year I need it redone. But it held up so wonderfully. I should have educated myself a little before jumping into it. It's about the same cost every time you do this. I have super long hair so it will probably be about the same cost I paid the first time 300-400 I think. Can't remember. But it's worth it. I have been looking for a salon that would cut my hair the way I want. I have wanted a layered haircut, which means that the hair is cut on a 45 degree angle. But every salon I have gone to has cut my hair on a 90 degree angle so instead of it blending it looks like rows of straight lines. Finally someone who knew what I was talking about. Just got a digital perm today. Took 2 hours and half. Although I got a better and bigger curls else where 8 months ago (which lasted for a good 6 months) in San Diego, this place is good. The only con is that my hair is a lot dryer which is expected from and it's not as the big curly wave (should have went with my instinct by using the big roller instead. You know it's a good haircut when it grows out beautifully and still looks great 3 months later. I only got to get my hair cut here once before I moved away. But I recommend this place because Mr Kim is expert, trained in Japan and very nice too. I made a drastic change cutting 6 inches off going from long to short. I decided I wanted a digital perm and Cleo's was one of the only places in the valley that offers it, plus the reviews were great, so I gave them a shot. I have never had a digital perm before, and it had been at least 20 years since I'd tried a cold perm (that didn't really work out that well). Plus I'm a white girl, and in reading stuff about digital perms, I wasn't sure it would work with my hair type. Mr. Kim and Sake were super nice and explained the whole process to me. Despite what I read about digital perms, the process didn't take that long and wasn't uncomfortable at all. I showed them pictures of how I wanted it to look and he did a great job of replicating it! I went to Cleo beauty salon yesterday to get my hair yuko straightened, they applied the yuko straightner they told me my hair would be perfectly straight. Today 18 hour's later I woke up to have curly hair in different parts of my head. It wasn't perfectly straight like Mr Kim said. I went here because of the all perfect reviews, so I went back today to show Mr Kim and his wife they I asked him what can you do to help me my hair is not straight like you told me. He said I can't do anything he said some people's hair the product holds and some people's hair it don't hold in parts of the hair like mine. I'm so glad I found this salon!!! After getting my hair burned last year & then finding out that Hair City in Phoenix closed I wasn't sure where to go to get my hair magic straightened. I even debated driving out to LA to get my hair done in Koreatown. But luckily I received a referral to Cleo's from a Korean restaurant and so I went here and am glad I did! I got my hair magic straightened (aka japanese straightened) and the stylist did a great job. Although my hair didn't come out perfectly, I blame myself because I recently had my hair highlighted at an american salon and apparently the american salon used bleach in my hair. And bleach plus magic will frizz hair. I learned this from the stylist at Cleo. I have to give extra credit to the stylist at Cleo, because he kept asking me if I had used bleach in my hair for highlights. And I kept telling him no, but he kept asking so I finally called the salon where I had my hair highlighted where they told me that they do use bleach when highlighting! (unsure why they didn't use regular color since I was complaining about how my old highlights had turned yellow, and now my new highlights are turning yellow too! I think bleach highlights is too hard on my hair). I'm really glad the Cleo stylist was so adamant on finding out if bleach was used on my hair, otherwise I would have had a hair disaster this year (like I did last year!-- and no I did not have highlights on my hair last year, last year my hair was in perfect condition, no treatments had been done on my hair.) I also saw that Cleo has machines for digital perms too. I might have to try this next year after I grow my hair out (since my hair is currently shorter than usual because of the disaster from last year) Go here get your hair done by an expert. He told me he was trained in both Korea & Japan. So he speaks Korean, Japanese, & English. I believe magic straight costs about $150, at least that's what I paid. I am really, really, really impressed with this hair salon. And let me tell you why in this first paragraph short-hand: It is a simple salon, but they do fabulous, flexible, customized work to your preference. At a great price too! First, I'll walk you through the first impressions upon walking in. I showed up fifteen minutes early to my 6 o clock appointment that I phoned in advance. It is nothing fancy in there, but it is not run-down cheap. There is no in-your-face HERE BUY MY SALON'S HAIR PRODUCTS that you typically find at other salons. It is simply a desk with a computer to process transactions, a comfortable seating area, and a warm staff consisting of just husband and wife (possibly other staff too but at 6 PM on a Saturday nobody was there other than them). They are a Japanese couple, and they were warm in greeting my arrival. I took my seat, waited for less than 5 minutes and was in the chair to get my hair cut and styled more than ten minutes in advance of my 6 PM appointment. Already, I am impressed. But wait, there is more! I brought some reference photos on how I wanted my hair to be cut. Usually, when I show photos to a stylist, they nod, and just proceed to cut. That is sort of what happened here, but the stylist went ahead and asked me what I would like adjusted, what I was going for. He LISTENED to what I wanted that a photo can't describe on its own. I mean, the photo reference could've been for someone with a totally different hair type, different hair product could've been used to style the hair than what I have at home, etc etc. The stylist ran through AS MANY DETAILS possible and thoroughly explained hair concepts that I was previously unaware of or understood too simply. So he proceeded to explaint that most stylists, even those that understand Asian hair, don't understand that it's not just a matter of working the blade to thin out hair. There is a whole texturing process that most stylists over-simplify with Asian hair. He explained how when styling my hair "Japanese style" one twists the hair slightly with the hair wax. This is something I already knew, but he showed me that when CUTTING the hair the stylist must twist the hair when cutting to reach the desired texture most common with Japanese men's "destroyed" hair style looks, in ADDITION to the whole hair thinning "point cut" technique that every good stylist should recognize about Asian hair. I was most impressed with the stylist's background. He has literally traveled around the world studying with different professionals on hairstyles, so he has a really well rounded, expert take on how to cut hair. And it showed. I am so used to a haircut taking an hour long. Haircut that takes more than 30 minutes, the washing of the hair, the back massage. This haircut took less than 30 minutes, and that includes the hair washing and massage. I DID NOT FEEL RUSHED at all. The man is just efficient with his time, yet he never speaks or acts in a fashion that makes you feel unappreciated or rushed. In short, the visit was short and sweet, the owners are experienced, and they do not overcharge for their services. I would come back, and I have already recommended some of my coworkers to come give this salon a try. I know I'm definitely coming back to this salon! read more
