I went to Aveda's hair academy and let a student in-training provide my hair service. This is a hit or miss, my service was a B-. I would recommend something super basic like a blow dry, wash, and curl. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I called ahead made my appointment, you can also book a specific person if you would like.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The aesthetic here is nice and it was clean. I waited about 10 minutes to be called back after I checked in with the hostess. I paid $30 or $35 dollars? Can't remember and I left a tip. My hair was decent I knew I would go home and restyle it some, but what I was after was the light texture and bounce when you get a fresh blowout. It would have came out a little better had she blow dried my hair longer. Overall pretty good job, would I come back? Maybe. This is a nice resource when you need a last minute hair do and you can somewhat restyle it yourself.

My entire top layer snapped off.

I told me hair stylist a few things and she ignored me. First thing I said was do not twist my hair because it will break off. She ignores me, twists my hair into ribbons and clips it. My hair broke off. I now how a ton of inch long growths around my hair. Secondly it came out super purple to a point where I had to go home and re wash it.

The front of my hair after the highlight. Certainly not "dimensional" color.

Unfortunately I can't recommend going to the Aveda institute after my experience there. While these are students in training, I was booked with a stylist who had only 1 month of training left before her program graduation so she should be skilled. I asked for partial highlights in my natural black hair and hoped for a good result. [[HIGHLIGHT]]At start of appointment I mentioned wanting subtle, dimensional color with my main goal being to cover up greys, showed pictures of previous highlights I had, and when the stylist asked if I wanted "money pieces" to incorporate more color by my face I declined those and shared concerns about the intensity of that look for what I was going for as the overall effect.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] What I left with were incredibly contrasted, bright, and streaky highlights with entirely too much color by my face, and in a reddish, light brown tone that did not compliment my features at all. To make matters worse, the instructor overseeing my stylist's work kept checking my foils throughout the appointment and made comments claiming the color was lifting "exactly how we want it" and that the effect was "subtle", so I assumed we were making progress towards my goals. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When I expressed concerns about the results at the end of my appointment, I was told that I just needed time to "get used to the color" and should have asked for a balayage for the effect I wanted.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I left unsure of whether my disappointment was because of a miscommunication. I was not shown the back of my head in the salon, where there was extremely streaky color, giving a skunk like effect that demonstrated the highlights were not done properly. I only learned about the extent of the issues with the back of my head after I got home. I had to go to another salon to get a single process color over everything to get back to a look that felt comfortable for me before the work week started. Aveda Institute offered a free fix of my hair, but I didn't trust going back after my first experience, and the fix would not have happened in time for me to go back to work. The hassle and stress of the outcome was not worth the discounted services Aveda Institute offers. Would not go back or recommend to anyone.

My hair is now fried on the sides, but I have no highlights on the top of my hair. The texture is horrible because bleach was on too long.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]I have been a client at Aveda Institute for over 10 years.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Except for Covid restrictions I was there. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I have met the nicest most professional people who were just capable of having a conversation[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] so today when two instructors came to me when my hair dresser disappeared to tell me that I had said something offensive to her, but they couldn't be specific about it, and they were going to finish my hair which was 3/4 of the way highlighted without a cut or without any plan to help me figure out how to get my hair done. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They said I can call and reschedule.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Just because somebody might say a little bit of something that you don't agree with doesn't mean that you should prepare yourself for running away as a hairstylist. You're gonna deal with a lot of people you do not like and never want to see again. The student that did my hair today's name was Dora. what was most surprising and disappointing is that none of the instructors offered to finish my hair for me and sent me out with wet hair in 40 degree rainy weather. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Now, knowing that I will never step foot in there again I have to find someone to fix my hair.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] No professional likes to fix someone else's work.

I never mind that the process takes longer at the school than the traditional salon because everyone around was so lovely and welcoming.

I was thrilled to have found Karina after going through a full-glam wedding trial with another artist. The look was not me at all, and I went searching for someone who could achieve a more understated look. Karina fit the bill perfectly. Karina always came to me and charged a minimal cost for travel; she explained everything she was doing, as she was doing it; and she -- expertly -- did a complete pivot on my wedding makeup look between the trial and the big day. I truly can't wait to work with her again!

I am ACTUALLY the least photogenic person on the planet - I know everyone says that, but please trust me here - and while I only ended up liking three of the photos, that's still honestly a way better than average success rate for me. Julie the photographer was great to work with, and my makeup was of course on point. I showed the makeup artist a random photo of Olivia Wilde's makeup and she was able to replicate the look pretty well. I also love love love the owner here. You rule boss babe. I think a cool option they could consider adding is photo-editing for extra; I'd definitely pay more to have some airbrushing and magical Photoshop face slimming. So while most of these pictures sadly ended up just being another reminder of how badly I need to lose weight, I would highly recommend the package itself! Edit: before you ask, yes, the photos you get are way higher res than the ones I shared here. These three went through multiple rounds of amateur editing by me, screenshotting from insta, etc. That'll do the trick.

Olivia French promised a lot of things in the course - my class never received. Before payment- she promised there will be clients to work on and guest speakers for the class- all false. We worked solely on each other and had no guest speakers. That experience alone should have taught me to stay was from the school but I guess not. I went back in 2020 to get my managers license. I was told by Olivia that I needed to take her course in order to sit for the test. My mother and I collectively paid her $4,000 for the course that she said I needed. I went to her school twice for some one on one class time with Olivia- total of maybe 2 hours. Then Covid hit and we were unable to meet in person. I went online to renew my basic esthetics license and I noticed the site said I qualified to take my managers test since I had had my basic license for over 2 years. I was confused because that was my original question to Olivia- did I need a course in order to sit for my managers test? Originally Olivia said I most definitely needed to take the course with her school for my license. After seeing my eligibility online - I emailed Olivia and asked here why it would say I was eligible? She replied back and told me that was "was not eligible and I did indeed need to take the course". After researching and speaking with the dc board- I went on to take my managers test. A short time later- I passed the test. After passing the test and receiving my managers license I emailed Olivia and asked her the same questions again. And again Olivia said I would have to take her course for the license. Meanwhile- I had taken the test and had my license in hand. It was all lies. My mother and I composed an email to Olivia formally asking for our money back since I didn't need the course and I had only gone to her school for a few hours. Olivia did not initially respond to the email but had a friend call us both and POSE as a member of the cosmetology board and THREATEN us! Long story short- Olivia admitted once on the phone that she was wrong and would pay our money back. Then she switch it up- and said she would "see us in court". So we went on to file a complaint with the consumer affairs. We have official correspondence that Olivia admitted to taking money from us for a course that I did not need. THE KICKER- she was only willing to pay $25 a month to me and $75 a month to my mother until the $4,000 was paid back. That would take 5+ years! The funny thing is- I asked Olivia originally if I could pay for my course in two installments and she said no but then expected us to wait 5 years for our payment. We declined her offer because it was a joke . Please do your research before you spend your money with her school. She makes promises with no intention of keeping. She takes money with no intention of teaching. Olivia stole $4,000 from us. She has been in business forever many years- she knew I did not need that course especially since I originally went to her school 5 years prior - she knew how long I held my license.
